Arrow Kingdoms of Wales

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau..
Quote:
The English words "Wales" and "Welsh" derive from the same Germanic root (singular Walh, plural Walha), which was itself derived from the name of the Celtic tribe known to the Romans as Volcae and which came to refer indiscriminately to all Celts and, later, to all inhabitants of the Roman Empire.. The Old English-speaking Anglo-Saxons came to use the term Wælisc when referring to the Celtic Britons in particular, and Wēalas when referring to their lands.. The modern names for some Continental European lands (Wallonia and Wallachia) and peoples (e.g. the Vlachs via a borrowing into Old Church Slavonic) have a similar etymology..The modern Welsh name for themselves is Cymry, and Cymru is the Welsh name for Wales.. These words are descended from the Brythonic word combrogi, meaning "fellow-countrymen"..The use of the word Cymry as a self-designation derives from the post-Roman Era relationship of the Welsh with the Brythonic-speaking peoples of northern England and southern Scotland, the peoples of "Yr Hen Ogledd" (The Old North).. It emphasised a perception that the Welsh and the "Men of the North" were one people, different from other peoples..In particular, the term was not applied to the Cornish or the Breton peoples, who are of similar heritage, culture, and language to both the Welsh and the Men of the North...

The Roman conquest of Wales began in AD 48 and took 30 years to complete. Roman rule lasted over 300 years.. The campaigns of conquest are the most widely known feature of Wales during the Roman era, because of the spirited, but ultimately unsuccessful, defence of their homelands by two native tribes: the Silures and the Ordovices.. Roman rule in Wales was a military occupation, save for the southern coastal region of South Wales, east of the Gower Peninsula, where there is a legacy of Romanisation.. The only town in Wales founded by the Romans, Caerwent, is in South Wales. Both Caerwent and Carmarthen, also in southern Wales, became Roman civitates..When the Roman garrison of Britain was withdrawn in 410, the various British states were left self-governing.. Evidence for a continuing Roman influence after the departure of the Roman legions is provided by an inscribed stone from Gwynedd dated between the late 5th century and mid 6th century commemorating a certain Cantiorix who was described as a citizen (cives) of Gwynedd and a cousin of Maglos the magistrate (magistratus)..There was considerable Irish colonisation in Dyfed in south-west Wales, where there are many stones with Ogham inscriptions.. Wales had become Christian, and the "age of the saints" (approximately 500–700) was marked by the establishment of monastic settlements throughout the country, by religious leaders such as Saint David, Illtud and Teilo..While Romanisation was far from complete, the upper classes of Wales began to consider themselves Roman, particularly after the ruling of 212 that granted Roman citizenship to all free men throughout the Empire.. Further Roman influence came through the spread of Christianity, which gained many followers after Christians were allowed to worship freely in 313..Early historians, including the 6th century cleric Gildas, have noted 383 as a significant point in Welsh history, as it is stated in literature as the foundation point of several medieval royal dynasties...

In Central and Eastern Europe, the word for Romanic people was borrowed from the Germanic Goths into Proto-Slavic some time before the 7th century..The Vlachs are several modern Latin peoples descending from the Romanized population in the present-day territory of Romania and Moldova, as well as the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula and south and west of the Danube River..The word Vlach is ultimately of Germanic origin, from the word Walha, "foreigner", "stranger", a name used by ancient Germanic peoples to refer to Romance-speaking and (Romanized) Celtic neighbours.. In turn, Walha may have been derived from the name of a Celtic tribe which was known to the Romans as Volcae in the writings of Julius Caesar and to the Greeks as Ouólkai in texts by Strabo and Ptolemy..As such, the term Vlach shares its history with several European ethnic names, including the Welsh and Walloons..Due to the Vlachs’ extensive occupation with sheepherding, their ethnonym has come, since the Middle Ages, to be identified with the profession of the sheepherder in many Balkan and Central European languages..Many Vlachs in mediaeval times were shepherds who drove their sheep through the mountains of south-eastern Europe.. The Vlach shepherds reached as far as southern Poland and Moravia in the north by following the Carpathian range, the Dinaric Alps in the west, the Pindus mountains in the south, and the Caucasus Mountains in the east..Wallach is a tiny lunar impact crater located in the eastern Mare Tranquillitatis...

