Lightbulb Royal Welch

Quote:
Lance Corporal Wayne John Edwards (c1966 – 13 January 1993) was a British soldier who served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers..He was the first British serviceman to be killed in Bosnia-Herzegovina..At the time of his death he was attached to the Cheshire Regiment as part of the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) during Operation Grapple 1.. The following day Malcolm Rifkind, the defence secretary, announced that a Royal Navy task force would be sent to the Adriatic and that any future attacks on British troops could lead to the immediate deployment of artillery and strike aircraft to counter them.. This was the first carrier task force to leave British shores on a military operation since the Falklands War 11 years earlier..

Edwards was born in Cefn Mawr, near Wrexham, Wales, the son of Barbara and John Edwards.. His father was a former British soldier who had served in the Welsh Guards. Edwards joined the Army Cadet Force, a youth organisation with connections to the British Army, aged 13.. His stepfather, John Manley, said that Edwards was a popular figure locally, "who used to go out of his way to help others.. He would be walking along the lane here and see one of the neighbours struggling to lift something, and he would just jump over the hedge and lift it for them.. He was that type of lad..Edwards was promoted to Lance corporal in 1992.. After serving two tours of duty with the Army in Northern Ireland, where he had seen one friend killed and another wounded, Edwards deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in November 1992, based in Vitez as the driver of a FV510 Warrior infantry fighting vehicle..The attachment arose when the Cheshires asked for volunteers from other regiments within their division, the Prince of Wales', to train as drivers..

Croatian crimes and massacre of Muslims in the village of Ahmici 23.4.93..

The British contingent of UNPROFOR had come under fire on many occasions since the advance party had arrived in October 1992.. Warrior patrols to Turbe, near Travnik, were repeatedly shelled, suffering light damage, and a 3-mile stretch north of Kladanj on the road to Tuzla was nicknamed "Bomb Alley" because of the regular attacks on UN convoys.. In the week leading up to Edwards' death, British forces came under attack on two occasions, first when a Serbian artillery barrage hit the Royal Engineers' headquarters at Tomislavgrad, followed by an ambush against a Danish UN relief convoy returning from Tuzla with an escort of British FV107 Scimitar armoured reconnaissance vehicles from the 9th/12th Royal Lancers, forcing the British to return fire with 30mm RARDEN cannons..Edwards' vehicle, commanded by Corporal Alan Furniss, was part of 5 Platoon which operated as the personal escort for Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stewart DSO, the CO of the Cheshires...

During the negotiations, the British received a request to escort an ambulance carrying 3 injured civilian women through the town and on to the nearest medical facility..2 Warriors were assigned to protect them, with one positioned at the front of the ambulance and one at the rear.. Edwards drove the lead Warrior which left the British base at Gornji Vakuf at 10.30am in the direction of the town centre.. Edwards drove with the hatch in the 'open' position for greater visibility. The rear Warrior was also transporting the Regimental Medical Officer, Major Tracy Clarke RAMC.. Approximately 12 minutes after leaving the base, as Edwards drove across a bridge, he was struck by a single shot in the head and his Warrior went out of control and mounted the pavement.. He was dragged from the vehicle and given first aid while Clarke ran from the rear vehicle to attend him.. More Warriors were called from the base and formed a defensive ring as Clarke attempted resuscitation but Edwards had died almost instantly..It is not known who fired the shot...

Lt. Col. Stewart demanded that the Croat and Muslim commanders open a murder enquiry and said: "This is cold-blooded murder and there will be a murder investigation.. Lance Corporal Edwards was a UN soldier, and we want the person responsible brought to trial."On 16 January 1993 Stewart managed to broker a temporary ceasefire in Gornji Vakuf so that a wreath could be laid at the spot where Edwards was killed.. At 2.00pm both sides paused hostilities while 4 Warriors drove to the bridge.. Accompanying the British troops at the ceremony were the commanders of the BiH and HVO units. Cpl. Furniss tied a wreath of yellow and red carnations and pine branches, spelling out the name 'Ed', to the bridge.. After a minute's silence the BiH and HVO commanders saluted and the British withdrew.. Hostilities recommenced minutes later...

His funeral was held at St. John's Church, Rhosymedre, Wales on 25 January 1993.. In May 1993 Edwards' mother attended the parade at the Cheshires' home base in Germany where medals for service were awarded.. She was presented with her son's United Nations Medal by Lt. Col. Stewart. In November 2010, Edwards' sister was presented with the Elizabeth Cross, awarded to the next of kin of members of the Armed Forces killed in action after the Second World War..Lt. Col.. Stewart said in a statement read to the hearing that he believed the murderer would never be caught, and that "Since the incident I have been to a number of meetings of the local commanders of the Muslim and Croatian armies to try and negotiate peace in Gornji Vakuf. During those meetings I have told both sides that the British Army will be treating L/Cpl Edwards' death as murder." John Hughes, the South Clwyd coroner said: "This is a terribly tragic case of a young man of 26 who went to serve Queen and country in a peacekeeping capacity, not to fight. He had gone to serve the United Nations in a country torn apart by civil war and has met an untimely death"...

" When told he would be deploying with UNPROFOR "he was apprehensive, but looking forward to it. He said:'It's my job and I've got to do it, so let's get on with it..' That was him, you know?"...The tune was used by Ralph Vaughan Williams as the basis of the second movement of his organ composition "Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes"..This is probably best known as an orchestral arrangement by Arnold Foster published in 1938..On 1 October 2011, as a tribute to him and the other peacekeepers that lost their lives during the conflict, the mayor of Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje renamed the bridge where Edwards was killed to "Lance Corporal Wayne Edwards Bridge." The official ceremony was attended by Edwards' sister Kimberley, the British ambassador Nigel Casey, Defence Attache Lt.Col. Stephen Croft and Col. Robert Stewart..Edwards' death prompted the Armed Forces Financial Advisory Services to relaunch its 'Forces Safeguard' life insurance policy for members of the Armed Forces on active service.

