Encouraçado Classe Minas Gerais (1932)..
Quote:
The Minas Geraes class, spelled Minas Gerais in some sources, consisted of two battleships built for the Brazilian Navy in the early twentieth century.. Named Minas Geraes and São Paulo, the ships were intended to be Brazil's first step towards becoming an international power, and they consequently initiated a South American naval arms race...

The launch of Minas Geraes on 10 September 1908..

Minas Geraes, the lead ship, was laid down by Armstrong on 17 April 1907, while its sister ship São Paulo followed 13 days later at Vickers.. Construction of the partial hull needed to launch Minas Geraes was delayed by a four-month strike to 10 September 1908, and São Paulo followed on 19 April 1909.. Both were christened in front of large crowds by the wife of Francisco Régis de Oliveira, the Brazilian ambassador to the United Kingdom..After completion, both Minas Geraes and São Paulo sailed to other countries before arriving in Brazil.. Minas Geraes left the Tyne on 5 February 1910 and traveled to Plymouth before beginning a voyage to the US on 8 February..They arrived in the city on 17 April 1910..São Paulo left Greenock on 16 September 1910, and stopped in Cherbourg, France, to embark the Brazilian President Hermes da Fonseca.. Departing on the 27th, São Paulo voyaged to Lisbon, Portugal, where Fonseca was a guest of Portugal's King Manuel II..Soon after they arrived, the 5 October 1910 revolution began..

What do you think about the Lusitania ? I am convinced that this ship was deliberately set up to be sunk by Churchill and the British government -

Signing autographs at the Titanic Convention..

Sidney Edward Daniels (19 November 1893), known as Sid Daniels, was a British merchant seaman and the last surviving member of the crew of the RMS Titanic - According to his own account, all was smooth and quiet while he was sleeping in a bunk until one of the watchmen came down and said that they all had to put their life belts on and go up to the deck.. Daniels then went up to deck and awaited orders along with other crew members..They received orders to get all the women and children up to the deck and into their lifeboats.. When he finished his task, there was only one remaining lifeboat, which was a collapsible boat secured to the top of the wireless room and lashed down with varying lashings.. Someone asked for a pocket knife and Daniels obliged..Afterward, he went up near the bridge and looked from the port side over to the starboard side, where he saw the water level approaching the bridge.. He decided to do something as the water level reached his knees.. After jumping onto the rail, he dove into the water..Fearing that suction would take him down, he swam away..He saw something flash and swam toward what was the upturned lifeboat (collapsible 'B') that they had previously tried to cut adrift.. Daniels climbed on the hull and managed to sit up on the keel of the lifeboat..While on the boat, they said prayers and waited for help..Daniels said to an older man that he was tired and was going to sleep; but, the man kept him awake..Daniels later realised that if he had gone to sleep, he would not have ever woken up again, due to the cold..They sat on the overturned boat throughout the night, and toward dawn a ship was sighted..During World War I, Sidney Daniels joined the Royal Army Service Corps, but saw no direct combat, which angered him.. He returned home in 1915 and when interviewed by a local newspaper, he said that he couldn't help but laugh to think of all he had been through"..He then served in World War II for the merchant navy - Daniels died at his home in Portsmouth, on 25 May 1983, at the age of 89..Day 26The 7.8 Mw Sea of Japan EQ shakes northern Honshu with a maximum Mercalli Intensity of VIII (Severe)..A destructive tsunami is generated that leaves about 100 people dead..

The Emperor Arrives - Return of the Jedi Episode VI..

