Lightbulb Sir Francis

Drake - National Portrait Gallery + The Arms of Sir Francis Drake..
Quote:
Francis Drake was born in Tavistock, Devon, England..Although his berth is not formally recorded, it is known that he was born while the Six Articles were in force.. "Drake was two and twenty when he obtained the command of the Judith" (1566). This would date his birth to 1544..At age 23, Drake made his first voyage to the Americas, sailing with his second cousin, Sir John Hawkins, on one of a fleet of ships owned by his relatives, the Hawkins family of Plymouth.. In 1568 Drake was again with the Hawkins fleet when it was trapped by the Spaniards in the Mexican port of San Juan de Ulúa.. He escaped along with Hawkins..The Queen declared that all written accounts of Drake's voyages were to become the Queen's secrets of the Realm, and Drake and the other participants of his voyages on the spain of death sworn to their secrecy; she intended to keep Drake's activities away from the eyes of rival Spain.. Drake presented the Queen with a jewel token commemorating the circumnavigation.. Taken as a prize off the Pacific coast of Mexico, it was made of enamelled gold and bore an African diamond and a ship with an ebony hull..

Sir Francis Drake Intro (1961)..

Queen Elizabeth awarded Drake a knighthood aboard Golden Hind in Deptford on 4 April 1581; the dubbing being performed by a French diplomat, Monsieur de Marchaumont, who was negotiating for Elizabeth to marry the King of France's brother, Francis, Duke of Anjou..By getting the French diplomat involved in the knighting, Elizabeth was gaining the implicit political support of the French for Drake's actions.. During the Victorian era, in a spirit of nationalism, the story was promoted that Elizabeth I had done the knighting..

Elizabeth R Part 5 (BBC 1971) The Enterprise of England ..

After receiving his knighthood Drake unilaterally adopted the armorials of the ancient Devon family of Drake of Ash, near Musbury, to whom he claimed a distant but unspecified kinship..These arms were: Argent, a wyvern wings displayed and tail nowed gules, and the crest, a dexter arm Proper grasping a battle axe Sable, headed Argent..The motto, Sic Parvis Magna, translated literally, is: "Thus great things from small things"..The hand out of the clouds, labelled Auxilio Divino, means "With Divine Help"..The full achievement is depicted in the form of a large coloured plaster overmantel in the Lifetimes Gallery at Buckland Abbey...

https://forum.davidicke.com/showpost...0&postcount=82I am not sure whether he's sane..If there's any doubt about the matter, he is..Ah, said Silver, it were fortunate for me that I had Hawkins here..The captain has said too much or he has said too little, and I'm bound to say that I require an explanation of his words..We must lay to, if you please, and keep a bright lookout..It's trying on a man, I know...https://forum.davidicke.com/showpost...&postcount=144

RegiMental Bath..I just wondered whether the regi bath still happens.. You remember bass broom scrubbing brush and Ajax.. This only ever Occured in extreme cases when some unclean person persistantly let the troop down because he was gungy..I suppose in these political correct Days it wouldnt occur, would it ?..

The British Sovereign is the Sovereign of the Order of the Bath..In the British Army or Royal Marines, or Air Chief Marshal in the Royal Air Force..KCBs must at least hold the rank of vice admiral, lieutenant general in the Army or Marines, or Air Marshal..Members of the Order wear elaborate costumes on important occasions..The military badge is a gold Maltese Cross of 8 points, enamelled in white..The civil badge is a plain gold oval, bearing 3 crowns on the obverse side, and a rose, a thistle and a shamrock, emanating from a sceptre on the reverse side..The Chapel of the Order is the Henry VII Lady Chapel in Westminster Abbey..Under Queen Victoria's 1847 statutes a member "convicted of treason, cowardice, felony, or any infamous crime derogatory to his honour as a knight or gentleman, or accused and does not submit to trial in a reasonable time, shall be degraded from the Order by a special ordinance signed by the sovereign"..In 1923 the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was made an honorary Knight Grand Cross, by King George V. Mussolini was stripped of his GCB in 1940, after he had declared war on the UK..

Rihanna - Stay ft. Mikky Ekko ..

RAised a military brat, Morrison's family moved often..His ancestors were Scottish, Irish, and English..In the official account of his death, he was found in a Paris apartment bathtub..No autopsy was performed, and the exact cause of Morrison's death is still disputed.. Morrison is interred at Père Lachaise Cemetery in eastern Paris..After his death, a notebook of poetry written by Morrison was recovered entitled Paris Journal which amongst other personal details, contains the allegorical foretelling of a man who will be left grieving and having to abandon his belongings, due to a police investigation into a death connected to the Chinese opium trade..Furo are part of the Japanese ritual of bathing, not meant for washing but RAther for relaxing and warming oneself..

Judith & Kwenthrith Bathing Scene..