Dianthus caryophyllus, carnation or clove pink, is a species of Dianthus. It is probably native to the Mediterranean region but its exact range is unknown due to extensive cultivation for the last 2,000 years..Colombia is the largest carnation producer in the world..Pink carnationshave the most symbolic and historical significance. According to a Christian legend, carnations first appeared on Earth as Jesus carried the Cross..The Virgin Mary shed tears at Jesus' plight, and carnations sprang up from where her tears fell..Thus the pink carnation became the symbol of a mother's undying love..At the University of Oxford, carnations are traditionally worn to all examinations; white for the first exam, pink for exams in between, and red for the last exam..Some scholars believe that the name "carnation" comes from "coronation" or "corone" (flower garlands), as it was one of the flowers used in Greek ceremonial crowns.. Others think the name stems from the Latin "caro" (genitive "carnis") (flesh), which refers to the original colour of the flower, or incarnatio (incarnation), which refers to the incarnation of God made flesh...

On 10 January 1993, just before the outbreak of hostilities in Gornji Vakuf, the Croat Defence Council (HVO) commander Luka Šekerija, sent a "Military – Top Secret" request to Colonel Tihomir Blaškić and Dario Kordić (later convicted by ICTY of war crimes and crimes against humanity, i.e. ethnic cleansing) for rounds of mortar shells available at the ammunition factory in Vitez.. Fighting then broke out in Gornji Vakuf on 11 January 1993, sparked by a bomb which had been placed by Croats in a Bosniak-owned hotel that had been used as a military headquarters. A general outbreak of fighting followed and there was heavy shelling of the town that night by Croat artillery..During cease-fire negotiations at the Britbat HQ in Gornji Vakuf, colonel Andrić, representing the HVO, demanded that the Bosnian Muslim forces lay down their arms and accept HVO control of the town, threatening that if they did not agree he would flatten Gornji Vakuf to the ground..The HVO demands were not accepted by the ARBiH and the attack continued, followed by massacres of Bosnian Muslim civilians in the neighbouring villages of Bistrica, Uzričje, Duša, Ždrimci and Hrasnica.. Although the Croats often cited it as a major reason for the attack on Gornji Vakuf, the commander of the British Britbat company claimed that he and his soldiers did not seen any Muslim Mujahideen in Gornji Vakuf.. The shelling campaign and the attacks during the war resulted in hundreds of injured and deaths, mostly Bosnian Muslim civilians...

Arrow Genocid u Srebrenici

Quote:
The Srebrenica massacre, also known as the Srebrenica genocide, was the genocidal July 1995 killing of more than 8,000 Bosniaks, mainly men and boys, in and around the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War. The killing was perpetrated by units of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) under the command of General Ratko Mladić. The Secretary-General of the United Nations described the mass murder as the worst crime on European soil since the Second World War.. A paramilitary unit from Serbia known as the Scorpions, officially part of the Serbian Interior Ministry until 1991, participated in the massacre, along with several hundred Russian volunteers..

Serbia and Montenegro was cleared of direct responsibility for or complicity in the massacre, but was found responsible for not doing enough to prevent the massacre and not prosecuting those responsible, in breach of the Genocide Convention. The Preliminary List of People Missing or Killed in Srebrenica compiled by the Bosnian Federal Commission of Missing Persons contains 8,373 names.. As of July 2012, 6,838 genocide victims have been identified through DNA analysis of body parts recovered from mass graves; as of July 2013, 6,066 victims have been buried at the Memorial Centre of Potočari.. Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić officially apologized for the massacre, although he stopped short of calling it genocide...

Miss Sarajevo Passengers..

Many women and girls suffered rape and sexual abuse and other forms of torture.. According to the testimony of Zumra Šehomerovic:

The Serbs began at a certain point to take girls and young women out of the group of refugees.. They were raped. The rapes often took place under the eyes of others and sometimes even under the eyes of the children of the mother. A Dutch soldier stood by and he simply looked around with a Walkman on his head. He did not react at all to what was happening. It did not happen just before my eyes, for I saw that personally, but also before the eyes of us all.. The Dutch soldiers walked around everywhere. It is impossible that they did not see it.

There was a woman with a small baby a few months old. A Chetnik told the mother that the child must stop crying. When the child did not stop crying, he snatched the child away and cut its throat.. Then he laughed. There was a Dutch soldier there who was watching. He did not react at all.

I saw yet more frightful things. For example, there was a girl, she must have been about nine years old. At a certain moment some Chetniks recommended to her brother that he rape the girl. He did not do it and I also think that he could not have done it for he was still just a child. Then they murdered that young boy. I have personally seen all that. I really want to emphasize that all this happened in the immediate vicinity of the base. In the same way I also saw other people who were murdered. Some of them had their throats cut.. Others were beheaded...

The survivors felt bitterness towards the UN because it had not been able to protect the "Safe Area." Bitterness and resentment was also directed towards the 2nd Corps of the ARBiH and there were a number of incidents. In one, a member of the 28th Division opened fire at the Corps Commander, Sead Delić, who had resisted all calls from his officers for a military push to link up with fleeing soldiers and civilians; a military police bodyguard was killed, while another returned fire and killed the sniper...

As a result of exhaustive UN negotiations with Serb troops, around 25,000 Srebrenica women were forcibly transferred to the Bosniak-controlled territory..

Some buses apparently never reached safety. According to a witness account given by Kadir Habibović, who hid himself on one of the first buses from the base in Potočari to Kladanj, he saw at least one vehicle full of Bosniak women being driven away from Bosnian government-held territory..

Although Serb forces had long been blamed for the massacre, it was not until June 2004—following the Srebrenica commission's preliminary report—that Serb officials acknowledged that their security forces planned and carried out the mass killing.. A Serb commission's final report on the 1995 Srebrenica massacre acknowledged that the mass murder of the men and boys was planned.. The commission found that more than 7,800 were killed after it compiled thirty-four lists of victims..The vast amount of planning and high-level coordination invested in killing thousands of men in a few days is apparent from the scale and the methodical nature in which the executions were carried out.. A concerted effort was made to capture all Bosniak men of military age. In fact, those captured included many boys well below that age and elderly men above it...

