Default "In Our Dream..."

"In our dream, we have limitless resources, and the people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hand. The present educational conventions fade from our minds; and, unhampered by tradition, we work our own good will upon a grateful and responsive folk. We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning or science. We are not to raise up from among them authors, orators, poets, or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians. Nor will we cherish even the humbler ambition to raise up from among them lawyers, doctors, preachers, politicians, statesmen, of whom we now have ample supply."

- Rockefeller Foundation Director of Charity, Frederick Gates, 1913

NEW YORK — An unprecedented study that followed several thousand undergraduates through four years of college found that large numbers didn't learn the critical thinking, complex reasoning and written communication skills that are widely assumed to be at the core of a college education.

Sounds more like a nightmare. Well, unless you are one of those involved with the implementing of this future state.

And when they talk about "their dream", they talk about the dreamworld that they've created. For them, the sleep dream and the 'awake' dream are one and the same. They don't sleep.

Default Great qotation Lizzy

There's a natural mystic blowing through the air;
If you listen carefully now you will hear.
This could be the first trumpet, might as well be the last:
Many more will have to suffer,
Many more will have to die - don't ask me why.

Things are not the way they used to be,
I won't tell no lie;
One and all have to face reality now.
'Though I've tried to find the answer to all the questions they ask.
'Though I know it's impossible to go livin' through the past -
Don't tell no lie.

There's a natural mystic blowing through the air -
Can't keep them down -
If you listen carefully now you will hear.

There's a natural mystic blowing through the air.

This could be the first trumpet, might as well be the last:
Many more will have to suffer,
Many more will have to die - don't ask me why.

There's a natural mystic blowing through the air -
I won't tell no lie;
If you listen carefully now you will hear:
There's a natural mystic blowing through the air.
Such a natural mystic blowing through the air;
There's a natural mystic blowing through the air;
Such a natural mystic blowing through the air;
Such a natural mystic blowing through the air;
Such a natural mystic blowing through the air.

This statement is typical macaronic garbage, hodgepodge. How exactly would the foundation serve not to "cherish even the humbler ambition[s]"? Heuristically, perhaps? Academic philosophy and academic scientific research is - generally, anyway - complete crass. Perhaps creating certain academic pseudo-problems could generate "perfect docility". I mean, the free will and determinism debate still rages on, as well does the Platonic hydra known to us as 'Truth'. In physics, contemporary academics in quantum theory find themselves debating similarly ubiquitous issues. Unfortunately, I am no biology stud, but can guarantee that - if anything - branches such as neuroscience and bio-chemistry have even taken a backseat to nanotechnology (or mechanical technology proper) - hence the idea of people being raised as a sort of mechanical docile capable not of critical evaluation but of machine-like responses. The point that I am making seems to support this Gates' hypothetical imperative, as well as what Lizzyking means to insinuate - definitely one of my favorite posters. Critical thinking has flown the coup within the spheres of American academia. That is not to say that there are not some seriously devout denizens in each community: the number, unfortunately, just seems rather low.