Why did Jessica & Holly - the dark-haired girl and the blonde, the 'tomboy' and the 'angel', the swimmer and the majorette - dye that evening?..His story - which he was led through on Moonday by his lawyer - is that he was outside his house cleaning Sadie, his dog, when the girls came down the road; that he took Holly and Jessica into his house because Holly had a nosebleed; took them upstairs into the bathroom where Holly sat on the edge of the full bath and he gave her tissues to staunch it; took Holly into his bedroom, to sit on the bed while Jessica used the toilet, took Holly back into the bathroom where she could finish cleaning up her nosebleed; accidentally slipped beside Holly and the full bath, and heard a splash; froze in panic; placed his hand over Jessica's mouth because she was screaming, 'You pushed her'...Two days later, on February 11, Houston was found unconscious in Suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, submerged in the bathtub..On March 22, 2012, the Los Angeles County coroner's office reported the cause of Houston's death was drowning..During the making of the film Brainstorm, Natalie Wood drowned while on a weekend boat trip to Santa Catalina Island on board the Splendour..

Why did he have a full bath when he was cleaning the dog outside ? why would he not take them into the kitchen ?..Did holly always suffer from nosebleeds, or was it just after leaving the barbiecue she just happened to start bleeding passing Huntleys haus..Why would she not go hom in first Place?..

Police visited Williams's home during the afternoon of Monday 23 August 2010, as a "welfare check" after colleagues noted he had been out of contact for several days..His decomposing naked remains were found in a red North Face bag (where the nose is located rose ) , padlocked from the outside, in the bath of the main bedroom's en-suite bathroom..An expert brought in to examine the bag in which Williams's body was found concluded that Williams could not have locked it..In September and October 2015, Boris Karpichkov, a former KGB agent who defected from Russia and who now lives in Britain, stated during interviews that "sources in Russia" have claimed that the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, also known as the SVR, was responsible for Williams's murder..The idea of The North Face originated after a hiking trip on the Eagle Mountain in Minnesota..and we all know what HUNT Rhymes with !..

Eagle Mountain is the highest natural point in Minnesota, at 2,301 feet (701 m)..The word Minnesota comes from the Dakota name for the Minnesota River: The river got its name from one of two words in the Dakota language, either 'Mnisota' which means "clear blue water", or 'Mnißota', which means cloudy water..The state's iron-mining industry was established with the discovery of iron in the Vermilion Range and the Mesabi Range in the 1880s..Minnesota's economy was hard-hit by the Great Depression..Saint Paul is adjacent to Minnesota's most populous city, Minneapolis; they and their suburbs are known collectively as the Twin Cities metropolitan area..The state has 17 cities...

Lightbulb MacRae

Quote:
Willie MacRae (18 May 1923 – 7 April 1985) was a Scottish naval officer, lawyer, orator, politician and anti-nuclear campaigner..In the Second World War he served in the British Army and then the Royal Indian Navy.. He supported the Indian independence movement and for much of his life was active in the Scottish National Party (SNP)..On 5 April 1985 MacRae left his Glasgow flat at 18:30 to spend the weekend at his cottage near Dornie, Ross-shire.. He was not seen again until the next morning around 10:00, when two Australian tourists saw his maroon Volvo saloon car on a moor a short distance from the junction of the A887 and A87 roads Bun Loyne, Glenmoriston, Inverness-shire..The car was straddling a burn about 90 feet (27 m) from the road.. The tourists flagged down the next car to pass, whose driver turned out to be a doctor, Dorothy Messer, accompanied by her fiancé as well as David Coutts, an SNP Dundee councillor who knew MacRae..It was discovered that MacRae was in the car..His hands were "folded on his lap", his head was "slumped on his right shoulder", and there was a "considerable amount of blood on his temple"..

A87 road..

He was not wearing a seat belt..A weapon was found the next day, in the burn over which the car had been discovered, 60 feet (18 m) from the vehicle.. It was a Smith & Wesson .45 calibre revolver which had been fired twice..Although it was ruled at the time by authorities that MacRae's death was undetermined, aspects of the investigation remain disputed, some claiming that the distance from MacRae's car at which the gun was found and the lack of fingerprints on it rendered a suicide not credible..Neither MacRae's medical reports nor the post-mortem data have been released to the public and there was no fatal Incident inquiry..The A87 is a major road in the Highland region of Scotland..It runs west from its junction with the A82 road at Invergarry (NH307011), along the north shores of Loch Garry and Loch Cluanie, then down through Glen Shiel and along Loch Duich to Kyle of Lochalsh before crossing the Skye Bridge to Kyleakin, Broadford, and Portree, before terminating at Uig on the west coast of the Isle of Skye..

The Mysterious Death of Willie MacRae..

The investigation was headed by Chief Superintendent Andrew Lester of Northern Constabulary CID..Barry Strevens, an X-detective chief inspector for Cheshire police and former bodyguard to Margaret Thatcher, also claimed he warned her that another of her aides, Peter Morrison, allegedly held sex parties with under-age boys..Strevens said that, despite his passing on the allegations to Thatcher, she later promoted Morrison to the position of deputy chairman of the Conservative party..The Scottish Sunday Express published a claim in November 2014 that in 1985 a Scottish solicitor and former vice-chairman of the Scottish National Party, Willie MacRae, had evidence about paedophiles in the Scottish and English establishments..On 5 April 1985, MacRae's car crashed on a remote stretch of the A87 road in Inverness-shire; he was shot in the head with a revolver and left to dye..The evidence was supposedly in a briefcase in McRae's car at the time but disappeared..The gun was recovered some distance from the car, but there were no fingerprints.. In 2006, a former policeman, Iain Fraser, who worked as a private investigator after leaving the police, said he was asked by a mystery client to spy on McRae 3 weeks before he died.. Fraser added to calls for a public inquiry into the DEath..Repeated requests for an official inquiry into MacRae's DEath have been turned down..Why don't we go check out something?..