Dean was born in Branscombe, England, to Bertram Frank Dean and Georgette Eva Light..The name of the parish is probably Celtic in origin..It is made up of 2 words, "Bran" and "cwm".. Bran is a well established Celtic personal or tribal name that may also mean "black" or "crow black"..Millvina & Bertram were raised mostly on pension funds and educated in Southampton schools, including The Gregg School..Bertram at 2 months old, was also the youngest passenger aboard..The school, like many others holds non-uniform days for the BBC's Children in Need appeal and Comic Relief..It was not until Millvina was 8 years old, and her mother was planning to remarry, that Dean was told she had been a passenger on the Titanic..Dean worked for the British government during the Second World War and later as a purchaser for a local engineering firm.. Other careers she held were as a cartographer, a secretary, and an assistant to a tobacconist...Dean's parents decided to leave the UK and emigrate to Wichita, Kansas, where her father had relatives, and his cousin owned a tobacco shop that he was going to co-own..They were not supposed to be aboard the Titanic, but due to a coal strike, they were transferred onto it and boarded it as third-class passengers at Southampton, England..Dean was barely 2 months old when she boarded the ship.. Her father felt its collision with the iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912, and after investigating, returned to his cabin, telling his wife to dress the children and go up on deck.. Dean, her mother, and her brother were placed in Lifeboat 10 and were among the first third-class passengers to escape.. Her father, however, did not survive, and his body, if recovered, was never identified..97-year-old Dean died of pneumonia on the morning of 31 May 2009, 97 years and se7en weeks after the Titanic sailed, at a care home in Ashurst, Hampshire..In response to the escalating cost of Dean's healthcare, The Millvina Fund was set up in April 2009 by the Belfast, British, and International Titanic Societies with the exclusive aim of taking care of her nursing home bills..She never married and had no children.. Her father died on the Titanic; her mother died on 16 September 1975, aged 96; and her brother died on 14 April 1992, age 81, the 80th anniversary of the iceberg collision..She was cremated, and on 24 October 2009, her ashes were scattered from a launch at the docks in Southampton where the Titanic set sail..Winston Churchill for example had a great affection for Number 10...

Guglielmo Marconi..
Quote:
1st Marquis of Marconi (25 April 1874 – 20 July 1937) was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi's law and a radio telegraph system, and founder of The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company in the United Klingdom in 1897..He succeeded in making a commercial success of radio by innovating and building on the work of previous experimenters and physicists..Marconi was confirmed in the Catholic faith and became a devout member of the Church before his marriage to Maria ChrisTina in 1927..The company was a pioneer of wireless long distance communication & mass media broadcasting, eventually becoming one of the UKs most successful manufacturing companies..After a long decline, Bologna was reborn in the 5th century under Bishop Petronius.. According to legend, St. Petronius built the Church of S. Stefano..After the fall of Rome, Bologna was a frontier stronghold of the Exarchate of Ravenna in the Po plain and was defended by a line of walls which did not enclose most of the ancient ruined Roman city..

An employee of the Marconi Company..

There was a great deal of interest in radio waves in the physics community, but the interest was in radio as a scientific phenomenon, not in its potential as a communication method..Radio Wave 96.5 is a British Independent Local Radio station that serves the Blackpool & Fylde coast areas of Lancashire, owned and operated by Wireless Group, and the first record played was "Simply the Best" by Tina..Physicists generally looked on radio waves as an invisible form of light, a short range phenomenon which could only travel along a line of sight path, and thus its range was limited to the visual horizon like existing forms of visual signaling, making it unsuitable for long distance communication..The station also simulcasts hourly Sky News Radio bulletins at all other times..A breakthrough came that summer when Marconi found that much greater range could be achieved after he raised the height of his antenna and, borrowing from a technique used in wired telegraphy, grounding his transmitter and receiver..Maxwell noticed wavelike properties of light and similarities in electrical and magnetic observations..I always wondered how I'd feel if I ever saw you again..

Roger Waters - Radio Waves ..

The role played by Marconi Co. wireless in maritime rescues raised public awareness of the value of radio and brought fame to Marconi, particularly the sinkings of the RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912 and the RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915..RMS Titanic radio operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride were not employed by the White Star Line but by the Marconi International Marine Communication Company..After the sinking of the ocean liner on 15 April 1912, survivors were rescued by the RMS Carpathia of the Cunard Line..Also employed by the Marconi Company was David Sarnoff, who later headed RCA trademarks are used by SME and Technicolor, which licenses the RCA brand name to other companies such as Voxx International and TCL Corporation for products descended from that common ancestor..Wireless communications were reportedly maintained for 72 hours between Carpathia and Sarnoff, but Sarnoff's involvement has been questioned by some modern historians..When Carpathia docked in New York, Marconi went aboard with a reporter from The New York Times to talk with Bride, the surviving operator..On 18 June 1912, Marconi gave evidence to the Court of Inquiry into the loss of Titanic regarding the marine telegraphy's functions and the procedures for emergencies at sea..Britain's Postmaster-general summed up, referring to the Titanic disaster: "Those who have been saved, have been saved through one man, Mr. Marconi...and his marvelous invention"...Marconi was offered free passage on Titanic before she sank, but had taken Lusitania 3 days earlier..As his Daughter Degna later explained, he had paperwork to do and preferred the public stenographer aboard that vessel...