Lightbulb House of Dinefwr

Banner of the House of Dinefwr..

Quote:
The House of Dinefwr was a royal house of Wales and refers to the descendants of Cadell ap Rhodri King of Seisyllwg, son of Rhodri the Great..The House of Dinefwr was a royal house of Wales and refers to the descendants of Cadell ap Rhodri King of Seisyllwg, son of Rhodri the Great..With the death of Rhodri Mawr, the kingdom of Gwynedd passed to his eldest son Anarawd ap Rhodri.. Rhodri's second son Cadell ap Rhodri, however, looked outside Gwynedd's traditional borders and took possession of the Dark Ages kingdom of Dyfed by the late 9th century, establishing his capital at the citadel of Dinefwr.. Cadell ap Rhodri's descendants are designated Dinefwr after the citadel from which they would rule Dyfed.. The Dinefwr dynasty under king Hywel Dda would unite Dyfed and Seisyllwg into the kingdom of Deheubarth in the early 10th century. The Dinefwr dynasty would rule in Deheubarth until their conquest by the Anglo-Normans in the 13th century.. This branch would compete with House Aberffraw for supremacy and influence in Wales throughout the 10th, 11th, and 12th century, with Powys variously ruled between them.. Eventually, a cadet branch of Dinefwr would establish itself in Powys by the mid 11th century, designated Mathrafal after the castle there..Rhodri was the son of Merfyn Frych, who had claimed Gwynedd upon the extinction of Cunedda's male line.. Rhodri then inherited the realm after his father's death around 844.. Merfyn hailed from "Manaw" which may either refer to the Isle of Man or Manau, the ancestral homeland of all Gwynedd's kings since Cunedda..According to later genealogies, his mother or grandmother was Nest ferch Cadell of the ruling dynasty in Powys...

In 1462, Vlad Dracula returns from a victory against the Turks to find his wife, Elisabeta...

Seisyllwg was a petty kingdom of medieval Wales.. It is unclear when it emerged as a distinct unit, but according to later sources it consisted of the former Kingdom of Ceredigion plus the region known as Ystrad Tywi.. Thus it covered the modern county of Ceredigion, part of Carmarthenshire, and the Gower Peninsula..In 872, Gwgon, the last in the traditional line of kings of Ceredigion, drowned, leaving no heir.. Gwgon's sister, Angharad, was married to Rhodri the Great of Gwynedd, who became steward over Gwgon's realm..After Cadell's death in 911, Seisyllwg was divided among his two sons, Howel (later known as Hywel Dda, or Howel the Good), and Clydog.. Hywel probably already had control over the neighboring kingdom of Dyfed by that time; there are no known kings of Dyfed following the death of Llywarch ap Hyfaidd in 904, and Hywel is known to have been married to Llywarch's daughter, Elen.. He certainly had control over it by the time Clydog died in 920, leaving the whole of Seissylwg to Hywel.. Hwyel quickly merged Seisyllwg and Dyfed into the new kingdom of Deheubarth, which covered most of southwest Wales.. From this power base, he later went on to unite almost all of Wales...

Welsh castle overlooking the River..

The Tudor dynasty of Wales and England were female line descendants of the House of Dinefwr through their ancestor Owen Tudor..The FitzGerald dynasty and related families of Ireland are female line descendants of the Welsh royal family through Nest, daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr, last King of Deheubarth, whose descendants include Elizabeth I, John F. Kennedy, and Diana Princess of Wales..The FitzGerald dynasty is a Hiberno-Norman or Cambro-Norman dynasty, and have been Peers of Ireland since at least the 14th century..Rhys ap Tewdwr (before 1065 – 1093) was a king of Deheubarth in Wales and member of the Dinefwr dynasty, a branch descended from Rhodri the Great.. He was born in the area which is now Carmarthenshire and died at the battle of Brecon in April 1093..Nest ferch Rhys (c. 1085 - before 1136) was the only legitimate daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr, last King of Deheubarth, by his wife, Gwladys ferch Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn of Powys.. She is sometimes known, incorrectly, as "Nesta" or "Princess Nesta"..

