Default 'Hundreds' of boys raped in borstal by guards

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...e-ring-2162990

Claims a ring of violent paedophile prison officers routinely raped hundreds of teenage boys in a borstal are finally being investigated – after an alleged police cover-up.

Senior officers have launched a major inquiry into the horrific sex abuse at Medomsley Detention Centre, County Durham, after complaints were ignored by police or dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

One brave victim, who has waived his right to anonymity, said: “I was raped every single day.”

John McCabe was abused, aged 17, for six months by prison officer Neville Husband.

He said: “I was asked to work in the kitchens. That’s where I met him.

"He told me if I didn’t do what he wanted he’d kill me and nobody would care.

“I thought I was the only boy he abused. Now I know there were more. A lot more. And it wasn’t just him.”

John, of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, added: “I’m fighting for justice for those boys, for myself.

"Too many people have got away with this for far too long.”

Police fear hundreds of young men were assaulted while serving sentences at Medomsley in the 70s and 80s.

Husband was jailed for 12 years at Newcastle crown court for mass rape of boys in his care.

Storeman Lesley Johnson was jailed for six years. Both men are now dead.

Victims say the 2003 probe into Husband did not go far enough and that he was part of a ring of officers involved in systematic abuse.

At least four other prison officers were involved, along with individuals outside the centre, police suspect.

And a police officer is believed to have covered up allegations after one victim walked into Consett Police Station in 1977 to make a statement about abuse.

His claims were ignored and the paperwork for his statement has been destroyed.

The missed chance meant the ring could continue to abuse inmates for years.

John contacted Durham Police in 2009 – after his attacker was released from jail – to say he was also a victim.

But after a police investigation the Crown Prosecution Service took no further action against Husband, saying it was not in the public interest.

John said: “I was devastated.”

But after he contacted his MP police have now opened up the probe.

Det Supt Paul Goundry, in charge of Durham Police child protection, said: “Every avenue will be explored and we’ll do our utmost to bring perpetrators to justice.

"If there were officers who ignored evidence about a paedophile ring at Medomsley then they will be traced and investigated too.”

Some alleged victims have told police they were taken off-site on the pretence of extra curricular activities.

They claim they were dragged into a private room where they were blindfolded and raped by their captors.

And it is alleged that at times there were up to five men present.

Police are now hunting what they believe was a large group of sexual predators who preyed on the vulnerable young men at the prison for nearly 15 years. And John is giving his full backing to police.

He said: “After meeting the authorities I’m completely confident they will carry out a full investigation into what happened at Medomsley because they are now convinced Husband and Johnson were not acting alone.

"They are now taking seriously the claims that rapes and other abuse took place in a number of locations, which until now had not been identified.

“I would urge any former victims to come forward and help police build a case against those evil savages who did this. Please don’t suffer in silence.”

John explained how, if it was not for his MP in Scotland, the case may never have been examined.

He said: “I was really down and my last hope for justice was to approach my local MP, Michael McCann, who’d been a classmate back in East Kilbride.

“Thankfully Michael gave me his full support and with his help I went to the police again. After he campaigned, the case was re-opened.”

Michael, a senior Labour MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow, said: “John and I want to support the Durham Police investigation and call upon anyone who has knowledge of the abuse that took place either inside or outside Medomsley Detention Centre to come forward and tell their story.

“We both know young men attempted to report abuse 30 years ago but were let down by the authorities.

“That will not happen this time and I hope that John McCabe’s bravery in revealing his story will encourage others to come forward.

"Young men like John were detained by the State and then they were abused by agents of the State and others inside and outside Medomsley.

“Only Neville Husband and Lesley Johnson were convicted. The others, and there were others, are still at liberty.

“They must be caught, prosecuted and send to jail for their heinous crimes.”

There are thought to be around 26 victims who have come forward.

Some have been awarded damages by the Ministry of Justice after a civil trial and a case is being pursued in John’s name.

When the Medomsley victims sought compensation after Husband’s conviction, the Home Office used the statute of limitations to avoid payment.

Eventually in 2009 it paid out £512,000 to 12 men, but there are still cases which are waiting to be settled.

But the victims of Medomsley have never received an apology.

When Stephen Byers, then MP for some of the victims, wrote to then Justice Minister, Jack Straw, in 2010, Mr Straw replied: “The terms of the agreement did not include an apology.”

Det Supt Goundry appealed for more victims to speak out.

He said: “What we need now is people to come forward. Anyone who knows anything about what went on at Medomsley.

“You’ll be dealt with sensitively by a trained professional.”

“We believe other victims, for whatever reason, have never come forward.

"It is those people we are now asking to contact us and pass on any information about what took place during their time at Medomsley, at the centre or off-site.

“John has shown great bravery in giving up his right to anonymity and talking about the abuse he suffered.

“I hope he will encourage others to come forward.”

Anyone with information should contact Durham Constabulary on 101.

Evil officer’s threat to kill if I said, ‘No’

Borstal rape victim John McCabe ended up in Medomsley Detention Centre in 1983 after snatching two rings from a pawn shop in Scarborough.

