@ Paul: Thank you for that. So we see from your two recent FOIA requests that (i) P&CC Julia MULLIGAN and her Chief Constable have passed through her first year in office without engaging with one another on the SAVILE matter – and (ii) that York City Council assert that they never had any dealings with SAVILE, ever. It is almost as though the man never set foot in North Yorkshire. Do you believe that?

Well he did set foot in 1982. He was back stage, York Racecourse along with The Bachelors, during the Popes six day tour.

Here is again with the Pope at St. George's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Southwark. Same tour, same T.shirt.

Did Savile accompany the Pope during the rest of the tour ie Scotland, Wales Manchester..etc?

'There was a huge 'behind the scenes' operation going on. It was only just over a month since Pope John Paul had been shot at pretty well point blank range in Rome (13 May 1981). Security was an important issue.'

No one checked out Savile, yeh right.

Good call welshwitch and an excellent example of corruption and cover-ups.

That story is really really disturbing. What else has he got away with?

Another example of cover-up (or blind forgetfulness?) just like when Savile wanted to sue the media for never having set foot in Jersey.

Just on another note about the abuse that took place in hospitals and reports of altars and masked people. I wonder who these other masked people were. Very high ups??

Quote:
Conry, 59, who headed the Catholic Church's media office in London for seven years before becoming bishop in 2001, spoke to The Times on Good Friday at his home in Pease Pottage, about 30 miles south of London.

Conry: The '70s was a quite different era. I was in Birmingham, in England, in the '80s, and there was a case involving a priest in the parish next door to me. The common gossip was that this man was too close to children. We thought, yeah, that's not good, get him away from them, so they moved him on. But then a few months later, the whole thing comes out; he was abusing children.

We didn't have the language [to describe it]; we didn't have the concept.

interviewer: But child molestation was a crime already in the 1970s. There was already a legal language to talk about it.

In other institutions devoted to the public good, such as the police or the government, we expect leaders to be sacked or to step down if there's severe dereliction of duty on their watch. Shouldn't this apply to bishops and even the pope himself?

Conry: Certainly . . . if you can establish clearly there's been a dereliction of duty.

interviewer: Is there any excuse for not turning a priest suspected of abuse over to the police, and just handling it purely internally?

Conry: No. We'd be in deep, deep trouble. . . .

If a case comes to us, we look at it, in the first instance, and say, does there seem to be any substance in this case, and straightaway hand it to the police. That's been our practice since '94.

There's been no suggestion that it would be handed to the Vatican. In the case of a priest convicted, and therefore the canonical process, that's handed to the Vat, if we want this guy laicized [defrocked]. . . . But certainly it's not been the practice here that an allegation is handed straightaway to the Vatican, or even dealt with internally by the local church. . . .

Vatican Declined to Defrock U.S. Priest Who Abused Boys

The Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy, with hands together, at St. John’s School for the Deaf in Wisconsin in 1960.

March 24, 2010

Top Vatican officials — including the future Pope Benedict XVI — did not defrock a priest who molested as many as 200 deaf boys, even though several American bishops repeatedly warned them that failure to act on the matter could embarrass the church, according to church files newly unearthed as part of a lawsuit.

The internal correspondence from bishops in Wisconsin directly to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future pope, shows that while church officials tussled over whether the priest should be dismissed, their highest priority was protecting the church from scandal.

The documents emerge as Pope Benedict is facing other accusations that he and direct subordinates often did not alert civilian authorities or discipline priests involved in sexual abuse when he served as an archbishop in Germany and as the Vatican’s chief doctrinal enforcer.

The Wisconsin case involved an American priest, the Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy, who worked at a renowned school for deaf children from 1950 to 1974. But it is only one of thousands of cases forwarded over decades by bishops to the Vatican office called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, led from 1981 to 2005 by Cardinal Ratzinger. It is still the office that decides whether accused priests should be given full canonical trials and defrocked.

In 1996, Cardinal Ratzinger failed to respond to two letters about the case from Rembert G. Weakland, Milwaukee’s archbishop at the time. After eight months, the second in command at the doctrinal office, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, now the Vatican’s secretary of state, instructed the Wisconsin bishops to begin a secret canonical trial that could lead to Father Murphy’s dismissal.

But Cardinal Bertone halted the process after Father Murphy personally wrote to Cardinal Ratzinger protesting that he should not be put on trial because he had already repented and was in poor health and that the case was beyond the church’s own statute of limitations.

