David Bowie hailed as 'ULTIMATE animal hero' for support of illegal whaling protestors
DAVID Bowie is being hailed as the ultimate animal hero after allowing one of his classics to become the battle hymn of whaling protestors.

http://www.express.co.uk/news/nature...ghter-The-Cove

Thousands of demonstrators will be singing Heroes outside the Japanese embassy this weekend after another mass slaughter of marine wildlife. Bowie gave permission for his 1977 anthem to be the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning documentary, The Cove, which highlights the shame of Japan’s annual Taiji slaughter.

The way the waters of Taiji turn red after whale and dolphin slaughters has become a symbol for global anti-whaling protests.

Today there are fears that another mass slaughter has taken place behind screens in Taiji. Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project reported how an entire pod of up to 40 striped dolphins had been slaughtered during the early hours.

This is the heart-wrenching moment a grieving male kangaroo cradles the head of his lifeless female companion as she reaches for her joey one last time underneath the shade of a mango tree.
Evan Switzer noticed the touching marsupial interaction while going for a walk on bushland property in River Heads, a coastal town close to Fraser Island in Queensland, on Monday morning.
'I saw the male pick up the female, he looked like he was just trying to get her up and see what was wrong with her,' he told Daily Mail Australia.
'He would lift her up and she wouldn't stand she'd just fall to the ground, he'd nudge her, stand besides her ... it was a pretty special thing, he was just mourning the loss of his mate.'

interesting piece from the original Magna Carta 1215 :

"(48) All evil customs relating to forests and warrens, foresters, warreners, sheriffs and their servants, or river-banks and their wardens, are at once to be investigated in every county by twelve sworn knights of the county, and within forty days of their enquiry the evil customs are to be abolished completely and irrevocably. But we, or our chief justice if we are not in England, are first to be informed."

Government to Kill 900 Wild Bison to Protect Cattle Rancher Profits

Each year, thousands of wild animals, including bears, coyotes, and foxes, are killed because they’re considered a threat to the livestock industry. In the United States alone, 2 million total wild animals are killed each year.

A new Wall Street Journal article highlights the ill effects of cattle grazing on bison living in and around Yellowstone National Park:

Government agencies aim to kill or remove up to 900 wild bison from Yellowstone National Park this winter as part of a continuing effort to reduce the animals’ annual migration into Montana by driving down their population.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Intends To Terminate The Illegal Ivory Trade

http://www.ewao.com/a/arnold-schwarz...l-ivory-trade/

Everyone knows about the plight that the ivory trade has had on the elephant and rhino populations. In some areas the poaching of ivory is so severe, that it has been estimated that if we continue down this path, that in 10 years, one of our majestic creatures, the African Elephant will become extinct.

Seeing really how bad this massive worldwide crisis has gotten, renowned bodybuilder, actor, governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has decided to join the battle against the ivory trade and joined up with the Wildlife Conservation Society’s 96 Elephants campaign.

In a report by One Earth, if we publicly destroy ivory stockpiles it would then take tusks and trinkets off the market while sending the ivory traffickers an important message that states that the governments of the world look to see this horrible trade demolished.

Hong Kong announces ivory ban

Posted on January 13, 2016 by Kevin Heath

http://wildlifenews.co.uk/2016/01/ho...ces-ivory-ban/

All eyes may have been on the US with President Obama delivering his last state of the nation address but the leader of Hong Kong was also delivering his annual speech and it offered hope and a future for elephants. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying in his annual policy address announced that Hong Kong will be joining with China in introducing a ban on ivory trading.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said “The Government is very concerned about the illegal poaching of elephants in Africa. It will kick start legislative procedures as soon as possible to ban the import and export of elephant hunting trophies and actively explore other appropriate measures, such as enacting legislation to further ban the import and export of ivory and phase out the local ivory trade, and imposing heavier penalties on smuggling and illegal trading of endangered species. Meanwhile, the Government will strengthen enforcement and take rigorous action against the smuggling and illegal trade in ivory.”