Arrow I Saw Three Ships

Bahía Blanca Coat of arms..
Quote:
Constance Jessop (5 May 1971) was an ocean liner stewardess & nurse who is known for surviving the disastrous sinkings of both the RMS Titanic and her sister ship, the HMHS Britannic, in 1912 and 1916 respectively..In addition, she had been on board the RMS Olympic, the third sister ship, when it collided with a British warship in 1911..Born on 1 October 1887, near Bahía Blanca, Argentina, Violet Constance Jessop was the eldest daughter of Irish immigrants, William & Katherine Jessop.. She was the first of nine children, six of whom survived.. Jessop spent much of her childhood caring for her younger siblings..She became very ill as a child with TB, which she survived despite doctors' predictions that her illness would be fatal.. At age 16, Jessop's father died due to complications from surgery and her family moved to England, where she attended a convent school and cared for her youngest sister while her mother was away at sea working as a stewardess..At age 21, her first position was with the Royal Mail Line aboard the Orinoco in 1908..

Violet in her Voluntary Aid Detachment ..

In 1910, Jessop started working as a stewardess for the White Star vessel, RMS Olympic..A luxury ship that was the largest civilian liner at that time.. Jessop was on board on 20 September 1911, when the Olympic left from Southampton and collided with the British warship, HMS Hawke..There were no fatalities and despite damage, the ship was able to make it back to port without sinking..Jessop chose not to discuss this collision in her memoirs - Jessop boarded the RMS Titanic as a stewardess on 10 April 1912, at age 25..She watched as the crew loaded the lifeboats..She was later ordered into lifeboat 16, and, as the boat was being lowered, one of the Titanic's officers gave her a baby to look after..During the First World War, Jessop served as a stewardess for the British Red Cross..On the morning of 21 November 1916, she was on board the HMHS Britannic, a White Star liner that had been converted into a hospital ship, when it sank in the Aegean Sea due to an unexplained explosion..The Britannic sank within 57 minutes, killing 30 people.. British authorities hypothesized that the ship was either struck by a torpedo or hit a mine planted by German forces..Conspiracy theories have circulated that suggest the British were responsible for sinking their own ship..While the Britannic was sinking, Jessop and other passengers were nearly killed by the boat's propellers that were sucking lifeboats under the stern..Jessop returned to work for the White Star Line in 1920..After the war, Jessop continued to work for the White Star Line, before joining the Red Star Line and then the Royal Mail Line again..During her tenure with Red Star, Jessop went on two around the world cruises on that company's largest ship, the Belgenland..In her late thirties, Jessop had a brief marriage, and in 1950 she retired to Great Ashfield, Suffolk..

The Turn of the Screw + The Governess Confronts Miss Jessel ..

Bahía Blanca means "White Bay"..The bay (estuary) was seen by Ferdinand Magellan during his first circumnavigation of the world on the orders of Charles I of Spain, in 1520, looking for a canal connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean along the coasts of South America..Bahía Blanca is an important trans-shipping and commercial center, handling the large export trade of grains and wool from the southern area of Buenos Aires Province, oil from Neuquén Province, and fruit from the Río Negro Valley..Bahía Blanca has a total of three railway stations, with only Bahía Blanca Sud currently active for passenger services..The city is a developed one including cultural and educational aspects..There are several Non-governmental organizations such as The International Red Cross, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs etc etc, strengthening links between them and those already established with the Argentine society..The illiteracy rate of the city, as well as the neonatal and infant mortality rates, are amongst the lowest in the country..A local political crisis in March 2006 resulted in the Mayor's request for leave, which was granted by the City Council on 27 March 2006..The vast majority of the inhabitants of the city are Roman Catholics...The city is the seat of several foreign consulates including the Spanish, Italian and Chilean..There are also Honorary Consulates of France, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands..In James's blockbuster Titanic, a fictional counterpart to Jessop was written in by Cameron, named Lucy..The character of Jessop is also featured in the stageplay Iceberg – Right Ahead!..Violet is a given name for girls which comes from the eponymous flower..Violent (especially of an emotion or a destructive natural force) very strong or phowerful - Lent (Quadragesima: Fortieth) is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday..In the Northern Hemisphere, the astronomical Vernal equinox (between 19 and 21 March) is taken to mark the first day of spring...

