PROVOCATIVE ARTWORK REVERSES ROLES BETWEEN HUMANS AND ANIMALS
January 26, 2018

http://www.wakingtimes.com/2018/01/2...umans-animals/

Vic Bishop, Staff Writer
Waking Times

One of the most effective techniques psychologists use in conflict resolution is role reversal, which helps people to see the other’s perspective and to empathize with them. Empathy is something that is seriously deficient in our modern world, especially when it comes to the treatment of animals.

From factory farming and concentrated animal feeding operations, to big hunting and ivory poaching, to ocean bottom trawling and dolphin slaughters, to the incineration of rainforests, animals in general have a tough lot here on planet earth with all of us humans.

Art in our culture often fills the role of devil’s advocate, helping us to see things which may be right in front of our eyes but that we refuse to acknowledge. Artist Barbara Daniels uses her artwork to help us see the truth about our relationship with animals, and her drawings and paintings are insanely captivating.

Interesting facts : Bernard Matthews Turkey Farms slaughter 50,000 turkeys per day. The birds are bred so fat that they are rendered incapable of reproducing naturally, so human labour is hired to extract the reproductive fluids by hand, known affectionately by the Norfolk community as "Turkey Tossers".

Not all vegetarians are nature or animal lovers : Palm oil is in over half of all supermarket products, global demand for the commodity directly results in deforestation of the rainforests in Sumatra and Borneo at a rate of 146 football pitches PER HOUR. As a direct result, the native Borneo Orang Utan population has more than halved in population since 1999.

There is a groundhog stretched out taking a nap on the back deck right now. Never have seen one that comfortable before. Could be a pregnant little momma? Enjoying a lot of wildlife in the new place with all the windows here. We have skunks. I think they are living in a burrow next to the house. Last week a neighborhood cat tried to attack one and got sprayed! The Peregrine Falcon has made appearances. Lots of mating pairs of birds. Surprised by a huge wild turkey walking through the yard one day...squirrel family species of all sizes, rabbits...kind of regular species mostly but it is so interesting to study their behavior when they don't even know you are there. Smoke a little on the porch and watch your own little nature doc of the the rabbit eating dandelions hahahaha!

One of the skunks living right next to the house has a totally white head and neck and is mostly white over the rest of it's body. It looks so neat. Last night it came out and pawed around in the front yard for a while. In the dark it took a minute to realize a baby was tagging along right up behind it.

Realizing it had a young one made me realize what its' behavior the other week was about. One night we saw it frantically running back and forth between our house and somewhere up the street. The second time it came back to the yard it picked some living thing up in its' mouth. We could hear it seem to squeak happily as it trotted back to its' spot. I thought it must be a small animal it was going to eat but seeing that baby last night made me understand what happened: she had lost her baby and was retracing her steps over and over until she found it!

One phone provider is now devoted to saving the bees offering an eco-friendly service which uses a share of its profits to buy back wildflower land for bees:

Also, Sir David Attenborough's great 2018 British Bee Count is now on inviting everyone to sit and watch for Butterflies for 15 minutes and report in the results (free downloadable Butterflies Identifier chart available). Link below:

Baby skunks are noticeably larger. We saw perhaps their first wanderings sans mother last week. Last night they were tussling with each other in the yard then they wandered off together. They walk so close in a line it looks like a single creature in the dark.

Ah but ah but...does it perchance contain any Palm Oil or does it prefer not to detail the nature of the emulsifier used ?

Hitler's Jurassic Park ~ only came across this recently via a National Geographic video of the Third Reich's desire to create Germanic hunting grounds of near extinct animals in the forests of North East Poland. The project, presided over by keen huntsman Herman Goering and Heinrich Himmler extended the notion of ethnic cleansing beyond the Jewish and Romany fraternity but the entire animal kingdom, short clip here:

Joining the dots as one does, is there more to Spileberg's Jurassic Park than meets the eye?

20 year old Jacob Macdonald of Melbourne, Australia has been arrested for deliberately running down Emus in his car for kicks under charges of animal cruelty. Horrific footage below caution: viewer discretion advised.

‘It’s a long time coming’: $6.2 million wildlife bridge over I-90 nears completion
Originally published September 25, 2018

https://static.seattletimes.com/wp-c...21-768x554.jpg

The wildlife bridge better connects north and south Cascades habitat. Traffic on Interstate 90 has been a barrier to wildlife.

It’s just a patch of barren earth not much wider than a basketball court, but conservationists, government workers and construction managers are pretty fired up about it.

“This is going to be really amazing,” said Patty Garvey-Darda, a wildlife biologist in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. “It’s a long time coming.”

The dirt surface spans a bridge structure across Interstate 90 near milepost 61 called an animal overcrossing. For decades, animals have had to contend with heavy traffic on I-90 that has squashed plenty of creatures and cleaved entire populations in two. No longer.

The new $6.2 million overcrossing, which is still under construction near Price Creek, will soon provide safe passage for elk, bears and maybe even mountain goats, as part of an ambitious overhaul of I-90 to reconnect wildlife habitats in the north and south Cascades. Cars pass through two concrete archways underneath.