While no date has been set or timeline offered the announcement is important in tackling the plight of the elephants. It will almost certainly lead to another slump in the value of ivory as speculators continue to dump their stockpiles as the final large market is set to close to them.

A new study by the University of Sydney has revealed that it was starchy carbohydrates that were fundamental in the evolution of the human brain – not meat.

The study published in the Quarterly Review of Biology challenges the previously false belief that human brains were able to grow into what they are today because of increased meat consumption.

This new research is a knock-out blow for those who have championed the paleo diet – a diet which advises people to abstain from starchy grains and vegetables.

Professor Jennie Brand-Miller who co-authored the study said “Global increases in obesity and diet related metabolic disease have led to enormous interest in ancestral or palaeolithic diets”.

“Up until now, there has been a heavy focus on the role of animal protein in the development of the human brain over the last two million years. The importance of carbohydrate, particularly in the form of starch-rich plant foods, has been largely overlooked. Our research suggests that dietary carbohydrates, along with meat, were essential for the evolution of modern big-brained humans”

Professor Brand-Miller went on to say: “The evidence suggests that Palaeolithic humans would not have evolved on today’s ‘Paleo’ diet.”

Breaking the Food Chain Myth

Claiming to be at the top of the food chain has become a popular justification for eating animal products and an affirmation of our ability to violently dominate everything and everyone. Yet justifications for needless violence that draw on notions of power and supremacy are based on the philosophy of “Might makes right” — the principle behind the worst atrocities and crimes of human history.

According to French researchers, as people become wealthier, they tend to eat more meat and fewer plant foods. Wealth, status and privilege are associated with eating more meat and the belief that we are at the “top of the food chain.” This association has led to massive increases in meat consumption in many developing countries including China, India, Brazil and South Africa.

Those who believe there is scientific basis for the claim that humans are at the top of some food chain should consider this: in 2013, for the first time ever, ecologists used a statistical method of calculating a species’s trophic level (its level or rank in a food chain) based on its diet. Their findings, published in the Proceedings of the Natural Academy of Sciences, scored humans at 2.21 on a scale of 1 to 5, roughly equal to an anchovy or a pig. On the low end of the scale are primary producers like plants, and on the higher end are pure apex predators (animals that eat only meat and have few or no predators of their own, such as tigers, crocodiles or boa constrictors).

Unfortunately, this study doesn’t look critically at the claim that belonging to some food chain falsely implies that modern humans are living in the natural world as hunter-gatherers, competing with other species for food, as if our only choices are based on what we can find and hunt. In other words, it ignores the important moral distinction that comes from our ability to choose from a wide variety of food options, in contrast to other animals in the wild who have no choice but to eat what is available to them.

We humans are not at the top of anything. We are merely part of an interdependent web of life that forms complex yet fragile ecosystems. We choose to either participate in the protection of these natural systems, or to destroy them at our own peril. The concept of a food chain is a human construct that imposes a rigid and competitive hierarchy among species, rather than a good faith understanding of the complexity of the ecosystems to which we belong. Selectively appealing to biological determinism also ignores the fact that we are moral agents. By choosing plant foods, we can get our nutrients through primary sources of nourishment, in the most environmentally friendly and resource-efficient way possible, minimizing our harm to other animals, humans and the planet.

Rescued Abused Pit Bull Who Lost Half Her Face Now Inspires the World With Her Story

http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/k...res-the-world/

Khaleesi is an abused Pit Bull who came into the spotlight last year as the victim of shocking animal abuse. The poor pup lost half of her face and also suffered damage to her back. When she was finally turned in to Orange County Animal Control, many people thought that they would have to give up on this spunky little lady, but that is when Passion 4 Pits stepped in and changed her life.

Passion 4 Pits is a non-profit dog rescue located in St Petersburg, Florida that specializes in pulling Pit Bulls from high-kill shelters. Many of the dogs that they rescue are in need of serious medical attention, which makes fundraising an essential part of their operation. Thanks to their help, Khaleesi has had the first of several reconstructive surgeries that will make it easier for her to breathe, walk and live a normal, happy life.