Armed guards shot at the men who tried to climb out the windows to escape the massacre. When the shooting stopped, the shed was full of bodies.. Another survivor, who was only slightly wounded, reports:

I was not even able to touch the floor, the concrete floor of the warehouse.... After the shooting, I felt a strange kind of heat, warmth, which was coming from the blood that covered the concrete floor and I was stepping on the dead people who were lying around. But there were even men (just men) who were still alive, who were only wounded and as soon as I would step on him, I would hear him cry, moan, because I was trying to move as fast as I could. I could tell that people had been completely disembodied and I could feel bones of the people that had been hit by those bursts of bullets or shells, I could feel their ribs crushing. Then I would get up again and continue...

As the buses crowded with Bosnian women, children and elderly made their way from Potočari to Kladanj, they were stopped at Tišća village, searched, and the Bosnian men and boys found on board were removed from the bus. The evidence reveals a well-organised operation in Tišća..During the days following the massacre, American spy planes overflew the area of Srebrenica, and took photos showing the ground in vast areas around the town had been removed, a sign of mass burials..The most famous group of se7en men wandered about in occupied territory for the entire winter..According to Agence France Presse (AFP), a dozen Greek volunteers fought alongside the Serbs at Srebrenica..They were members of the Greek Volunteer Guard (ΕΕΦ), or GVG, a contingent of Greek paramilitaries formed at the request of Ratko Mladić as an integral part of the Drina Corps. Some had links with the Greek neo-Nazi organisation Golden Dawn, others were mercenaries..After the Markale massacre on 28 August, NATO launched a bombing campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina lasting from 30 August until 20 September. The Dayton Peace agreement of November 1995 effectively ended the war...

Arrow Foreign policy of the Bill

Quote:
The foreign policy of the Bill Clinton administration was the foreign policy of the United States from 1993 to 2001 under the Administration of President Bill Clinton. Clinton's main foreign policy advisors were Secretaries of State Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright and National Security Advisors Anthony Lake and Sandy Berger..President Clinton assumed office shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War,but nevertheless was forced to confront numerous international conflicts. Shortly after taking office, Clinton had to decide whether the United States, as a world superphower, should have a say in the conflicts and violence occurring in Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Haiti..Clinton also spent much of his foreign policy on the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, East Timor, Northern Ireland, and the Middle East, with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in particular...

Just weeks before Clinton took office, President George H. W. Bush had deployed American soldiers to Somalia, a coastal nation on the Horn of Africa, where people were suffering and dying from starvation and civil war. The soldiers were sent to guard food and other relief supplies from being stolen by warring factions. After soldiers faced fire from armed clans and 19 soldiers were killed in 1993 in the Battle of Mogadishu, the mission quickly lost popularity with the American people. Fearing anarchy resulting in the starvation of Somalia's civilians and to help U.S. Forces defend themselves, Clinton increased troop presence in the country. Demands for withdrawal, however, grew louder and Clinton ordered troops out of the country in March 1994.. This left Somalia in a state of anarchy, with warlords battling for control, even 15 years later..In April 1994, genocide in Rwanda erupted due to a conflict between Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups. Over the next few months, an estimated 500,000 to 1 million Rwandans, mainly Tutsi, were killed. By July, the Rwandan Patriotic Front took over the country. Although the Clinton Administration and the international community was aware of the genocide taking place in Rwanda, no action was undertaken..

Much of the focus of Clinton's foreign policy during his first term was the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a nation in southeastern Europe that had declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1992. This declaration was the catalyst of a war between Bosnian Serbs, who wanted Bosnia to remain in the Yugoslav federation, and Bosnian Muslims and Croats. The Bosnian Serbs, who were supported by Serbia, were better equipped than the Muslims and the Croats; as a result, they populated and controlled much of the countryside in ways including besieging cities, such as the capital of Sarajevo.. This caused widespread suffering, and in response Clinton proposed bombing Serb supply lines and lifting an embargo preventing the shipment of military arms to the former Yugoslavia (a policy known as lift and strike). European nations, however, were opposed to these moves. In 1994, Clinton opposed an effort by the Republicans in Congress to lift the arms embargo, as it were, because American allies in Western Europe were still resistant to that policy..In the spring of 1998, ethnic tension in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia–the state formed from the former Yugoslav republics of Serbia and Montenegro–heightened when the military forces responded in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija. More than 90 percent of the residents of Kosovo were Muslim and ethnic Albanians, many of whom wanted independence from the country. Yugoslav forces were mobilized into province to quell Albanian rebels..

A September 1991 military coup, led by Lieutenant General Raoul Cédras, had ousted the country's elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Aristide escaped to the United States. In 1993 thousands of Haitians tried to flee to the United States as well, but more than half were sent back to Haiti by the United States Coast Guard. Although Clinton had criticized former President George H. W. Bush for returning Haitian refugees to their country, he continued part of Bush's policy because he feared that accepting refugees might encourage many more to flee to the United States and slow the formation of a democratic government in the country..Clinton was likewise deeply involved in the Middle East peace process to negotiate peace agreements between Israel and the Palestinians, as well as with the governments of Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Secret negotiations mediated by Clinton between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Chairman Yasser Arafat led to a historic declaration of peace in September 1993, called the Oslo Accords..Clinton was also confronted with problems in Iraq. In 1991, two years before Clinton became president, the United States under President George H. W. Bush participated in the Persian Gulf War to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi occupation..In regards to Iran, on May 6, 1995, Clinton signed Executive Order 12957 which implemented tight oil and trade sanctions on Iran and made it illegal for American corporations or their foreign subsidiaries to participate in any contract "for the financing of the development of petroleum resources located in Iran..North Korea's feared aim to create nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles was a serious problem for the Clinton Administration. In 1994, North Korea, a signatory of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, refused to allow international inspectors to review two nuclear waste sites...

Clinton faced yet another foreign crisis in early 1995, when the value of the Mexican peso began to fall sharply and threatened the collapse of the Mexican economy..Clinton believed the collapse of Mexico's economy would have a negative impact on the United States because of their close economic ties..After negotiations with representatives of the Cuban government, Clinton revealed in May 1995 a controversial policy reversing the decades-old policy of automatically granting asylum to Cuban refugees. Approximately 20,000 Cuban refugees detained at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba were to be admitted to the United States over a period of three months. In order to prevent a mass exodus of refugees to the United States, all future refugees would be returned to Cuba..Clinton also sought to end the conflict in Northern Ireland by arranging a peace agreement between the nationalist and unionist factions. In 1998 former Senator George Mitchell–whom Clinton had appointed to assist in peace talks–supported an accord that became known as the Good Friday Agreement...In 1995, tense relations with China and the imprisonment of an innocent American in the Communist nation, led to pressure for the U.S. to boycott the 1995 United Nations 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing.. The U.S. delegation, chaired by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and Madeleine Albright, then the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, was assigned with the task of confronting China about its human rights abuses, but not so strongly as to damage sensitive relations..On February 26, 1993,36 days after Clinton took office, terrorists who the CIA would later reveal were working under the direction of Osama bin Laden detonated a timed car bomb in the parking garage below Tower One of the World Trade Center in New York City (see the World Trade Center bombing). Clinton responded by ordering his National Security Council, under the direction of Anthony Lake, and the FBI to find and punish those responsible..In June 1995, Clinton issued Presidential Decision Directive 39, which stated that the United States "should deter, defeat and respond vigorously to all terrorist attacks on our territory and against our citizens..In 1996 Clinton signed the United States onto the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), a landmark international agreement that prohibited all signatory nations from testing nuclear weapons. The following year, he sent the treaty to the Senate for ratification and they rejected it in October 1999. International reaction to the Senate's action was uniformly negative, and the rejection was a political setback for Clinton, who had lobbied actively for its approval..Representatives had insisted that UN debt repayments be accompanied by restrictions on U.S. funding for international groups that lobbied for abortion rights in foreign countries..Clinton had vetoed similar measures in the past, but he agreed to the restrictions when faced with the prospect that the United States would lose its vote in the UN General Assembly for nonpayment of dues...

During Robertson's time at Queen's College it broke away from the University of St Andrews to become the University of Dundee, of which Robertson was one of the first graduates (MA, 1968).. During his time at University he played a full part in student life.. In 1968 Robertson was one of a number of Dundee students to invade the pitch during a rugby match at St. Andrews involving a team from the Orange Free State to protest against apartheid. The same year he organised a 24-hour work-in by students in the university library in opposition to proposed cuts by the government in student grants..Lord Robertson married Sandra Wallace on 1 June 1970.. They are the parents of 3 children: Malcolm, Martin and Rachael..Robertson survived a serious crash in January 1977 of his car with a Navy Land Rover, which was carrying 100 lb of gelignite and a box of detonators, and hit his car head-on in the Drumochter Pass, leaving him with 2 wrecked knees and a broken jaw.. Robertson was wearing a seat belt at the time and attributes his survival to this factor..The route through the pass has been used since prehistoric times.. A military road built between 1728 and 1730 by General Wade came through here...

Robertson first entered the House of Commons as a Labour MP in 1978, after having won the Hamilton by-election in May 1978, caused by the death of the incumbent Labour MP Alex Wilson in March of that year.. He beat a strong and very well-known SNP candidate, Margo MacDonald, into second place, winning an increased majority and obtaining 51% of the overall vote.. He was appointed as NATO Secretary General after German defence minister Rudolf Scharping declined to be nominated for the position, and doubts were raised about the suitability of British politician and former Royal Marine Paddy Ashdown (at that time leader of the Liberal Democrats) due to his never having held a position in government..In 1995, Robertson said that "Devolution will kill Nationalism stone dead" while he was Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland..Robertson's 3 children are former pupils of the school in Dunblane where gunman Thomas Hamilton went on the rampage in 1996, murdering 16 children and their teacher.. After the massacre, Mr Robertson, a long-time resident of the town, acted as a spokesman for the victims' families.. He was also a key figure in the subsequent campaign that led to the ban on handguns in Great Britain..In 2003, the Sunday Herald newspaper ran an article entitled "Should the Dunblane dossier be kept secret?", a reference to documents relating to the Cullen Inquiry into the massacre which are to remain classified for 100 years..

Lord Robertson has been issuing warnings about the consequences for the UK if Scotland votes Yes to independence..In an article in the Washington Post, he warned: "The residual United Kingdom would still be a major player in the world, but upon losing a third of its land mass, 5 million of its population and a huge amount of credibility, its global standing would inevitably diminish."..In a speech to the Brookings Institution on 8 April 2014 he said: "The loudest cheers for the break-up of Britain would be from our adversaries and from our enemies. For the second military power in the west to shatter this year would be cataclysmic in geo-political terms..Robertson has received numerous honours (including a total of 12 Honorary doctorates from various universities)..In addition, Lord Robertson is a Senior Counsellor at The Cohen Group, a consulting firm in Washington D.C. that provides advice and assistance in marketing and regulatory affairs..The Weir Group plc is an engineering company headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland. Željko Ražnatović (Жељко Ражнатовић, 17 April 1952 – 15 January 2000), known as Arkan (Аркан), was a Serbian career criminal and commander of a paramilitary force in the Yugoslav Wars, called the Serb Volunteer Guard.. He was on Interpol's most wanted list in the 1970s and 1980s for robberies and murders committed in a number of countries across Europe, and was later indicted by the UN for crimes against humanity for his role during the wars.. Arkan was up until his death the most powerful militia leader in the Balkans. He was assassinated in 2000, before his trial..born in Brežice in SFR Yugoslavia, a small border town in Slovenian Styria.. His father, Veljko Ražnatović, served as a decorated officer in the SFR Yugoslav Air Force, earning high rank for his notable World War II involvement on the Partisan side, and was stationed in Slovenian Styria at the time of Željko's birth. He spent part of his childhood in Zagreb (SR Croatia) and Pančevo (SR Serbia), before his father's job eventually took the family to the Yugoslav capital of Belgrade (SR Serbia), which Arkan considered his hometown..In 1972, at the age of 20, hoping to find fortune through a criminal career, he illegally emigrated to Western Europe.. Abroad, he got introduced to and kept contact with many well-known criminals from Yugoslavia such as Ljuba Zemunac, Ranko Rubežić, Đorđe "Giška" Božović, Goran Vuković, Rade "Ćenta" Ćaldović etc. all of whom, like him, were also occasionally contracted by the Yugoslav secret service.. He took the nickname "Arkan" from one of his forged passports...Arkansas ( AR-kən-saw) is a state located in the Southern region of the United States...

