Barbecue (also barbeque, BBQ and barbiqueue) is a method and apparatus for char grilling food in the hot smoke of a wood fire, usually charcoal fueled. In the United States, to grill is to cook in this manner quickly, while barbecue is typically a much slower method utilizing less heat than grilling, attended to over an extended period of several hours.."Barbecue – a hog dressed whole"..Heracleum sphondylium, common names hogweed or common hogweed, is a herbaceous perennial or biennial plant of the family Apiaceae, native to Europe and Asia. It is an umbelliferous plant, in the same group as fennel, cow parsley, ground elder and giant hogweed..The sap of giant hogweed causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters, long-lasting scars, and—if it comes in contact with eyes—blindness.. These serious reactions are due to the furocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant..has a stout, dark reddish-purple stem and spotted leaf stalks that are hollow and produce sturdy bristles. Stems vary from 3–8 cm (1.2–3.1 in) in diameter, occasionally up to 10 cm (3.9 in).."Turn and run! Date 7–12 December 1942..'Cockle' Mark 2..Operation Frankton was a commando raid on shipping in the German occupied French port of Bordeaux in the Bay of Biscay during the Second World War. The raid was carried out by a small unit of Royal Marines known as the Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment (RMBPD), part of Combined Operations.. The British Prime Minister Winston Churchill believed the mission shortened World War II by 6 Mths and Admiral Louis Mountbatten, the commander of Combined Operations, deemed the raid "the most courageous and imaginative of all the raids ever carried out by the men of Combined Operations"...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVBPGZEVRH0

Mark II canoes, which were given the codename of Cockle, were selected for the raid..The Mark II was a semi rigid 2-man canoe, with the sides made of canvas, a flat bottom, and 15 feet (4.6 m) in length. When collapsed it had to be capable of getting in and out of the 24 inches (610 mm) wide submarine hatch.[9] During the raid each canoe's load would be 2 men, 8 limpet mines,3 sets of paddles, a compass, a depth sounding reel, repair bag, torch, camouflage net, waterproof watch, fishing line,2 hand grenades, rations and water for 6 days, a spanner to activate the mines and a magnet to hold the canoe against the side of cargo ships.. The men also carried a .45 ACP pistol and a Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife..On 10 December the Germans announced that a sabotage squad had been caught on 8 December near the mouth of the Gironde and "finished off in combat". It was not until January 1943 in the absence of other information all 10 men on the raid were posted missing, until news arrived of 2 of them.. Later it was confirmed that 5 ships had been damaged in Bordeaux by mysterious X-plosions.. This information remained until new research of 2010 revealed that a 6th ship had been damaged even more extensively than any of the other 5 reported. This research also revealed that the other 5 ships holed were back in service very shortly afterwards...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qvvbn7IObZ4

For their part in the raid Major Hasler was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Marine Sparks the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM)..Corporal Laver and Marine Mills were also recommended for the DSM which at the time could not be awarded posthumously, so instead they were mentioned in dispatches..Of men who never returned Sergeant Wallace and Marine Ewart were captured on 8 December at the Pointe de Grave (near Le Verdon) and revealed only certain information during their interrogation, and were executed under the Commando Order, on the night 11 December in a sandpit in a wood north of Bordeaux and not at Chateau Magnol, Blanquefort.. A plaque has been erected on the bullet marked wall at the Chateau, but the authenticity of the details on the plaque has been questioned.. A small memorial can also be seen at the Pointe de Grave, where they were captured. In March 2011 a major c. 100,000 euro memorial was to be unveiled at this same spot..After the Royal Marines were executed by a naval firing squad, the Commander of the Navy Admiral Erich Raeder wrote in the Seekriegsleitung war diary that the executions of the captured Royal Marines were something "new in international law, since the soldiers were wearing uniforms"..After having been set ashore, Lieutenant MacKinnon and Marine Conway managed to evade capture for four days, but they were betrayed and arrested by the Gendarmerie and handed over to the Germans at La Reole hospital 30 miles (48 km) south east of Bordeaux, attempting to make their way to the Spanish border. Mackinnon had been admitted to the hospital for treatment for an infected knee..The X-act date of their X-ecution is not known.. New evidence shows that Lieutenant Mackinnon, Corporal Laver, Marine Mills and Marine Conway were not executed in Paris in 1942 but in the same location as Wallace and Ewart under the Commando Order..Corporal Sheard and Marine Moffatt were not drowned on the first night but died of the cold..The body of Marine Moffatt was found on the Île de Ré on 14 December but Corporal Sheard’s body is believed to have been recovered and buried elsewhere further up the coastline.. Corporal Sheard is remembered on the Hero's Stone at his place of birth, North Corner, Devonport...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UNEtgQO8Wg

