The 2011 Helmand Province incident was the killing, on 15 September 2011, of an injured Taliban insurgent by Royal Marines..The incident took place in Helmand Province during Operation Herrick 14, part of the British effort in the War in Afghanistan.. Lightbulb Gene va Code

Red Cross poster from the First World War...
Quote:
The Geneva Conventions comprise four treaties, and 3 additional protocols, that establish the standards of international law for the humanitarian treatment of war.. The singular term Geneva Convention usually denotes the agreements of 1949, negotiated in the aftermath of theSecond World War (1939–45), which updated the terms of the first 3 treaties (1864, 1906, 1929), and added a fourth.. The Geneva Conventions extensively defined the basic rights of wartime prisoners (civilians and military personnel); established protections for the wounded; and established protections for the civilians in and around a war-zone..Conventions are about people in war, the articles do not address warfare proper—the use of weapons of war—which is the subject of the Hague Conventions..

The Swiss businessman Henry Dunant visited wounded soldiers after the Battle of Solferino in 1859.. He was shocked by the lack of facilities, personnel, and medical aid available to help these soldiers.. As a result, he published his book, Memoir of the Solferino, in 1862, on the horrors of war..The former proposal led to the establishment of the Red Cross in Geneva..The 10 articles of this first treaty were initially adopted on August 22, 1864 by twelve nations..

Dunant was born in Geneva, Switzerland, the first son of businessman Jean-Jacques Dunant and Antoinette Dunant-Colladon.. His family was devoutly Calvinist and had significant influence in Geneva society.. His parents stressed the value of social work, and his father was active helping orphans and parolees, while his mother worked with the sick and poor. His father worked in a prison and an orphanage..Leading divines, either Calvinist or those sympathetic to Calvinism, settled in England (Martin Bucer, Peter Martyr, and Jan Łaski) and Scotland (John Knox).. During the English Civil War, the Calvinistic Puritans produced the Westminster Confession, which became the confessional standard for Presbyterians in the English-speaking world. Having established itself in Europe, the movement continued to spread to other parts of the world including North America, South Africa, and Korea..In Switzerland some cantons are still Reformed and some are Catholic...

A View To A Kill 's horse race..

In 1853, Dunant visited Algeria, Tunisia, and Sicily, on assignment with a company devoted to the "colonies of Setif".. In 1856, he created a business to operate in foreign colonies, and, after being granted a land concession by French-occupied Algeria, a corn-growing and trading company.. Dunant wrote a flattering book full of praise for Napoleon III with the intention to present it to the emperor, and then traveled to Solferino to meet with him personally..In October 1863, 14 states took part in a meeting in Geneva organized by the committee to discuss the improvement of care for wounded soldiers.. He was especially active in writing about women's rights, and in 1897 facilitated the founding of a "Green Cross" women's organization whose only section was briefly active in Brussels...

Henry Dunant at Solferino..

The American Red Cross Mission (or perhaps we should call it the Wall Street Mission to Russia) also employed three Russian-English interpreters: Captain Ilovaisky, a Russian Bolshevik; Boris Reinstein, a Russian-American, later secretary to Lenin, and the head of Karl Radek's Bureau of International Revolutionary Propaganda, which also employed John Reed and Albert Rhys Williams; and Alexander Gumberg (alias Berg, real name Michael Gruzenberg), who was a brother of Zorin, a Bolshevik minister.. Gumberg was also the chief Bolshevik agent in Scandinavia.. He later became a confidential assistant to Floyd Odlum of Atlas Corporation in the United States as well as an adviser to Reeve Schley, a vice president of the Chase Bank...

In his continued pursuit and advocacy of his ideas, he further neglected his personal situation and income, falling further in debt and being shunned by his acquaintances..In Heiden, he met the young teacher Wilhelm Sonderegger and his wife Susanna; they encouraged him to record his life experiences.. In 1935, their son René published a compilation of letters from Dunant to his father..His birthday, 8 May, is celebrated as the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day..In honour of Henry Dunant, the second highest peak in Switzerland was renamed to Dunantspitze (Peak Dunant) by Swiss Federal President Didier Burkhalter on 6 October 2014..

