What happened to reggae in the 1980s?
It was taken over by dancehall...

Buju Banton is dancehall, but close to old-fashioned reggae.
Buju Banton – Not an easy road (1995).

Morgan Heritage has made some “old-fashioned” reggae starting in the 1990s.
Morgan Heritage - Tell me how come (2005)

Even in the Netherlands good reggae, dancehall has been made. Postmen started in the 1990s.
Postmen - U wait (1998)

Yes, Morgan Heritage was also the first proper reggae BAND to make a mark in a long time. The genre is dominated by solo artists.

It seems outside of Jamaica there's a greater swing towards 'conscious message music' now rather than dancehall. I listen regularly to dub poet Mutabaruka's show on Irie FM, and he says this. Going by the artists that tour Britain and play festivals, I think he's right.

Hey, some things are improving after all!

I remember how pleased I was when this got into the charts about ten years ago.

And I remember the original - saw him play it live back in the 80s.