Sergeant John Battersby, 31, of Lancashire, and Corporal Lee Fitzsimmons, 26, from Peterborough, died when their RAF Puma crashed near Baghdad in 2007 after the Puma helicopter in which they were chasing insurgents crash-landed before Xploding..The pilot of the helicopter, known only as Soldier J, told an inquest into the deaths of the 2 men that he believed their lives would not have been lost if he had not had to use shoddy radio devices..He also said that he believed the radio system was still being used in theatre..He said that if he had been equipped with "a radio that worked", he would have had a clearer understanding of the events going on around him and safely landed his Puma helicopter..Instead the aircraft, loaded with SAS personnel and huge amounts of ammunition, crashed while trying to land...

Kingsman is also a family name, believed to have derived from certain farmers in the Middle Ages held their land directly from the king, without any feudal lord in between. Descendant families include Kingman, Kinsman and Kinman..A cenotaph is an "empty tomb" or a monument erected in honour of a person or group of people whose remains are elsewhere. It can also be the initial tomb for a person who has since been interred elsewhere.. The word derives from the Greek: κενοτάφιον = kenotaphion (kenos, one meaning being "empty", "tomb")..The vast majority of cenotaphs are erected in honour of individuals, many noted cenotaphs are instead dedicated to the memories of groups of individuals, such as the lost soldiers of one country or empire..Cenotaphs were common in the ancient world with many built in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and across Northern Europe (in the shape of Neolithic barrows)..Memorial was designed by Mr. Arthur, who became a senior partner in the architectural firm of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope of Bolton in 1902.. On 1–2 May 2011 DEVGRU's Red Squadron undertook the covert operation codenamed Operation Neptune Spear, under the CIA's authority, and killed Osama bin Laden, leader of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, at his compound 34°11′15.3882″N 73°14′33.3954″E in the city of Abbottabad, 113 kilometers from Islamabad, the Federal capital of Pakistan..The attack itself lasted 38 minutes. Bin Laden's adult son, a woman, and 2 couriers were also killed..There were no casualties to the team. They had practiced the mission "on both American coasts" and in a segregated section of Camp Alpha at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan in early April 2011, using a one-acre replica of bin Laden's compound..Modified MH-60 helicopters from the U.S. Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment carried DEVGRU operators and paramilitary operatives from the CIA's Special Activities Division. Other personnel supported with tactical signals, intelligence collectors, and navigators using highly classified hyperspectral imagers from Ghazi Air Base in Pakistan...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGhGHxw0mSo

15 members of DEVGRU's Gold Squadron were among the 38 killed on Saturday, 6 August 2011 in Maidan Wardak province, Afghanistan, when a Chinook helicopter flown by B Company, 7th Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment, was shot down by a Taliban-fired rocket-propelled grenade; the crash wiped out an entire troop.. The personnel killed in the helicopter crash are said to have belonged to an "immediate reaction force" that were en route to intercept a group of Taliban who were escaping the area following an operation by United States Army Rangers.. It was the largest single loss of U.S. life since the beginning of the 2001 Afghan War, and is the largest single loss ever suffered by the SEALs...

In a mission codenamed Octave Fusion, on 24 January 2012, DEVGRU operators successfully rescued American Jessica Buchanan, 32, and Dane Poul Hagen Thisted, 60, who had been detained by Somali bandits in north-central Somalia..Officials stated plans for a rescue operation had been under development for weeks, but acted after discovering that Buchanan's health was deteriorating due to an undisclosed illness...DEVGRU was prepared to capture the hostage takers but this proved unfeasible and 9 "heavily armed" kidnappers were killed..On Tuesday 28 May 2012, a joint British SAS and DEVGRU operation rescued British aid worker Helen Johnston and three colleagues held captive by the Taliban in Badakhshan, Eastern Afghanistan..The JSO team flew to a pre-arranged rendezvous about 2 miles from where the hostages were being held and patrolled two miles through thick forest, moving into assault positions around the caves.. The SAS team and SEALs assaulted the locations simultaneously rescuing all hostages successfully and killed a number of Taliban insurgents. There were no casualties amongst the rescue team..8 Dec-ember 2012, DEVGRU rescued Dilip Joseph, an American doctor held captive by the Taliban in Eastern Afghanistan. Dr. Joseph, who was working for an aid organization, was kidnapped along with 2 Afghan colleagues at a road block by armed men and were moved to a compound in LP-rovince..2 Afghans were later released after negotiations.. During the operation at least 6 of his T-alinan captors were killed ..On October 5, 2013, United States Navy SEAL Team Six launched a raid against a beachside house to capture (to gain intelligence) a key member of Al-Shabaab..

