WHERE DID JILL GO AFTER LEAVING SHOP?
The Sun 05-03-99

On the 28th April 1999 the journalist, TV presenter and newsreader Jill Dando was shot on the doorstep of her London home. A year after the murder a local man, Barry George, was arrested, charged and tried for the murder. He was convicted but, at a third appeal in 2007, he was allowed a re-trial and was acquitted for lack of evidence. No one else has ever been arrested for the murder.

According the BBC Onthisday site – 19th June 1982
The body of a top Italian banker has been found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London. Known as God's banker for his links with the Vatican, 62-year-old Roberto Calvi was the chairman of Banco Ambrosiano in Milan and a central figure in a complex web of international fraud and intrigue.

He had been missing for the last nine days before his body was discovered by a passer-by hanging from scaffolding on a riverside walk under the bridge.
Police are treating the death as suicide.

It was later revealed that Roberto Calvi was found with five bricks in his pockets and had in his possession about $14,000 in three different currencies.
On 23 July an inquest jury returned a verdict of suicide. This was overturned in 1983 when a second inquest delivered an open verdict on the death.
In October 2002 forensic experts appointed by Italian judges concluded that the banker had been murdered.

They said his neck showed no evidence of the injuries usually associated with death by hanging and his hands had never touched the stones found in the pockets of his clothes. American Archbishop Paul Marcinkus was sought for questioning but was granted immunity as a Vatican employee. He retired in 1990 and died in 2006.

In October 2005 five people went on trial in Rome. They were Sardinian financier Flavio Carboni, his former girlfriend Manuela Kleinszig, Roman entrepreneur Ernesto Diotallevi, Calvi's former bodyguard, Silvano Vittor and convicted Cosa Nostra treasurer Pippo Calo.

They were acquitted in June 2007.

ROUGUE COP GETS 20 YEARS
The Sun 04-03-82

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, James Prior, quashed Charles McCormick’s conviction in 1984. McCormick may or may not have been working for British Military Intelligence at the time of his alleged bank robberies.

In 2009 the 72 year-old Charles McCormick was re-arrested for the murder of Sergeant Joe Campbell a fellow RUC member who was shot in 1977. I can’t find anything online to say whether or not there has been a second trial.

Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, was the Duke of Edinburgh’s uncle and second cousin once removed to Elizabeth II.

He joined the Royal Navy in 1913 and during a long career was, at one time or another, Chief of Combined Operations, Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia Command, Commander, cruiser squadron, Mediterranean Fleet, Fourth Sea Lord, Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Fleet, First Sea Lord,Chief of the Defence Staff and Admiral of the Fleet.

He was the last Viceroy of India (1947) and the first Governor-General of the Union of India.

He had a summer retreat in County Sligo, Ireland and was holidaying there in August 1979. On the 27th he went fishing with his daughter, her husband and their twin sons and her mother-in-law on his 30’ boat. The IRA had planted a bomb aboard and detonated it by wireless during the trip. Louis Mountbatten, one of his grandsons and a crew member were killed. His daughter’s mother-in-law died later in hospital.

FAR-RIGHT LINKED TO GROUP THAT NAMED THE WRONG MEN
International Express 08-08-00

News of the World’s Name and Shame Campaign, which encouraged the revealing of the names and addresses of sex offenders to the public and led to a lynch mob mentality. A classic example of a newspaper-provoked ‘moral panic’ that even led to a paediatrician being targeted by a mob of ignorant ‘concerned citizens’.

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet were staying at the Grand Hotel in Brighton for the 1984 Conservative Party conference when a bomb, planted by IRA member Patrick Magee, exploded. It killed 5 people including Anthony Berry M P and badly damaged the front of the hotel.

Patrick Magee was found guilty on eight counts including the five murders and was sentenced to a minimum of 35 years in prison. Controversially he was released in 1999 as part of the Good Friday Agreement.