What does it actually mean to be Rh negative or positive? At its simplest, you are Rh positive if you possess the D antigen, a type of protein, on the external surface of your red cells.. If you do not have this D antigen, you are Rh negative..Another Reformed distinctive present in these theologians was their denial of the bodily presence of Christ in the Lord's supper...
Its a shame the armament manufacturers, the Taliban and the Jihad Johnny characters of this world do not abide by such conventions..

The Movie is based on Blatty's novel, which was itself a reworking of the novel, first published in 1966 as Twinkle, Twinkle, "Killer" Kane!..The initial 66 publication of the novel featured an exclamation mark at the end of the title, while all subsequent publications saw it removed..In the 1970s, a large castle is used by the US Government as an insane asylum for military personnel.. Among the many patients there is a former astronaut, Billy Cutshaw, who aborted a moon launch and was dragged screaming from the capsule, suffering from an apparent mental breakdown..Colonel Kane, a former member of a US Marine Corps special unit, arrives at the castle to take over the treatment of the patients.. He meets Colonel Fell, who helps Kane acclimate himself to the eccentricities of the patients.. Kane pays special attention to Cutshaw, repeatedly asking him why he did not want to go to the moon.. Cutshaw refuses to answer but instead gives him a St. Christopher medal..Blatty was promised complete creative control over the production by PepsiCo with only one stipulation: that the film had to be shot in Hungary..Release dates February 29, 1980.."I am a Buddhist..In case of emergency, call a lama"..

RumpelStiltSkin..

According to the legendary account of his life Christopher was initially called Reprobus..He was a Canaanite, 5 cubits (2.3 m) tall..While serving the king of Canaan, he took it into his head to go and serve "the greatest king there was"..The hermit then suggested that because of his size and strength Christopher could serve Christ by assisting people to cross a dangerous river, where they were perishing in the attempt.. The hermit promised that this service would be pleasing to Christ..After Christopher had performed this service for some time, a little child asked him to take him across the river.. During the crossing, the river became swollen and the child seemed as heavy as lead, so much that Christopher could scarcely carry him and found himself in great difficulty.. When he finally reached the other side, he said to the child: "You have put me in the greatest danger.. I do not think the whole world could have been as heavy on my shoulders as you were".. The child replied: "You had on your shoulders not only the whole world but Him who made it.. I am Christ your king, whom you are serving by this work"..Christopher later visited Lycia and there comforted the Christians who were being martyred..The king ordered him to be killed.. Various attempts failed, but finally Christopher was beheaded..The Eastern Orthodox Church venerates Christopher of Lycea with a Feast Day on May 9..The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 25 July..Medallions with St. Christopher's name and image are commonly worn as pendants, especially by travelers, to show devotion and as a request for his blessing...

Commando on a toggle rope bridge..
Quote:
The Commando Memorial dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during Second World War, is located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west of Spean Bridge, at the junction of the A82 and the B8004.. It overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle...The Clan Cameron Museum is located in a cottage on the castle's grounds.. Displays include the clan's legends, chiefs, slogans, history, clan lands in Lochaber, and notable clansmen..Other exhibits include the castle and estate's history, the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, and Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie"...

The Commando Memorial...

A toggle rope was part of the standard equipment of British commandos and the Parachute Regiment during World War II.. It was 6 feet (1.8 m) long, and had a toggle at one end in a tightly fitting eye splice, with a larger eye at the other end.. This enabled them to be fastened together to create an ersatz rope ladder, or to secure around a bundle for hauling, among other uses...

The Good The Bad and The Ugly bridge scene..

The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders regiment was formed at the height of the French Revolutionary Wars..In 1808 the 79th Foot moved to Portugal, moving to Spain in the following year and participating in several major battles of the Peninsular War..The regiment's lineage is now continued by the 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland..Achnacarry Castle is the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan Cameron, located at Achnacarry, about 15 mi (24 km) northeast of Fort William, Scotland near the foot of Loch Arkaig..The original castle was built around 1655 and destroyed after the Battle of Culloden in 1746; a new house in Scottish baronial style was built nearby in 1802..Sir Ewen Cameron wanted a "more convenient" house, which was further removed from the Clan Mackintosh, Clan Campbell and Oliver Cromwell's garrison at Inverlochy Castle..On May 28, 1746, Donald watched as men from Bligh's Regiment under the command of Lt-Col Edward Cornwallis and an Independent Company of Munros, commanded by George Munro, 1st of Culcairn, burned Achnacarry to the ground.. Many valued relics and personal possessions were relocated beforehand, but the great fir-planked "Old" Achnacarry was left in ashes..

