After Beck¹s funeral, Lord Longford, in the role of a prison visitor, informed the Leicester Mercury he was convinced of Becks innocence. He wrote: ³I last saw Beck about six weeks ago. He seemed to be in fine health and was optimistic. I think the evidence against him was tainted². We are not sure to which evidence against Beck Lord Longford was referring. Chaney suggests it may be the evidence of some or all of the victims of the physical and sexual assaults he was convicted of inflicting on inmates and staff of the home he managed. Here it must be remembered that each of these persons who gave evidence against Beck at his trial now seek - or have already been awarded - substantial sums by way of compensation for the assaults, injuries and traumas which the Jury at Beck¹s trial decided Beck had inflicted on them.

Beck refers to this factor in a letter dated 25th February 1994: ³The insurance company who is responsible for any claim made against the Social Services, has been in contact with a friend in Leicester and said they are unhappy about the claims. Not because they don¹t like paying out, which I¹m sure they don¹t, but because they say the evidence just does not add up, and they believe the claims of some of them are fraudulent².

Regarding the immediate circumstances attending Beck¹s death, Chaney reports (presumably on the basis of evidence he heard given at the inquest) that on the evening of 31st May Beck attended the gymnasium. Three physical training instructors were present: Prison Officers Agnew, Ryan and Wall. Chaney maintains that Beck suffered the classic symptoms of poisoning: aching limbs, faintness and difficulty with breathing symptoms he had complained of to Chaney himself in correspondence. After Beck¹s collapse, the officers repeatedly phoned the prison infirmary but obtaining no response they placed Beck on a stretcher and took him there. Health care POs Williamson and Allen then phoned the health care manager, William Woods, who arrived at 7.55pm, 40 minutes after Becks seizure. After forms were filled in, Beck was conveyed to prison cell H-108. At the time, no doctor was on duty at the prison, but eventually one was contacted at Charteris, seven miles distant. Before the doctor, Dr. Noteboon arrived, prison nurse Phillipa Stillman went to Becks cell at 8.00 pm and seeing him blue in colour, with Wood¹s help, placed him on the floor of the cell. When the doctor arrived it was too late. When nurse Stillman arrived at Becks cell Woods told her: ³There¹s no cause for alarm. He¹s strained his back².

Chaney records inconsistencies between the pathology report and the statements of health care manager Woods. According to Woods, between February 1993 and May 1994 Beck had reported sick only three times for ³minor medical complaints². On a police statement, Woods declared Beck was a fit man for his duration at Whitemoor. Furthermore, on a prison report after Beck¹s death, the full medical history consisted of two lines: ³Heart pain for about six to eight weeks, complaining of back pain and dizziness².

The pathology report of W. J. Blundell, dated 1st June 1994, stated death attributed to ³sudden cardiac arrhythmia, ischaemic heart disease and coronary artery². A reference was made to ³unusual rhythm² of the heart a discovery presumably made while Beck was alive.

Finally, Chaney draws attention to some interesting loose ends. Beck¹s solicitors, Greene DSa, employed their clerk, Ian Henning, in Beck¹s case. Chaney maintains the Leicester police pursued a vendetta against Henning, compiling a dossier on him and arresting him, allegedly for perverting the course of justice in another case, a charge that failed. Henning told the press: ³It happened because I represented Frank Beck to the best of my ability. I dont judge people. I represent them².

The Deputy-Chief Constable of Leicestershire, Anthony Butler, issued a circular to all sub-divisional commanders accusing Henning of acting improperly during interviews and ³hindering investigations². This led to Henning being refused access to clients. The Law Society found in Hennings favour. However, the police response was to maintain their ban on him visiting clients held in custody on the technical grounds that only fully-qualified solicitors, and not their clerks, had right of access. Henning accused the police of harassing him with a view to suppressing incriminating evidence against Janner and he sued them. This action prompted the police to climb down and admit wrongful arrest.

Default With Janner

Education Secretary Michael Gove told 700 UJIA supporters at the charity's annual dinner on Monday: "I'm proud to be a friend of Israel."
Mr Gove was the guest of honour at the London Hilton event, which raised £2.76 million for the charity's work in Israel and the UK.
He told an admiring audience that he had been a socialist in his teens and a journalist in his twenties, but one thing had remained constant in his life. "I was born, will live and die proud to be a Zionist.
"One of the more important lessons is that the best memorials we can give for the Holocaust is a Jewish state for the Jewish people." In a wide-ranging address, he also talked about faith schools, problems in the Middle East and rising antisemitism. He reiterated the pledge that "no Jewish parent should pay extra for school security".
It was "disgusting", he added, that a Jewish student at St Andrews University had been racially abused by a member of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. "We should condemn this vile prejudice wherever we en-counter it."