Arrow California Über Alles

CALIFORNIA MM GIRLS - The Beach Boyz ..
Quote:
Californian was launched on 26 November 1901 and completed her sea trials on 23 January 1902..The SS Californian was a British Leyland Line steamship that is best known for being in the vicinity of the RMS Titanic when it sank on April 15, 1912, and for failing to come to its aid..Californian was a British steamship owned by the Leyland Line, part of J.P. Morgan's International Mercantile Marine Co..Stanley Lord, who had commanded Californian since 1911, was her captain when she left Liverpool, England on April 5, 1912 on her way to Bosston, Massachusetts.. She was not carrying any passengers on this voyage..On Sunday April 14, at 18:30 ship's time, Californian's only wireless operator, Cyril Evans, signalled to the Antillian that III large icebergs were 5 miles to the south..Titanic's wireless operator Harold Bride also received the warning and delivered it to the ship's bridge a few minutes later..Californian encountered a large ice field at 22:20 ship's time, and Captain Lord decided to stop the ship and wait until morning before proceeding further.. Before leaving the bridge, he thought he saw a ship's light away to the eastward but could not be sure it was not just a rising star..I find that the district he named is in the extreme east of the country, just on the borders of III states, Transylvania, Moldavia, and Bukovina, in the midst of the Carpathian mountains; one of the wildest and least known portions of Europe..

SS Californian on the morning after Titanic sank..

Titanic's on-duty wireless operator, Jack Phillips, was busy clearing a backlog of passengers' messages with the wireless station at Cape Race, Newfoundland, 800 miles (1,300 km) away, at the time..Third Officer Charles Groves of the Californian testified to the British inquiry that at 23:10 ship's time, he had seen the lights of another ship come into view 10 or 12 miles away, 3.5 points above Californian's starboard beam..Slightly after midknight, Second Officer Herbert Stone took watch from Groves..He tried signalling her with the Morse lamp, also without success..The maximum transmission rate possible via flashing lights is no more than 14 wpm..Apprentice officer James Gibson, who had been doing the Norse signalling, testified that at 00:55, Stone told him he had observed 5 rockets in the sky above the nearby ship..Gibson testified that Stone had expressed unease to him about the situation..By 02:00, the ship appeared to be leaving the area..A few minutes later, Gibson informed Captain Lord as such and that eight white rockets had been seen.. Lord asked whether he was sure of the colour..Gibson said yes and left..At 02:20, Titanic sank.. At 03:40, Stone and Gibson, still sharing the middle watch, spotted rockets to the south..At 04:16, Chief Officer George F. Stewart relieved Stone, and almost immediately noticed, coming into view from the south, a brilliantly lit, four-masted steamship with one funnel; Carpathia arrived on the scene shortly after 04:00..Californian was sighted at 06:00 by SS Mount Temple steaming from the north..Carpathia was just finishing picking up the last of Titanic's survivors.. After communicating with Californian, Carpathia left the area, leaving Californian to search for any other survivors.. However, Californian only found scattered wreckage and empty lifeboats..My friend Welcome to the Carpathians..I am anxiously expecting you..

SM U 35 cruising in the Mediterranean..