6 August 2011, a U.S. Boeing CH-47 Chinook military helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down while transporting a quick reaction force attempting to reinforce an engaged unit of Army Rangers in Wardak province, west of Kabul, Afghanistan..The resulting crash killed all 38 people on board—25 American special operations personnel,5 US Army National Guard and Army Reserve crewmen,7 Afghan commandos, and 1 Afghan interpreter—U.S. military working dog..It is considered the worst loss of U.S Military life in a single incident in the Afghanistan campaign, surpassing Operation Red Wings in 2005 (Note: during Operation Red Wings, on 28 June 2005, a Chinook helicopter carrying a U.S. Navy SEAL team was shot down by a RPG round as it attempted to X-tract U.S. troops on the ground)..O-peration then became known as "Red Wings II" and lasted approximately 3 more weeks..Several weeks later, Shah's group in Kunar Province was stricken to a point of inoperability and Shah was seriously wounded, during Operation Whalers, in Au-gust 2005...

United States Navy's Sea, Air, Land Teams, commonly known as the Navy SEALs, are the U.S. Navy's principal special operations force and a part of the Naval Special Warfare Command and United States Special Operations Command..SEALs duty is to conduct small-unit maritime military operations which originate from, and return to a river, ocean, swamp, delta or coastline. SEALs can negotiate shallow water areas such as the Persian Gulf ..When I left the Royal Navy in 1947 I began to train for the Methodist Ministry as a theological student at Manchester University. This led me to a study of the ancient Semitic languages – including Old Testament Hebrew and Aramaic—and I became progressively more interested in the language and less in Teaology...

All SEALs are male members of the United States Navy.. The CIA's highly secretive Special Activities Division (SAD) and more specifically its elite Special Operations Group (SOG) recruits operators from the SEAL Teams.[8] Joint Navy SEALs and CIA operations go back to the famed MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War.. This coop-eration still exists today and is seen in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan..Due to their reputation as one of the world's premier special operations forces, SEAL operators routinely serve in allied SOF's including the British Special Air Service, Special Boat Service and Polish GROM...The modern day U.S. Navy SEALs can trace their roots to World War II..United States Navy recognized the need for the covert reconnaissance of landing beaches and coastal defenses.. As a result, the Amphibious Scout and Raider School was established in 1942 at Fort Pierce, Florida.. Scouts and Raiders were formed in September of that year, just nin months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, from the Observer Group, a joint U.S. Army-Marine-Navy Units...

Trading stamps first became popular in the United States. Sperry & Hutchinson began offering stamps to United States retailers in 1896.. They bought stamps from S&H and gave them as bonuses with every purchase based on the amount purchased. The stamps were given away at filling stations, corner shops and supermarkets. When the customer had collected sufficient stamps in collectors' books, the shopper claimed merchandise from a catalogue or S&H Green Stamps shop..Tesco founder Jack Cohen was an advocate of stamps; he signed up in 1963, shortly after his competitor Fine Fare adopted S&H Pink Stamps, and T-Esco became 1 of the company’s largest clients. Neot Semadar is located in the southern Negev about 70 km. north of Eilat. The kibbutz was established in 1989, on the grounds of an abandoned kibbutz, Shizafon..In Biblical times, the Arava was a center of copper production; King Solomon is believed to have had mines here. The Arabah was home to the Edomites (Edom was called "Idumea" in Roman times). East of the Arabah was the domain of the Nabateans, the builders of the city of Petra..Kibbutz Yotvata founded in 1957, was named for an ancient town in the area mentioned in the Bible. Samson (Hebrew: שִׁמְשׁוֹן, Modern Shimshon Tiberian Šimšôn, meaning "man of the sun"),Shamshoun ( شمشون‎ Shamshūn/Šamšūn), or Sampson ( Σαμψών), is one of the last of the Judges of the ancient Israelites mentioned in the Hebrew Bible (Book of Judges chapters 13 to 16)..According to the biblical account, Samson was given supernatural strength by God in order to combat his enemies and perform heroic feats such as killing a lion, slaying an entire army with only the jawbone of an ass, and destroying a pagan temple. Samson had two vulnerabilities, however: his attraction to untrustworthy women and his hair, without which he was powerless.. These vulnerabilities ultimately proved fatal for him..And Samson went to Gaza... And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the brook/valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. The Island, the 5th largest in the Falklands archipelago, stretches about 30 km (19 mi) and about 7 km (4.3 mi) at its widest point, with a total area of 103.36 km2 (39.91 sq mi). Its 3 high points are First Mountain 277 m (909 ft), Middle Mountain 214 m (702 ft) and Marble Mountain 237 m (778 ft), all of which lie in the western part of the island.. The Eastern part of the island has lakes and wetlands and is of high conservation value.. The 2 halves are joined by an isthmus on which lies Pebble Island Settlement where the inhabitants live. The island has been a sheep farm since 1846; 13,500 Corriedale sheep are farmed, along with 240 head of beef and dairy cattle...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNHq9ldidgE