Serving a 7-year sentence at a prison in Amsterdam, he pulled off another escape on 8 May 1981 after someone slipped him a gun. Wasting no time, more robberies followed, this time in Germany, where after less than a month of freedom he was arrested in Frankfurt on 5 June 1981 following a jewellery store stickup..He had convictions or warrants in Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden (20 burglaries, 7 bank robberies, outside assistance to prison escape, attempted murder), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy..Arkan returned to Belgrade in May 1983, continuing his criminal career by opening a number of illegal businesses.. In November 1983, six months after his return, a bank in Zagreb was robbed, with the robbers leaving a rose on the counter — This was allegedly Arkan's signature in West Europe.. Two federal policemen in civil clothes sought after him at his mother's house on the 27 March Street...

Only days after the Croatian elections in 1990, Arkan, who was the leader of the Delije (Red Star Belgrade's Ultras), was present at the away game against Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb at Stadion Maksimir on 13 May 1990, a match which ended in a riot..Arkan and the Delije, consisting of 1,500 people, were involved in a huge fight with the home team's football hooligans..Arkan's Tigers, a paramilitary force he created, set up their headquarters and training camp in a former military facility in Erdut.. His volunteer army saw action from mid-1991 to late 1995, initially in the Vukovar region of Croatia. Arkan's much feared irregular military forces consisted of a core of 200 men and perhaps totaled no more than 500 to 1,000.. His units were supplied and equipped by the reserves of the Serbian police force during the wars in Croatia and Bosnia. Arkan had many soldiers from Western Europe countries like Germany, Russia, Greece and Belgium, all of which are linked with criminal activities in Europe..After war broke out in the former Yugoslav republic of Croatia in the fall of 1991 and in the republic of Bosnia and Hercegovina in April 1992, Arkan and his units moved to different territories in these countries..Arkan personally led most of war actions, and rewarded his most efficient officers and soldiers with ranks, medals and eventually the products of the lootings. Several younger soldiers were rewarded for their actions in and around the former national park of Tito Kopacki Rit and Bijelo Brdo..Arkan came to serve as a popular icon for both Serbs and their enemies. For some Serbs he was a folk hero and a patriot, while serving as a target of hatred to their enemies.. Arkan also had friendly relations with Russian ultra-nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky..Arkan was a powerful man with high-level connections in the state apparatus.. He had significant influence over public spheres of Serbian society.. As part of his public image, Arkan presented himself as a defender of Serbs and fighter for freedom and justice.. He clearly fostered two types of images, that of a strong, stern, and often brutal leader in public as well as a caring and reserved family man in private..Arkan became an untouchable criminal figure in Belgrade and all of the former Yugoslavia. He was really so powerful, so strong financially that no one could do anything about him..In the postwar period after the Dayton agreement was signed, Arkan returned to his interests in sport and private business...

Arkan was assassinated, on Saturday, 15 January 2000, 17:05 GMT, in the lobby of Belgrade's elite InterContinental Hotel, a location where he was surrounded by other hotel guests.. The killer, Dobrosav Gavrić, was a 23-year-old police mobile brigade's junior member..Gavrić had ties to the underworld and was on sick leave at the time. He walked up alone towards his target from behind. Arkan was sitting and chatting with two of his friends and, according to BBC Radio, was filling out a betting slip.. Gavrić waited for a few minutes, calmly walked up behind the party, and rapidly fired a succession of bullets from his CZ-99 pistol.. Arkan was shot in his left eye and lapsed into a coma on the spot..The CZ 99 is primarily chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum with a 15-round magazine.. His bodyguard Zvonko Mateović put him into a car, and rushed him to a hospital, but he died on the way. According to an article on NPR, Milošević's own men may have killed him for knowing too much..According to his wife, Svetlana Ceca Ražnatović, Arkan died in her arms as they were driving to the hospital. Arkan's companions Milenko Mandić, a business manager, and Dragan Garić, a police inspector, were also shot to death by Gavrić.. Gavrić was shot and wounded immediately after by Arkan's bodyguard, Zvonko Mateović, and fell unconscious. A female bystander was seriously wounded in the shootout as well... After complicated surgery, Gavrić survived, but remained disabled and confined to a wheelchair as the result of a spinal wound..Arkan fathered nine children by 5 different women..Still, the murderer's background and the identities of the person(s) who ordered it remain unclear and subject of rife speculation...

On the morning of 26 April 1999, 37-year-old Dando left the Chiswick home of her fiancé, Alan Farthing. She returned alone, by car, to the house she owned in Fulham.. She had lived in the house, but by April 1999 was in the process of selling it and did not visit it frequently.. As Dando reached her front door at about 11:32, she was shot once in the head..Her body was discovered about 14 minutes later by neighbour Helen Doble..Police were called at 11:47.. Dando was taken to the nearby Charing Cross Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival at 13:03 BST..At Barry George's first trial his defence barrister, Michael Mansfield QC, quoted from a National Criminal Intelligence Service report which stated that the Serbian warlord leader Arkan had ordered her assassination in retaliation for the NATO bombing of the Radio Television of Serbia headquarters on 23 April 1999..Mansfield suggested that Dando's earlier presentation of an appeal for aid for Kosovar Albanian refugees may have attracted the attention of Bosnian-Serb hardliners.. Dando's picture was on the cover of the Radio Times (edition 24 to 30 April ) in the week of her killing..An opposition journalist was assassinated outside his home in Belgrade just a few days before Dando's murder and the method used in both cases was identical...Times are hard.. You can't even find a rich thug to dance with..The Pink Panthers have operated in London..Serbian gangsters killed rival, ate him for lunch in a stew and disposed of body using a MEAT GRINDER ...

Arrow Nato Expansion

Dad's Army - Opening Titles ..
Quote:
Enlargement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is the process of including new member states in NATO.. NATO is a military alliance of a twenty-six European and two North American countries that constitutes a system of collective defence.. The process of joining the alliance is governed by Article 10 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows only for the invitation of "other European States", and by subsequent agreements.. Countries wishing to join have to meet certain requirements and complete a multi-step process involving political dialogue and military integration..After its formation in 1949 with twelve founding members, NATO grew by including Greece and Turkey in 1952 and West Germany in 1955, and then later Spain in 1982.. After the Cold War ended, and Germany reunited in 1990, there was a debate in NATO about continued expansion eastward.. In 1999, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined the organization, amid much debate within the organization and Russian opposition...