“I simply want to live out the time that I have left in the dignity of my priesthood,” Father Murphy wrote near the end of his life to Cardinal Ratzinger. “I ask your kind assistance in this matter.” The files contain no response from Cardinal Ratzinger.

The documents include letters between bishops and the Vatican, victims’ affidavits, the handwritten notes of an expert on sexual disorders who interviewed Father Murphy and minutes of a final meeting on the case at the Vatican.

Father Murphy not only was never tried or disciplined by the church’s own justice system, but also got a pass from the police and prosecutors who ignored reports from his victims, according to the documents and interviews with victims. Three successive archbishops in Wisconsin were told that Father Murphy was sexually abusing children, the documents show, but never reported it to criminal or civil authorities.

Pope Francis will set up a Vatican child protection commmission ... it was announced this morning.

Following a Council of Cardinals meeting at the Vatican, Cardinal Sean O’Malley told reporters that Pope Francis had accepted the cardinals’ proposal for a special commission established for the protection of children.

According to Catholic News Service, Cardinal O’Malley said that the commission will survey child protection programmes and work with bishops and religious.

The commission will include lay people and will focus as well on supporting victims of abuse and advising the Pope on prevention polcies and pastoral outreach for victims.

The Vatican commission will look at guidelines in place, priestly formation programs, codes of conduct and screening candidates for the priesthood.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith’s role in investigating and trying accused priests won’t change.

The former broadcaster Jimmy Savile, an active supporter of Stoke Mandeville Hospital, took the captivating teenager under his wing, organising days out for her and introducing her to the Duchess of York. Both became friends: the Duchess sent a basket of flowers to her wedding in 1995, Savile was a regular visitor to her family home, and Between Angels & Demons contains contributions from them.
"The great thing about Jimmy was that he introduced me to the idea of living with cancer, rather than dying from it. We had such a special rapport, and still do."
Once out of hospital, and despite her daily regime of drugs, antibiotics and steroids, she sailed through her interviews at Oxford and was accepted. She moved her treatment to John Radcliffe Hospital in the city and threw herself wholeheartedly into student life, joining a choir, coxing for the rowing team and starring in the college play, where she met her husband, Lorenzo, who now works in the City.

The disgusted captain who threw Jimmy Savile off a cruise ship

THE only thing that puzzled me about Sir Jimmy Savile's death was that it took so long for his sexual victims to come out of the woodwork.

The Rev. Barry Kinsmen

Quote:

Padstow ex-priest's 'anxious' final days about Savile enquiry

A RETIRED priest found dead in the sea off Padstow was anxious and depressed in the months leading up to his death, and was concerned that the Jimmy Savile police inquiry was spreading to Cornwall.

Mr Kinsmen, known locally as "Mr Padstow'', disappeared on New Year's Eve after his Ford Ka was found abandoned near Trevone, an inquest in Truro heard yesterday.

Extensive searches were undertaken but his body was not found until January 16 when it was recovered by Padstow's inshore lifeboat crew at the Butter Hole, a cove not far from Stepper Point.

Mr Kinsmen had been depressed and anxious in the months leading up to his death, and no longer wanted to preach or deliver eulogies in church.

"Barry was very concerned about the amount of coverage the Jimmy Savile enquiry was getting, especially the fact the enquiry was spreading to Cornwall," Mr Malkinson said in a statement.

Dr Carlyon said the inquest was unable to ascertain how Mr Kinsmen had died, but from the evidence, on the balance of probability, he had taken his own life.

More on the HCPT "charity" mentioned above

Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust

HCPT Founder - Brother Michael Strode & Cardinal O'brien

Savile/O'Brien/Jumbulance

Quote:
Mother sues Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust charity over son's death in Lourdes

The Observer, Saturday 3 August 2002

For more than a century people have travelled to the French town of Lourdes in search of miracles. It is one of the places where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared and is revered by Catholics all over the world.

So when Sue Brown waved goodbye to her handicapped son Christopher as he boarded a plane to Lourdes last Easter for a pilgrimage, she thought he was in safe hands.

But this weekend she is preparing to sue the charity that took Christopher on the trip. Instead of a longed-for miracle, the trip ended in tragedy when the 12-year-old was crushed to death beneath the wheels of a bus belonging to the Catholic organisation that was supposed to be looking after him.

She claims the directors of the Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust, which organised the trip and whose patron is the Duchess of Kent, broke promises about the level of care her son would receive on the pilgrimage.

Christopher suffered from Angelman Syndrome. He had severe learning disabilities from birth, could not speak and had no sense of danger. He could walk slowly but was reliant on a wheelchair.

