Why would anyone call bread roll a barm 'cake'?
I'd feel cheated if I order a cake and bread roll turns up.

They have 'stotty cakes' in Newcastle. That's bread too! Must be a Northern thang!

It is a strange one...I remember years ago ordering dinner in a chippy in London and asking for a barm cake with it...which got a very puzzled look, chaos ensued until he eventually said 'Ohhh you mean a roll!!'. Live and learn eh?

I think we were too poor for sugar in the olden days up North...calling it a cake made us feel better maybe?

Do they sell the cake in Tesco up there? Or do they call it bread roll? I wonder...

Can you tell I've not ventured up there?
I've been to Rotherham but I thought it was a sad town.

I cant answer that question on a pants thread, apparently! tbf, all zhibas threads are a bit pants, aren't they
