A vintage guitar saved from a council tip for the sum of £5 turned out to be a 100-year-old instrument made by a Spanish master and has been described as the ‘find of a lifetime’ by the man who restored it.

Guitar maker Shaun Newman used his skills to bring the guitar back to a playable condition. It was was built by Salvador Ibanez, a celebrated Spanish maker.

Shaun, from Crediton, Devon said the guitar was probably made between 1898 and 1906 in the Ibanez workshop in San Francisco, Valencia.

The guitar was badly damaged when it was brought to him with a large split running almost the length of one side and other cracks.

At least 28 people - including 22 children - have been killed in a bus crash in Switzerland, police say.

Another 24 children were injured in the accident in the Valais canton, near the border with Italy.

The bus - which was carrying children from Belgium - crashed into the wall of a tunnel. Both drivers were killed.

The children from the Belgian villages of Lommel and Heverlee were returning home after a skiing holiday. There were 52 people on the bus.

Some of the injured were later flown to hospitals in Lausanne and Berne.

A helpline for families has been set up, and many parents are expected to arrive in Switzerland shortly.

A Delta Airlines plane has slid off a runway in Georgia

A Delta Airlines jet has slid off the end of the runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the US state of Georgia.

The plane was testing its brakes by accelerating on the runway and then attempting to stop.

However, the brakes failed and the plane ended up tilted at an angle at the end of the airfield.

TOKYO – A strong earthquake has shaken northern Japan, and regional tsunami advisories have been issued.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Wednesday evening's earthquake was 6.8 preliminary magnitude off the coast. A tsunami of about a half-meter was expected for Aomori and Iwate prefectures.

Iwate was in the region heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami.

The epicenter was about 146 miles south of Kushiro, Japan, on Hokkaido, Japan's northern island. It was a relatively shallow 16 miles from the ocean floor.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said there was no threat there or across the Pacific.
