You have to go on both common sense and past evidence. Not many of these creatures have been found or documented, neither have their footprints, droppings, food remains or anything significant noted. So it might be safe to relegate this to myths or fakery.

I guess seeing is believing when it comes to this kind of creature, yes in an ideal world it would be good to see one for yourself. But the only source of these types of things is a place where manipulation is so easy to do these days and it makes it hard to judge. The only creatures or beasts I've ever seen have been in some form of media, never real life.

Yes, this would be very easy to fake digitally.

The best thing it had (has?) going for it is how similar it looks to the thing caught on video in Spain, but even then a Photoshop artist could have based his creation on that vid anyway.

This has the stench of a hoax about it now for sure.

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__...fb/Mudmann.jpg

I wouldnt be surprised if it was a spoiler for l4d3

does this coincide with other sightings of a swamp monster in louisiana or is this just the title they've given this guy?

Not sure.

On the cryptomundo site it only mentions this:

Quote:
Nearby, relatively speaking, are the reports of the Honey Island Swamp monster, a hairy humanoid or anthropoid cryptid reported from Honey Island Swamp, Louisiana since 1963. To Native Americans, this cryptid is called Letiche. Cajun have named it the Tainted Keitre.
Re: the viral marketing story, there seems to be an information loop between the io9.com site and the Wildgame Innovations Facebook page, since the former suggests it might be viral marketing because it appears on the Facebook page, and the Facebook page merely links back to that story at io9.

Damn internet.

There's still no solid basis to this viral hoax rumour that I can find as of now.

you mean there's no basis to this being a hoax or no basis to it being real?

No real basis for it being a viral marketing campaign yet, because the cryptomundo statement that it 'seems to be one' goes to io9.com, which reports that Movieweb says it is, but Movieweb doesn't have any more info on that than io9.com does, which is just a suggestion that it's connected to the movie Super 8.

And the Facebook page that io9.com and movieweb.com reference where the Wildgame Innovations logo is shown superimposed on the image just links back to the io9.com article!

okay gotcha, well done

hmm! not sure why the Daily Fail keeps insisting on this spiderman connection

Quote:
The hunter said he was lying in wait in the pitch black when a ghoulish spectre filled his sights.
Its eyes glowing in the light of his torch, it leapt from the undergrowth and flashed a look at the camera before vanishing back into the bushes.

Are they related? The 'forest ghoul' bears a resemblance to Spider-Man, whose latest screen outing has just gone into production
The hunter, who has chosen to remain anonymous, was so frightened he said he broke the camera but retrieved the image from its undamaged memory chip.
The picture was taken on a reserve in Berwick near Morgan City, Louisiana.

i don't know what to think of this story....he says he was in the pitch black, but that the creatures eyes were glowing in the light of his torch

why would he break the camera out of fright? i just dont' know about this....

p.s. it doesn't look a thing like spiderman

Yeah, and that version conflicts with the one on cryptomundo, where it says the hunter:

Quote:
found this bizarre image on his deer stand camera.

Yeah, that's the link that goes to io9.com, and then round and round in circles.

Something that doesn't support it being a viral marketing campaign for Super 8 is that the teaser trailer:

'Super 8' Teaser Trailer:

begins with the words:

In 1979, the U.S. Air Force closed a section of Area 51...

...All materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio.

Then we see a train crashing and some creature inside one of the compartments buckling the steel trying to get out, so presumably the film is about aliens on the loose.

Louisiana is nowhere near a direct train route from Nevada to Ohio, so the decision to publish a fake photo of a creature supposedly seen in Louisiana doesn't make much sense if it's going to turn out to be promoting the Super 8 movie.

A version of the image from ghosttheory.com with the settings changed that makes it look pretty fake:
