The Jew's harp was called a 'trump' in Scots, also referred to as the Tongue of the Trump.. It is not known why the village had the apparent monopoly of the 'trumps' trade, however other examples exist, such as Stewarton for Scots bonnets, Colinsburgh for corkscrews, and Culross for girdles. The Jew’s Harp was one of the most popular and cheap musical instruments and records show that hundreds of Thousands were imported from at least the 15th century... It was thought that manufacturing of the instrument in the UK did not start until the Industrial Revolution, when it was centred around Dudley in the West Midlands..Dr Landsborough in 1837 wrote that although the hamlet was in ruins, the spirit of the pipers and harpers lived on in the fondness that the people of Stevenston had for Music...

King Solomon's Mines (1885) is a popular novel by the Victorian adventure writer and fabulist Sir H. Rider Haggard. It tells of a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers led by Allan Quatermain for the missing brother of one of the party. It is the first English adventure novel set in Africa, and is considered to be the Genesis of the Lost World literary genre..

Allan Quatermain, an adventurer and white hunter based in Durban, in what is now South Africa, is approached by aristocrat Sir Henry Curtis and his friend Captain Good, seeking his help finding Sir Henry's brother, who was last seen travelling north into the unexplored interior on a quest for the fabled King Solomon's Mines. Quatermain has a mysterious map purporting to lead to the mines, but had never taken it seriously. However, he agrees to lead an expedition in return for a share of the treasure, or a stipend for his son if he is killed along the way. He has little hope they will return alive, but reasons that he has already outlived most people in his profession, so dying in this manner at least ensures that his son will be provided for. They also take along a mysterious native, Umbopa, who seems more regal, handsome and Well-spoke n than most Porters of his class, but who is very anxious to Join the Party...

This 3at is also notable for modifications in the species' paws... It is one of the few felids with semi-retractable 3laws..The word "cheetah" is derived from the Sanskrit word citrakāyaḥ, meaning "variegated", via the Hindi 'चीता' (cītā)..It is thought that the species went through a prolonged period of inbreeding following a genetic bottleneck during the last ice age...The cheetah's chest is deep and its waist is narrow..The coarse, short fur of the cheetah is tan with round black spots measuring from 2 to 3 cm (0.79 to 1.2 in) across, affording it some camouflage while hunting...The leopard Panthera pardus, is a member of the Felidae family and the smallest of the four "big cats" in the genus Panthera, the other three being the tiger, lion, and Jaguar..and are Agile and Stealthy Predators...Melanism in leopards is inherited as a Mendelian, Monogenic recessive trait relative to the 19pO-TTed 6O-RhAm..

"Ironbottom Sound" (Iron Bottom Sound or Ironbottomed Sound) is the name given by Allied sailors to Savo Sound, the stretch of water at the southern end of The Slot between Guadalcanal, Savo Island, and Florida Island of the Solomon Islands, because of the dozens of ships and planes that sank there during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942-43.. Prior to the war, it was called Sealark Channel.. Every year on the battle's anniversary, a US ship in the area cruises into the waters and drops a wreath to commemorate those who lost their lives. For many Navy sailors, and those that served in the area during that time, the waters in this area are considered sacred, and strict silence is observed as ships cruise through...

Probably the most obvious characteristic of a witch was the ability to cast a spell, "spell" being the word used to signify the means employed to carry out a magical action. A spell could consist of a set of words, a formula or verse, or a ritual action, or any combination of these.. Spells traditionally were cast by many methods, such as by the inscription of runes or sigils on an object to give it magical powers; by the immolation or binding of a wax or clay image (poppet) of a person to affect him or her magically; by the recitation of incantations; by the performance of physical rituals; by the employment of magical herbs as amulets or potions; by gazing at mirrors, swords or other specula (scrying) for purposes of divination; and by many other means...

From her perch along Bay Street downtown, just behind a line of yellow police tape, Jennifer Kucheski could only speculate Saturday afternoon about what had happened only hours earlier...

But one thing was clear.

A car, driven by Savannah resident Donna Haddock, had sped north on Drayton Street, jumped the curb at Bay Street, knocked down a section of antique, wrought-iron fencing, taken out a 19th century terra cotta statue, snapped a lamppost in half, soared over a pedestrian walkway and come to a grinding halt at the front steps of the Savannah Cotton Exchange.

The freak accident happened about 7:15 a.m.

