10,000 US soldiers not in Afghanistan to train local troops: Iosbaker

An American antiwar activist says the newly-signed security agreement between Kabul and Washington for the presence of about 10,000 US troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014 has nothing to with the training of Afghan forces.

Joe Iosbaker, a leader of the United National Antiwar Coalition, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Tuesday, shortly after the government of new Afghan President Ashraf Ghani signed the so-called Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) in a televised ceremony at the presidential palace.

Ghani was sworn in on Monday after a long and controversial election process. Ghani's predecessor, Hamid Karzai, who had developed differences with Washington in the last year of his nearly 13-year rule, refused to sign the deal with the US.

“The 10,000 soldiers are not there for training. They are there to maintain a government that will do the bidding of the US government,” Iosbaker said, adding that Washington knew Ghani would be on their side.

“The US identified him [Ghani] a long time ago as reliable. He lived in the US for many years. He works for the World Bank. What is the job description of someone from Afghanistan who works for the World Bank and has been easing the transfer of wealth from his country to the US, to the wealthiest countries?” he said.

Iosbaker also said that “the Afghan government is so completely corrupt. But how could they not be? They have learned from the best, the US occupation.”

“Every contractor working for the US has their pockets stuffed with cash,” he noted.

Under the agreement, soldiers from Germany, Italy, and other NATO member states will join the 9,800 remaining US soldiers, raising the total number to about 12,500.

The agreement grants immunity to US-led troops operating in the country. It also allows the US-led forces to carry out deadly night-time raids on Afghan homes, which has triggered widespread protests in Afghanistan.

The United States and its allies attacked Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains in the country, despite the presence of tens of thousands of foreign troops.

Karzai rebuffs US, warms up to Iran

‘Afghans exploited for empire goals’
Karzai concerned about country security

As the stalemate over the contentious US-Afghan bilateral security agreement continues, President Hamid Karzai’s strong defiance and nonchalance is raising hackles in the political and intelligentsia circles of US.

After his much-publicized day-long visit to Tehran last week, where he met and held extensive deliberations with the newly-elected President of Iran Hassan Rouhani, the outgoing Afghan president is now creating a storm from Paris.

In a fiery interview with French daily Le Monde on Tuesday, President Karzai launched a scathing attack on US government, accusing it of ‘issuing threats’ and acting like a ‘colonial power’ to coerce Afghan government to sign the bilateral security agreement.

“They are making threats like, ‘we won’t pay salaries, we’ll drive you into a civil war’; these kinds of threats,” the paper quoted President Karzai saying. He said he is willing to sign the agreement before April 2014 Presidential elections only under two circumstances: airstrikes and military raids on Afghan homes should end and US should intensify efforts to broker peace with Taliban insurgents.

According to Karzai, the special US envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, James Dobbins, had categorically told him during his latest visit to Kabul that the prospects of peace are bleak without this security agreement. “If you do not sign the agreement, we will stoke flames of war and fighting in your country, we will cause trouble,” President Karzai interpreted the meaning of Mr. Dobbin’s words like this. But, Karzai said Afghans will not submit or surrender. “We have fought colonial masters in the past, and we do not accept it.”

"Earlier, on Sunday, President Karzai left for Tehran even as US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel was on a surprise visit to Kabul. Much to the chagrin of US government, President Karzai and his Iranian counterpart Mr. Rouhani agreed in principle to start negotiations on the economic and security ‘pact of friendship’. The one-day visit was significant as it gave Afghan President a chance to meet the Iranian President second time in four months, and more importantly, ruffle the feathers of US government he has been at loggerheads with lately."
Iran, a strong ally and neighbor of Afghanistan, is opposed to the bilateral security agreement between Kabul and Washington and the continuing presence of US troops in the country. “We are concerned about the tensions arising from the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan and believe that all foreign forces should withdraw and the security of Afghanistan should be entrusted to the people of that country,” Mr. Rouhani said in a statement.

His words are echoed by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs, Ebrahim Rahimpour: “Iran, as a friend and ally of Afghanistan, has decided to oppose the signing of BSA between US and Afghan governments, because we believe the agreement will damage the Afghanistan government and nation's interests.”