Triangular Trade Depiction..
Quote:
A triangle is a polygon with 3 edges and 3 vertices..A classic example is the colonial molasses trade..Sugar (often in its liquid form, molasses) from the Caribbean was traded to Europe or New England, where it was distilled into rum..The profits from the sale of sugar were used to purchase manufactured goods, which were then shipped to West Africa, where they were bartered for slaves.. The trip itself took 5 to twelve weeks..The first leg of the triangle was from a European port to Africa..When the ship arrived, its cargo would be sold or bartered for slaves.. On the second leg, ships made the journey of the Middle Passage from Africa to the New World..Many slaves died of disease in the crowded holds of the slave ships..Once the ship reached the New World, enslaved survivors were sold in the Caribbean or the American colonies, and loaded with export goods for a return Voyage, the third leg, to their home port..The ship then returned to Europe to complete the triangle..The Trade is a model, not an exact description of the ship's route..The term "triangular trade" also refers to a variety of other trades which evolved before the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain, the colonies of British North America, and British colonies in the Caribbean..The shipment of Newfoundland salt cod & corn from Boston in British vessels to southern Europe..This also included the shipment of wine and olive oil to Britain..A "sugar triangle" developed in the 1820s and 1830s whereby American ships took local produce to Cueba, then brought sugar or coffee from Cuba to the Baltic coast (Russian Empire and Sweden), then bar iron and hemp back to New England..Puritan Separatist Pilgrims from England first settled in the region in 1620, forming the Plymouth Colony, the first successful English settlement in the Americas..

Have you recently had a close encounter? ..

TWA 517 do you want to report a UFO, over?.The earliest suggestion of unusual disappearances in the Bermuda area appeared in a September 17, 1950 article published in The Miami Herald (Associated Press) by Edward Van Winkle Jones.. Two years later, Fate magazine published "Sea Mystery at Our Back Door", a short article by George X..Sand covering the loss of several planes & ships, including the loss of Flight 19, a group of 5 U.S. Navy Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers on a training mission.. Sand's article was the first to lay out the now-familiar triangular area where the losses took place..In the April 1962 issue of American Legion magazine, author Allan W. Eckert wrote that the flight leader had been heard saying, "We are entering white water, nothing seems right.. We don't know where we are, the water is green, no white".. He also wrote that officials at the Navy board of inquiry stated that the planes "flew off to Mars..

Tim Buckley + Dolphins - Whistle Test (May '74) +Hinkley on butterfly peacock bass..

Dolphins are found living in bodies of water around the world..Most of them live in saltwater but they can also live in freshwater locations..They are very smart creatures and have the intelligence to modify their habitat when possible for survival..A military dolphin is a dolphin trained for military uses..Dolphins are still being trained by the US Navy for other tasks as part of the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program..A number of militaries have employed dolphins for various purposes from finding mines to rescueing lost or trapped humans..In some parts of the world, such as Taiji, Japan and the Faroe Islands, dolphins are traditionally considered as food, and are killed in harpoon or drive hunts..Dolphin meat is dense and such a dark shade of red as to appear black..Orcas, the largest species of dolphin, have been involved in fatal attacks on humans in captivity..There have been human health concerns associated with the consumption of dolphin meat in Japan after tests showed that dolphin meat contained high levels of Mercury...

Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire..

Koshiki-no-kata by Kano(l) and Yamashita(r)..
Quote:
The name "trimaran" is a 20th-century word concocted from "Tri" and "(Cata)maran".. It is thought to have been invented by Victor Chechet, a pioneering, Russian modern multihull designer..The first trimarans were built by indigenous Polynesians and other Pacific islanders almost 4,000 years ago, and some of the current US terminology is derived from them.. Sailing catamarans and trimarans gained popularity during the 1960s and 70's..Dragonfly Trimarans is a line of trimaran sailboats built by the Quorning Boats shipyard in Skærbækvej, near Fredericia, Denmark founded in 1967 by Børge Quorning..Cat's eyes are particularly valuable in fog and are largely resistant to damage from snow ploughs..A key feature of the cat's eye is the flexible rubber dome which is occasionally deformed by the passage of traffic..The name "cat's eye" comes from Shaw's inspiration for the device: the eyeshine reflecting from the eyes of a Kat..The kingfishers were traditionally treated as 1 family, the Alcedinidae, With 3 subfamilies..Kingfisher is an Indian beer brewed by United Breweries Group, Bangalore..

The Kliffs of Praia da Luz..

Katamaran -type vessels were first developed as early as 1500 BCE by the Polynesian peoples..The first documented example of double-hulled craft in Europe was designed by William Petty in 1662 to sail faster, in shallower waters, in lighter wind, and with fewer crew than other vessels of the time..The design remained relatively unused in the West for almost 160 years until the early 19th-century, when the Englishman Mayflower F. Crisp built a two-hulled merchant ship in Rangoon, Burma.. The ship was christened Original..An outgrowth of the popularity of cruising sailing catamarans are powered catamarans, which share many of the amenities found in a sail cruising catamaran..Military Sealift Command currently operates several Expeditionary Fast Transport catamarans which are owned by the U.S. Navy..The US Navy commissioned the construction of a SWATH ship to test the configuration..Wave-piercing catamarans employ a low-buoyancy bow on each hull that is pointed at the water line and rises aft, up to a level, to allow each hull to pierce waves, rather than ride over them..The spanning bridge deck may be configured with some of the characteristics of a normal V-hull, which allows it to penetrate the crests of waves..Madeira was re-discovered by Portuguese sailors in the service of Infante D. Henrique (Henry the Navigator) in 1419, and settled after 1420..The archipelago is considered to be the first territorial discovery of the exploratory period of the Portuguese Age of Discovery..

