The City of London Cemetery and Crematorium is a cemetery and crematorium in the north east of London. It is the largest such municipal facility in the UK and probably in Europe..The first interment was on 24 June 1856, although the cemetery was not consecrated until November 1857, due to legal difficulties (which were solved in the Burial Act 1857).. It is estimated that in 1858 around 2,700 interments took place.. There are 727 Commonwealth service personnel of both World Wars commemorated at the cemetery, many buried in a War Graves plot, which has a Cross of Sacrifice and a Screen Wall memorial that lists casualties who are buried in the plot or elsewhere in the cemetery without headstones, besides those cremated at the City of London Crematorium. Many of the soldiers died at the Bethnal Green Military Hospital...

From Hell Soundtrack - A Sprig of Red Grapes..

The Hughes brothers spent a great deal of time and effort towards recreating Whitechapel and the various murder scenes.. The work certainly paid off, as From Hell can certainly claim to have the most authentic sets ever designed for a Ripper movie.. From the recreation of Christ Church, to the Ten Bells to the depiction of everyday life in Whitechapel, most everything was spot-on. One scene in particular was hauntingly accurate, where Mary and several fellow Whitechaplians are asleep, held up by a single rope threaded beneath their arms.. Doss-houses in Whitechapel were often so overcrowded that there really was no room for beds - the poor would pay a slight fee for the privilege of sleeping leaning over a common rope..The murder scenes were generally quite accurate, apart from Mary Kelly's room which was a bit larger and had the bed facing the wrong wall.. Apart from such trifles, however, the scenery as a whole was very true-to-life..

Although hundreds of letters were indeed sent to the press and police claiming to be from Jack the Ripper, historians today believe that few if any of them actually came from the killer.. One in particular that may have been real is the "From Hell" letter, which enclosed a piece of human kidney.. In the film, Abberline is given this letter and kidney before the double murders of Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes - but its Eddowes' kidney that the killer is allegedly sending through the post! So unless live-kidney-extraction was a particularly-enjoyed pastime of poor Kate's, the timing was a bit off in the film...

It was suggested that the killer would need more than "one type of knife" to carry out his murders.. This is not historically accurate, and is probably derived from a surgeon's report on the body of Martha Tabram.. He reported that all but one of her stab wounds could have been made with a small knife like a pen-knife, though one could only have been made with a longer one like a bayonet.. No other victims showed any evidence of two different knives being used upon them..

In the aftermath of the murder of Elizabeth Stride, which took place in a dark yard off Berner Street on 30th September 1888, a dubious character named Matthew Packer came forward to claim that he had sold grapes to Elizabeth Stride and a mystery man shortly before her body was discovered a short distance away from his shop, which was located at 44 Berner Street..

In 1888, Berner Street contained a variety of buildings, most notably a row of houses on the east side, broken by Sander Street and Dutfield's Yard which divided Nos.40 and 42. No.40 was the International Working Men's Educational Club, a wooden building that was very old, even by 1888..The Berner Street/Dutfield's Yard area was the first murder site to be redeveloped, being demolished in 1909 to make way for a new school which is today the Harry Gosling Primary School.. Stride's murder site is now part of the playground.. The original 1871 board school opposite was replaced by the Bernhard Baron settlement, a centre for Jewish boys set up by local benefactor Basil Henriques..

On the belief that the Ripper must not have begun his "career" with a full-fledged mutilation-murder, or even a murder at all, it has been put forth that Ada Wilson, a sempstress living at 19 Maidman Street, Mile End, might have been a victim of one of the Ripper's early attacks..On March 28, 1888, while home alone at 19 Maidman Street, Wilson answered a knock at the door to find a man of about 30 years of age, 5ft 6ins in height, with a sunburnt face and a fair moustache.. He was wearing a dark coat, light trousers and a wideawake hat.. The man forced his way into the room and demanded money, and when she refused he stabbed her twice in the throat and ran, leaving her for dead. It is reported that nearby neighbours almost captured the man, but he found his escape..Luckily for her, Ada Wilson survived the attack and lived to relate the story to the authorities.

There are 4 main reasons why this murder could be attributed to the Ripper.. First is the description of the attacker, which fits many witness accounts of the Ripper.. Next is the use of a knife as a weapon, as well as the throat being the target of his fury.. Finally, the term "seamstress", as Mrs. Wilson described herself, was a common term used by prostitutes for matters of self-description..Of course, the fact that money was demanded and robbery seems the motive weighs heavily on this theory, as the Ripper is not known primarily as a robbery-motivated murderer..Still, the description of the man as well as his relative MO works well with behaviorists who claim the Ripper must have begun his atrocities on a small scale before "graduating" up to full-fledged mutilation.. British Newspapers Make Things Up..I knew this from my own experiences of dealing with British journalists, but, as it turns out, even the British government admits, in an "official government publication", that British newspapers make things up and report them as facts..

It used to be said there were 2 kinds of chairs to go with 2 kinds of Minister: one sort folds up instantly; the other sort goes round and round in circles..Ministers should never know more than they need to know..It takes 2 to quango, Minister!..

One thing I notice is that high-end newspapers seem to have good information, but they don’t make an effort to convince people that it matters to them.. Meanwhile, horrible sensationalist newspapers offer nothing but scandals and lies, but they effectively brainwash you into thinking that not only are their stories true, but that they matter to you..TV news is also guilty of brainwashing the masses, and I don’t just mean in America. Wherever you are, TV news is out to interpret world events for you and tell you what to think, or at least in the vast majority of cases.. The said thing is that many working-middle people, especially in the UK (or more or less little towns and rural UK), will be surrounded by such media and be conditioned to believe whatever crap it espouses...

Valentin Alkan ( 30 November 1813 – 29 March 1888) was a French-Jewish composer and virtuoso pianist..At the height of his fame in the 1830s and 1840s he was, alongside his friends and colleagues Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, among the leading pianists in Paris, a city in which he spent virtually his entire life..Alkan earned many awards at the Conservatoire de Paris, which he entered before he was six..Alkan Morhange was descended from a long-established Jewish Ashkenazic community in the region of Metz..Throughout the early years of the July Monarchy, Alkan continued to teach and play at public concerts and in eminent social circles..

For many years it was believed that Alkan met his death when a bookcase toppled over and fell on him as he reached for a volume of the Talmud from a high shelf.. This tale, which was circulated by the pianist Isidor Philipp, is dismissed by Hugh Macdonald, who reports the discovery of a contemporary letter by one of his pupils explaining that Alkan had been found prostrate in his kitchen, under a porte-parapluie (a heavy coat/umbrella rack), after his concierge heard his moaning.. He had possibly fainted, bringing it down on himself while grabbing out for support.. He was reportedly carried to his bedroom and died later that evening.. The story of the bookcase may have its roots in a legend told of Aryeh Leib ben Asher, rabbi of Metz, the town from which Alkan's family originated..The Balkan Peninsula, or the Balkans, is a peninsula and a cultural area in Southeast Europe with different and disputed borders...