From Kucheski's angle, six hours later, all she could see was the underbelly of the smashed red car as its length filled the grand entrance to what has served as home for Solomon's Lodge, a Freemasons organization, since 1972.

"I hope she made it," the Augusta resident said of the driver. She paused, then added, "Everyone here thought it was a convertible"..Judy Pal, spokeswoman for Savannah-Chatham police, said Haddock was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Haddock was unable to tell police what had happened, although Pal said investigators are certain the vehicle went airborne after hitting the fountain and its water-spouting lion...

Savannah's historic district has 22 squares..It is Georgia's 5th-largest city and 3rd-largest metropolitan area..The cotton industry in Lancashire was served by the Manchester Royal Exchange which traded in spun yarn and finished goods throughout the world including Africa while the Liverpool Cotton Exchange traded in imported raw cotton. In the 18th century the trade was part of part the slave trade in which African slaves were transported to America where the cotton was grown and then exported to Liverpool where the raw cotton was sold..The exchange was seriously damaged during World War II when it took a direct hit from a bomb during a German air raid in the Manchester Blitz at Christmas in 1940..The building was damaged on 15 June 1996 when an IRA bomb exploded in Corporation Street less than 50 yards away...

Hexagram Star.. The sword blades cross to form a 'Hexagram,' or 6-sided star.. This was apparently a major pagan symbol of the ancient world.. It is the same structure as a Hebrew 'Star of David,' and it has been speculated that the Jews may have adopted and adapted the icon as their own during the Babylonian Captivity...
Quote:
Carl Orff, (1895-1982), born in Münich, Germany, was a multi-faceted musician and prolific composer known particularly for his operas and dramatic works and for his innovations in music education. He enjoyed international renown as the world's pre-eminent authority on children's music education, his life's work in that area represented by Musik für Kinder (Music for children), five eclectic collections of music to be performed by children, eventually developing into a more extensive series known as Orff Schulwerk, a manual describing his method of conducting, which was first published in 1930.

Orff's system of music education for children, largely based on developing a sense of rhythm through group exercise and performance with percussion instruments, has been widely adopted. In 1924 in Münich he founded, with the German gymnast Dorothee Günther, the Günther School for gymnastics, dance, and music.

The following year, Orff made three stage adaptations of works by Monteverdi. Continuing his work in the area of Baroque music, Orff became conductor of the Münich Bach society in 1930, a position he held until 1933. The experience of performing Baroque music, particularly sacred works for the stage, convinced Orff that an effective musical performance must fuse music, words and movement, a goal no doubt partly inspired by his work with the Güntherschule.

Orff embodied his conception of music in the fabulously successful secular oratorio Carmina Burana (1937), which in many ways defined him as a composer. Based on an important collection of Latin and German Goliard poems found in the monastery of Benediktbeuern - one of the oldest Benedictine Monasteries in Bavaria - this work exemplifies Orff's search for an idiom that would reveal the elemental power of music, allowing the listener to experience music as a overwhelming, primitive force. Goliard poetry, which not only celebrates love and wine, but also pokes fun at the clergy, perfectly suited Orff's desire to create a musical work appealing to a fundamental musicality that, as he believed, every human being possesses.

Eschewing melodic development and harmonic complexity, and articulating his musical ideas through basic sonorities and easily discernible rhythmic patterns, Orff created an idiom which many found irresistible. The perceived "primitivism" of Carmina burana notwithstanding, Orff believed that the profound appeal of music is not merely physical. This belief is reflected by many other works, including musical dramas based on Greek tragedies, namely, Antigonae (1949), Oedipus der Tyrann (1959), and Prometheus (1966). These works, as well as some compositions on Christian themes, followed the composer's established dramatic and compositional techniques, but failed to repeat the tremendous success of Carmina Burana. His last work, De temporum fine comoedia (A Comedy about the End of Time) premiered at the 1973 Salzburg Festival. Nine years later, Carl Orff died in Münich, where he had spent his entire life...