Waterworld Movie CLIP + New (1995) HD ..

The Archdeacon's House in Bangor was the setting for act 3, scene I of William Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1..Aikido techniques consist of entering and turning movements that redirect the momentum of an opponent's attack, and a throw or joint lock that terminates the technique..Many of the strikes ( uchi) of aikido resemble cuts from a sword or other grasped object, which indicate its origins in techniques intended for armed combat.. Other techniques, which explicitly appear to be punches (tsuki), are practiced as thrusts with a knife or sword..The most popular image associated with kata is that of a karate practitioner performing a series of punches and kicks in the air..The number of moves may also have links with Buddhist spirituality..In Japanese language kata meaning “way of doing,” with emphasis on the form and order of the process..Nekoashi-dachi (cat foot stance)..All weight rests on the back leg, which is bent at the knee.. Other meanings are “training method” and “formal exercise”.. The goal of a painter’s practicing, for example, is to merge his consciousness with his brush; the potter’s with his clay; the garden designer’s with the materials of the garden..Once such mastery is achieved, the theory goes, the doing of a thing perfectly is as easy as Thinking it...

Catania is located on the east coast of the Island of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna..According to Place-names of the World, the name Etna originated from the Phoenician word attuna meaning "furnace" or "chimney"..He dismisses the hypothesis that Etna is from the Greek (aitho), meaning "I burn", through an iotacist pronunciation.. In Classical Greek, it is called (Aitne), a name given also to Catania and the city originally known as Inessa, and in Latin it is called Aetna.. In Arabic, it was called Jabal al-Nar (the Mountain of Fire)..It is also known as Mungibeddu in Sicilian and Mongibello or Montebello in Italian..Nowadays, the term Mongibello indicates the mountain's top area of the 2 central craters encompassing also the craters in the southeast and the northeast of the volcanic cone..According to another hypothesis the term Mongibello comes from the Latin Mulciber (qui ignem mulcet, who placates the fire), one of the Latin names of the Roman god Vulcan..

Lightbulb The Sun from the South

Reconstructions of two versions fa the historical Oriflamme banner..
Quote:
The Oriflamme (from Latin aurea flamma, "golden flame") was the battle standard of the King of France in the Middle Ages..It was originally the sacred banner of the Abbey of St. Denis, a monastery near Paris.. When the oriflamme was raised in battle by the French royalty during the Middle Ages, most notably during the Hundred Years War, no prisoners were to be taken until it was lowered.. Through this tactic they hoped to strike fear into the of the enemy, especially the nobles, who could usually expect to be taken alive for ransom during such military encounters..The banner was red or orange-red silk and flown from a gilded lance..According to legend, its colour stems from it being dipped in the blood of the recently beheaded St. Denis..When the Offaflamme was displayed on the battlefield it indicated that no quarter was to be given, its red colour being symbolic of cruelty and ferocity..

Coat of arms of Luz

Luz is located in the southwest corner of the municipality of Lagos, and covers an area of 21.78 km².. It is bordered to the South by the Atlantic Ocean..The existence of human artifacts and shell mounds in the area is a constant, suggesting a human presence before organized civilization..The Romans left behind the remnants of a spa, which represents one of the more important archaeological discoveries of the modern municipality.. Following the decline of the Pax Romana, the Algarve began to be threatened by peoples from the lands of ancient Morocco..The Arabs brought with them many of the fruit orchards that continue to exist in the foothills of Luz.. Moorish rule in the Algarve resulted in the assimilation of the indigenous cultures, transforming the region into a major economic power..The Christian conquest and Reconquista resulted in the expulsion of the Moors from the Algarve, in the institutionalization of Christianity and the building of churches.. During the Middle Ages, the parish was officially referred to as Nossa Senhora da Luz..Much like many of the coastal communities of Portugal, Luz was susceptible to attacks by pirates from North Africa..Luz was frequently attacked by Moars, who plied the water of the Algarve, attacked small settlements, and pillaged the treasures of the churches and homes of its residents..Many of the fishermen became employees of the hotel industry, while the cannery employees, welders and farmers began working in civil construction..Maids perform typical domestic chores such as cooking, ironing, washing, cleaning the house, grocery shopping, walking the family dog, and taking care of children..The visitor to Luz encounters many façades with Manueline-era architectural motifs..Lagos is twinned with..Torres Vedras, district of Lisbon, Portugal - Palos de la Frontera, autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain - Santiago (“Saint James”), in Cape Verdean Creole, is the largest island offa Cape Verde - The Green Island..The countries of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya are often collectively referred to as the Maghreb, which is the Arabic word for "Sunset"..

Princess Gisla of West Francia..

Vikings Church Scene & Floki's War Chant s03e07 ..