Arrow Welsh Driads

Third Ear Band - Fleance..
Quote:
The Welsh Triads (Trioedd Ynys Prydein, literally "Triads of the Island of Britain") are a group of related texts in medieval manuscripts which preserve fragments of Welsh folklore, mythology and traditional history in groups of three.. The triad is a rhetorical form whereby objects are grouped together in threes, with a heading indicating the point of likeness.. For example, "Three things not easily restrained, the flow of a torrent, the flight of an arrow, and the tongue of a fool"..The texts include references to King Arthur and other semi-historical characters from Sub-Roman Britain, mythic figures such as Bran the Blessed, undeniably historical personages such as Alan IV, Duke of Brittany (who is called Alan Fyrgan) and Iron Age characters such as Caswallawn (Cassivellaunus) and Caradoc (Caratacus)..Sub-Roman Britain is a term derived from an archaeological label for the material culture of Great Britain in Late Antiquity..Coins would normally be the most useful tool for dating, but not for sub-Roman Britain since no newly minted coins are believed to have entered circulation after the very early 5th century ..

Bas-relief of triple Coventina..

Coventina was a Romano-British goddess of wells and springs..Dedications to Coventina and votive deposits were found in a walled area which had been built to contain the outflow from a spring now called "Coventina's Well"..The well itself was a spring in a rectangular basin..The contents of the well included 13487 coins from Mark Anthony to Gratian, a relief of 3 water nymphs, the head of a male statue, 2 dedication slabs to the goddess Coventina, 10 altars to Coventina and Minerva, 2 clay incense burners, and a wide range of votive objects..Evidence from coin hoards and stones which covered them and those also blocking the well suggest a fairly abrupt end around 388, perhaps due to events linked to anti-Pagan edicts of Theodosius I..Theodosius's army rapidly dissolved after his death, with Gothic contingents raiding as far as Constantinople.. As his heir in the East he left Arcadius, who was about twelve years old, and in the West Honorius, who was 8.. Neither ever showed any sign of fitness to rule, and their reigns were marked by a series of disasters..Excavation of the site revealed several inscribed altars, on one, Coventina is either depicted in triple form or with 2 attendants..Three altars dedicated to Mithras were placed there by the Prefects of the military garrison...

The earliest surviving collection of the Welsh Triads is bound in the manuscript Peniarth 16, now at the National Library of Wales, which has been dated to the third quarter of the 13th century and contains 46 of the 96 triads edited by Rachel Bromwich..The 18th century Welsh antiquarian Iolo Morganwg compiled a collection of triads, which he claimed to have taken from his own collection of manuscripts.. Some of his triads are similar to those found in the medieval manuscripts, but some are unique to Morganwg, and are widely believed to have been of his own invention..The use of the triad form (arrangement into threes) to encapsulate certain ideas is neither distinctively Irish nor Celtic, but can be widely attested in many societies over the world, in part owing to its usefulness as a mnemonic device..

The 3 (spirit, mind, and soul) descend into the 4 (the world), the sum being the 7, or the mystic nature of man, consisting of a threefold spiritual body and a fourfold material form.. These are symbolized by the cube, which has six surfaces and a mysterious se7enth point within.. The six surfaces are the directions:north, east, south, west, up, and down; or, front, back, right, left, above, and below; or again, earth, fire, air, water, spirit, and matter.. In the midst of these stands the 1, which is the upright figure of man, from whose center in the cube radiate six pyramids. From this comes the great occult axiom: "The center is the father of the directions, the dimensions, and the distances"...

Most Haunted-South Stack Lighthouse ..
Quote:
The Lighthouse has warned passing ships of the treacherous rock below since its completion in 1809.. The 91-foot (28 m)-tall lighthouse on South Stack was designed by Daniel Alexander and the main light is visible to passing vessels for 24 nmi (44 km; 28 mi), and was designed to allow safe passage for ships on the treacherous Dublin–Holyhead–Liverpool sea route..It provides the first beacon along the northern coast of Anglesey for east-bound ships..It is followed by lighthouses, fog horns and other markers at North Stack, Holyhead Breakwater, The Skerries, the Mice, Point Lynas and at the south-east tip of the island Trwyn Du..In 2010 a French comic entitled Les Gardiens des Enfers ("The Guardians of Hell") was published..Its story is mainly set in South Stack lighthouse in 1859..The lighthouse is operated remotely by Trinity House..Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and tour the engine room and exhibition area..The lighthouse is open seasonally...