Quote:
Orff’s oratorio comprises cantata composed for solo voices, choir, and orchestra and which he organized into scenes. [The cantata is a composite vocal form that contains a number of movements, such as arias, duets, and choruses.] Orff’s composition has a circular structure, in that it begins and ends with “O Fortuna” (tracks 1 and 6). Through this structure Orff highlighted the medieval conception of the wheel of fortune, which is always turning and which exposes human life to constant alternations between good and poor luck.. The three major central sections of the oratorio are devoted to human appreciation for nature, especially as nature comes to life in the spring (track 3); human appreciation for gifts of nature, particularly wine (track 4); and human appreciation for love, which is sometimes associated with spring, sometimes wine, and sometimes both (track 5). After Orff comes an intermezzo unrelated to the Carmina Burana: track 7 is an early twelfth-century song (attested in at least two manuscripts: Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, fonds latin, MS 3549 and MS 3719) that offers an allegorical interpretation of King Solomon's temple .. This is a polyphonic song. [Polyphony is music that assembles simultaneously several voice-parts of distinctive design, as opposed to monophonic music where there is a single melody or homophonic music where there are several voice-parts of identical design. The different voice-parts in this song are mostly consonant, but even so they are often enough separate even though simultaneous to sound very different from harmonic sonority as we think of it.. On March 23 we will examine a very heterogeneous assemblage of texts and legends associated with Solomon...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nG-0s5BnO-0

According to the Evolutionary Model, the origins of polyphonic singing are much deeper, and are connected to the earlier stages of human evolution; polyphony was an important part of a defence system of the hominids, and traditions of polyphony are gradually disappearing all over the world..European polyphony rose out of melismatic organum, the earliest harmonization of the chant..12th-century composers, such as Léonin and Pérotin developed the organum that was introduced centuries earlier, and also added a third and fourth voice to the now homophonic chant.. In the 13th century, the chant-based tenor was becoming altered, fragmented, and hidden beneath secular tunes, obscuring the sacred texts as composers continued to play with this new invention called polyphony.. The lyrics of love poems might be sung above sacred texts in the form of a trope, or the sacred text might be placed within a familiar secular melody..The oldest surviving piece of six-part music is the English rota Sumer is icumen in (c. 1240). (Albright, 2004)..The title translates approximately to "Summer Has Come In" or "Summer Has Arrived"..It was in 1364, during the pontificate of Pope Urban V, that composer and priest Guillaume de Machaut composed the first polyphonic setting of the mass called La Messe de Nostre Dame..

Sumer (from Akkadian Šumeru; Sumerian ki-en-ĝir15, approximately "land of the civilized kings" or "native land" was an ancient civilization and historical region in southern Mesopotamia, modern Iraq, during the Chalcolithic (Catholic) and Early Bronze Age..The Chalcolithic (Ancient Greek: χαλκός, khalkós, "copper" + Ancient Greek: λίθος, líthos, "stone") period or Copper Age, also known as the Eneolithic/Æneolithic (from Latin aeneus "of bronze"), is a phase of the Bronze Age in which the addition of tin to copper to form bronze during smelting remained yet unknown by the metallurgists of the times..Cornwall and Devon provided most of the United Kingdom's tin, copper and arsenic until the 20th century. Originally the tin was found as alluvial deposits in the gravels of stream beds, but eventually underground working took place. Tin lodes outcropped on the cliffs and underground mines sprang up as early as the 16th century...

The manuscript deals with the creation of talismans, and is divided into 2 parts, the first of which details methods for their manufacture "under the fixed stars" and the second "under the twenty-eight mansions of the moon.." Both sets of concepts were popular in mediaeval and later European astrological and magical practice, having apparently been incorporated into them from Arabic astronomical and astrological treatises composed during the "Golden Age" of Arabic science from the middle of the 8th to the middle of the 13th centuries.. This first published edition comprises an Introduction in which Silens Manus explores the history of the manuscript, and its relationship with other early magical works, notably those of Cornelius Agrippa..

The Book of Abramelin tells the story of an Egyptian mage named Abramelin, or Abra-Melin, who taught a system of magic to Abraham of Worms, a German Jew presumed to have lived from c.1362–c.1458. The system of magic from this book regained popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries due to the efforts of Mathers' translation, The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, its import within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and later within the mystical system of Thelema (created in 1904 by Aleister Crowley)...

The grimoire is framed as a sort of epistolary novel or autobiography in which Abraham of Worms describes his journey from Germany to Egypt and reveals Abramelin's magical and Kabbalistic secrets to his son Lamech..Lamech ( Hebrew: לֶמֶךְ‎) is a person in the genealogies of Adam in the Book of Genesis. He is the sixth generation descendant of Cain (Genesis 4:18); his father was named Methusael, and he was responsible for the "Song of the Sword"..Magic squares feature prominently in the instructions for carrying out these operations, as does a recipe for an anointing oil (taken from Exodus 30), popularly used by ceremonial magicians under the name "Abramelin Oil". There are also several further tools - such as a holy Lamp, a Wand made of an almond branch, a recipe for incense known today as "Abramelin Incense" (also taken from Exodus 30), various Robes, a square or 7-sided plate of silver or (bees) wax, etc...