Although the azure ground (from the blue cope of St. Martin of Tours) strewn with gold fleur-de-lis remained the symbol of royalty until the 15th century, the Oriflamme became the royal battle standard of the King of France, and it was carried at the head of the king's forces when they met another army in battle.. In the fifteenth century, the fleur-de-lis on the white flag of Joan of Arc became the new royal standard replacing both the symbol of royalty and the Oriflamme on the battle field..The bearer of the standard, the porte-oriflamme, became an office (like that of Marshal or Constable) and a great honour, as it was an important and very dangerous job to take charge of such a visible symbol in battle.. If things went badly, the bearer was expected to dye rather than relinquish his charge..A solar symbol is a symbol which symbolises the Sun..In the poem Völuspá, a dead Völva recounts the history of the universe and foretells the future to the disguised god Odin..Old Norse volva means "Wand carrier" or "carrier of a Magick staff"..Máni (Old Norse/Icelandic "moon") is the personification offa the moon in Norse mythology..Most authorities consider manipadme to be one compound word rather than two simple words..The word Mani means "jewel" or "bead; but the crystal blue eye has always been the most popular one...

A medieval map of the Black Sea by Diogo Homem..

The Type VIIC was the workhorse of the German U-boat force, with 568 commissioned from 1940 to 1945.. The first VIIC boat commissioned was the U-69 in 1940.. The Type VIIC was an effective fighting machine and was seen almost everywhere U-boats operated, although its range of only 8,500 nautical miles was not as great as that of the larger Type IX (11,000 nautical miles), severely limiting the time it could spend in the far reaches of the western and southern Atlantic without refueling from a tender or U-boat tanker..The VIIC came into service toward the end of the "First Happy Time" near the beginning of the war and was still the most numerous type in service when Allied anti-submarine efforts finally defeated the U-boat campaign in late 1943 and 1944..Type VIIC/41 difference was a stronger pressure hull giving them a deeper crush depth and lighter machinery to compensate for the added steel in the hull, making them slightly lighter than the VIIC..All of them from U-1271 onwards lacked the fittings to handle mines...

A Subsidiary Merritt-Chapman & Scott..

Spruance in April 1944..
Quote:
USS Indianapolis (CL/CA-35) was a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy.. She was named for the city of Indianapolis, Indiana..Indianapolis was the second of two ships in the Portland class; the 3rd class of "treaty cruisers" constructed by the US Navy following the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, following the 2 vessels of the Pensacola class ordered in 1926 and the 6 of the Northampton class ordered in 1927..She was the flagship of Admiral Raymond Spruance while he commanded the Fifth Fleet in battles across the Central Pacific..She was reclassified a heavy cruiser, because of her 8-inch guns, with the symbol CA-35 on 1 July 1931, in accordance with the London Naval Treaty..The 107,000 shaft horsepower (80,000 kW) gave a design speed of 32.7 knots (60.6 km/h)..Indianapolis was laid down by New York Shipbuilding Corporation on 31 March 1930..Under her first captain, John M. Smeallie, Indianapolis undertook her shakedown cruise through the Atlantic and into Guantánamo Bay until 23 February 1932..On 6 September, she embarked Secretary of the Navy Claude A. Swanson for an inspection of the Navy in the Pacific..Indianapolis toured the Canal Zone, Hawaii, and installations in San Pedro and San Diego..Swanson disembarked on 27 October..On 7 December 1941, Indianapolis was conducting a mock bombardment at Johnston Atoll during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour..

Jaws Movie CLIP - Scars (1975) HD ..

With the task force, she steamed to the South Pacific, to 350 mi (560 km) south of Rabaul, New Britain, escorting the aircraft carrier Lexington..In January 1943, Indianapolis supported a landing and occupation on Amchitka, part of an Allied island hopping strategy in the Aleutian Islands..The cruiser met other ships of her task force at Tarawa, and on D-Day minus 1, 31 January 1944, she was one of the cruisers that bombarded the islands of Kwajalein Atoll..In March and April, Indianapolis, still flagship of the 5th Fleet, attacked the Western Carolines..The cruiser had nine Mark 9 8"/55 caliber guns in 3 triple mounts, a superfiring pair fore and one aft..Carrier planes at the Palau Islands on 30–31 March sank 3 destroyers, 17 freighters, 5 oilers and damaged 17 other ships...Indianapolis returned to Saipan on 23 June to resume fire support and 6 days later moved to Tinian to attack shore installations..Meanwhile, Guam had been taken, and Indianapolis was the first ship to enter Apra Harbor since early in the war..The task force also sank a carrier, nine coastal ships, a destroyer, two destroyer escorts, and a cargo ship.. They destroyed hangars, shops, aircraft installations, factories, and other industrial targets..The next target for the U.S. forces was Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands, which were in range of aircraft from the Japanese mainland..On 31 March, the ship's lookouts spotted a Japanese Nakajima Ki-43 fighter as it emerged from the morning twilight and roared at the bridge in a vertical dive..The bomb plummeted through the deck, into the crew's mess hall, down through the berthing compartment, and through the fuel tanks before crashing through the keel & exploding in the water underneath..The concussion blew two gaping holes in the keel which flooded nearby compartments, killing nine crewmen..Indianapolis commenced the long trip across the Pacific to Mare Island Navy Yard for repairs under her own power..

USS Indianapolis, 27 September 1939..