Lochaber is one of the 16 ward management areas of the Highland Council of Scotland and one of eight former local government districts of the two-tier Highland region..The Ross, Skye and Lochaber area consists of six out of the 22 wards of the council area..According to legend a glaistig, an evil woman-goat hybrid, once lived in the area..The name is evidently cognate with the Manx "glashtin", and is similar to the "sacbaun" of Galloway..She is also known as "Green Jean"..Some stories have her luring men to her lair via either song or dance, where she would then drink their blood.. Other such tales have her casting stones in the path of travellers or throwing them off course..She might either be benign, watching over houses and looking after the weak mind, or appear as a vengeful ghost.. In some tales she was murdered in a green dress, and then stuffed unceremoniously up the chimney by a servant..It is said that her footsteps can still be heard as she walks the castle in sadness...

Are You Tough Enough? - BBC action..

The endurance addicts are put their their paces when they are told to swim 20 laps in full gear without stopping after 4 days of gruelling physical challenges - Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with events in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly..Evidence of recreational swimming in prehistoric times has been found, with the earliest evidence dating to Stone Age paintings from around 10000 years ago..Weight belts are often made of tough nylon webbing, but other materials such as rubber can be used...

Bravo Two Zero Nine..

On the first day of the PRMC, potential recruits begin their assessments at Bam.. They undertake the 3 Mile Run and Gym Tests..After Gym tests there is a short swimming assessment..The 3-mile run consists of a 1.5-miles-out run as a squad followed by 1.5-mile back individual best effort..Day 1 and involves you jumping off the high diving board (3m) in normal swimming kit and swimming a maximum of 4 lengths (approx 100m) of breast stroke.. You must complete at least 1 length.. If you complete 1 but less than 4 lengths you will be graded as a WEAK SWIMMER and you will be advised to improve before joining and could delay your start date for joining recruit training..Throughout this evening, the expression "You're only as strong as your weakest man" is very much in force, meaning there are consequences for the entire squad if a few candidates do not do as they are told...

The drowned, 1867..

Once a candidate has successfully passed the PRMC, he will be issued with a pair of boots and socks..Autopsies on drowned persons show no difference between drownings in salt water and fresh water.. After death, rigor mortis will set in and remains for about 2 days, depending on many factors, including water temperature..The acronym RID was originated by Frank Pia to summarize important reasons why lifeguards may be unaware of a drowning..It is the 3rd leading cause of darth from unintentional trauma after traffic injuries and falls..In Europe, drowning was used as capital punishment.. In fact, during the Middle Ages, a sentence of death was read using the words "cum fossa et furca", or "with drowning-pit and gallows".. Furthermore, drowning was used as a way to determine if a woman was a witch...

Simon Peter had a sword...

Huge oil and gas reserves are being uncovered by melting polar ice-caps, placing greater strategic importance on the Arctic region...During the 1950s the Royal Marine Cliff Assault Wing formed to train Marines in rock climbing and cliff assault techniques.. Elite training of Cliff Leaders in the late 1950s required rocky landings from various small craft (kayaks, Zodiacs and other motorized assault craft) often in heavy seas onto the Cornish coast, and rapid tactical ascents and descent of the vertical faces..This skill set was necessary for exposing all trainees during the last week of the commando (green beret) course...These demonstrations were discontinued after Captain Antony Easterbrook, a 31-year-old member of the Cadre, fell to his darth during a display in Madison Square Garden in 1960, a swimmer canoeist who specialised as a PT instructor..By nature I think I’m adventurous, and I know I’ve always been disobedient...

Ice Breaking Warfare..

The Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre featured in the 1985 BBC TV documentary series Behind the Lines..During the Falklands War the staff and students formed 2 patrol groups and were engaged in direct action alongside other Brigade assets, such as the Skirmish at Top Malo House..Captain Rod Boswell of the Royal Marines Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre and 18 of his men undertook the task which originated from a report made on 27 May by a four-man patrol from the Cadre sited in an observation post (OP) on Bull Hill..The four man patrol had established the OP on 21 May as one of a number of small reconnaissance teams who were the eyes and ears of the Brigade...

The Prophecy - Gabriel & Simon..

