Default Massive Stone Age Tunnel Network: Scotland-Turkey

Quote:

Evidence of tunnels has been found under hundreds of Neolithic settlements.

That so many tunnels have survived after 12,000 years shows that the original network must have been enormous.

Stone Age man created a massive network of underground tunnels criss-crossing Europe from Scotland to Turkey, a new book on the ancient superhighways has claimed.

German archaeologist Dr Heinrich Kusch said evidence of the tunnels has been found under hundreds of Neolithic settlements all over the continent.

In his book - Secrets Of The Underground Door To An Ancient World - he claims the fact that so many have survived after 12,000 years shows that the original tunnel network must have been enormous.

’In Bavaria in Germany alone we have found 700metres of these underground tunnel networks. In Styria in Austria we have found 350metres,’ he said.

’Across Europe there were thousands of them - from the north in Scotland down to the Mediterranean.

’Most are not much larger than big wormholes - just 70cm wide - just wide enough for a person to wriggle along but nothing else.

’They are interspersed with nooks, at some places it’s larger and there is seating, or storage chambers and rooms.

’They do not all link up but taken together it is a massive underground network.’

Some experts believe the network was a way of protecting man from predators while others believe that some of the linked tunnels were used like motorways are today, for people to travel safely regardless of wars or violence or even weather above ground.

The book notes that chapels were often built by the entrances perhaps because the Church were afraid of the heathen legacy the tunnels might have represented, and wanted to negate their influence.

In some cases writings have been discovered referring to the tunnels seen as a gateway to the underworld.

That will be a good book. When it's published in English.

This was posted a while back, where it was pointed out that:
* the tunnels do not link Scotland to Turkey, despite the title suggesting otherwise
* the tunnel in the photo was clearly worn away by water

Ah ok. I did a quick search but couldn't find the other thread, so mods can delete this one if they like.

logistics . how many calories would it take one person to dig all day and where did they come from ?

humans can do some amazing things with just cooperative muscle power , they do however require fuel to do so .

Quote:
For three months three prisoners, Lieutenant Michael Codner, Flight Lieutenant Eric Williams, and Flight Lieutenant Oliver Philpot, in shifts of one or two diggers at a time, dug over 100 feet (30 m) of tunnel using bowls as shovels and metal rods to poke through the surface of the ground to create air holes

this is just for an example I am sure there are otheres out of there of hand digging under better circumstances.

Just iffing around here say no impediments just as much as you can dig for as long as you can last per shift. so lets iff around better circumstancs and say 4 man digging unimpeded for 6 hours each every day. note that at rest a body can get by on 1000 calories a day , even if they were much shorter they still need too dig. For hard labor reference woodsmen doing handcutting of forests consumed around 5000 calories a day and never gained an ounce.

so back to this it took around 10 slaves producing food for every roman citizen who did not produce food. So to provide for themselves and the 4 diggers , it would take my rough estimate of 80 people working or 640 man hours for every 400 feet of digging over 2 months best case scenario.

My point is that this was a massive expenditure of time and calories from "stone age " people . or factored out at 10 bucks in an hour in todays terms they would be spending around 1200 dollars per foot