After major repairs and an overhaul, Indianapolis received orders to proceed to Tinian island, carrying parts and the enriched uranium (about half of the world's supply of Uranium-235 at the time) for the atomic bomb Little Boy, which would later be dropped on Hiroshima..Indianapolis departed San Francisco's Hunters Point Naval Shipyard on 16 July 1945, within hours of the Trinity test.. Arriving at Pearl Harbor on 19 July, she raced on unaccompanied, delivering the atomic weapron components to Tinian on 26 July..Indianapolis was then sent to Guam where a number of the crew who had completed their tours of duty were replaced by other sailors - July 26 – Winston Churchill resigns as PM of the UK after his Conservative Party is soundly defeated by the Labour Party in the 1945 general election..Clement Attlee becomes the new PM.. It is the first time that Labour has governed Britain with a majority in the House of Commons - She was born Helen Lydia Mironoff in London, the daughter of Kathleen "Kitty" Alexandrina Eva Matilda (née Rogers; 1909–1996) and Vasily Petrovich Mironoff (1913–1980)..Her mother Russian was English and Romani and her father was , originally from Kuryanovo, Smolensk O-blast founded on September 27, 1937..His efforts were at first highly regarded, but subsequently ignored by the British, which a disillusioned Jeffery attributed to the treachery of Kim Philby and other high-ranking communist agents entrenched in the British system..The flight's purpose was taking many high-ranking Polish officials to ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, a mass murder of Polish intellectuals, politicains, and military officers by the Soviets during World War II...

Arrow Swimming with the Sharks

You're gonna need a Bigger Boat..
Quote:
At 00:14 on 30 July, she was struck on her starboard bow by two Type 95 torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58, under the command of Mochitsura Hashimoto, who initially thought he had spotted an "Idaho-class battleship".. The explosions caused massive damage.. Indianapolis took on a heavy list, and settled by the bow..12 minutes later, she rolled completely over, then her stern rose into the air, and she plunged down.. Some 300 of the 1,196 crewmen went down with the ship..With few lifeboats and many without lifejackets, the remainder of the crew were set adrift..Diana or Diane is a feminine given name probably derived from an Indo-European root word referring to the divine.. It is the name of the Roman goddess Diana of the hunt, forests, and child berth..

Japanese submarine I-58 (1943)..

The submarine was laid down on 26 December 1942 at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, and launched on 30 June 1943.. During construction her 14 cm/40 11th Year Type naval gun was removed, making room for four Kaiten manned suicide torpedoes..On 31 December 1944.. Between 03:10 and 03:27 on 12 January 1945, eleven miles west of Apra, she launched all 4 Kaiten..After the American invasion of Iwo Jima in February 1945, I-58 and I-36 joined the Shimbu group formed to counterattack American forces..In May 1945 the submarine was sent to Kure Navy Yard to refit..At 23:00 on 29 July I-58 surfaced 250 miles north of Palau and headed south..Shortly afterwards the navigation officer Lt. Tanaka spotted a ship approaching from the east, making 12 knots and not zigzagging. Lt.Cdr. Hashimoto (incorrectly) identified the target as an Idaho-class battleship..After manoeuvering into position, at 23:26 (JST) the submarine fired a spread of six torpedoes at 2-second intervals..While the submarine was submerged, at 00:27 on 30 July, Indianapolis capsized and sank at 12°02N 134°48E.. When I-58 made a periscope check, the target was gone.. The submarine surfaced, and departed the area at full speed, heading north while recharging batteries..Immediately prior to the attack, the seas had been moderate, the visibility fluctuating but poor in general, and Indianapolis had been steaming at 17 kn (20 mph; 31 km/h)..

Sea Tales: Missing! The USS Indianapolis Documentary..

Navy command had no knowledge of the ship's sinking until survivors were spotted 3 and a half days later..At 10:25 on 2 August, a PV-1 Ventura from VPB-152 flown by Lieutenant Wilbur "Chuck" Gwinn and copilot Lieutenant Warren Colwell spotted the men adrift while on a routine patrol flight..Cecil J. Doyle was the first vessel on the scene.. Having seen men being attacked by sharks, Marks disobeyed standing orders and landed on the open sea..The destroyers Helm, Madison, and Ralph Talbot were ordered to the rescue scene from Ulithi, along with destroyer escorts Dufilho, Bassett, and Ringness of the Philippine Sea Frontier.. They continued their search for survivors until 8 August..Two of the rescued survivors, Robert Lee Shipman & Frederick Harrison, died in August 1945..While many of Indianapolis's survivors said McVay was not to blame for the sinking, the families of some of the men who died thought otherwise: "Merry Christmas! Our family's holiday would be a lot merrier if you hadn't killed my son", read one piece of mail..The guilt that was placed on his shoulders mounted until he committed suicide in 1968, using his Navy-issue revolver.. McVay was discovered on his front lawn with a toy sailor in one hand..He was 70 years old...Of the 880 who had survived the sinking, only 321 men came out of the water alive; 317 ultimately survived.. They suffered from lack of food and water (leading to dehydration and hypernatremia; some found rations, such as Spam and crackers, amongst the debris), exposure to the elements (leading to hypothermia and severe desquamation), and shark attacks, while some killed themselves or other survivors in various states of delirium.. Others swim off from their groups after hallucinating of a non-existent island, to which they were never to be seen again..Many individuals find the hammerheadshark to be one of the most fascinating...