Entice the tiger to leave its mountain lair..

Another expansion came with the accession of se7en Central and Eastern European countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania.. These nations were first invited to start talks of membership during the 2002 Prague summit, and joined NATO on 29 March 2004, shortly before the 2004 Istanbul summit.. Most recently, Albania and Croatia joined on 1 April 2009, shortly before the 2009 Strasbourg–Kehl summit..In 2011, NATO officially recognized four aspiring members: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Macedonia, and Montenegro. Macedonia has been prevented from joining the alliance by Greece, one effect of the Macedonian naming dispute.. Future expansion is currently a topic of debate in several countries outside the alliance, and countries like Sweden, Finland, Serbia, and Ukraine have open political debate on the topic of membership. The incorporation of countries formerly in the Soviet sphere of influence has been a cause of increased tension between NATO countries and Russia..

Poor Mr. Billings believed he was in charge of a scientific mission for the relief of Russia .... He was in reality nothing but a mask — the Red Cross complexion of the mission was nothing but a mask...

Cornelius Kelleher, assistant to William Boyce Thompson (in George F. Kennan, Russia Leaves the War) ..

Unknown to its administrators, the Red Cross has been used from time to time as a vehicle or cover for revolutionary activities.. The use of Red Cross markings for unauthorized purposes is not uncommon.. When Tsar Nicholas was moved from Petrograd to Tobolsk allegedly for his safety (although this direction was towards danger rather than safety), the train carried Japanese Red Cross placards.. The State Department files contain examples of revolutionary activity under cover of Red Cross activities...

Lightbulb Ordo ab Chao

Libya in chaos after Western intervention..
Quote:
On 19 March 2011, a multi-state coalition began a military intervention in Libya to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973. The United Nations Intent and Voting was to have "an immediate ceasefire in Libya, including an end to the current attacks against civilians, which it said might constitute crimes against humanity" ... "imposing a ban on all flights in the country's airspace – a no-fly zone – and tightened sanctions on the Qadhafi regime and its supporters." The resolution was taken in response to events during the Libyan Civil War, and military operations began, with American and British naval forces firing over 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles, the French Air Force, British Royal Air Force, and Royal Canadian Air Force undertaking sorties across Libya and a naval blockade by Coalition forces.. Air strikes against Libyan Army tanks and vehicles by French jets were since confirmed..The official names for the interventions by the coalition members are Opération Harmattan by France; Operation Ellamy by the United Kingdom; Operation Mobile for the Canadian participation and Operation Odyssey Dawn for the United States..

After the death of Muammar Gaddafi on 20 October 2011, it was announced that the NATO mission would end on 31 October..The cost for Greece was $1 million daily..Refugees of the Libyan Civil War are the people, predominantly Libyans, who fled or were expelled from their homes during the Libyan Civil War, from within the borders of Libya to the neighbouring states of Tunisia, Egypt and Chad, as well as to European countries across the Mediterranean. The majority of Libyan refugees are Arabs and Berbers, though many of the other ethnicities temporarily living in Libya originated from sub-Saharan Africa..These groups were also among the first refugee waves to exit the country...As of January 2013, there are 5,252 refugees originating from Libya alongside 59,425 internally displaced persons..However the Le Monde article of May 14, 2014 states "Estimates of their numbers vary between 600,000 and one million by the Tunisian Ministry of Interior. If we add those, many also settled in Egypt, they would be nearly two million Libyans today outside the borders of a total population estimated at just over six million inhabitants"...

Hundreds of migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean this month, amid a surge in overcrowded boats heading for Europe from Libya..The flow of desperate migrants from North Africa hoping to reach Europe is already much higher than in the same period last year..Italy is on the frontline and has urged its EU partners to do more to help..At an emergency summit on 23 April EU leaders pledged to beef up the bloc's maritime patrols in the Mediterranean, disrupt people trafficking networks and capture and destroy boats before migrants board them..However, any military action would have to conform with international law. The chaos in war-torn Libya remains a huge problem...

Politicians, international officials and civil society leaders in southern Libya say armed groups describing themselves as militias have transformed a remote desert route from the border with Sudan into a lucrative passage to the Mediterranean coast, contributing to a surge in the numbers of migrants transiting the oil-rich country.“Most of the migrants are coming from the Sudan border,” said Youssef Ibrahim, a political activist and medical student in Marzouq, a town in Libya’s southern Sahara. “It’s always been the most dangerous for civilians but there are now militias that are securing the road. There are organised militias who secure the passage [for illegal migrants]”..

Ibrahim Jadhran, age 33 (2014), is a Libyan militia leader from Ajdabiya in eastern Libya. He participated as a rebel commander in the 2011 Libyan revolution..In 2014, Jadhran attempted to sell oil excluding the central government. The MV Morning Glory was loaded with crude oil at Sidra and broke through a weak government blockade..As a result, Ali Zeidan, the Prime Minister of Libya, was ousted by the parliament led by a Muslim Brotherhood coalition...One of the great perversities of the so-called war on terror is that fundamentalist Islamist forces have flourished as a direct consequence of it. Libya is no exception, even though such movements often have little popular support. The Muslim Brotherhood and other elements are better organised than many of their rivals, helping to remove the prime minister, push through legislation, and establish alliances with opportunistic militias..Ominously, Libya's chaos is spilling across the region. The country is awash with up to 15 million rifles and other weapons, and a report by the UN panel of experts this month found that "Libya has become a primary source of illicit weapons"..

The Prophecy II CLIP - How Does This Work?..
Quote:

Star symbol on the floor of the Mor Gabriel monastery..

In typography, a star is any of several glyphs with a number of points arrayed within an imaginary circle..Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed..A glyph is an elemental symbol within an agreed set of symbols, intended to represent a readable character for the purposes of writing and thereby expressing thoughts, ideas and concepts...