The story goes that on the 25th and 26th of October 1859 an extraordinary storm (known as the ‘Royal Charter Storm’ after the famous steam clipper that was lost that day on the coast of Anglesey with over 450 souls onboard) smashed the western coast of Britain sinking 133 ships and badly damaging a further 90 (according to the Board of Trades records).. The assistant lighthouse keeper at South Stack at that time was John ‘Jack’ Jones, and on his way to the lighthouse on the 25th of October he was struck on the head by a falling rock from the cliff face just as he reached the suspension bridge. Jack was critically hurt, but he managed to get across the bridge in the gale force 12 storm, climb the path and reach the lighthouse.. Regrettably his cries for help were drowned out by the storm, and he wasn’t found until the next day by Henry Bowen, lying outside the door to the lighthouse.. He died 3 weeks later from his injuries.. It is said that heavy footsteps can be heard along with strange screams, and that rattling of doors and the rapping on windows is said to be the ghost of the lighthouse keeper in search of shelter from the storm ...

There are more than 200 living species of cockles, with many more fossil forms..The common cockle, Cerastoderma edule, is widely distributed around the coastlines of Northern Europe, with a range extending west to Ireland, the Barents Sea in the north, Norway in the east, and as far south as Senegal..The dog cockle, Glycymeris glycymeris, has a similar range and habitat to the common cockle, but is not at all closely related, being in the family Glycymerididae.. The dog cockle is edible, but due to its tuffness when cooked it is generally not eaten, although a process is being developed to solve this problem..The blood cockle, Anadara granosa (not related to the true cockles, instead in the family Arcidae) is extensively cultured from southern Korea to Malaysia.. A few bore into wood, clay or stone and live inside these substances..Some bivalves, such as the scallops, can swim..Bivalves have long been a part of the diet of coastal human populations..Bivalves appear in the fossil record first in the early Cambrian more than 500 million years ago..Molluscs are the largest marine phylum, comprising about 23% of all the named marine organisms..However, collecting cockles is hard work and, as seen from the Morecambe Bay disaster, in which 23 illegal immigrants died, can be dangerous if local tidal conditions are not carefully watched..The name "bivalve" is derived from the Latin bis, meaning "two", and valvae, meaning "leaves of a door"..A meal of cockles fried with bacon, served with laver bread, is known as a traditional Welsh breakfast..It was the first Warwick Film to be filmed in CinemaScope...

Good stuff, I just wish more youngsters knew more about their own Welsh history. Instead of being brainwashed into how wonderful the English royals were/are.

Portrait thought to be of Edward I..
Quote:
The Statutes of Wales (Latin: Statuta Vallie) or (Statutum Vallie or Statutum Valliae), provided the constitutional basis for the government of the Principality of North Wales from 1284 until 1536.. The statute was enacted on 3 March 1284 and promulgated on 19 March at Rhuddlan Castle in North Wales, after careful consideration of the position by Edward I..The Statute of Rhuddlan was issued from Rhuddlan Castle in North Wales, one of the "iron ring" of fortresses built by Edward I, to control his newly conquered lands.. It provided the constitutional basis for the government of what was called "The Land of Wales" or "the kings lands of Snowdon and his other lands in Wales", but subsequently called the "Principality of North Wales"...

"Sheep, Mere Sheep" (HD)..

The status of the Prince of Gwynedd had been recognised by the English crown as Prince of Wales in 1267, holding his lands with the king of England as his feudal overlord.. Thus the English interpreted the title of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Lord of Aberffraw, which was briefly held after his death by his successor Dafydd ap Gruffudd.. This meant that when Llywelyn rebelled, the English interpreted it as an act of treason.. Accordingly, his lands escheated to the king of England, and Edward I took possession of the Principality of Wales by military conquest from 1282 to 1283.. By this means the principality became "united and annexed" to the crown of England..