It was during his nine-month sentence he met prison officer Neville Husband who chose John to work with him in the kitchens. Now married with three children, health and safety officer John said: “A few days in, he rubbed himself up against me and I pulled away.”

The next day, Husband cornered the 17-year-old boy and held a knife to his throat. John added: “He said if I refused him again, it would be easy to take me out of the centre and kill me, or for me to be found hanged in my cell.”

The first rape happened a few days later.

“He got me alone in the kitchen and grabbed me by the throat,” said John. “I was passing out and he groped me. He was just too big and too strong to fight off.”

The abuse continued both in jail and off the premises – sometimes with another man present. A man who has never been brought to justice.

John was so depressed he stopped writing to his mum who became worried and called the prison. But evil Husband made John phone and reassure her.

Six months into his sentence, a change in the law meant time served on remand was taken into account and John was released.

He said: “I was terrified – convinced Husband would stop me getting out. A guard said he was taking me to the train station.

“I broke a glass to use as a weapon if he turned up. I paced up and down carriages all the way to Glasgow, expecting to find him.”

John tried to block the abuse from his mind – until one day in 2009 when he saw a news report that Husband had been released from prison.

That is when he went to police to report the rapes.

Default Medomsley

Bill Maloney's film on this...

'Adam Rickwood and the Medomsley Heroes'

http://youtu.be/DOVMEg83Cx8

The whole thing is a complete disgrace... the lads didn't even get an apology... it's good it's being looked at again and that those who thought they'd got away with it get revealed for the evil bastards they are.

There's going to be names in high places but, as usual, they'll be protected I guess...

Neville Husband Timeline

1967 - Whilst training with the prison service Husband was arrested at Portland borstal, Dorset, and charged with the importation of pornography from Europe. The material seized included sado-masochistic images involving teenage boys. Husband admitted showing the material to boys in his care, but the charges were dropped when he said he was conducting research into homosexuality.

A document, signed by the governor of HM Borstal Portland, reads: "The police showed me sample photographs of men in obscene and lewd postures, a signed order form and a signed cheque for 20/- which they allege was sent to an address in Sweden by Officer Husband. "The police interviewed Officer Husband at Portland police station and he admitted sending for a series of photographs, the sample of the series he ordered pictured two naked men, apparently engaged in homosexual activity. Immediately following the police interview Husband saw me privately and informed me of the statement he had made to the police. He told me - and the police - that he was considering writing a book on homosexuality and he had sent for the photos to assist to this end. Officer Husband is a good cook and baker, a married man with one child, buff, hearty and something of a comedian."
http://operationrose.blogspot.co.uk/...velations.html

1969 - Neville Husband was moved from Portland borstal, Dorset, to Medomsley detention centre where he ran the kitchen for 15 years

1977 (June) - a police officer is believed to have covered up allegations after one victim (Kevin Young) walked into Consett Police Station to make a statement about abuse. His claims were ignored and the paperwork for his statement has been destroyed. Kevin Young went to report his abuse the day he left Medomsley, but he said police told him not to pursue the complaint unless he wanted to be returned to the detention centre. Until recently, Durham police denied that he had made a statement on his release, but they now admit that a number of complaints were made by former inmates, "particularly in the 1970s and 1980s".

Kevin Young -"I explained to the officer that I'd just been released from Medomsley, where I'd been subjected to a constant series of assaults by one of the officers and others I couldn't identify. I showed him the marks on my neck where I'd been ligatured the night before. I was told it was a criminal offence to make such allegations against a prison officer because I was on licence. They were basically threatening to take me back to Medomsley, so I scattered pretty quick."

1985 - Police raided Medomsley and a storeman at Medomsley, Leslie Johnson, was charged with abusing an inmate (Mark Park). He told police Husband had ‘given him’ the boy. Park told police that Husband had also abused him, but they took no action. Soon after, Husband was transferred to Frankland. When staff at Medomsley searched his drawers and lockers, they found pornographic material and sex aids.

Leslie Johnson's statement when interviewed in the run-up to Husband's trial states: "After a while, Neville and I became quite good friends. We had a mutual interest in religion." He adds: "We joined the freemasons at Chopwell and got on quite well together. We sometimes went out together with our wives to social functions." Johnston's statement went on: "At one stage I think Neville suggested that he had a lad working in the kitchen who he thought would be suitable to assist me in the stores department. Whilst XXXX was working with me in the stores I developed a sexual relationship with him." He adds: "As a result of this I was convicted at court of indecent assault and subsequently left the prison service." In the same statement, Johnston tells how he knew Husband had abused the same boy and that the pair both visited the victim once he had been released from prison".
http://operationrose.blogspot.co.uk/...velations.html

1985/1986 - forced to leave Medomsley over allegations Husbnd then got a promotion to senior officer at Frankland prison in Durham. Martin Narey was Governor at both Frankland prison and Deerbolt Borstal for young offenders when Husband was employed as a senior officer at Frankland and seconded as an officer at Deerbolt.
Martin Narey went on to become Chief Executive of Dr Barnardos.

http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2012/a...n-centre-crime
Why did Narey never call for a public inquiry? "For the simple reason that, at the time, I knew nothing about it," he says

1987 (May) - After requesting the move himself, Husband was seconded as an officer at Deerbolt in Durham on May 1, 1987. He served one month there before returning to Frankland.