Dayro d-Mor Gabriel (Classical Syriac: ܕܝܪܐ ܕܡܪܝ ܓܒܪܐܝܠ; The Monastery of St. Gabriel), also known as Deyrulumur, is the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world..It has been involved in a dispute with the Turkish government that threatened its existence...

Four-star officers are often the most senior commanders in the armed services, having ranks such as (full) admiral, (full) general, or (in the case of air forces with a separate rank structure) air chief marshal.. This designation is also used by some armed forces that are not North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) members..

The Africa Star was awarded for a minimum of one day's service in an operational area of North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943.. The operational area includes the whole of the area between the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar, together with Malta, Abyssinia, Kenya, the Sudan, both Somalilands and Eritrea.. Areas not bordering on the Mediterranean only qualified for the Africa Star between 10 June 1940 and 27 November 1941 inclusive.. Let's understand each other.. I sang the first hymn when the stars were born...

Lauda at the Nürburgring in 1973..
Quote:
Ronald Steven Lauder (born February 26, 1944) is an American businessman, art collector, philanthropist, and political activist..Lauder was born in New York City, the son of Estée Lauder and Joseph Lauder, founders of Estée Lauder Companies.. He is the younger brother of Leonard Lauder, chairman of the board of the Estee Lauder company.. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and holds a Bachelor's degree in International Business from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.. The boys were raised Jewish..In 1984 he became a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO policy at the Pentagon..

Estee Lauder- 1980's UK Advert ..

Lauder has been instrumental in a number of cases in recovering “lost” art from the Nazi period.. He has been criticized for failure to resolve a case involving the Museum of Modern Art, which in 1997 exhibited some paintings owned by Rudolph Leopold, a Viennese doctor and art collector..In 1998, Lauder was asked by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to begin Track II negotiations with Syrian leader Hafez al-Asad; these negotiations continued after the election of Ehud Barak to the post..Lauder was elected President of the World Jewish Congress on June 10, 2007, following the resignation of Edgar Bronfman, Sr.. He beat the South African businessman Mendel Kaplan and Einat Wilf of Israel by a clear margin.. As head of the international Jewish umbrella organization, he has met with a number of heads of state and government..President George W. Bush appointed him to serve on the honorary delegation to accompany him to Jerusalem for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel in May 2008...

Lauder World Jewish Congress Berlin..

On November 16, 2001, Lauder opened the Neue Galerie in New York, an art museum across the street from the Metropolitan Museum, dedicated to art from Germany and Austria from the early 20th century..In July 2009, Bernie Ecclestone faced calls from Lauder to resign as Formula One chief after he had praised Adolf Hitler in a newspaper interview and said that Hitler “got things done.” Lauder said someone with Ecclestone's views should not be allowed to run such an important and popular racing series..In December 2009, Lauder protested against the Roman Curia's decree recognizing the heroic virtues of Pope Pius XII, asserting that an eventual beatification would be inopportune until the Holy See's historical archives from the 1939–1945 period were opened..In 2011, writing in the German newspaper Die Welt, Lauder called for Israel to be admitted into the Western defense alliance NATO: “Israel needs real guarantees for its security.. "Maybe that money that Switzerland is paying to Iran will some day be used to either buy weapons to kill Israelis, or buy weapons to kill Americans, or buy missiles to be able to deliver nuclear weapons"..Lauder has participated in a number of large media deals in Israel, among which was his purchase of part of Channel 10...

Lightbulb League of German Girls

Symbol of BDM-WGS...
Quote:

The BDM-Werk Glaube und Schönheit, the BDM-Work, Faith and Beauty Society, was founded in 1938 to serve as a tie-in between the work in the League of German Girls (BDM) and that of the Nazi Frauenschaft.. Membership was voluntary and open to girls 17 to 21..The general idea was that girls should take part in working for the whole Volksgemeinschaft (German community) before they either went on to jobs or – ideally – to marry and have children...

Gymnastics Performance..

The task of our Girls League is to raise our girls as torch bearers of the national-socialist world.. We need girls who are at harmony between their bodies, souls, and spirits.. And we need girls who, through healthy bodies and balanced minds, embody the beauty of divine creation.. We want to raise girls who believe in Germany and our leader, and who will pass these beliefs on to their future children..V to the P to the Icky to the Orrell..You remember, it was the time I got fingered by Chris Moyles and Hayley Evers reckons she saw Jo Whiley taking a dump in the sea...

Operation Gladio (Operazione Gladio) is the codename for a clandestine North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) "stay-behind" operation in Italy during the Cold War..The name Gladio is the Italian form of gladius, a type of Roman shortsword..The role of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Gladio and the extent of its activities during the Cold War era, and any relationship to terrorist attacks perpetrated in Italy during the "Years of Lead" (late 1960s to early 1980s) is the subject of debate..Switzerland and Belgium have had parliamentary inquiries into the matter..In 1990, the European parliament called for national political investigations, but most national governments have chosen not to investigate it..

The Brabant killers, also known as the Nivelles Gang ( De Bende van Nijvel, Les Tueurs du Brabant), are thought to be responsible for a series of violent attacks that mainly occurred in the province of Brabant, Belgium between 1982 and 1985, in which 28 people died and 40 were injured..1982 March 13: sneak theft of a 10-gauge fowling shotgun at a retail store in Dinant, Belgium..Two men were seen running away..Firearms were a particular interest of the gang and the 12 gauge pump shotguns used were loaded with a rare specialist heavy buckshot..Cars used, often Volkswagens, were stripped of distinctive aspects of the trim, and modifications showed a mechanic's expertise..The driver was highly skilled, and getaways were by quick but non-obvious routes, often to forested areas where the get-away cars were burnt out..

Arrow Marshall Islands

Jepilpilin ke ejukaan..
Quote:
Micronesian colonists gradually settled the Marshall Islands during the 2nd millennium BC, with inter-island navigation made possible using traditional stick charts..The European powers recognized Spanish sovereignty over the islands in 1874..They had been part of the Spanish East Indies formally since 1528..Later, Spain sold the islands to the German Empire in 1884, and they became part of German New Guinea on October 13, 1885, SMS Nautilus under Captain Rötger brought German emissaries to Jaluit..They signed a treaty with Kabua, whom the Germans had earlier recognized as "King of the Ralik Islands," on October 15..