President Karzai, who initially batted for the deal and exhorted the lawmakers in Afghanistan to approve it, is not averse to signing the pact, but has shown reluctance to do so before the coming elections. Many top-ranking US officials have been persuading him to relent, but he remains unfazed. Those who have visited Kabul in last few weeks include James Dubbins, the US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan; Susan E. Rice, the US National Security Advisor and Chuck Hegel, the US Defense Secretary.

With President Karzai refusing to budge from his stand, US government is reportedly exploring other options to seal the deal. US Secretary of State John Kerry, during a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in Brussels last week, said the agreement can also be signed by Afghan Defense Minister or any other high-ranking government official, if President Karzai remains adamant, dropping hints that US is not ruling out the possibility of dumping the incumbent President and roping in some US loyalist as his replacement for the remaining period of this government’s tenure that ends in April 2014.

Mr. Kerry’s rabble-rousing remarks drew sharp reactions from the Presidential Palace here in Kabul. President Karzai’s Spokesman Aimal Faizi said it is immaterial who should sign the deal; the core issue is that the aspirations and demands of the people of Afghanistan should be honored and accepted by the US government. Mr. Faizi said the US is making indefatigable efforts to maintain the presence of its troops in Afghanistan after 2014.

“President Karzai wants a complete end to the unilateral military operations on Afghan homes and a result-oriented start to the peace process,” Faizi said. “As long as these demands are not met, President Karzai will not authorize any member of the government to sign the agreement.”

The logjam over the deal continues even after Loya Jirga - a traditional assembly of 2500 tribal elders, religious figures and political leaders gave its consent to the deal late last month and asked Karzai government to seal the pact without further dilly-dallying. But, President Karzai, because of some serious reservations, has refused to sign the deal in his tenure, which ends in April next year.

US officials say the pact is critical to keep some forces in Afghanistan post 2014 for training Afghan security forces and for counter-terrorism operations. They have even threatened to stop the financial aid to the war-weary country, if the deal fails to materialize.

US-led airstrikes kill 6 in Afghanistan

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 12:52:48 GMT

At least six people have been killed after US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan carried out separate airstrikes in the eastern part of the war-ravaged country during the past 24 hours, Press TV reports.

Local officials said an unmanned aerial vehicle launched an airborne attack in the mountainous eastern province of Khost on Monday, leaving four people dead.

Two other people lost their lives in a similar airstrike in the eastern province of Laghman earlier in the day.

The US-led forces have recently increased their air raids against civilian areas in Afghanistan.

On September 26, a drone attack in the eastern province of Nangarhar left at least six people, including two women, dead and a woman injured.

Four people were also killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan’s northeastern province of Kunar on September 23.

According to local officials, the airborne assault in the Ghaziabad district of the province targeted the Taliban and those killed in the raid were members of the militant group.

Civilian casualties have long been a source of friction between the Afghan government and US-led forces, and have dramatically increased anti-US sentiments in the country.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country as does heroin production, despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.

‘Iraq Kurds attack Takfiris on 3 fronts’

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 10:10:24 GMT

Kurdish Peshmerga forces have carried out military operations against ISIL Takfiri militants on three fronts in northern Iraq, military sources say.

Senior Kurdish commanders, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Peshmerga fighters launched pre-dawn attacks against ISIL positions in the border town of Rabia situated northwest of Mosul early on Tuesday.

The Kurdish military officials said their forces entered Rabia and engaged in heavy clashes with ISIL militants there after liberating the villages of as-Saudiyah and Mahmudiyah.

According to the military sources, Kurdish troops also launched a similar offensive in the city of Zumar in northern Iraq.

Elsewhere on the battlefield, Kurdish forces managed to liberate the villages around the town of Daquq, south of the key oil city of Kirkuk. The area had been under the control of ISIL Takfiris since June 10.

“They have liberated the villages of Saad and Khaled. The Peshmerga have taken full control of the area, following fierce fighting,” Kurdish General Westa Rasul said.

Several Western states, who have been widely blamed for the rise of Takfiri terrorists, are now supplying the Kurdish fighters with military equipment and weapons. Since early August, the US military has been carrying out airstrikes on ISIL positions in Iraq.