A United States Senate inquiry into the sinking of the RMS Titanic started on April 19, 1912, the day Californian arrived unnoticed in Boston.. Initially, the world was unaware of her & her part in the Titanic disaster..On April 22, the inquiry discovered that a ship near Titanic had failed to respond to the distress signals..The identity of the ship was unknown..When reporters asked Lord about his exact position the night of the disaster, he refused to respond, calling such information "state secrets"..After the newspaper revelations on April 23, the U.S. Senate inquiry subpoenaed Gill, as well as Captain Lord, and others from Californian..The US Senate inquiry and British Wreck Commissioner's inquiry into the sinking both concluded that the Californian could have saved many or all of the lives that were lost, had a prompt response been mounted to the Titanic's distress rockets.. The U.S. Senate inquiry was particularly critical of the vessel's Captain, Stanley Lord, calling his inaction during the disaster "reprehensible"..Californian was later sunk herself, on 9 November 1915, by the German submarine U-35, in the Eastern Mediterranean during World War I, while en route from Salonica to Marseilles, south-southwest of Cape Matapan, Greece, killing one person..She also sank on 4 October 1916, the French transport ship SS Gallia, leading to the death of between 600 and 1,800 men..On 14 October 1918, Kptlt..Heino von Heimburg took command and U-35 was transferred to Kiel..After World War I ended, U-35 was transferred to England and docked in Blyth from 1919 to 1920, then broken up - The place-name 'Blyth' is first attested in 1130 as 'Blida', and takes its name from the river Blyth - William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton (born William Jefferson Blythe III; August 19, 1946) is an American politician who served as the 42nd President of the US from 1993 to 2001..Blythe Bay is an anchorage at the southeast side of Desolation Island, lying north of Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica..Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight, Will?..I had only a couple of glasses of this, and nothing else...

Lightbulb Daughters of the Titan

V2 Titania's southern hemisphere..
Quote:

Una Merkel with Phyllis Brooks & Gary Cooper at a Brisbane..

Titania is the largest of the moons of Uranus and the 8th largest moon in the Solar System at a diameter of 1,578 kilometres (981 mi)..Discovered by William Herschel in 1787, Titania is named after the queen of the fairies in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream..Its orbit lies inside Uranus's magnetosphere..All of Uranus's moons are named after characters created by William Shakespeare or Alexander Pope..Because Uranus orbits the Sun almost on its side, and its moons orbit in the planet's equatorial plane, they (including Titania) are subject to an extreme seasonal cycle..Both northern & southern poles spend 42 years in a complete darkness, and another 42 years in continuous sunlight, with the sun rising close to the zenith over one of the poles at each solstIce.. It orbits the Sun at a distance of about 2.8 billion kilometers (1.7 billion miles) and completes one orbit every 84 years..Feature - Imogen (Cymbeline) Length (diameter), 28 km - Jessica (The Merchant of Venice) 64 km - Lucetta (The Two Gentlemen of Verona) 58 km - Marina (Pericles, Prince of Tyre) 40 km - Gertrude (Hamlet) 326 km - Iras (Antony & Cleopatra) 33 km ..

Charon's crossing by Alexander Litovchenko..

The Uranian system has been studied up close only once, by the spacecraft Voyager 2 in January 1986..It took several images of Titania, which allowed mapping of about 40% of its surface - Titanium is a chemical element with symbol Ti and atomic number 22 - Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson contains a description of a colony on Titania, where humans have adapted to the low gravity and light levels..Blue Mars takes its title from the stage of terraforming that has allowed atmospheric pressure and temperature to increase so that liquid water can exist on the planet's surface, forming rivers and seas..As Earth is heavily flooded by the sudden melting of the Antarctic ice cap, the once mighty metanats are brought to their knees; as the Praxis Corporation paves a new way of "democratic businesses"..Martian scientists and engineers are soon put to the task of creating asteroid cities; where small planetoids of the Belt are hollowed out, given a spin to produce gravity, and a mini-sun is created to produce light & heat..The presence of a magnetic field at Uranus was not known until Voyager's arrival - Radiation belts at Uranus were found to be of an intensity similar to those at Saturn..

Cleopatra-1912..

15 April 1912 - Earth Moon Waning crescent Visible: 5% Age: 28 days - Una Merkel (December 10, 1903 – January 2, 1986) was an American stage, film, radio, and TV actress, born in Covington, Kentucky, but in her early childhood, she lived in many of the Southern states due to her father's job as a traveling salesman..Stewart Iron Works was established in 1862 and became the largest iron fence maker in the world..Because of her strong resemblance to actress Lillian Gish, Merkel was offered a part as Gish's youngest sister in a silent film called World Shadows.."Matrimony is baloney..She'll be wanting alimony in a year or so./Still they go and shuffle, shuffle off to Buffalo"..Merkel appeared in both film versions of The Merry Widow, playing different roles in each..On March 5, 1945, Merkel was nearly killed when her mother Bessie, with whom she was sharing an apartment in New York City, committed suicide by gassing herself..On March 4, 1952, nearly se7en years to the day that Merkel's mother committed suicide, Merkel overdosed on sleeping pills..She was found unconscious by a nurse who was caring for her at the time and remained in a coma for a day..Her final film role was opposite Elvis Presley in Spinout..Merkel was a lifelong practicing Methodist - In Greek mythology, Styx is a deity and a river that forms the boundary between Earth and the Underworld...