BellyDance + League Of Nations - SM..

Japan joined the Entente during World War I and captured various German Empire colonies, including several in Micronesia..On September 29, 1914, Japanese troops occupied the Enewetak Atoll, and on September 30, 1914, the Jaluit Atoll, the administrative centre of the Marshall Islands..After the war, on June 28, 1919, Germany signed (under protest) the Treaty of Versailles.. It renounced all of its Pacific possessions, including the Marshall Islands..On December 17, 1920, the Council of the League of Nations approved the South Pacific Mandate for Japan to take over all former German colonies in the Pacific Ocean located north of the Equator..

ACcomplishment through Joint effort..

The Japanese enlarged administration and appointed local leaders, which weakened the authority of local traditional leaders.. Japan also tried to change the social organization in the islands from Matrilineality to the Japanese Patriarchal system, but with no success..On the archipelago, before it banned foreign traders, the activities of Catholic and Protestant missionaries were allowed..On March 27, 1933,Japan handed in its notice at the League of Nations, but continued to manage the islands, and in the late 1930s began building air bases on several atolls..The Marshall Islands were in an important geographical position, being the easternmost point in Japan's defensive ring at the beginning of World War II..In the months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Kwajalein Atoll was the administrative center of the Japanese 6th Fleet Forces Service, whose task was the defense of the Marshall Islands...

Documentary: "Why Zasto" - 1999 NATO bombing IN Yugoslavia..
Quote:
The air strikes lasted from March 24, 1999 to June 10, 1999..Those who were involved in the NATO airstrikes have stood by the decision to take such action. U.S President Bill Clinton's Secretary of Defense, William Cohen, said, "The appalling accounts of mass killing in Kosovo and the pictures of refugees fleeing Serb oppression for their lives makes it clear that this is a fight for justice over genocide.".. On CBS' Face the Nation Cohen claimed, "We've now seen about 100,000 military-aged men missing. ... They may have been murdered."..Clinton, citing the same figure, spoke of "at least 100,000 (Kosovar Albanians) missing"... Later, Clinton said about Yugoslav elections, "they're going to have to come to grips with what Mr. Miloševi? ordered in Kosovo. ..They're going to have to decide whether they support his leadership or not; whether they think it's OK that all those tens of thousands of people were killed. ..."[ In the same press conference, Clinton also claimed "NATO stopped deliberate, systematic efforts at ethnic cleansing and genocide.".. Clinton compared the events of Kosovo to the Holocaust. CNN reported, "Accusing Serbia of 'ethnic cleansing' in Kosovo similar to the genocide of Jews in World War II, an impassioned Clinton sought Tuesday to rally public support for his decision to send U.S. forces into combat against Yugoslavia, a prospect that seemed increasingly likely with the breakdown of a diplomatic peace effort.".. President Clinton's State Department also claimed Serbian troops had committed genocide. The New York Times reported, "the Administration said evidence of 'genocide' by Serbian forces was growing to include 'abhorrent and criminal action' on a vast scale.. The language was the State Department's strongest up to that time in denouncing Yugoslav President Slobodan Miloševi?.".. The State Department also gave the highest estimate of dead Albanians..In May 1996, Defense Secretary William Cohen suggested that there might be up to 100,000 Albanian fatalities..The Clinton administration were accused of inflating the number of Kosovar Albanians killed by Serbians..The United Nations Charter does not allow military interventions in other sovereign countries with few exceptions which, in general, need to be decided upon by the United Nations Security Council..Amnesty International released a report which stated that NATO forces had deliberately targeted a civilian object..On May 7, NATO bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, killing three Chinese journalists. NATO had aimed at a Yugoslav military target, but navigational errors led to the wrong building being targeted..

Warning sign about NATO cluster bombs near ski slopes at Kopaonik..

Throughout the war; 181 NATO strikes were reported against tanks, 317 against armored personnel vehicles, 800 against other military vehicles, and 857 against artillery and mortars, after a total of 38,000 sorties, or 200 sorties per day at the beginning of the conflict and over 1,000 at the end of the conflict..When it came to alleged hits, 93 tanks, 153 APCs, 339 other vehicles, and 389 artillery systems were believed to have been disabled or destroyed with certainty..The Yugoslav Air Force also sustained serious damage, with 121 aircraft destroyed..It was only in the later stages of the campaign that strategic targets such as bridges and buildings were attacked in any systematic way, causing significant disruption and economic damage..This stage of the campaign led to controversial incidents..Relatives of Italian soldiers believe 50 of them have died since the war due to their exposure to depleted uranium weapons..In 2000, a year after the bombing ended, Group 17 published a survey dealing with damage and economic restoration..

The first NATO troops to enter Pristina on the 12th of June 1999 were Norwegian special forces from FSK Forsvarets Spesialkommando and soldiers from the British Special Air Service 22 S.A.S, although to NATO's diplomatic embarrassment Russian troops arrived first at the airport..The Norwegian soldiers from FSK Forsvarets Spesialkommando were the first to come in contact with the Russian troops at the airport.. FSK's mission was to level the negotiating field between the belligerent parties, and to fine-tune the detailed, local deals needed to implement the peace deal between the Serbians and the Kosovo Albanians..During the initial incursion, the U.S. soldiers were greeted by Albanians cheering and throwing flowers as U.S. soldiers and KFOR rolled through their villages..Although no resistance was met, three U.S. soldiers from the Initial Entry Force lost their lives in Incidents..Following the military campaign, the involvement of Russian peacekeepers proved to be tense and challenging to the NATO Kosovo force..In 2010 James Blunt (born 22 February 1974) in an interview described how his unit was given the assignment of securing the Pristina in advance of the 30,000-strong peacekeeping force and the Russian army had moved in and taken control of the airport before his unit's arrival...

The United States has a point in noting that its commitment is disproportionately large. Last year it spent 3.6% of its GDP on defence, the highest ratio of any NATO member (and the highest total military budget in the world by a hefty margin)..That is almost double the target of 2% of GDP that NATO members all agreed to in 2006. At the time six members reached the threshold; last year five did..