The helicopters flew off in the direction of Mount Simon; however, the sergeant commanding the team believed that the aircraft had probably dropped off Argentine Special Forces on the lower slopes of Mount Simon..On the evening of 30 May Captain Boswell received a message from one of the patrols, that they had just seen 2 Argentine UH-1 helicopters deliver a patrol of about 16 men at Top Malo House, a deserted shepherd's house just 400 metres (440 yd) from their position..2 hours after dawn Boswell ordered his men to fix bayonets and then commenced the engagement by firing a green flare into the air..After the battle Captain Boswell's comment to the Argentine Commander was: "Never in a house..."..Unknown to the British the entire assault had been watched by members of Red de Observadores del Aire or ROA on Malo Hill and Mount Simon..The slopes of Wickham Heights feature numerous stone runs, some of them extending up to 5 km..They form the "spine" of the East Falkland, north of Lafonia..Charles Darwin surveyed the area's wildlife during his now-famous voyage on HMS Beagle..Other settlements include Port King, Egg Harbour and the abandoned Hope Place..In the 21st century, Lafonia has seen gold prospecting by Falkland Gold and Minerals Ltd..The area is now home to an Argentine Military Cemetery..

One of the key figures involved in the unit's organisation was Ian Fleming..They often worked closely with the Intelligence Corps' Field Security sections..The unit went on to serve in the Greek Islands, Norway, PanTelleria, Sicily, Italy, and Corsica..

Danny Dyer's Deadliest Men + Camping out..

Age of Horus follows the exploits of Corporal Rains as he is inducted into the newly formed 30 Commando unit in World War II after being freed from a war prison for cowardice and striking an officer during operations in France.. Rains and the rest of the platoon are put through intensive training under the watchful eye of Major Jones, where their skills and endurance are pushed to the limit as they prepare for their first highly classified and dangerous mission: to parachute into occupied Norway and capture new radar technology from the Germans which could change the outcome of the war...

Lightbulb George V

Coronation portrait by Sir Luke Fildes, 1911..
Quote:
George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert; 3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) was King of the UK and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 until his death in 1936..He was the second son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), and the grandson of the reigning British monarch, Queen Victoria.. From the time of his birth, he was third in the line of succession behind his father and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale.. From 1877 to 1891, George served in the Royal Navy, until the unexpected death of his elder brother in early 1892 put him directly in line for the throne.. On the death of his grandmother in 1901, George's father became King-Emperor of the British Empire, and George was created Prince of Wales.. He succeeded his father in 1910...

King George V Visit To Hull (1914-18)..

He was the only Emperor of India to be present at his own Delhi Durbar..Knight of the Order of the Elephant (Denmark), 11 October 1885..The badge of the confraternity showed the Virgin Mary holding her Son within a crescent moon and surrounded with the rays of the sun, and was hung from a collar of links in the form of elephants much like the present collar of the Order.. After the Reformation in 1536 the confraternity died out, but a badge in the form of an elephant with his profile on its right side was still awarded by Frederick II...The order was instituted in its current form on 1 December 1693 by King Christian V as having only one class consisting of only 30 noble knights in addition to the Grand Master (i.e., the king) and his sons..The statutes of the order were amended in 1958 by a Royal Ordinance so that both men and women could be members of the order..A howdah, or houdah ( हौदा), derived from the Arabic هودج (hawdaj), that means "bed carried by a camel", also known as hathi howdah (हाथी हौदा), is a carriage which is positioned on the back of an elephant, or occasionally some other animal such as camels, used most often in the past to carry wealthy people or for use in hunting or warfare..The Museum at the Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, Rajasthan has a gallery of royal Howdahs.."The Elephant", as locally abbreviated, consists of major traffic junctions connected by a short road called Elephant and Castle, part of the A3..Traffic runs to and from the south-east of England along the A2 (New Kent Road and Old Kent Road), the south of England on the A3, to the West End via St George's Road..The name "Elephant and Castle" is derived from a coaching inn..Knight of the Order of the Seraphim (Sweden), 14 June 1905..I told him not to mention the elephant..Beverley Postcode district HU17..

A 17th century map by Wenceslaus Hollar..