In the year 1843 the Chilean government sent an X-pedition with the appointed task of establishing a permanent settlement on the shores of the Strait of Madellan. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while the indigenous Mapuche inhabited central and southern Chile declared its independence from Spain on February 12, 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879–83), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its current northern territory. It was not until the 1880s that the Mapuche were completely subjugated. Although relatively free of the coups and arbitrary Govs that blighted South America, Chile endured the 17-year long military dictatorship (1973–1990) of Augusto Pinochet that left more than 3,000 people dead or missing..Since the Falklands War, when transport ties were severed between the Falkland Islands and continental Argentina, Punta Arenas has become a major outside link to the Arch-Ipelago..Taken - Abducidos Cap 01 sub español "Beyond the Sky - YouTube

The Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife is a double-edged fighting knife resembling a dagger or poignard with a foil grip developed by William Ewart Fairbairn and Eric Anthony Sykes in Shanghai based on concepts which the two men initiated before World War II while serving on the Shanghai Municipal Police in China..The F–S fighting knife was made famous during World War II when issued to British Commandos, the Airborne Forces, the SAS and many other units, especially for the Normandy Landings in June 1944. With its acutely tapered, sharply-pointed blade, the F–S fighting knife is frequently described as a stiletto, a weapon optimized for thrusting,. although the F-S knife is capable of being used to inflict slash cuts upon an opponent when its cutting edges are sharpened according to specification.. The Wilkinson Sword Company made the knife with minor pommel and grip design variations..The F-S knife is strongly associated with the British commandos and the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and Marine Raiders (who based their issued knife on the Fairbairn-Sykes), among other special forces / clandestine / raiding units.. It features in the insignia of the British Royal Marines, the Belgian Commandos, the Dutch Commando Corps, founded in the UK during World War II, the Australian 1st Commando Regiment and 2nd Commando Regiment, and the United States Army Rangers, both founded with the help of the British Commandos. A solid gold F–S fighting knife is part of the commandos' memorial at Westminster Abbey...

In close-quarters fighting there is no more deadly weapon than the knife. In choosing a knife there are 2 important factors to bear in mind: balance and keenness.. The hilt should fit easily in your hand, and the blade should not be so heavy that it tends to drag the hilt from your fingers in a loose grip. It is essential that the blade have a sharp stabbing point and good cutting edges, because an artery torn through (as against a clean cut) tends to contract and stop the bleeding. If a main artery is cleanly severed, the wounded man will quickly lose consciousness and die..The M9 Bayonet is a multi-purpose knife and bayonet officially adopted in 1986 by the US..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7UEddgJxrE

These Ordensburgen were built at Sonthofen in the Allgäu (Bavaria), Crössinsee in Pomerania, and Vogelsang in the Eifel )..The Vogelsang Ordensburg was designed by architect Clemens Klotz, built on a hillside overlooking a large lake valley. The school was completed in 1936 and the first class of "Junker" (cadets) began training immediately.. http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...5&postcount=26It is rotten and dismal that a world of so many hundred million people should be ruled by a single caste that has the power to lead millions to life or to death, indeed on a whim...This caste has spun its web over the entire earth; capitalism recognizes no national boundaries...Capitalism has learned nothing from recent events and wants to learn nothing, because it places its own interests ahead of those of the other millions. Can one blame those millions for standing up for their own interests, and only for those interests? Can one blame them for striving to forge an international community whose purpose is the struggle against corrupt capitalism? Can one condemn a large segment of the educated Sturmer youth for protesting against the greatest ability? Is it not an abomination that people with the most brilliant intellectual gifts should sink into poverty and disintegrate, while others dissipate, squander, and waste the money that could help them? ... You say the old propertied class also worked hard for what it has. Granted, that may be true in many cases. But do you also know about the conditions under which workers were living during the period when capitalism “earned” its fortune...http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...3&postcount=37