A former head of the Armed Forces struck a Labour Party peer during a furious row over the Lebanon conflict.
Lord Bramall, 82, hit Lord Janner, a senior member of Britain's Jewish community, after making what witnesses claim were a series of 'anti-Israel' comments.
Peers watched in astonishment as their argument over the Middle East escalated.
Lord Janner, 78, a veteran campaigner for Holocaust victims, was said to feel 'wronged and seriously offended' after the attack at the House of Lords.

JLC Vice-President Lord Janner of Braunstone, QC, reflects on his work alongside Baroness Thatcher. A number of JLC members attended her funeral.

Baroness Margaret Thatcher was a woman who will be remembered in so many ways. For me, Margaret was a great friend. Although we were of different parties, I knew I could turn to her whenever there was an issue unrelated to our parties and important for everyone. As President of the Board of Deputies in 1978-84, I contacted Margaret countless times to update and ask for her support for the Jewish issues, affecting our community. My respect and friendship with Margaret continued to grow after her leadership and into the Lords, once we were both Peers. We often discussed the Jewish community and how although Margaret had been MP for Finchley, she had never been invited to a Friday night dinner. So I was especially honoured to welcome Margaret and Denis – shortly before he became ill – to a traditional Friday night dinner at my home, and it was a wonderful evening. For me, my dear friend Margaret will be remembered for her character, her decisions, her passion and the knowledge that I could speak and debate important issues with a lady, who is one of the most remarkable figures of the last 50 years. I am honoured to have fought with and against Margaret but more importantly, I have been able to call her my friend. I send my deepest sympathy to all of her family, and wish them all a long life.

His model was Lord Greville Janner, a British Jewish leader and a former Labor Party member of Parliament. Working in Janner's office, he helped set up the International Council of Jewish Parliamentarians.

London's Jewish Chronicle in 2003 said of him, "There is, it has to be said, something of the Tony Blair about Alan Senitt."

WASHINGTON, July 11 (JTA) -- The killers who took Alan Senitt's life robbed the Jewish world of a young leader dedicated to Jewish survival and coexistence with others, his friends, colleagues and family said.
Senitt, 27, a rising star in British communal life and Labor Party politics, was stabbed to death in Washington while escorting a young woman friend home before dawn Sunday.

LONDON — Bob Geldof, the rock star given an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II after he spearheaded the massive charity campaign to ease famine in Africa, has been nominated for the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Band Aid founder, who narrowly missed this year's award, was nominated by Greville Janner, a member of Parliament from Britain's opposition Labor Party.

Where is the reference to Greville Janner former Labour MP exposed by BBC Newsnight some years ago only to be dropped immediately afterwards? Why didn't the Director General of the BBC resign then? Why didn't Janner sue?

Paedophile children’s home boss Frank Beck wrote for Social Work Today

Peter Righton was a regular contributor to Social Work Today, the official publication of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), and one article in particular – ‘Sex and the Residential Social Worker’ – reads like an appeal to other paedophiles working in residential care.

But Peter Righton wasn’t the only paedophile who wrote for Social Work Today. Frank Beck, the paedophile at the centre of the Leicestershire children’s homes scandal, was also given a platform for his views.

Staff deny care charges (5.9.91)

Staff deny care charges

A former officer-in-charge and two former deputies of Leicestershire children's homes are to go on trial later this month facing charges of abusing young people in care.

The three men are to be tried at Leicester Crown Court on charges of physical and sexual abuse of children over a 13-year period. They have denied the charges.

The trial, which starts on 16 September, is expected to last about eight weeks.

Allegations against men, who are now unemployed, led to an 18-month police investigation involving five homes over the period 1973-1986.

All the homes have now been closed.

A major reorganisation of Leicestershire SSD took place in 1986 and the authority was the first in the country to have a children's rights officer.

Frank Beck, aged 49, who was officer-in-charge of four homes until 1986, faces 29 charges of buggery, actual bodily harm, indecent assault, attempted buggery and rape.

Beck joined Leicestershire SSD in 1973 to be officer-in-charge of The Poplars, Market Harborough, until 1975. He then moved to Ratcliffe Road home, Leicester, then briefly to Rosehill, Market Harborough and finally spent eight years in charge of The Beeches in Leicester Forest East before he left the authority in 1986.

Peter Jaynes, aged 42, who was deputy officer-in-charge of the Poplars and Ratcliffe Road faces two counts of indecent assault and one of ABH. He left the authority in 1980.

George Lincoln, aged 39, who was deputy officer-in-charge of Rosehill, The Beeches and Liberty Road, faces one joint charge with Beck of buggery. He left Leicestershire in 1981.

Beck has been remanded in custody at Leicester prison.

Quote:
‘Abuse victims’ tell of their childhood torment (27.9.91)
Ian Katz

Seven former residents of Leicestershire children's homes have told
a jury of sexual abuse and violence by social workers in charge of the homes.

Three males, now adults, claimed they had been buggered by Frank Beck,
the officer in charge of three homes between 1973 and 1986, and a 31-year old
woman said she had been repeatedly raped and buggered by Mr Beck and
sexually assaulted by other social workers.