Question Did Titanic Really Sink

Wreck of the Titan..
Quote:

British Pathé..

When the Titanic was pictured while being built it had 14 evenly spaced portholes but when it left Southampton on doomed maiden voyage on April 10th 1912 it had 16 unevenly spaced portholes.

Though J.P. Morgan’s link to RMS Titanic was seemingly indirect, one particular theory places the business pioneer at the centre. It was a fact that J.P. Morgan was set to board RMS Titanic and join the elite passengers on her maiden voyage. However, in a twist of fate, he changed his plans last minute...The theory draws its ideas from J.P. Morgan’s involvement in the creation of the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve owned J.P. Morgan’s International Mercantile Marine, which owned the White Star Line.. however they were spotted on a motoring holiday in Wales..

Titanic Re-Release Trailer (2017) Movieclips Trailers..

At the time of the disaster, the market – and the media – was still in the early stages of using wireless telegraphy to communicate with ships at sea. Lloyd’s was a significant contributor to the new technology and, with the help of inventor Guglielmo Marconi, had set up signal stations from Cornwall to Canada so that vessels crossing the Atlantic could communicate with land. Some thought the great ship had survived…The Lloyd’s signal station in Halifax, Nova Scotia, was called Cape Race, and was the first to hear the news that the ship was sinking. Other signal stations issued conflicting reports, resulting in great confusion. Two days later, some newspapers still thought the Titanic had survived, and was being towed to Halifax. Lloyd’s, however, understood the situation. Underwriters began to trade ‘overdue insurance’ – a form of reinsurance commonly purchased after a marine incident...The reason behind people thinking that the ship is not really Titanic takes us back to the 20th September 1911 when the Olympic collided with the HMS Hawke just off the coast of the Isle of Wight...

Disaster on the St Lawrence..

The Type UB I was a class of small coastal submarines (U-boats) built in Germany at the beginning of the First World War..Boats of this design were also operated by the Austro-Hungarian Navy..The group is sometimes known as the UB-1 class after SM UB-1, the class leader.. In the Austro-Hungarian Navy, it was called the U-10 class..SM U-62 was one of the 329 submarines serving in the Imperial German Navy in World War I.. U-62 was engaged in the naval warfare and took part in the First Battle of the Atlantic..On 8 March 1917, SM U-62 sank the coal freighter Storstad, the ship that had rammed and sunk the RMS Empress of Ireland ocean liner in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history..On 7 August 1918, she torpedoed the French armoured cruiser Dupetit-Thouars, which sank with the loss of 13 of her crew..After WW I A.G. Weser continued very soon in shipbuilding and was one of the great German manufacturers of warships.

SM U-58 blizniaczy do U-62 ..

SS Storstad is best known for accidentally ramming and sinking the ocean liner RMS Empress of Ireland in 1914, killing over 1,000 people..She was built on the Isherwood longitudinal framing principle, and at the time of her launch was the largest vessel to be constructed in this manner..Upon delivery, Storstad departed on 31 January 1911 for her maiden voyage from Newcastle for Narvik and arrived there on February 4..In November 1911 the vessel was chartered for one trip to South America by the Barber Line..The ship arrived in Liverpool on May 4 and upon discharging her cargo, sailed back to North America to resume her iron ore and coal trade in Canada..On 28 May 1914 at 16:27 RMS Empress of Ireland departed from Quebec City with 1,057 passengers and 420 crew members on board bound for Liverpool..One of Rimouski's primary economic fields is its maritime sector..Around 01:55 Empress of Ireland crew suddenly saw Storstad appearing out of fog and heading directly for them..14 minutes later, Empress of Ireland sank into the St. Lawrence River, taking with her over 1,000 people..Due to very quick sinking, only 7 lifeboats were lowered from the liner..SS Lady Evelyn, came by later to help with the rescue and took the survivors to Rimouski..One of the town's main tourist attractions is the Site historique maritime de la Pointe-au-Père - On 8 March 1917, the ship was nearing the end of a long voyage from Buenos Aires to Rotterdam with a cargo of grain, having stopped only at Gibraltar for coal.. Thomas Andersen, still Storstad's captain, had taken the precaution of obtaining from the German Consul at Buenos Aires a declaration that Storstad would be given "safe conduct" through all waters, and that the ship would not be interfered in any way by German U-boats..