Quote:
Then Lamech took for himself 2 wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.. And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.. His brother’s name was Jubal.. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute.. And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah..

Then Lamech said to his wives:

"Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech!
For I have killed a man for wounding me,
Even a young man for hurting me.

If Cain shall be avenged 7fold,
Then Lamech 77fold."

—Genesis 4:19-24 (NKJV)...

Solomon and was the first independent investment banking firm on Wall Street, created to mirror the ethos and culture of the original privately held investment banks at a time when many of the large investment banks had gone public.. The mosaic pavement of the lodge is discussed in the lecture of the first degree..

This is commonly described as the checkered carpet which covers the floor of the lodge. The lecture says that the mosaic pavement “is a representation of the ground floor of King Solomon’s Temple” and is “emblematic of human life, checkered with good and evil.”

In the account of King Solomon’s Temple in the Bible, the ground floor is said to be made of pine or fir, depending on which translation of the Bible that you read (1 Ki 6:15). It is hard to imagine that pine or fir flooring would be particularly mosaic in nature. However, it can be agreed that the mosaic pavement represents the ground floor of King Solomon’s Temple in the Entered Apprentice degree because that ceremony symbolically takes place in that location.

While these facts may not be particularly intriguing, the symbolism of the checkered carpeting presents some interesting concepts.

Mackey’s Encyclopedia of Freemasonry discusses the symbol of the the mosaic pavement.

“The mosaic pavement in an old symbol of the Order. It is met with in the earliest rituals of the last century. It is classed among the ornaments of the lodge along with the indented tessel and the blazing star. Its party-colored stones of black and white have been readily and appropriately interpreted as symbols of the evil and good of human life.”

The lecture pertaining to the 15th Degree, Knight of the East and West, discusses the idea of duality or good and evil as a conflict. Pike writes “God is great, and good, and wise. Evil and pain and sorrow are temporary, and for wise and beneficent purposes…Ultimately, Good will prevail, and Evil be overthrown”..

So from this information, it can be understood that the concept of duality has played a part in Masonic symbolism since the early days of the fraternity. While duality is not often discussed in the ritual of the Blue Lodge, the Scottish Rite mentions this concept numerous times. The Rite makes the ideas of dualism, or opposition, in the universe an important part of its theme. Indeed, the ideas of the Kabbala and the Alchemists are used in the Scottish Rite to discuss this concept in several of the degrees...

Lecturer.: This, my brother, is the first of the Philosophical degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Rite, and the beginning of a course of instruction which will fully unveil the heart and inner mysteries of Masonry. Do not despair because you have often seemed on the point of attaining the inmost light, and have as often been disappointed. In all time truth has been hidden under symbols, and often under a succession of allegories - where veil after veil had to be penetrated before the true light was reached and the essential truth stood revealed.

We are about to approach those ancient religions which once ruled the minds of men, and whose ruins encumber the plains of the great Past, as the broken columns of Palmyra and Tadmor lie bleaching on the sands of the desert. They rise before us - those old, strange, mysterious creeds and faiths - shrouded in the mists of antiquity, and stalk dimly and undefinedly along the line that divides time from eternity, and forms of strange, wild, startling beauty mingle in the vast throng of figures with shapes monstrous, grotesque, and hideous.

The religion taught by Moses, which, like the laws of Egypt, enunciated the principle of exclusion, borrowed at every period of its existence from all the creeds with which it came in contact. . While by the study of the learned and wise, it enriched itself with the most admirable principles of the religions of Egypt and Asia, it was changed in the wanderings of the people, by everything that was impure or seductive in the pagan manners and superstitions. It was one thing in the time of Aaron and Moses, another in that of David and Solomon, and still another in that of Daniel and Philo.

