My list's the same as yours but it's got another M on it.
Or should that be a C?

But seriously, did you compile that or find it?
You post such good stuff that I just don't get time to read through

Great list.

Rosehips too are good (maybe a fruit more than a herb though)

Rosehips are a good source of Vitamin C (hence Rosehip syrup for babies)
and was used during the war when fruit was in short supply.

From what I read though : need to remove the hairs from inside the hip BEFORE using though otherwise (and this is exactly what I read - no kidding) it will give you`itchy bottom` (honest -thats what it said)

Other than that you can make rosehip jam, rosehip syrup, rosehip jelly & other
recipes found online.

Totally agree with you there as I made some back in the autumn, I have a spoonful every day.

I used all of the hip after mincing through a processor and I can confirm the absence of an itchy bum

I actually did this face -- -- when I read your list there.

I'll pretend you also listed it as a 'mental stimulant'. Cheers!!!

Ditto - thanks so much for that! Ive copied and saved it.

Its astounding how mother nature provides prevention and cure for human ailments, something we have lost over the years. Most diseases are man-made, and the big pharma companies provide the solution, or not, at huge cost to the public, when the earth provides the cure for free.

People used to have all this knowledge of herbs, spices and plants, but it was driven out, burning women who had this knowledge as witches etc when they were natural herbalists and curers and carers. About time we brought this knowledge back. Thanks again!

Don't let those bastards at Codex see this list, in case there's anything on it they've left out.

Oh no, that won't make any difference, with the Codex implementation of Napoleonic Law, where everything is banned unless they say otherwise. They'll use the list instead to make sure nothing on it is on the Codex list of permitted herbs.

Great list (apart from echinacea is not a natural antibiotic, it's an immunostimulant, it's different, but I'm just nitpicking).

I'll sticky in the health forum; it's a very thorough job.

My mum once told me how she, as a child, would pick certain flowers and plants to give to the pharmacist in exchange for money. This was in the 60's, fast forward 40 years and all herbal knowledge is practically gone in favour of the Big, Big Pills.

Pharma was good before it turned BIG.

How to Make a Poultice

To make one of the following poultices, cut a piece of clean cloth (white cotton, cheesecloth, or unbleached muslin) twice the size of the area you plan on covering. Spread the ingredient on the cloth and fold. Apply the poultice to the affected body part and gently secure it in place with another piece of cloth or an elastic bandage.

A poultice is more effective if it is moist. When it dries out, you should replace it, using fresh ingredients and a new cloth. Applying a hot water bottle or hot compress over the poultice can help keep it moist and warm.

How to make a poultice for common problems:

Blackstrap Molasses

A blackstrap molasses poultice can be applied to a wart. Keep it on until it dries out or becomes dirty then replace it. In about 2 weeks, the wart should be gone.

Carrot (and Honey)

For a sore throat, prepare a carrot poultice using a large (raw), grated carrot and apply it around your throat.

For weeping sores, make a poultice using a raw, grated carrot or you can cook the carrot and mash it. This will help draw out the infection and stop throbbing pain.

A honey poultice is also effective in disinfecting weeping wounds. Use raw, unprocessed honey.

Chamomile

A chamomile poultice can ease the pain of an earache when placed over the ear. Pour a little hot water over some dried chamomile flowers to soften it before applying it to the cloth.

Comfrey

Soften some dried comfrey root or leaves with hot water. A comfrey poultice can help relieve pain and speed up the healing process of sprains, strains, and pulled tendons and ligaments.

Horseradish (and Onion)

For a toothache, grate some horseradish root to make a poultice and place it behind the ear closest to your aching tooth. You can also apply grated horseradish on the gum next to your aching tooth.

For a sinus headache, apply a poultice made of horseradish to the nape of your neck and to the soles of your feet for one hour. Instead of horseradish, you can use a raw grated onion.

It is said an onion poultice can help eliminate nervous anxiety when applied to both calves for a half an hour.

Kosher Salt

To relieve arthritis pain, heat some kosher salt in a frying pan to make a poultice and apply it over the affected area.

Potato (Apple, Papaya, and Beets)

For blood shot eyes, peel and grate a potato (preferably a red potato) to make a poultice and apply it to closed eyelids for 20 minutes.

For eye inflammation (including pinkeye), apply a poultice made of grated raw potato, mashed cooked beets, or mashed papaya pulp to closed eyelids for 15 minutes 2 times a day.

For a headache, apply a potato poultice to your forehead for at least an hour. A poultice made of grated apple can also help.

Sauerkraut

Make a poultice using raw sauerkraut to help soothe and heal a first degree burn.

Default Honey More Effective Than Antibiotics

http://www.aphroditewomenshealth.com...lth_news.shtml

Doctors in Europe are finding that honey helps the treatment of some wounds better than modern antibiotics. Ongoing tests at the University of Bonn have been recording high levels of effectiveness with what is known as "medihoney". The researchers say that even chronic wounds infected with multi-resistant bacteria - usually a problem for all but the newest antibiotics - can often be healed within a few weeks using honey.

The curative properties of honey have long been recognized, beginning with the Egyptians thousands of years ago, and more recently in the last two world wars, where poultices with honey were used to assist the healing process in soldiers' wounds. More recently however, this valuable household remedy seems to have been forgotten, in favor of more modern antibiotics. But antibiotic resistance could see a resurgence in the medical use of honey. "In hospitals today we are faced with germs which are resistant to almost all the current anti-biotics," Dr. Arne Simon explained. "As a result, the medical use of honey is becoming attractive again for the treatment of wounds."

Dr. Simon works in the cancer ward of the Bonn University Children's Clinic, where young patients are treated with drugs (known as cytostatics) that not only slow down the reproduction of cancer cells, but also impair the healing process of wounds. "Normally a skin injury heals in a week, with our children it often takes a month or more," he said. "Moreover, children with leukemia have a weakened immune system. If a germ enters their bloodstream via a wound, the result may be a fatal case of blood poisoning."

To counter this threat to their patients, Dr. Simon and other Bonn pediatricians have been pioneering the use of medihoney in treating wounds and their success is astonishing. "Dead tissue is rejected faster, and the wounds heal more rapidly," said Kai Sofka, a wound specialist at the University Children's Clinic. "What is more, changing dressings is less painful, since the poultices are easier to remove without damaging the newly formed layers of skin. Even wounds which consistently refused to heal for years can, in our experience, be brought under control with medihoney - and this frequently happens within a few weeks," Sofka added.

Medihoney can even put paid to multi-resistant germs such as MRSA, and in this respect, say the researchers, medihoney is comparable to the antibiotic mupirocin, currently the MRSA antibiotic of choice. In fact, research from Australia showed that medihoney was even superior to its pharmaceutical rival, as the bacteria did not develop any resistance to the natural product during the course of treatment.

Why does honey have this antiseptic effect? It seems that when producing honey, bees add an enzyme called glucose-oxidase, which creates small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, an effective antiseptic, in the sugar of the honey. Medihoney comes in two different flavors: one which forms a comparatively large amount of hydrogen peroxide, and another known as "lepto-spermum honey". Leptospermum is a species of tree which occurs in New Zealand and Australia and honey from these trees has a particularly strong anti-bacterial effect. "It is not yet known exactly why this is," Dr. Simon pondered. "Probably it is a mix of phenol-type substances which come from the plant and make life particularly difficult for the bacteria in the wound."