1 January 1901: Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Marine Forces..As Duke of York, George's arms were the royal arms, with an inescutcheon of the arms of Saxony, all differenced with a label of three points argent, the centre point bearing an anchor azure. As Prince of Wales the centre label lost its anchor..Colonel-in-Chief is a ceremonial position in a military regiment..The Norwegian Army has taken a more whimsical approach to the position, appointing the penguin Sir Nils Olav as a Colonel-in-Chief ..The Order of the Red Eagle (German: Roter Adlerorden) was an order of chivalry of the Kingdom of Prussia..26 January 1902: Colonel-in-Chief of the Rhenish Cuirassier Regiment "Count Geßler" No. 8 (Prussia)...

Seabourne trade at the port can be traced to at least the 13th century, originally conducted mainly at the outfall of the River Hull, known as The Haven..The first dock east of the river, Victoria Dock, was opened 1850.. Docks in along the banks of the Humber to the west were begun in 1862 with the construction of the West Dock (later Albert Dock), the William Wright extension opened 1880, and a dock further west, St. Andrew's Dock opened in 1883.. In 1885 a new eastern dock was built, Alexandra Dock, connected to a new railway line constructed by the same company - the Hull Barnsley & West Riding Junction Railway and Dock Company.. In 1914, King George Dock, was built jointly by the competing railway companies the Hull and Barnsley company and the North Eastern Railway; this was extended in 1969 by the Queen Elizabeth Dock extension.. As of 2016 Alexandra is being modernised for use in wind farm construction, with a factory, and estuary side quay under construction - the development known as Green Port Hull..The town of Hull was founded late in the 12th century..The monks of Meaux Abbey needed a port where the wool from their estates could be exported...

An important event in the history of Hull as a port was its acquisition by king (Edward I).. In 1297, it then became the only port from which goods could be exported overseas from the county of Yorkshire.. Thus in the 13th and 14th centuries Hull was a major English port for the export of wool, much of it to Flanders, with wine being a major import..During this period the River Hull was made navigable as far as the then important town of Beverley.. In 1773 the Hull Corporation, Hull Trinity House and Hull merchants formed the "Dock Company"..Three docks (known as the Town Docks) which followed the path of the town walls were constructed by the company..In 1885 Alexandra Dock opened, which was owned and operated by the Hull Barnsley & West Riding Junction Railway and Dock Company..The Victoria Dock In 1863 was expanded eastwards by 8 acres (3.2 ha)..Albert Dock..A small wharf was built outside the main dock for shipping activities of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway..William Wright Dock opened in 1880..St. Andrews's Dock was constructed at the same time as the extension of Albert Dock opened in 1883 extended by about 10 acres..It was originally to be used for coal handling but was used entirely for the fishing industry taken over by the North Eastern Railway, with work beginning in 1894..The Alexandra Dock was built between 1881 and 1885 on land reclaimed from the Humber officially opened 16 July 1885, named after Alexandra, Princess of Wales..The entrance lock was 550 ft (170 m) long and 85 ft (26 m) wide.. The extension was originally fitted for the handling of coal and pit props, with 4 coal hoists..A pier onto the Humber Estuary (West Wharf) was added in 1911..The eastern pier was a wooden structure, from 1920s known as the Minerva Pier..

The Dock Company and North Eastern Railway were legally amalgamated in 1893..The new dock was opened in 1914 as the King George Dock..The 1919 grain silo was demolished in 2010/11.. As part of the development the 'Dead Bod' graffiti, painted by Captain Len (Pongo) Rood in the 1960s on one of the West Wharf buildings, which had become a landmark to Humber shipping, was removed and saved for posterity..In addition to the dry docks in King George, Alexandra, and William Wright docks there were dry docks on the sides of the River Hull..To the west of Victoria were the "L" shaped piers enclosing the Humber Dock basin..In 1837 the packet steamer Union exploded in the Humber Dock basin, resulting in the darth of over 20 people including bystanders on the dock side, and a large number of injuries, the vessel itself being sunk by the explosion...In 1921 a R38-class airship broke apart whilst performing a sharp turn near to Victoria Pier, the air-vessel then exploded, and the flaming wreckage crashed into the Humber near to the Victoria Pier killing 45 of the 49 on board..During the Second World War the Hull docks were actively targeted; in addition to mines in the Humber, the docks in Hull were bombed..27 churches, 14 schools or hospitals, 42 pubs and 8 cinemas ruined..Major fires destroyed the fish market at St. Andrews Dock in 1929, and a general cargo shed at Humber Dock in 1951..In 1970 a vehicle carrying liquefied gas struck the top of a road subway leading to the William Wright and St. Andrew's docks, resulting in a gas explosion and fire.. The incident caused 2 da'ats and 17 serious injuries..The Hull Trinity House, locally known as Trinity House is a seafaring organization consisting of a charity for seafarers, a school, and a guild of mariners...

