Default Music inspired by astrology

A collection of different pieces inspired by the star signs and things astrological.

Beginning with this classic.

And my favourite from the sublime Planets suite.

The Fifth House is commonly referred to as the House of Pleasure. Oftentimes, the pleasure is the result of a creative act.

Other notable Virgo saxophonists besides Wayne Shorter are Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, Dave Liebman & Branford Marsalis. John Coltrane was a Libra born on the cusp of Virgo (just 2 hrs and 34 minutes out).

There is an album of classical Holst's The Planets II composed in the 1990's I think covering all the other little planets and moons Holst didn't know about back then. It's rather good.

Bit of trivia now - the tune heard on the piano at the beginning is the jazz standard Polka Dots and Moonbeams.

Another one of those tomorrow.

I'd be interested to hear that.
By coincidence the original was first performed 100 years ago this month.

Arguable whether this works or not. The Planets is a good vehicle to explore those harmonies, and in itself I like how they've done the opening 'Mars'. Only thing is, it doesn't have that sense of impending explosion you hear in the original.

I've a feeling Venus may be more suited.

Another bit of trivia. The opening section of The Planets 'Mars' was written in 5/4 time (five beats to each bar rather than the most commonly-used four).

In the Kabbalah/Tree of Life, the fifth sphere also corresponds to Mars and all the attributes associated with the planet, esoterically/astrologically speaking.

I don't know whether that's pure coincidence or done by Holst deliberately.

This is an oldie, over 40 years. I still think they are beautiful compositions.

Rod McKuen Written in the Stars. I had the LP - one for each sign of the zodiac.
