Default The Art of Kindness

'So many gods, so many creeds
So many paths that wind and wind
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs'

I never thought of it as an art, more a reflex.

"Practice random kindness and selfless acts of beauty" is one of my fave quotes, whoever said it first. Never managed a selfless act of beauty that I'm aware of, but I try to do my bit on the first part.

Then good for you!

At the end, it will be our acts of kindness (or lack of) that will define us.

"In the midst of global crises such as pollution, wars and famine, kindness may be too easily dismissed as a 'soft' issue, or a luxury to be addressed after the urgent problems are solved. But kindness is the greatest need in all those areas -- kindness toward the environment, toward other nations, toward the needs of people who are suffering. Until we reflect basic kindness in everything we do, our political gestures will be fleeting and fragile.

Simple kindness may be the most vital key to the riddle of how human beings can live with each other in peace, and care properly for this planet we all share."

In the end, it is all that matters.

“Those who make compassion an essential part of their lives find the joy of life. Kindness deepens the spirit and produces rewards that cannot be completely explained in words. It is an experience more powerful than words. To become acquainted with kindness one must be prepared to learn new things and feel new feelings. Kindness is more than a philosophy of the mind. It is a philosophy of the spirit. ”

Compassion brings us to a stop and for a moment we rise above ourselves

“When we are motivated by compassion and wisdom, the results of our actions benefit everyone, not just our individual selves or some immediate convenience. When we are able to recognize and forgive ignorant actions of the past, we gain strength to constructively solve the problems of the present.”

To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places -- and there are so many -- where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.

~Howard Zinn~

I doubt this is true..

An act of kindness will certainly cost you some time, and some effort, possibly some money, or even some pride..

But the rewards far outweigh the cost.

Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver

Time and a bit of effort cost nothing.
Just being a friend to someone. Just being at the end of a phone for someone.
Protecting someone or watching out for them.
Lots of things.

Sometimes it evolves a heck of a lot of time and tremendous amounts of effort.

But my point remains, the rewards far outweigh the costs.