The Deal barracks bombing was an attack by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) on a Royal Marines barracks in Deal, England.. It took place at 8:27 am on 22 September 1989, when the IRA exploded a time bomb at the Royal Marines School of Music building.. The building collapsed, killing 11 marines from the Royal Marines Band Service and wounding another 21..The Royal Marines School of Music is a professional training centre for musicians of the Royal Marines Band Service, the musical army of the Royal Navy. It takes students at school-leavers age of 16 and trains them for 32 months to become both professional musicians and battlefield medics..Some marines had remained behind in the building, and thus received the full force of the explosion. Many were trapped in the rubble for hours and military heavy lifting equipment was needed to clear much of it. Kent Ambulance Service voluntarily agreed to end its industrial strike action to aid those wounded by the blast..10 Marines died at the scene with most trapped in the collapsed building, although one body was later found on the roof of a nearby house..Another 21 were seriously injured and received treatment at hospitals in Deal and Canterbury. One of these men, 21-year-old Christopher Nolan, died of his wounds on 18 October 1989..3 of those killed were buried nearby at the Hamilton Road Cemetery, Deal..The base's security caused controversy as this was partly provided by a private security firm.. This arrangement prompted a thorough review of security procedures at all British military bases and the replacement of the firm's employees at Deal with Royal Marine Guards..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsxAXAzHg-A

The Hyde Park Barracks are located in Knightsbridge in central London, on the southern edge of Hyde Park. Historically they were often known as Knightsbridge Barracks and this name is still sometimes used informally. Hyde Park Barracks is three quarters of a mile from Buckingham Palace, close enough for the officers and men of the Household Cavalry to be available to respond speedily to any emergency at the Palace and also to conduct their ceremonial duties..It was built to accommodate 23 officers, 60 warrant officers and non-commissioned officers, 431 rank and file, and 273 horses..The most prominent feature is a 33 storey, 94-metre (308 ft) tall residential tower, which is one of the two most prominent modern buildings as seen from Hyde Park along with The London Hilton on Park Lane..It has been described by the magazine, Country Life, as "dramatically modern and uncompromising", but many people have viewed it less favourably; it was voted number 8 in a Country Life poll of Britain's "top 10 eyesores".. Lord St John of Fawsley remarked that "Basil Spence's barracks in Hyde Park ruined that park; in fact, he has the distinction of having ruined 2 parks, because of his Home Office building, which towers above St. James's Park"..

Maybe some other members of the Old & Bold can already answer this question, but during my time with RMP I often wondered why we were called 'Monkeys' by other service personnel.. I have heard all sorts of answers and the only reasonable one up to now has been that of the infamous Hartlepool monkey hanging during the Napoleonic Wars..No one has ever been arrested or convicted in connection with the Deal bombing...

The Hyde Park Barracks is a brick building and compound designed by convict architect Francis Greenway between 1818–19; originally built at the head of Macquarie Street (1819) to house convict men and boys..Constructed by convict labour by order of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, the Barracks is one of the most familiar works of the accomplished colonial England-born, Australian architect Francis Greenway. As the principal male convict barracks in New South Wales it provided lodgings for convicts working in government employment around Sydney until its closure in mid-1848..It has had many occupants since then. It was an Immigration Depot for single female immigrants seeking work as domestic servants and awaiting family reunion from 1848 to 1886 and also a female asylum from 1862 to 1886...The macaques ) constitute a genus (Macaca) of Old World monkeys of the subfamily Cercopithecinae...

The first home of the Royal Marines in Kent was established at Chatham in 1755. Because of its proximity to the continent and the fact that it possessed a thriving naval dockyard, Deal has been closely associated with the corps ever since its foundation. Records from the old Navy yard at Deal exist from 1658 and show that Marines from Chatham and Woolwich were on duty in Deal, and quartered in the town, until the Deal depot was established in 1861..Deal Barracks has become known over its long history as the Royal Marine School of Music, the barracks at Walmer consisting of the North, East and South (or Cavalry) barracks, and all were constructed shortly after the outbreak of the French revolution..Part of the South barracks was used from 1815 as the quarters for the 'blockade men', drafted against a threat of local smuggling. The South barracks became a coastguard station thereafter, and this duty continued until 1840..