Two men said they had been repeatedly sexually assaulted as children
in Mr Beck's care.

Giving evidence from behind a screen, the woman told Leicester crown court
that she had had her appendix removed as a teenager to escape sexual abuse
by social workers.

Cross-examined by John Black, counsel for Mr Beck, she described how she had
heard an argument between Mr Beck and a boy resident, who boasted that he
was a rent boy, relating to Greville Janner, MP for Leicester West.

"He was shouting to XXXX (the boy) that he wasn't going to see Greville Janner
any more," she said.

Mr Beck, aged 49, denies 29 charges of buggery, attempted buggery, rape,
indecent assault, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Two social workers who served as deputies to Mr Beck, Peter Jaynes and
George Lincoln, deny a total of four charges of buggery, indecent assault a
nd assault.

The catalogue of alleged abuse and violence unfolded during seven days of evidence
given by former residents, some of whom were shielded from Mr Beck's view by a screen.

Day one

Last Tuesday XXXX XXXXX, from Blackpool, now aged 29, told the jury how Mr Beck
held him face down and buggered him after he had been taken to his quarters.

"I was telling him to get off me but he was holding me down after he'd got inside me,"
Mr XXXX said.

He added that he felt scared and ashamed after the incident and told no-one.

Mr XXXX claimed he also received regular beatings from Mr Beck for nothing." He said
up to a dozen members of staff were involved in administering summary beatings
to children in the home.

Day two

Cross-examined by John Black, Mr XXXX denied pressure had been put on him
by the police to give evidence.

He admitted that he had applied for compensation from the criminal injuries compensation
board but denied that he was motivated by the possibility of receiving financial compensation
if Mr Beck was convisted.

Day three

XXXXX XXXXXX, aged 26, described how Mr Beck had performed oral sex with him at the age
of 10 or 11. Mr XXXXXX said staff at the home would keep him away from school on days when
his injuries would be noticed. He also denied a suggestion by Mr Black that he had been persuaded
to make a statement by the police.

Later, XXXXXX XXXXX, 32, from Dartford, Kent, alleged that he had been raped by Mr Beck
at the age of 16. "We were just sitting chatting normal when he actually picked me up and
carried me to his bedroom. He took my clothes off.

http://spotlightonabuse.files.wordpr...3/g27991b1.jpg

Day four

XXXXXX XXXXXX, 20, claimed he was buggered by Mr Beck on five occasions at the
Ratcliffe Road home where, aged eight, he was the youngest child.

From behind a screen, he claimed this happened during bathtime homosexual sex sessions
when Mr Beck would also masturbate himself or get Mr XXXXXX to do it for him.

Cross-examined by Mr Black, he was asked why he had never made a complaint before.
He said he had always thought he would not be believed.

Day five

On Monday a 31-year old woman, who claimed she had been repeatedly buggered and
raped by Mr Beck and indecently assaulted by Mr Jaynes, described how Mr Beck had
threatened to return her to a psychiatric unit if she did not do as he wished.

She said she was sent the Ratcliffe Road children's home from the Towers Hospital, a local
psychiatric unit, at the age of 15. The woman also claimed she was raped and buggered by
Mr Beck after disturbing him and a young boy resident in homosexual activity.

The woman said she was still a virgin when the alleged rape happened. Mr Beck had sexual
contact with her around 30 more times before she feigned illness, which led to her hospitalisation,
to escape the home.

Day six

Cross-examined by Mr Black, the woman confirmed that she had overheard an argument
between Mr Beck and a boy, named as XXXX XXXX, concerning Greville Janner.

"He was shouting to XXXX that he wasn't going to see Greville Janner," she said.

Mr Black asked her: "XXXX XXXX used to boast about being a rent boy, didn't he?"

"When he first came to the home, yes he did," she replied.

Mr Black continued: "Mr Beck, I suggest you know perfectly well, utterly disapproved of
any form of homosexual contact between men and children at his, didn't he?"

"I cannot agree with what you say," replied the woman.

She denied a suggestion by Mr Black that she was lying by claiming she was a virgin when
she was allegedly raped and buggered by Fran Beck.

Day seven

On Wednesday, XXXXX XXXXX, now 30, told the jury how he complained to police more than
15 years ago about sex abuse in the Ratcliffe Road children's home.

Mr XXXXXX said he told his mother that he had been abused by Mr Beck and Mr Jaynes
at the end of his two-year stay in the home and the police were informed.

Giving evidence from behind a screen, he described two incidents during which he was allegedly
sexually abused by Mr Beck and one in which he was allegedly abused by Mr Jaynes.

Cross-examined by Mr Black, Mr XXXXXX agreed that he had previously tried to escape from
a children's home but denied that he had fabricated allegations of abuse to escape the Ratcliffe Road home.