It is intensely irritating!.When you asked if I knew who was the killer..I knew, but had to make sure.. It did not take long..He had a hard time at school, and disliked blood and violence - a trait most un-English..But he had a sympathetic character, and soon discovered how easy it was to make use of it.. By understanding people, he could penetrate their innermost thoughts..Do you always paint men?..https://forum.davidicke.com/showpost...3&postcount=27

The painter's mussel..
Quote:
scientific name Unio pictorum, is a species of medium-sized freshwater mussel, an aquatic bivalve mollusk in the family Unionidae, the river mussels..Bivalvia, in previous centuries referred to as the Lamellibranchiata and Pelecypoda, is a class of marine and freshwater molluscs that have laterally compressed bodies enclosed by a shell consisting of 2 hinged parts.. The freshwater bivalves include se7en families, the largest of which are the Unionidae, with about 700 species...

Smell of a Woman..

This species lives in Europe.. It is called the "painter's mussel" because the shell was historically used as a conveniently sized and shaped receptacle for holding artist's paint..What the Picts called themselves is unknown..The Latin word Picti first occurs in a panegyric written by Eumenius in AD 297 and is taken to mean "painted or tattooed people" (from Latin pingere "to paint"; pictus, "painted", cf. Greek "πυκτίς" pyktis, "picture")..A Pictish confederation was formed in Late Antiquity from a number of tribes, how and why is not known.. Some scholars have speculated that it was partly in response to the growth of the Roman Empire..The Romans generally confined the panegyric to the living, and reserved the funeral oration exclusively for the da'at..XII Panegyrici Latini or Twelve Latin Panegyrics is the conventional title of a collection of 12 ancient Roman panegyric orations, meanwhile, contains a direct allusion to Caesar's Bellum civile..In biology, a phylum ( plural: phyla) is a taxonomic rank below kingdom and above class..The kingdom Animalia contains approximately 35 phyla, Plantae contains 12, and Fungi contains 7...

Lightbulb Marathon Man

Interview With Captain David Seath ..
Quote:
Captain David Seath, 31, originally from Fife in Scotland, was serving with 29 Commando Royal Artillery and was closely linked to many military charities.. He died after suffering a suspected heart attack whilst taking part in the London Marathon..Seath, 31, was rushed to hospital after suffering a heart attack as he neared the 23-mile mark..At the end of last year Forces TV filmed him working with the char ity Scottish War Blinded, where he was getting an art lesson in how to paint with a visual impairment..He went for a little walk!..

Pals of Captain Seath are set to walk the final 3 miles in his memory..

Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer characterized the effect of the culture industry as "psychoanalysis in reverse".. Their analysis began with the dialectic which operated in Germany when heirs of the Romantic movement became seekers of "Strength through Joy", only to have their movement co-opted by a combination of the mass media and National Socialism.. A modern example begins with the "fitness and jogging" boom in the US in the 1970s.. The "running craze" at the Boston Marathon and in California, dialectically, was the thesis that one did not have to be "Rocky" in a sweaty gym to be physically fit, and that body acceptance was the key to effective aerobic training..The culture industry responded to the thesis with major advertising campaigns from Calvin Klein and others, using images featuring exceptionally toned models.. People compared themselves to these models, which created a sense of competition, and many high school students avoid jogging because of the resultant body shame..The culture industry mass-produces standardized material.. This would not be dangerous if the material was meaningless, but it frequently offers and reinforces ideals and norms representing implied criticism of those who fail to match up..Hence, if the peer group buys, all those who cannot afford the products will feel additional unhappiness and frustration until they eventually join the group.. Thus, sometimes the process of advocacy for the one outcome really intends to produce the opposite outcome as the motivation for purchase..Stuck in the desert for 2 months, and was it hot!.That tomb..