In recent weeks, ISIL Takfiri militants have suffered severe losses as the Iraqi army and Kurdish Peshmerga forces go ahead with their offensive against the terrorists in several parts of the Arab country.

Having taken control of parts of Syria, the ISIL terrorist group sent its militants into neighboring Iraq in early June and quickly seized large swathes of the territory there.

Cameron ‘ignores British interests’

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 09:50:05 GMT

A political commentator says British Prime Minster David Cameron ignores Britain’s national interests and is furthering the US-Israeli agenda in the Mideast region, Press TV reports.

“Cameron is an Israeli stooge who defends Tel Aviv’s genocidal policies,” Shabbir Hassanally, an activist and Islamic scholar from London, told Press TV on Tuesday.

“People like [Former British Premier] Tony Blair and Cameron don’t care about Britain’s national interest, public and reality of the situation…They follow the lines of what Israelis and the American hegemony want from them,” Hassanally said.

Hassanally was commenting on Cameron’s recent remarks that Iran needs to change its policies on certain issues, including its nuclear energy program.

The commentator went on to say that the US-led West and its regional ally Saudi Arabia have been the main manufacturers of the ISIL militant group and other terrorist organizations.

Hassanally also added that Iran has undertaken serious efforts to tackle the ongoing militancy in Syria and Iraq.

Following Cameron’s recent remarks about Iran, senior Iranian officials expressed regret that the British government, which has been supporting terrorist groups, has passed an “inappropriate judgment” on the Islamic Republic, which has always been at the forefront of the campaign against the scourge of terrorism.

ISIL guilty of cultural cleansing: UNESC

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 09:37:44 GMT

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has warned that ISIL terrorist group is committing “cultural cleansing” in Iraq.

UNESCO Chief Irina Bokova said Monday ISIL Takfiri militants have caused irreparable damage to Muslim shrines, churches and precious manuscripts in the cities of Mosul, Tikrit and other areas since June when the terrorist group occupied large swaths of Iraq.

She said that UNESCO had alerted all states as well as “the main museums around the world and the art market, Interpol, the World Customs Organization ... by calling for the utmost vigilance over objects that could come from the current looting of Iraqi heritage.”

US war with China in future 'inevitable'

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 09:28:35 GMT

A number of American politicians argue that a military conflict between the United States and China is inevitable in the future, a political commentator in Washington says.

“It’s very definitely an element inside the US that is arguing that a war with China at some future point is almost inevitable, because China is a rising power, becoming a formidable military power in the region, and the US is static and some people feel even declining,” said Jeff Steinberg, a senior editor for the Executive Intelligence Review.

He also added that despite China’s efforts to “build economic cooperation” in the South China Sea and de-escalate tensions in the region, the US military doctrine is seeking the “encirclement and containment” of China.

There are “many people in China who believe that the whole underlying concept behind President Obama’s Asia pivot is an encirclement and containment of China for an eventual conflict,” he said.

Syria makes gains against militants

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 09:03:36 GMT

The Syrian army has made more gains in its campaign against foreign-backed militants in the countryside of the capital Damascus.

Government forces have clashed with militants in the al-Dokhania district, inflicting heavy losses on them.

The area has been under militant control for the past few weeks.

Reports say a number of militants, among them a senior commander, have been killed in the fighting.

A few days ago, Syrian troops recaptured the strategic town of Adra, northeast of Damascus. The army also secured highways as well as an industrial zone on its outskirts.

Turkey undergoing rights rollback: HRW

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 08:14:38 GMT

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says Turkey is suffering a “worrying rollback” of human rights under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, criticizing Ankara for what it calls restricting judicial independence and media freedom.

In its report on Turkey published on Monday, the New York-based rights body accused the Turkish government of “increasing intolerance towards political opposition, public protest and critical media.”

“The [Turkish] government feels no hesitancy to intervene in the criminal justice system when its interests are threatened,” the HRW report said.

Karzai ‘kept distance’ from US

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 08:06:13 GMT

A prominent political analyst says former Afghan President Hamid Karzai constantly tried to distance himself away from the United States during the latter part of his presidency.