Myanmar Feeds China’s Pangolin Appetite
New study shows open availability of world’s most trafficked mammal in town bordering China.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2...e-trafficking/

Myanmar and pangolins. Not words I normally think of together. That’s why the recent report by TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring NGO, on pangolin trafficking in Myanmar took me by surprise. While I’ve followed the patterns of pangolin smuggling over the years, Myanmar is rarely highlighted. Until now.

TRAFFIC’s study, published in the journal Global Ecology and Conservation, exposes how the country is both a significant source and a transit hub.

Dagga for pets in pain?
A US veterinarian says pets could benefit enormously, and see their life extended, with a dose of medical marijuana. But are lawmakers ready for this big step and how safe is it?

http://www.health24.com/Lifestyle/Pe...s-vet-20130606

Until she introduced "magic cheese" to her sick and ageing bulldog three years ago, Laura Bugni-Daniel watched him suffer for two years.

He'd spend his days lying down or throwing up.

Today, at age 14, he plays like a puppy through the day and he sleeps at night, soothed not by magic but by the dose of marijuana in the cheese.

Bugni-Daniel is part of a growing movement to give medical marijuana to pets in pain.

Many urge caution until there's better science behind it. But stories abound of changes in sick and dying pets after they've been given cannabis — even though it isn't a proven painkiller for man or beast.

It's also an illicit drug under federal law, despite being legal for people in 23 states and the District of Columbia.

Leading the charge is Los Angeles veterinarian Doug Kramer who felt it was his duty to speak out. "I grew tired of euthansing pets when I wasn't doing everything I could to make their lives better," he said.

Pot in final weeks eases pain

Pot eased his Siberian husky's pain during her final weeks, after she had surgery to remove tumours. Not only did the dog stop whimpering, but she started eating, gaining weight and meeting him at the door again.

It gave him six extra weeks with his dog before he had to euthanize her, he said. It wasn't a cure, but he thinks it freed her of pain and improved her last days.

Some other vets said they share Kramer's view on marijuana, but they wouldn't talk on the record for fear of arrest or retaliation.

Kramer hasn't lost any clients over his view, but he was asked not to return to some of the clinics where he volunteered or relieved other vets because of concerns over the negative image his advocacy creates, he said.

Dr Duncan Lascelles, a professor of surgery and pain management at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, thought about studying marijuana a decade ago. He didn't, not for lack of interest, but because the timing was wrong.

"I have been considering looking at that field again because I think it does have a lot of potential," he said.

Puppy-throwing Marine is removed from Corps

June 13, 2008 -- Updated 1420 GMT (2220 HKT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. Marine videotaped throwing a puppy over a cliff while on patrol in Iraq has been kicked out of the Corps, and a second Marine involved has been disciplined, according to a statement released by the Marines.

Lance Cpl. David Motari, based in Hawaii with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, is being "processed for separation" and received non-judicial punishment, officials said in the statement Wednesday night. The Marine Corps would not specify what that punishment was because of privacy regulations.

The statement said Motari received the punishment for his role in the "episode which generated international attention."

The incident appeared on the Internet web site YouTube in March, sparking outrage from animal rights groups around the world.

In the video, Motari is seen throwing the dog off a cliff as it yelps.

A second Marine, San Diego-based Sgt. Crismarvin Banez Encarnacion, received non-judicial punishment as well.

Rescue Pig Can't Stop Running ... Until She Feels Her New Blanket

https://www.thedodo.com/rescue-pig-l...575892970.html

Piper the piglet started life abandoned in the cold, all alone with no one to love her. Since being rescued, Piper has been given everything she could ever want — and she's just a little overexcited about it all.

Three weeks ago, a Tennessee family known for rescuing pigs got a call about a piglet in need of a home. The family immediately opened up their home to Piper, and no one could be happier about it — especially Piper.

Piper LOVES to run around and play, but she does have one weakness ... blankets. Extra soft, snuggly blankets are something that Piper simply cannot resist ...