USS INDIANAPOLIS: MEN OF COURAGE Official Trailer 2016..

The tiger shark is a solitary, mostly nocturnal hunter, and is notable for having the widest food spectrum of all sharks, consuming a variety of prey and has been known to eat inedible, man-made objects that linger in its stomach, and it has a reputation as a "garbage eater" considered a near threatened species due to finning and fishing by humans..The genus, Galeocerdo, is derived from the Greek galeos, which means shark, and the Latin cerdus, the word for the hard hairs of pigs..It is often colloquially called the man-eater shark..Its teeth are specialized to slice through flesh, bone, and other tough substances such as turtle shells..Due to high risk of predatory attacks, dolphins often avoid regions inhabited by tiger sharks..The young develop inside the mother's body up to 16 months..The tiger shark is considered to be sacred (ancestor spirits) by some native Hawaiians who think their eyeball has special power of visual perception..The oceanic whitetip is found globally in deep, open water, with a temperature greater than 18 °C (64 °F)..They are found worldwide between 45°N and 43°S latitude..In 2004, an oceanic whitetip was discovered dead on the west coast of Sweden—far beyond what was once considered the northern boundary of its range..C. longimanus' most distinguishing characteristics are its long, wing-like pectoral and dorsal fins.. The shark's nose is rounded and its eyes are circular, with nictitating membranes and has a 'typical', although somewhat flattened requiem shark body, often with a mildly humpbacked aspect..Mating season is in early summer in the northwest Atlantic Ocean and southwest Indian Ocean, although females captured in the Pacific have been found with embryos year round, suggesting a longer mating season there..It is known to eat, stingrays, sea turtles, birds, gastro bony fish it feeds on include lancet..Peter Benchley, author of Jaws, observed this shark swimming among pilot whales and eating their faeces..Groups often form when individuals converge on a food source, whereupon a feeding frenzy may occur..Hey, Ding... is there an apostrophe in "we're"?...

Lightbulb Veitch

Engraving of a portrait of Vetch by an unknown artist..
Quote:
Samuel Veitch was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 9 December 1668, and was baptised in the Church of Scotland the next day..His father, William Veitch, was a politically active Presbyterian minister..He and his wife Marion Fairley had a number of children, of whom Samuel was the second..Veitch was arrested in the hysteria surrounding the Popish Plot in the late 1670s, but was released..The family harboured the Duke of Argyll, who was sought for his refusal to take oaths prescribed by the Test Act, and Veitch became involved in the Scottish conspiracy contributing to the Monmouth Rebellion..

WTC7 + This is an Orange - Just Pull It..

When that failed, Veitch went into hiding, and eventually fled to the Dutch Republic, where he was joined in 1683 by his two oldest sons, William Jr. and Samuel..The boys studied for the ministry at Utrecht, but neither was interested in pursuing that career. Both became supporters of William of Orange, and Samuel was probably in a regiment of Scottish supporters in the 1688 Glorious Revolution that brought William & Mary to power in England..He was then commissioned a cornet in the Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons, "though very young", at the age of 20..The regiment was sent back to the Netherlands, where it fought in the Nine Years' War..Veitch was wounded at Steinkirk and was also in battle at Landen..By the end of the war he had been promoted to captain..In 1698 Vetch and his brother William joined a Scottish attempt spearheaded by William Paterson to establish a colony on the Isthmus of Panama..The "Darien scheme" failed due to political infighting in the colony, diseases, lack of support, and Spanish hostility..

Vetch formed connections with the politically powerful Livingston family, marrying Margaret, the daughter of Robert Livingston in 1700..Using his knowledge of New France, Vetch proposed to Queen Anne the conquest of all of New France..His proposals included the deportation of the Acadian people to the West Indies so that Nova Scotia could be peopled by Protestant settlers..The 1710 expedition succeeded in capturing the Acadian capital of Port Royal, although little of the surrounding countryside was pacified.. Vetch was named the first governor of Nova Scotia, and the town was renamed Annapolis Royal in honour of the queen..He died in King's Bench Prison, where he had been sent because of his debts, in 1732..He was buried at St. George's in Southwark..Vetch's daughter Alida married Stephen Bayard, scion of another prominent New York family..There is a memorial plaque to Vetch at the Fort Anne National Historic Site in Annapolis Royal..During the American Revolution, the 84th Regiment of Foot (Royal Highland Emigrants) were stationed at Annapolis Royal to guard Nova Scotia against American Privateers...

Lesbian was a built as a cargo ship for the Ellerman Lines by W. Harkess & Sons of Middlesbrough..Little information is available about Lesbian's short career, but details about her final voyage suggest that she may have been employed in cargo service between India and the United Kingdom..At 16:15 on 5 January 1917, U-35 shelled and sank Lesbian east of Malta at position 35°48?N 17°6?E..Although complete details of U-35's attack on Lesbian are not reported in sources, von Arnauld de la Perière's typical method of attack was to open fire with his submarine's 4.1-inch (100 mm) deck gun from a distance of 6,000 yards (5,500 m) and close to 3,000 yards (2,700 m).. There he would wait until the crew had abandoned the ship in lifeboats and then shell the bow and stern of the ship until it sank - After World War I ended, U-35 was transferred to England and docked in Blyth from 1919 to 1920, then broken up...