Wayne Madsen made the remark during an exclusive interview with Press TV on Monday.

“In the latter part of his term, Karzai started to talk about Afghanistan’s joining the counter-NATO organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). This was an attempt by Karzai to wane Afghanistan away from this current relationship. That doesn’t play very well for Washington,” Madsen said.

Madsen noted that Karzai also refused to sign a bilateral security agreement (BSA) with the US despite constant pressure by Washington.

The remarks come as Karzai, in his farewell speech on Monday, blamed both the United States and Pakistan for the continuing Taliban-led militancy and warned the new government to be extra cautious in relations with the US and the West.

Chicago shootings kill five, injure dozens

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 07:51:47 GMT

A bloody shooting spree in the US city of Chicago has left five people dead and more than 40 others injured over the weekend, according to authorities.

Among the dead was a 13-year-old boy, who was shot Sunday night on a sidewalk in the South Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

A 24-year-old man was fatally shot at about 11 p.m. Sunday in the South Chicago neighborhood when a car drove by and someone inside fired shots. An 18-year-old woman and 35-year-old man, who were with the dead victim, were shot and wounded.

On Saturday morning, a 23-year-old man died after a shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said.

Earlier on Friday, a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in the head and two others were wounded in an Englewood neighborhood shooting.

The weekend’s first deadly shooting occurred Friday at about 2 p.m. when someone opened fire inside a barbershop in the West Englewood neighborhood. Two others were wounded in the incident.

Police said most of the shootings were gang-related. At least 43 people were reportedly wounded in the weekend shootings. Many of the victims were black or Hispanic.

Chicago, the third largest city in the US, struggles with one of the highest rates of gun violence in the country. The city’s gun-related homicide rate is three times higher than New York's, and twice that of Los Angeles.

The US averages about 87 gun deaths and 183 injuries each day as a function of gun violence, equaling to over 30,000 deaths per year, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab.

According to a recent study based on 11 years worth of data from the US government, African Americans are twice as likely to be shot and killed by gun violence as white Americans are.

US seeking to Balkanize Middle East: International lawyer

The US government is pursuing the “destabilization” and a “perpetual conflict” in the Middle East in order to “Balkanize” the countries of the region, an international lawyer in Indonesia says.

“The US is pursuing a long term strategy of destabilizing the region by promoting conflict and, like Israel, would be more than happy to see Iraq and Syria Balkanized,” said Barry Grossman in a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday.

“What was once probably at most a US contingency plan has apparently become a live, high priority operation, though the executive branch is not necessarily a part of the related decision making process,” he added.

“There clearly are elements within both the security and the political apparatus who see destabilization, perpetual conflict and, ultimately, a Balkanization of Iraq and Syria, as being very desirable to the interests they represent,” he noted.

This approach “certainly suits what are generally recognized as America’s primary foreign policy aims in the region; that is, keeping oil and gas flowing to the market, preventing the proliferation of armaments and containing any group or state which resists the US dominated international system,” Grossman said.

“Rogue elements, often with dual loyalties, routinely manipulate both public opinion and political opposition by spinning or straight out fabricating facts, which in turn are used to create the impression of a new national security crises, always originating in the Middle East, which requires the usual US military intervention, and of course, a continuing military footprint,” he argued.

“In reality, those problems which do exist, as often as not, one way or another, are largely of US making and would be best resolved by regional powers with a direct stake in the matter,” Grossman contended.

“US foreign policy has become so absurd, that they no longer even pretend to be providing permanent solutions to short term problems,” the international lawyer asserted.

“Instead, they spin short term problems, which are for the most part manageable, so that the public and the public consciousness they become long term problems of the utmost urgency and then the US proposes a response which rather than being a solution, is in fact itself a much more serious problem for the region than the one supposedly being addressed. As for the various insurgency franchises operating in the region, the US seems to have great difficulty deciding whether they want to fight them or dance with them,” Grossman stated.

“The American approach to foreign policy is like a man suffering from cancer trying to treat his [own] condition by using an axe to remove a small tumor from his neighbor’s chest,” he concluded.