It was the East barracks which accommodated the School of Music, until the Royal Naval School of Music was formed at Plymouth in 1903, but which moved to Deal in 1930, replacing the original depot band formed in 1891. Thus the institution became known as the Royal Marine School of Music in 1950..During 1940, at St. Margaret's Bay, close to Deal, the Royal Marines Siege Regiment came into being and manned cross-channel guns for most of the remainder of the war..On 29 October, a Home Security Report detailed in the RAF's Campaign Diary was made:"Army Stations 29thU October 1940 Deal: At 1640 hours 3 HE bombs were dropped in the barracks, the casualties being 1 Officer and 7 other ranks killed, 6 Officers and 6 other ranks wounded."These casualties are buried in the Hamilton Road Cemetery, Deal, Kent..In 2005, the Old Gymnasium (in the Barracks) was renovated and it won the Building Renovation category in the Kent Design Awards..On the evening of 26 March 1996, the Deal populace were privy to a special ceremony, the Beating Retreat, coming from the South barracks, as the Royal Marines Band Service were commanded to vacate their ancient Kent depot and move to new quarters at Portsmouth. The Marines every year come up to the bandstand and put on a display which attracts over 10,000 people...

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual series of Military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and International military bands and display teams on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.. The event takes place annually throughout August, as part of the wider Edinburgh Festival (a collective name for many independent festivals and events held in Edinburgh during August)..The word "Tattoo," is derived from "Doe den tap toe", or just "tap toe" ("toe" is pronounced "too"), the Dutch for "Last orders". Translated literally, it means: "close the (beer) tap". The term "Tap-toe" was first encountered by the British Army when stationed in Flanders during the War of the Austrian Succession..The Tattoo is run for charitable causes and over the years has given over £5 million to military and civilian charities and organisations, such as the Army Benevolent Fund.. However, the greater benefit has been that it, by independent count, generates an additional £88 million in revenue for Edinburgh's economy annually..The official magazine of the Edinburgh Military tattoo is called Salute and is distributed free to sponsors, Friends of the Tattoo, and visiting performers..The Princess Royal is the current Patron of the event, with the main corporate sponsor being the Royal Bank of Scotland..In 2010 the event became the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo after HM Queen Elizabeth awarded the Royal title in celebration of its six decades of existence..International military regiments and even African tribes have performed at the Tattoo over the years. The first regiment from outside the UK to take part was the Band of the Royal Netherlands Grenadiers in 1952. So far, over 30 countries from nearly all continents have been represented at the Tattoo. Popular visiting performers include the Swiss Top Secret Drum Corps, who performed at the 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012 Tattoos and were the first non-military drum corps to participate. The Band and Drill team of His Majesty The King's Guard of the Norwegian Army has also performed at the Tattoo on eight previous occasions since 1961, adopting Nils Olav, a penguin at Edinburgh Zoo, as their regimental mascot in 1972. In recent years, performances have included cultural dances and items from different countries..Each year has a 'lead' service from the British Armed Forces, alternating between the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, the British Army and the Royal Air Force...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kdl5TaZhU2s

Map outlining the British recapture of the islands...

May 24, 1982-A transit of Earth across the Sun as seen from Uranus takes place when the planet Earth passes directly between the Sun and Uranus, obscuring a small part of the Sun's disc for an observer on Uranus. During a transit, Earth can be seen from Uranus as a small black disc moving across the face of the Sun..Transits of Earth from Uranus occur in clusters, with 2 such clusters every 40 years or so..On 4 May, 2 days after the sinking of Belgrano, the British lost the Type 42 destroyer HMS Sheffield to fire following an Exocet missile strike from the Argentine 2nd Naval Air Fighter/Attack Squadron. Sheffield had been ordered forward with 2 other Type 42s to provide a long-range radar and medium-high altitude missile picket far from the British carriers. She was struck amidships, with devastating effect, ultimately killing 20 crew members and severely injuring 24 others.. The ship was abandoned several hours later, gutted and deformed by the fires that continued to burn for 6 more days. She finally sank outside the Maritime Exclusion Zone on 10 May..Taurus (♉) is the 2nd astrological sign in the Zodiac.. It spans the 30-60th degree of the zodiac, between 27.25 and 54.75 degree of celestial Long-itude.. Under the tropic zodiac, the Sun transits this area on average between April 20 and May 20 each year...