At the time when John the Baptist made his appearance in the desert, near the shores of the Dead Sea, all the old philosophical and religious systems were approximating to each other, while the philosophers of Greece, all (except the disciples of Epicurus) more or less Platonicians, seized eagerly upon the beliefs and doctrines of the East. The Jews and Egyptians, before then the most exclusive of all people, yielded to that eclectism which prevailed among their masters, the Greeks and Romans. It was held by a vast number, even during the preachings of Paul, that the writings of the Apostles were incomplete, that they contained only the germs of another doctrine, which must receive from the hands of philosophy not only the systematic arrangement which was wanting, but all the developments which lay concealed therein-mysteries handed down from generation to generation in esoteric tradition...

http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...8&postcount=43I’ll have you know that a soldier is the most holy of all humans because he is the most tested—most tested of all. I’ll try to tell you. Look now—in all of history men have been taught that killing of men is an evil thing not to be countenanced. Any man who kills must be destroyed because this is a great sin, maybe the worst sin we know. And then we take a soldier and put murder in his hands and we say to him, “Use it well, use it wisely.” We put no checks on him. Go out and kill as many of a certain kind or classification of your brothers as you can. And we will reward you for it because it is a violation of your early training...http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...&postcount=528

http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...2&postcount=91It is quite a 3 pipe problem, and I beg that you won't speak to me for 50 minutes...In solving a problem of this sort, the grand thing is to be able to reason backward.; That is a very useful accomplishment, and a very easy one, but people do not practise it much.. In the everyday affairs of life it is more useful to reason forward, and so the other comes to be neglected. There are 50 who can reason synthetically for 1 who can reason analytically...http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...&postcount=591

Important human migrations occurred in the Pacific in prehistoric times..Long-distance trade developed all along the coast from Mozambique to Japan. Trade, and therefore knowledge, extended to the Indonesian Islands but apparently not Australia..The scene shifts to San Francisco, where an unmarried couple, Goodman and Palmer purchase an expensive 19th-century polychrome house in the exclusive Pacific Heights neighborhood.. They rent 1 of the building's 2 first-floor apartments to the Watanabes, a kindly Japanese couple who have no children. Not long after, Hayes visits to view the remaining vacant unit and immediately expresses a desire to move in..Hayes arrives unannounced one morning and shuts himself into the apartment.. When Drake finally makes an attempt to enter Hayes' apartment, he finds that the locks have been changed..Due to the effects of plate tectonics, the Pacific Ocean is currently shrinking by roughly an inch per year (2–3 cm/yr) on 3 sides, roughly averaging 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) a year.. By contrast, the Atlantic Ocean is increasing in size..As the Pacific straddles the 180th meridian, the West Pacific (or western Pacific, near Asia) is in the Eastern Hemisphere, while East Pacific (or eastern Pacific, near the Americas) is in the Western Hemisphere...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h81Ojd3d2rY

The novel begins with Roland and his ka-tet arriving at a river on their journey to the Dark Tower.. An elderly man who operates a ferry gets them across the river, and warns them that a severe depression is coming, and that they can find shelter in a building a few miles ahead. They reach the shelter just in time, and while they wait out the storm, Roland tells them of an adventure in his youth to keep them occupied.. "The Skin-Man"..It is, therefore, advisable to know that the hours of the day and of the night together, are 24 in number, and that each hour is governed by one of the 7 Planets in regular order, commencing at the highest and descending to the lowest.. The order of the Planets is as follows: ShBThAI, Shabbathai, Saturn; beneath Saturn is TzDQ, Tzedeq, Jupiter; beneath Jupiter is MADIM, Madim, Mars; beneath Mars is ShMSh, Shemesh, the Sun; beneath the Sun is NVGH, Nogah, Venus; beneath Venus is KVKB, Kokav, Mercury; and beneath Mercury is LBNH, Levanah, the Moon, which is the lowest of all the Planets..It must, therefore, be understood that the Planets have their dominion over the day which approacheth nearest unto the name which is given and attributed unto them-viz., over Saturday, Saturn; Thursday, Jupiter; Tuesday, Mars; Sunday, the Sun; Friday, Venus; Wednesday, Mercury; and Monday, the Moon...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsIF-yJCeZs

A lock is a mechanical or electronic fastening device that is released by a physical object (such as a key, fingerprint, RFID card, or security token), by supplying secret information (such as a keycode or password), or by a combination thereof..The earliest known lock and key device was discovered in the ruins of Nineveh, the capital of ancient Assyria.. Locks such as this were later developed into the Egyptian wooden pin lock, which consisted of a bolt, door fixture, and key...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTBO5ksaT2w