A Royal Marine and a Woman soldier have died from injuries received while on patrol in Afghanistan..The Royal Marine, from 40 Commando and the soldier, from 3 Medical Regiment, were on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province when they were killed, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said..Their families have been informed..Do you have to open graves to find girls to fall in love with?..

Question Mutiny or Sabotage

Crew of HMS Affray..
Quote:
HMS Affray, a British Amphion-class submarine, was the last Royal Navy submarine to be lost at sea, on 16 April 1951, with the loss of 75 lives.. All vessels of her class were given names beginning with the letter A; she was the only ship of the Royal Navy to be named after a particularly noisy and disorderly fight..Affray was built in the closing stages of the Second World War.. She was one of 16 submarines of her class which were originally designed for use in the Pacific Ocean against Japan..Some elements of her design were taken from captured Nazi German U-boats.. Her Modular style of manufacture and all-welded hull were unique at the time..

Laid down: 16 January 1944..

On 16 April 1951, Affray set out on a simulated war mission called Exercise Spring Train with a reduced crew of 50 from 61..They were joined by one sergeant, one corporal, and 2 marines from the Special Boat Service; a commander (Engineer), a naval instructor, se7en lieutenants in the engineering branch, and 13 sub-lieutenants..This made her complement 75 in total..She also had 10 torpedo tubes which made her & her class some of the most formidable submarines in the world at that time..Her captain's orders were unusually flexible: the Marines were to be dropped off somewhere along the south west coast of England—the captain told the Admiralty he had chosen an isolated beach in Cornwall—come ashore and return under the cover of darkness..The exercise was expected to continue until Affray was due to return to base on 23 April for essential defect repairs including a leak in a battery tank..When she missed her 0800 report due the next day she was declared missing and an immediate search Begum..Cabotage originally meant simply coasting trade, from the French caboter, to travel by the coast..

The Search For 'affray' (1951)..Off the Isle of Wight...

On 14 June the primary search vessel HMS Loch Insh made a sonar contact near Hurds Deep, a deep underwater valley in the English Channel..About 6 MeV of the fission-input energy is supplied by the simple binding of an extra neutron to the heavy nucleus via the strong force; however, in many fissionable isotopes, this amount of energy is not enough for fission..Uranium-238, for example, has a near-zero fission cross section for neutrons of less than one MeV energy..Examples of fissile isotopes are U-235 and plutonium-239..Just before 9pm, Blackburn sent a signal to base..It read: ‘Diving at 2115 in position 5010N, 0145W for Exercise Training Spring’.. It was the last signal ever received from Affray..Typical fission events release about two hundred million eV (200 MeV) of energy for each fission event..Almost half a century after the loss, Innes McCartney, an experienced trimix diver with a passion for sunken submarines, obtained the position of Affray from the Ministry of Defence and dived to the sunken submarine..When a uranium nucleus fissions into 2 daughter nuclei fragments, about 0.1 percent of the mass of the uranium nucleus appears as the fission energy of ~200 MeV..She was 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Alderney, a lot closer to France than England..To this day, the crew are entombed in the submarine on the northern edge of Hurd's Deep...

Gulf War (194 of 374) - Desert Storm..

Broadcast (New Zealand): 31st January, 1991...

Are we friends, Ben?. I wanna believe we were friends - Born in Ashford, Kent..

Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, who had already tried and failed to draw Coalition troops into costly ground engagements by shelling Saudi positions and oil storage tanks and firing Scud surface-to-surface missiles at Israel, ordered the invasion of Saudi Arabia from southern Kuwait..During the buildup of forces, the US had built observation posts along the Kuwaiti-Saudi border to gather intelligence on Iraqi forces..These were manned by US Navy SEALs, Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance and Army Special Forces personnel..Observation post 8 was farthest to the east, on the coast, and another se7en observation posts were positioned each 20 km (12 mi) until the end of the "heel", the geographic panhandle of southernmost Kuwait.. Observation posts 8 and 7 overlooked the coastal highway that ran to Khafji, considered the most likely invasion route of the city..1st Marine Division had 3 companies positioned at observation posts 4, 5 and 6 (Task Force Shepard), while the 2nd Marine Division's 2nd Light Armored Infantrye Battalion set up a screen between observation post 1 and the Al-Wafrah oil fields..The U.S. Army's 2nd Armored Division provided its 1st Tiger Brigade to give the Marines some much needed armoured support...