The Summer Triangle is an astronomical asterism involving an imaginary triangle drawn on the northern hemisphere's celestial sphere, with its defining vertices at Altair, Deneb, and Vega, the brightest stars in the three constellations of Aquila, Cygnus, and Lyra, respectively..Near midnight the Summer Triangle lies virtually overhead at mid-northern latitudes during the summer months, but can also be seen during spring in the early morning to the East. In the autumn the summer triangle is visible in the evening to the West well until November. From the southern hemisphere it appears upside down and low in the sky during the winter months..There is no controversy about the effect of a syzygy on ocean tides. The syzygy produces the more powerful spring tide due to the enhanced gravitational effect of the Sun added to the Moon's gravitational pull. The spring tides (highest tides) occur at full moon and new moon times while the neap tides (lowest tides) occur when the sun and moon are at right angles in the first and third quarters of the moon's cycle. Spring and neap tides are about 20% higher and lower, respectively, than normal tides..The gravitational effects of syzygies on planets, especially Earth, are still being studied. It is known that the gravitational stress on the Moon during a Sun–Earth–Moon syzygy can trigger a moonquake, a seismic event on the Moon similar in some ways to an EarthQuake...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXOhw1ELZK8

Altair (Alpha Aquilae, Alpha Aql, α Aquilae, α Aql, Atair) is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila and the 12th brightest star in the night sky. It is currently in the G-cloud..Altair is an A-type main sequence star with an apparent visual magnitude of 0.77 and is one of the vertices of the Summer Triangle (the other 2 vertices are marked by Deneb and Vega)..The Atair Insect is a powered paraglider in the mode of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) by Atair Aerospace Inc..The company showcased its LEAPP technology in 2006 at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition..The Atair Insect uses a parafoil for its kited wing, an evolution of Domina Jalbert's invention. LEAPP is a trademark for "Long Endurance Autonomous Powered Paraglider"..The Atair Insect is a Type II LEAPP UAV within Atair Aerospace's designation scheme. LEAPP (Type I) and LEAPP (Type III) are associated powered paraglider products..An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone and referred to as a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. Its flight is controlled either autonomously by onboard computers or by the remote control of a pilot on the ground or in another vehicle. The typical launch and recovery method of an unmanned aircraft is by the function of an automatic system or an external operator on the ground.. Historically, UAVs were simple remotely piloted aircraft, but autonomous control is increasingly being employed..The concept of drones dates back to the mid-1800s, when Austrians sent off unmanned, bomb-filled balloons as a way to attack Venice. The drone we see today started innovation in the early 1900s, and was originally used for target practice to train military personnel. It continued to be developed during World War I, when the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company came up with the a pilotless aerial torpedo that would drop and explode at a particular, preset time..There are 2 prominent UAV programs within the United States: that of the military and that of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).. The military’s UAV program is overt, meaning that the public recognizes which government operates it and, therefore, it only operates where US troops are stationed. The CIA’s program is clandestine. Missions performed by the CIA’s UAV program do not always occur where US troops are stationed...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XsI8CkwU64

Leyland is a town in the South Ribble district, in the county of Lancashire, England. It is approximately 6 miles (10 km) south of the city of Preston..Throughout the 20th and 21st century, the community has seen a large growth in industry, population and farming, due to the establishment of Leyland Motors, housing developments and the surrounding usable arable land..The name of the town is of old Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning "untilled land"..Before the control of the English Leyland was an area of fields, with Roman roads passing through, from ancient Wigan to Walton-le-Dale..Most of the housing in Leyland falls under the semi-detached, detached and bungalow categories. There are a few modern housing estates, but about 65% of the accommodation in the town were built in the 1970s..Leyland is made up by 6 different areas, the town centre itself counts as the main retail side, with the railway station, library and shops nearby. The other areas include Broadfield, Moss Side, Worden Park, Turpin Green and the Wade Hall estate...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violin