1988 - Medomsley Detention Centre shut down.

1990 - By then back at Frankland, Husband left the prison service. He was recommended for, and received, the Imperial Service Medal, for “serving with diligence and fidelity”.
He went on to run two churches (United Reform Church - Brighton Road Reformed Church in Bensham) in Gateshead, where children in his congregation also complained of abuse, though parents did not pursue the matter.

1999 - Husband quizzed in connection with police operations probing mail order pornography. The case was dropped. When his office was later raided, sex aids were found in his drawers and child pornography on his computer.

2000 - James Millar Reid was governor at Medomsley from 1976 to 1978, which covers the time when Kevin Young was abused. At the beginning of September 2000, he was visited by detectives from Durham, who were investigating Husband. A few days after the visit, he went missing and his body was found in a wood in Stelling Minnis, near Canterbury.

2001 (Feb) - The inquest on James Millar Reid's death was held and an open verdict was returned. The cause of death recorded was "Unascertainable" as the body was badly decomposed.

2001 (Sept) Neville Husband arrested on child abuse charges relating to Medomsley.
More than 5,000 images almost exclusively of teenage gay sex were retrieved from two computers in his church study and at his home. Explicit videos were also taken from his house.

"Spokesman for the United Reformed Church David Lawrence said: "Mr Husband will remain suspended while the church's disciplinary procedures, held in abeyance until the result of the trial was known, take their course. We are deeply shocked and saddened by the events which have come to light and our sympathies and prayers go out to those who have suffered."

2003 (Feb) - Husband was finally convicted of sexually abusing five young male inmates between 1974 and 1984 (10 indecent assault charges and a further serious sex offence relating to five males), after pleading not guilty. Sentenced to eight years in prison

At the trial staff said governors forbade search teams from entering the kitchen (where later, sex aids would be found) and allowed Husband to take boys to his house, where they were blindfolded, ligatured and abused by other men.

2005 (Sept) -Husband's sentence was increased to 10 years after new victims came forward and he admitted to attacks on four more boys.
“This is the worst case of sexual and physical abuse I have had to deal with in my 17 years as a Home Office physiologist ,dealing with some of the most violent and dangerous sex offenders in our prisons “
Dr.Elie Godsi Leeds court 9th November 2005

2007 (Aug) - Crown Prosecution Service announced it would not be charging Husband over an allegation that he went on to abuse a boy in Deerbolt because it would "not be in the public interest".
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/.../c...eacher-1502684

2009 - Compensation of £512,000 paid out to 12 men, but there are still cases which are waiting to be settled. The Home Office tried to get the case thrown out, and their plea was that too much time has passed since the crimes occurred. The Judge (Judge Cockroft) at Leeds Crown Court rejected the Home Office’s plea of limitation. The Home Office appealed. Even when the law lords ruled in favour of the claimants, the Home Office refused to back down and declared its intention of fighting the claim in court.

2009 (Oct) - Husband was released from prison after serving just over half his sentence

2010 (Aug) - Husband dies

2010 - Stephen Byers, then MP for some of the victims, wrote to then Justice Minister, Jack Straw. Mr Straw replied: “The terms of the agreement did not include an apology.”

I am sure all over this world there has been just as bad places for people that any death camp reports from ww2.

Imagine what absolute trash those guards were.

Pure ffing scum that ruin a system that is supposed to there to sort out problems in people.

Why the watchers need to be watched as much as everyone else.

Just imagine those vile guards where probably applauded by society as being great humans, when they were pure filth.

Thanks beechtree.

I watched the Medomsley Heroes documentary the other week- harrowing. What I haven't seen reported that was mentioned in the doc was that one of the survivors believed the governor who committed suicide was one of the abusers himself.

Did anyone go to the link posted yesterday on the headlines page?

http://spotlightonabuse.wordpress.co.../#comment-3679

All you need do is copy and paste it into an e-mail to your mp and fill in your and your mp's name, the letter is well written and calls for open investigations into repeated cover-ups.
If enough people do it it could really set the cat among the pigeons.

Difficult to know. Here's some positive feedback from someone involved in the film:

Quote:
“I totally agree with the film and how it comes across,” she said.
... “Bill was great to work with, he was very supportive and has done a great job on the film.”

Shows you why everything should be watched over, and transparent.

Amazing how humans cannot decide by themselves what is right. If they are left alone, they want to do anything and destroy anyone they want.

Watchers watching the watchers.

I am still amazed at how much of society would do absolutely horrendous things to others if they think they get away with it.

Thats why i am for them watching everyone all the time. Just imagine all the stuff humans have did over the years, and those victims had no voice, as there persecutors where just like these people, in power positions and they knew they would get away with it.

Thats why i believe that govs have run some of the most horrendous programs probably that we will never know about, as all the victims where killed. I would not be surprised if programs existed under societies very eyes, and loads of times people just looked the other way.