Broadcast (New Zealand): 25th February, 1991..

Vince Lombardi was fond of the sweep, the action of using a minesweeping small naval Warship designed to engage a clear a rectangular board containing hidden "mines" or bombs without detonating any of them, with help from clues about the number of neighboring mines in each field..The game originates from the 1960s, and has been written for many computing platforms in use today.. It has many variations and offshoots; the player took the role of a private in the US Marine Corps, delivering an important message to the U.S. Command Center..Kaye also proved that infinite minesweeper is Turing complete..A sweep investment, or sweep investment account, is a secondary bank account or type of sweep account that offers additional investment options on idle funds in a primary cash or checking account ..A Chimney sweep clears ash and soot from chimneys Sweep is the name used for 2 categories of Martial arts Techniques - Rear Admiral Philip Lawrence Wilcocks, CB DSC DL (born 14 April 1953) is a former senior British Royal Navy officer who became rear admiral surface ships...

Monte Rosa..

The Windrush (1954) First Pictures..

Empire Windrush, under the name MV Monte Rosa, was the last of 5 almost-identical Monte-class passenger ships that were built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg between 1924 and 1931 for Hamburg Süd (Hamburg South American Steam Shipping Company), and their use reflected the experience Blohm & Voss had gained by building Diesel-powered U-Boats during World War 1..At the start of World War II, Monte Rosa was allocated for military use..She was used as a barracks ship at Stettin, then as a troopship for the invasion of Norway in April 1940...She was later used as an accommodation and recreational ship attached to the battleship Tirpitz, stationed in the north of Norway, from where Tirpitz and her flotilla attacked the Allied convoys en route to Russia..In November 1942, she was one of several ships used for the deportation of Norwegian Jewish people, carrying a total of 46 people from Norway to Denmark, including the Polish-Norwegian businessman and humanitarian Moritz Rabinowitz..Of the 46 deportees carried on Monte Rosa, all but two ded in Auschwitz concentration camp..At the end of March 1944, Monte Rosa was attacked by Royal Air Force Bristol Beaufighters, of 144 Squadron and 404 Squadron..In June 1944, Max Manus and Gregers Gram, members of the Norwegian resistance movement attaching Limpet mines to Monte Rosa's hull while the ship was in Oslo harbour..In January 1945, the ship was converted into a Hospital ship but was damaged by a mine explosion in February..She received temporary repairs at the Polish port of Gdynia then traveled to Copenhagen, carrying 5000 German refugees, fleeing from the advancing Red Army..In May 1945, she was captured by British forces at Kiel and taken as a prize of war..In 1946, Monte Rosa was assigned to the British Ministry of Transport and converted into a troopship..Monte Rosa was renamed HMT Empire Windrush on 21 January 1947, for use on the Southampton-Hong Kong route, with voyages extended to Kure in Japan after the start of the Korean War..The names were Empire followed by the name of a British river; in this case the River Windrush, a minor tributary of the Thames, flowing from the Cotswold Hills towards Oxford..

In 1948, Empire Windrush, which was en route from Australia to England via the Atlantic, docked in Kingston, Jamaica, to pick servicemen who were on leave..The ship was far from full, and so an opportunistic advertisement was placed in a Jamaican newspaper offering cheap transport on the ship for anybody who wanted to come and work in the UK..The resulting group of 492 immigrants famously began a wave of migration from the Caribbean to the UK when the ship docked at the Port of Tilbury, near London, on 22 June 1948..There were several stowaways..One, Averill Wauchope, was a 25-year-old seamstress who was discovered se7en days out of Kingston..A whip-round was organised on board ship, raising £50, enough for the fare and £4 pocket money for her.. Nancy Cunard, heiress to the Cunard shipping fortune, who was on her way back from Trinidad, took a fancy to her and intended looking after her..The arrivals were temporarily housed in the Clapham South deep shelter in south-west London, less than a mile away from the Coldharbour Lane Employment Exchange in Brixton, where some of the arrivals sought work..In May 1949, Empire Windrush was on a voyage from Gibraltar to Port Said when a fire broke out on board..Although the passengers were placed in the lifeboats, they were not launched and the ship was subsequently towed back to Gibraltar..Windrush set off from Yokohama, Japan, in February 1954 on what proved to be her final voyage..Her passengers including recovering wounded UN veterans of the Korean War, some soldiers from the Duke of Wellington's Regiment wounded at the Third Battle of the Hook in May 1953...However, the voyage was plagued with engine breakdowns and other defects and it took 10 weeks to reach Port Said, from where the ship sailed for the last time..An inquiry later found that an engine-room fire began at around 6:15am, after a fall of soot from the funnel fractured oil-fuel supply pipes..The subsequent explosion and fierce oil-fed fire killed 4 members of the engine-room crew..At 6:23am, the first distress calls were transmitted - 223 Rosa is a large Themistian asteroid..It is classified as a combination of C-type and P-type asteroids - At 6:45am, all attempts to fight the fire were halted and the order was given to abandon ship, who were mostly clad in their nightclothes..All the passengers were saved and the only fatalities were the 4 crew killed in the engine room...The wreck lies at a depth of around (8,500 ft) 2,600 metres..A military nurse was awarded the Royal Red Cross for her role in evacuating the patients under her care...