Arrow RMSniper

Quote:
A sniper is a highly trained marksman who operates alone, in a pair, or with a sniper team to maintain close visual contact with the enemy and engage targets from concealed positions or distances exceeding the detection capabilities of enemy personnel.. These sniper teams operate independently, with little combat asset support from their parent units.. Snipers typically have highly selective and specialized training and use high-precision/special application rifles and optics, and often have sophisticated communication assets to feed valuable combat information back to their units..The verb "to snipe" originated in the 1770s among soldiers in British India where a hunter skilled enough to kill the elusive snipe was dubbed a "sniper".. The term sniper was first attested in 1824 in the sense of the word "sharpshooter"..Another term, "sharp shooter" was in use in British newspapers as early as 1801. In the Edinburgh Advertiser, 23 June 1801, can be found the following quote in a piece about the North British Militia; "This Regiment has several Field Pieces, and two companies of Sharp Shooters, which are very necessary in the modern Stile of War". The term appears even earlier, around 1781, in Continental Europe..Before the development of rifling, firearms were smoothbore and inaccurate over long distance. Barrel rifling was invented at the end of the 15th century, but was only employed in large cannons..One of the best known battles involving snipers, and the battle that made the Germans reinstate their specialized sniper training, was the Battle of Stalingrad..

HMS Siren (most often referred to as Syren in contemporary records) was a sixth-rate post ship of the British Royal Navy, in commission between 1745 and 1763, seeing action during the War of the Austrian Succession and the Se7en Years' War..Siren was built at Limehouse by Thomas Snelgrove[2] at a cost of £4,606.10.0d, and completed fitting out at Deptford Dockyard on 16 November 1745 at a cost of £3,721.15.11d.. Lightbulb HMS Siren 1773

HMS Siren (or Syren) was a 28-gun Enterprise-class sixth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy. Siren was first commissioned in August 1775 under the command of Captain Tobias Furneaux, her only commanding officer..She took part in the Battle of the Rice Boats on 2-3 March 1776 on the border between the Province of Georgia and the Province of South Carolina and in the Battle of Sullivan's Island of 28 June 1776 upon Charleston, South Carolina..Siren, escorting a convoy in poor visibility, ran aground at about 6:00 am on 6 November 1777 near Point Judith, along with two other ships.. Efforts were made to bring her off, but American forces ashore brought up field artillery and prevented salvage operations.. Siren was abandoned with the loss of 2 killed and 5 wounded..Point Judith is a village and a small cape, on the coast of Narragansett, Rhode Island, on the western side of Narragansett Bay where it opens out onto Rhode Island Sound. It is the location for the principal year-round ferry service that connects Block Island to the mainland and contains the fishing hamlet of Galilee, Rhode Island...

Lightbulb HMS Intrepid 1770

Quote:
HMS Intrepid was a 64-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 4 December 1770 at Woolwich..In 1772 the Intrepid sailed to the Dutch East Indies. The ship's master on this journey was John Hunter, later an admiral and the second Governor of New South Wales..She took part in the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781..In February 1796, Intrepid was patrolling near Cap-François looking for reinforcements expected from Cork when she encountered a French corvette. After a chase of 10 hours, the frigate ran ashore in a cove to the east of Porto Plata, where her crew abandoned her, enabling the British to retrieve her. She turned out to be the Perçante, armed with twenty 9-pounder guns and six brass 2-pounders, with a crew of 200 men under the command of Citoyen Jacque Clement Tourtellet. She had left La Rochelle on 6 December 1795 under orders from the Minister of Marine and Colonies not to communicate with any vessel on the way.. The British took her into service as the sixth-rate HMS Jamaica. Musquito must have been in company or in sight as she shared in the proceeds of the capture..Cap-Haïtien (Okap or Kapayisyen in Kréyòl) is a city of about 190,000 people on the north coast of Haiti and capital of the Department of Nord..The small Hugo Chavez International Airport (formerly Cap-Haïtien International Airport), located on the southeast edge of the city, is served by several small domestic airlines and has been patrolled by Chilean UN troops from the "O'Higgins Base" since the 2010 EQ...

Lightbulb The Siren

Quote:
The Siren is a painting by John William Waterhouse.. The painting depicts a siren sitting at the edge of a cliff, lyre in hand and staring down at a shipwrecked sailor floating in water, who in turn is staring up at her..According to the William Waterhouse's website, this picture was painted in 1900 and is now in a private collection. The estimated sale price for the painting in 2003 was one million pounds.."The Siren He listened in thrall to the song of the siren, Her voice like a star as it flew through the air. He drowned in her eyes as she called him to follow, And likened the sun to the gold of her hair..She swept up her arms and held him close to her, Her soft lips caressing the lines on his brow. He could not resist her, a magic had trapped him, And nothing could save him, for she had him now..She pulled him down with her into the clear water, He gasped as death started the grip on his soul. His life ebbed away as she dragged him still further, And laughed when she saw she'd accomplished her goal.." - Charlotte Lester...
