Default Simplest ET message.

While we are all looking for complex messages from advanced civilisations that are far superior to us, it may be more fruitful to look for the simpler indications.
A complex digital code may be lost in the vastness of space, swallowed up by gas clouds and scattered by gravitation lensing.

However, simpler is better.

A blip, followed by two blips, followed by three, say repeated ten or a hundred times to create a definable pattern which could only have come from someone with the knowledge that they were sending a message out to others.

This can't be naturally occurring, a pulsar won't do that, far too uniform and predictable, interference caused by solar flares and planetary electrical storms would be too random.

Of course the pattern that emerges from the simplest form of interstellar message would be of a triangle, a pyramid.

Agree, the saying ,"it was right in front of my nose too", is true, simple messages could very well be or has been over looked while focusing on the more elaborate and complex messages.