The Statute introduced the English common law system to Wales, but the law administered was not precisely the same as in England.. The criminal law was much the same, with felonies such as murder, larceny and robbery prosecuted before the justiciar, as in England..The English writs and forms of action, such as novel disseisin, debt and dower, operated, but with oversight from Caernarfon, rather than the distant Westminster.. However, the Welsh practice of settling disputes by arbitration was retained..The procedure for debt was in advance of that in England, in that a default judgment could be obtained.. In land law, the Welsh practice of partible inheritance continued, but in accordance with English practice:

Daughters could inherit their father's lands if there was no son.
Widows were entitled to dower in a third of their late husband's lands..
Bastards were excluded from inheriting...

Edward enjoyed poetry and harp music, was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Eleanor of Castile, and as a religious man he gave generously to charity...

Lightbulb Pearl of Wales

Saint Catherine Born c. 287..
Quote:
Criccieth is a town and community on Cardigan Bay, in the Eifionydd area of Gwynedd in Wales..Noted for its fairs, held on 23 May and 29 June every year, when large numbers of people visit the fairground and the market which spreads through many of the streets of the town..Famous people associated with the town include the British prime minister, David Lloyd George, who grew up in the nearby village of Llanystumdwy, and poet William George..Religion has been an important part of Criccieth's life since early days, around 1300..Criccieth hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1975 and in 2003 was granted Fairtrade Town status..The earliest recorded form of the place name Criccieth in Welsh is found in Brut y Tywysogion where reference is made to the imprisonment of Gruffudd ap Llywelyn in the 'castle of Cruceith' ..cricc From Proto-Germanic *krukjō ‎(“crutch, staff”), from Proto-Indo-European *grewg- ‎(“wrinkle, bend”), from Proto-Indo-European *ger- ‎(“to turn, bend”)..Certain Cie'th Stones only activate after certain requirements are met..The area around Criccieth was settled during the Bronze Age, and a chambered tomb, Cae Dyni, survives on the coast to the east of the town; it consists of se7en upright stones, and there are 13 cup marks, arranged in several groups..Primary education is provided by Ysgol Treferthyr on Lôn Bach, which has 130 pupils...

KATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA..

There are a number of theories as to the meaning, but the most popular is that it comes from Crug Caeth: caeth may mean 'prisoner' and thus the name could mean prisoner's rock, a reference to the imprisonment of one of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth's sons in the castle by his brother..In later medieval times the settlement was also known as Treferthyr (martyr's town), probably a reference to Saint Catherine, after whom the parish church is named..Evidence from other sites on the Llŷn Peninsula suggests that the area was colonised by a wave of Celtic settlers, who explored the Irish Sea, probably around the 4th century BC..Although it is thought that Criccieth Castle was built around 1230 by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, who had controlled the area since 1202, the first record of the building was in 1239, when the administrative centre of Eifionydd was moved from Dolbenmaen..Dafydd was half English and feared that his pure Welsh half-brother would be able to gather support to overthrow him.. According to Laurence Gardner the term Celtic or Keltae is a Greco Roman word for stranger! It certainly was not any word used by the people of the north themselves to refer to themselves because they were not strangers to themselves or their neighbors. These people were only strangers to the Romans and southern peoples and the term Keltae simply grew out to take over referring to all the peoples of the north which were "GAELIC" not Celtic and all this thread and I never saw one word about Gaelic people which were the people you are speaking about not Celtic. Use the word our people used themselves not the one given to us by the Romans for crying out loud!

Llywelyn the Last..

Coronet of G..
Quote:
At the beginning, Prince Charles sits in armchair and talks to camera about his forth coming investiture ceremony at Carnarvon Castle, Wales..Later, the ceremony starts at Carnavron Castle.. Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh arrive..

Of The Prince Of Wales Aka POW (1969)..

The tradition of investing the heir-apparent of the English, and subsequently British, monarch with the title of "Prince of Wales" began in 1301, when King Edward I of England, having completed the conquest of Wales, gave the title to his heir-apparent, Prince Edward (later King Edward II of England)..

The Italian Job - Lamb-orghini Destroyed (1969) HD..

It is recorded that Llywelyn ap Gruffudd had deposited his coronet along with his other regalia with the monks at Cymer Abbey for safekeeping at the start of his final campaign in 1282.. He was killed later that year.. It was seized and presented to King Edward I of England as a token of the complete annihilation of the independent Welsh state...