His mother said: 'It was like keeping an eye on a pan of milk on a stove and making sure it wouldn't boil over. He had to be watched all the time. In just one instant he could harm himself.'

When she was told of the charity, she was overjoyed. 'I thought this was a chance for Christopher. I didn't believe there would be a miracle cure, but I thought at least it would be a holiday for him, an experience.'

She said directors from the charity came to visit her at her home in Basildon, Essex, and convinced her Christopher would be thoroughly looked after. 'I wanted promises that there would be one-to-one support, 24 hours a day, otherwise I would have never let him go. They told me there would be one-to-one care and this is something they boast about on their website.'

But while in Lourdes, Christopher wandered off by himself. On 18 April a bus owned by the charity reversed into him, crushing him beneath its wheels. 'As far as I am concerned,' said his mother, 'it was like allowing a two-year-old to run down the middle of a main road. Why was there nobody looking after him?' She says she has decided to speak out to warn the thousands of other families who send their children on similar excursions. 'They claim to be a Christian charity, but they have never apologised and I don't know how they can live with themselves. I want to warn parents who are sending their children so they can make an informed choice about the risks involved.'

Brown claimed the charity didn't inform her for several hours after the accident. By the time she and her husband reached France, Christopher was dead. She was then horrified to find out that the charity had chartered a four-seat private plane to fly them home - with the coffin allegedly wedged between the seats for a three-hour flight.

More than 15 months later, the family says it has still not received any answers from the charity and there has not been an inquest. French police investigated and found that the driver of the bus was not to blame.

Angela Smith, a junior Minister in the Government's whips office and the Browns' local Labour MP in Basildon, has taken up their case. She will shortly raise the matter with Ministers and the Health Safety Executive.

Smith said: 'This is a heartbreaking and tragic case. It has raised a lot of questions and the Browns deserve answers as to how their son died. We also need to know if more can be done to protect children on trips taken with charities and voluntary organisations. Do the regulations need to be tightened?'

While the law was recently toughened to cover those taking children on school trips or outdoor adventure courses, the same regulations do not apply to volunteers in organisations such as the Scouts.

Tony Mills, chief executive of the Handicapped Children's Pilgrimage Trust, said: 'Unfortunately, because the matter is the subject of a legal action, we have been advised by our lawyers not to comment.'

Quote:
Peter Strode writes:

How did HCPT happen?

The story of the Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust began in 1954. At that time Dr Michael Strode was working at Chailey Heritage Craft School in Sussex, an establishment which was both a hospital and school for children with long term disabilities. Seeing that the Anglican Chaplain had organised a holiday for some of the children Dr Michael wondered whether something similar might be done for the Roman Catholic children. So, in the spirit of ‘not wishing to be outdone,’ he decided to take a group of four boys to Lourdes, aided by his friend Peter Keevney, another member of staff.

The 1954 experiment was a great success, but in 1955 it was decided that the party should join the National School’s Pilgrimage, rather than the diocesan pilgrimage with which they had travelled previously. The little group was noticed by the Bishop leading the pilgrimage, and the following year, 1956, he asked Michael and Peter to extend the scope of their work. This meant taking children from places other than Chailey, appealing for funds, seeking extra helpers and the formation of a Charitable Trust, HCPT.

The Trustees of the newly formed charity were nothing if not adventurous, appealing for funds to take as many as 50 children to Lourdes! Their boldness was rewarded, and in 1957, the year of HCPT’s first official pilgrimage, 43 children accompanied by 28 helpers joined the National School’s Pilgrimage. Today the HCPT Easter pilgrimage numbers around 5000, but through the system of ‘family groups’ it maintains the quality of care and love with which it began.

Default Age of the train

Watch it before it disappears!
"The Age of the Train" BBC documentary from 2012 (I think). A sort of pre-Savilegate time capsule. Savile from about 23 mins. Apparently not the kind of bloke you'd take to the opera...

Another celebrity Jumblance supporter - and wife of a 'friend of Jimmy', as seen with the horn in the infamous pic:

http://cherieblair.org/highlights/20...liverpool.html

'Cherie returned to her home town of Liverpool for the day recently, as guest speaker at both a Ladies Business Forum and a fundraising dinner for Liverpool ACROSS Groups 'Jumbulance'. A Jumbulance is literally a jumbo ambulance that travels overland to Lourdes every week from the end of March to the end of October, the Lourdes season. It has seven beds on board so can take some very sick or disabled people with nurses and carers to look after them on the 21 hour journey. For more information click here.'