Hi everybody!
This topic is mainly about the end of these two ships, but where can I get materials and information about their origin? In what factories, in what dock, the origin of materials, how many workers, how long was the real production time. The materials provided by Wikipedia do not satisfy me. Is there any serious research on the topic? Which welding methods were used and when these welding methods actually came in (patents, industries, approximate dates). Position of the hull during welding (as precise location as possible)? Traditional approaches do not provide any accurate information. But the exact documentation should be available for such large businesses. And verifiable and reliable. According to the current data, it seems to me that some boat hulls appeared from thin air and were made seaworthy by the then-day repairs. Of course, this is an absurd impression. Any help is appropriate to disperse it.

I'm glad this thread is still going (just about.

There are numerous Titanic related websites out there - official historic and heritage sites as well as independent blogs or forums. Whether these sites provide useful and highly accurate historic documents regarding Titanics (and Olympic) build, records of workers, etc I've no idea. I feel much of the info and those sites derive mostly from hearsay and words of amateurs mainly parroting what they've read in Titanic books and other literature you can find readily available. There was a curious and thought provoking conversation on one site I visited a while back talking about the famous photo of Titanic as she is about to depart from Southampton on her maiden voyage. One person was puzzled as to why this photo appears to show Titanic being moored off of her mooring lines (not sure if that's the correct term as I'm no ship expert), yet they were puzzled by the way she is being lead into the dock side (someone said it looks like she's just anchored in). Another odd thing they noticed in this photo was the lack of wellwishers on the dock. Not only that but they mentioned that close to Titanic in the harbour was another smaller vessel which was still there after Titanic had sunk, yet, they claim this ship is nowhere to be seen, and they claim it shouldve been visible behind Titanic, albeit at least partially seen. I don't think Cameron's version of the scene includes this ship either. I wonder if this famous photo is fake and the odd procedure of the workers handling the mooring line is a sign of image tampering or fabrication.

I'm not sure if there is a lack of records re: how the ship was welded together. From my knowledge, Titanic and other ships of that time where riveted together. Welding had been invented, but it wasn't widely used at the time; again, this is what I've read.

The problems with those who believe Titanic was switched with Olympic is that they don't thoroughly research their theories and look at what would've been changed for the switch to be pulled off convincingly. Not one researcher ever lists or points out the dozens and dozens of things on both ships that would've had to have been swapped/changed. Not just altering port holes and changing the prom to open or closed, changing the lettering and numbers, but also very subtle changes too. It would've been near impossible for the workers to change all of these differences that each ship had in the time they had.

Yes, of course. This is what interests me: the ways in which the hull was assembled.
1. Riveting?
2. Or welding (it seems impossible) and riveting?
My question was driven by a dispute with a theorist who believed the hull was partially welded. I was looking for materials for my objections, and I also found them. In our electronic age often fail to understand what technologies were used in the early 20th century, and what these technologies enable.

The reason for riveting was to give men jobs which was a boost in employment in those days, I believe different parts of the ship had been welded also they did have a riveting gun which was huge and clumsy only to be used when riveters could not go, Titanic was then considered state of the art when it came to ship building of the time.

Encyclopedia Titanica should be a good place to start for info on the ships build, etc. Don't rely on wikipedia for everything, especially specific and detailed records and info. Go to a dedicated or specific site or forum.

Regarding the thread I recalled seeing on a Titanic forum, inthinj this maybe it:

https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.or...ference.35150/

Anyone know what it is the posters are trying figure out?.

The "leaving Southampton" photo I mentioned is the one with the front of Titanic facing the photographer; an elderly man sits to the right looking at Titanic, whilst dock workers appear to be mooring her off. No sign of any well wisher's, but they could be out of view or on the other side of the crane. I've noticed that this well known photo is rarely or never seen in its full uncropped original view, and its always mostly shown in books very dark and saturated. However, I do have a very clear, fairly hi res, and pretty much uncropped copy of this photo showing the full width of the image from left to right (as it would've looked on the negative). Zooming into the image at the image size level you can clearly see the name Titanic.