Prince Charles was created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester by Letters Patent on 26 July 1958,though his actual investiture did not take place until 1 July 1969..The ceremony began with Prince Charles, led by the regalia bearers, entering the Chamberlain Tower, to await the arrival of Her Majesty.. Once the royal family had arrived, the lesser members took their seat in the gallery, but the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, led by the Earl of Snowdon, the Lord Great Chamberlain, the Earl Marshal and the Gentleman Usher carrying the Great Sword of State, made their way to the stage where the investiture was to be conducted.. As they came to the stage Prince Charles knelt before the 3 thrones on the stage.. During the reading of the Letters Patent in Welsh, the Queen invested Charles with the girdle, sword, coronet, ring, rod and kingly mantle, in that order. Prince Charles then stated, "I, Charles, do become your liege man of life and limb and of earthly worship, and faith and truth I bear unto you, to live and die against all manner of folks".. Charles then customarily kissed the Queen's cheek and they embraced..The Letters Patent stated that Charles Phillip Arthur George would receive the title, style, honour and privilege of the Principality of Wales and Earldom of Chester"...

The investiture was watched by millions on TV, and attracted large and excited crowds in Caernarfon, but it also aroused considerable hostility among a minority of nationalist and republican Welsh people, some of whom were under constant police surveillance and were the subject of much intimidation from the secret services..On the eve of the investiture 2 were killed whilst placing a bomb outside government offices in Abergele.. In recent years, it has been claimed that the KGB plotted to disrupt the proceedings by bombing a bridge in Porthmadog..In recent opinion polls the majority of Welsh people have remained in favour of the monarchy with 70% plus support the usual figure; a poll in North Wales in 2003 by the Daily Post found 80% of respondents wanted Prince William to become the next Prince of Wales...

In dieser Zeromonie gibt Queen Elizabeth ihrem Sohn die Insignien, durch diesen Schritt wird er zum Prince of Wales...

Arrow The Earl of Snowdome

Martinique..

From MARTINIS to MOJITOS, SAKE to SCOTCH..
Quote:
Earl of Snowdon is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom..It was created in 1961, together with the subsidiary title Viscount Linley, of Nymans in the County of Sussex, for Antony Armstrong-Jones, who was then the husband of Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.. Snowdon as a peerage title had previous royal associations; the title of Baron Snowdon had been conferred along with the Dukedom of Edinburgh on Prince Frederick Louis, grandson of George I and future Prince of Wales, in 1726.. The title merged in the crown in 1760 when its holder acceded as George III..Platinum is a chemical element with symbol Pt and atomic number 78..Liver transplantation is the replacement of a diseased liver with some or all of a healthy liver from another person..Hepatitis is a medical condition defined by the inflammation of the liver and characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ...

Martinique owes its name to Christopher Columbus, who sighted the island in 1493, and finally landed on 15 June 1502..As with the other overseas departments, Martinique is 1 of the 18 regions of France (being an overseas region) and an integral part of the French Republic. As part of France, Martinique is part of the European Union, and its currency is the euro..When Columbus returned to the island in 1502, he rechristened the island as Martinica..The island was occupied first by Arawaks, then by Caribs..On 15 Sept 1635, Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc, French governor of the island of St. Kitts, landed in the harbor of St. Pierre with 150 French settlers after being driven off St. Kitts by the English..When the Carib revolted against French rule in 1658, the Governor Charles Houël du Petit Pré retaliated with war against them..

A martini glass full of champagne with cocaine on the rim, as salt would be on a Margarita..Very popular in the 80's..The drink will later be referred to as a "Vesper", after the original Bond girl, Vesper Lynd..A dry Martini is made with dry, white vermouth.. By the Roaring Twenties, it became common to ask for them..A purrfect Martini should be made by filling a glass with gin, then waving it in the general direction of Italy", Italy being a major producer of vermouth..Another theory links the first dry martini to the name of a bartender who concocted the drink at the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City in 1911 or 1912..Sometimes outside the James Bond scenario "shaken, not stirred" is used to mean "having had a shock but not suffering lasting mental effects from it"...

Perhaps the local council should throw cobbles over that beach..Located in the town of Sainte-Anne (in Martinique) the Salines beach is popular with locals and tourists.. Here's to Our Fraternity..
Quote:
Segni (Latin Signia) is an Italian town and comune located in Lazio.. The city is situated on a hilltop in the Lepini Mountains, and overlooks the valley of the Sacco River..According to ancient Roman sources, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the se7enth king of Rome, established a Roman colony at the town, then known as Signia..Additional colonists were reportedly sent there in 495 BC..The Segni were an ancient Belgian tribe reported by Julius Caesar...

Gules, an eagle chequy sable 14th century..

The Conti di Segni (de Comitibus Signie, Conti or De Comitibus) were an important noble family of medieval and early modern Italy originating in Segni, Lazio.. Many members of the family acted as military commanders or ecclesiastical dignitaries, including many cardinals and four popes..The family became divided into numerous branches, the principal of which were the counts of Segni and Valmontone, and the dukes of Poli and Guadagnolo (cf. House of Torlonia).. The former branch was extinct with Donna Fulvia (died 1611), who had married the count Sforza of Santa Fiora..The latter branch gave rise to the Colonna family (of which Pope Martin V was a member) before becoming extinct in its turn, in 1808.. Due to policy changes, Zeta Beta Tau has moved away from its exclusively Jewish membership and Zionist mission of its founding...

I hit Rhyl on the home straight of a tour of Shit Britain, by that stage feeling pretty much immune to blight and decay, along with hypothermia, e. coli and WKD Blue.. I’d even primed myself with two nights at Pontin’s Southport, entertained by Keith Harris & Orville and drunk children throwing up into the snow-dusted fag bins.. But Rhyl was something else.. There’s nowhere grimmer than a town that was purpose-built for having a good time, and now absolutely isn’t.. Particularly in February.. Failing to rise to the twin challenges of its bleak, silly name and being on Liverpool Bay, Rhyl has skulked away into the shadowy overlap that exists between the melancholy of a faded seaside resort and the heavier shit of hardcore urban degeneration..The ranks of weathered white oblongs gave Rhyl’s outlying static-caravan belt the look of a neglected war cemetery..

A depiction of Owain's death at Mortagne..

Most of the hefty old guesthouses on the sea front were boarded up or burnt out.. Those that weren’t, I’d been told, are now occupied by rehoused Liverpudlian opiate enthusiasts, though I thought better of confirming this with a door-to-door survey.. (Rhyl became Smackhead-on-Sea thanks to a 14-year-old Mr Big, who kept his stash in those plastic capsules out of Kinder Eggs, and was driven around in a limo by two heavies: it sounds like Junior Apprentice for class-A drug dealers.)..The one thing almost worth looking at – the deep brown sea – had been hidden from view by a massive concrete wall.. Most of the streets leading away from it appeared to have been cluster-bombed.. Courtesy of a predictably catastrophic Seventies makeover, the Edwardian pier and theatre had given way to a gigantic corrugated shed that would soon be hosting Go West – the 25th Anniversary Tour, and exuded all the ritzy, vibrant appeal of a Chernobyl bus depot..Rhyl’s core customers must have been pretty difficult to alienate: they were from Wolverhampton..From residents to erstwhile holidaymakers, it’s now almost impossible to find anyone with a good word to say about the place.. ‘My aunt is the Mayor of Rhyl,’ began my favourite onslaught, ‘but family loyalty aside, it’s the most awful place I know.’ ..

Bordering the banks of the Gironde estuary, this small town was for centuries a principality, as it acquired after the Hundred Years War, but ended up losing by escheat.. Military stronghold important, it also became a leading port in the 18th century, Gironde port ranked third (after Bordeaux and Blaye) in the middle of the 20th century, before declining gradually.. She now lives mainly from tourism, staying relatively still active fishing port..The church of Saint-Etienne, a very sober, is shaped like a Latin cross.. It comprises a nave of four bays, lit by a series of arched windows which were placed colorful stained glass from the workshops and DAGRANT dating from 1889.. The transept retains a number of medieval capitals, only remnants of the former church..The church furniture includes an antique altar Louis XVIII, in a taste similar to that of Saujon, a chair Louis XIII, an 18th century the Cross and statues dating mainly from the 19th century..The Pier , it aims to introduce visitors to the history and heritage of this small town on the banks of the Gironde..The entrance to the museum is free..Twinned with Aberffraw & Rhosyr...
