Arrow Gampopa

Drikung Kagyu or Drigung Kagyu (Wylie: 'bri-kung bka'-brgyud) is one of the eight "minor" lineages of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. "Major" here refers to those Kagyu lineages founded by the immediate disciples of Gampopa (1079-1153) while "minor" refers to all the lineages founded by disciples of Phagmo Drupa (1110-1170),1 of the 3 main disciples of Gampopa...

Gampopa, a physician from Dagpo region in S. Tibet, was the foremost student of the Tibetan Buddhist teacher Milarepa. Gampopa was renowned for the clarity of his perception and his knowledge of both Kadampa and, later, Mahamudra methods..Another name for Gampopa was Ü-pa Tönpa.. "Ü" is central Tibet, and "pa" means "person," so "Ü-pa" means a person who comes from central Tibet, and "Tönpa" means "teacher"...

In the opening segment, the narrator describes the spiritual dimensions of life in this nation on top of the world. Its first inhabitants were nomads. Due to the harsh elements and the impermanence of life, they turned inward for peace. The Buddhism that developed in Tibet was organized around meditation and other practices and rituals. At one point, there were 6,000 monasteries, and one in every six males was a monk. Life in this country of prayer wheels and prayer flags literally revolved around the practices of the people...According to the Nyingmapa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dzogchen masters Manjushrimitra and Shrisimha were already active in the Tantric milieu in India independently. However, Manushrimitra, a learned scholar of Brahman origin, was evidently an adherent of the Yogachara school before his becoming a disciple of the mysterious Prahevajra or Garab Dorje (dga'-rab rdo-rje) from the country of Uddiyana (Eastern Afghanistan). It should also be recalled that his disciple Shrisimha was said to have born and resided for some time in China (more likely Chinese Central Asia, or, more precisely, Burma, as Chogyal Namkhai Norbu told in a talk he had June 15, 2010) before coming to India. And that the latter's disciple Vimalamitra visited China (or Central Asia) before and after he came to Tibet and transmitted the Dzogchen teachings to his disciples at Samye Monastery...

Quote:
Kālī (Sanskrit: काली ), also known as Kālikā (Sanskrit: कालिका), is the Hindu goddess associated with empowerment, shakti. The name Kali comes from kāla, which means black, time, death, lord of death, Shiva. Since Shiva is called Kāla—the eternal time—Kālī, his consort, also means "Time" or "Death" (as in time has come).. Hence, Kāli is the Goddess of Time and Change..Kālī is represented as the consort of Lord Shiva, on whose body she is often seen standing. Shiva lies in the path of Kali, whose foot on Shiva subdues her anger. She is the fierce aspect of the goddess Durga (Parvati)..Kālī is the feminine form of kālam ("black, dark coloured").. Kāla primarily means "time" but also means "black" in honor of being the first creation before light itself. Kālī means "the black one" and refers to her being the entity of "time" or "beyond time...
Vajrayana distinguishes 3 types of woman in all:

The “real woman” (karma mudra). She is a real human partner. According to tantric doctrine she belongs to the “realm of desire”.

The “imaginary woman” or “spirit woman” (inana mudra). She is summonsed by the yogi’s meditative imagination and only exists there or in his fantasy. The inana mudra is placed in the “realm of forms”.

The “inner woman” (maha mudra). She is the woman internalized via the tantric praxis, with no existence independent of the yogi. She is not even credited with the reality of an imagined form, therefore she counts as a figure from the “formless realm”...

Quote:
All 3 types of woman are termed mudra. This word originally meant ‘seal’, ‘stamp’, or ‘letter of the alphabet’. It further indicated certain magical hand gestures and body postures, with which the yogi conducted, controlled and “sealed” the divine energies. This semantic richness has led to all manner of speculation. For example, we read that the tantric master “stamps” the phenomena of the world with happiness, and that as his companion helps him do this, she is known as mudra (‘stamp’). More concretely, the Maha Siddha Naropa refers to the fact that a tantric partner, in contrast to a normal woman, assists the guru in blocking his ejaculation during the sexual act, and as it were “seals” this, which is of major importance for the performance of the ritual. For this reason she is known as mudra, ‘seal’ (Naropa, 1994, p. 81). But the actual meaning probably lies in the following: in Vajrayana the feminine itself is “sealed”, that is, spellbound via a magic act, so that it is available to the tantric master in its entirety...
Kāli's association with darkness stands in contrast to her consort, Shiva, who manifested after her in creation, and who symbolises the rest of creation after Time is created. In his supreme awareness of Maya, his body is covered by the white ashes of the cremation ground (Sanskrit: śmaśāna) where he meditates, and with which Kāli is also associated, as śmaśāna-kālī. It is said that aspirants who wish to offer Bhakthi should approach under the proper guidance of a Siddha or equivalent. Chanting her mantras from anywhere would cause unknown effects..Goddesses play an important role in the study and practice of Tantra Yoga, and are affirmed to be as central to discerning the nature of reality as are the male deities.., it is Kāli who seems to dominate much of the Tantric iconography, texts, and rituals...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sngAEbtEAlg

What then are the external criteria which a karma mudra, a real woman, needs to meet in order to serve a guru as wisdom consort? The Hevajra Tantra, for example, describes her in the following words: “She is neither too tall, nor too short, neither quite black nor quite white, but dark like a lotus leaf. Her breath is sweet, and her sweat has a pleasant smell like that of musk. Her pudenda gives forth a scent from moment to moment like different kinds of lotuses or like sweet aloe wood. She is calm and resolute, pleasant in speech and altogether delightful” (Snellgrove, 1959, p. 116). At another juncture the same tantra recommends that the guru “take a consort who has a beautiful face, is wide-eyed, is endowed with grace and youth, is dark, courageous, of good family and originates from the female and male fluids” (Farrow and Menon, 1992, p. 217). Gedün Chöpel, a famous tantric from the 20th century, draws a distinction between the various regions from which the women come. Girls from Kham province, for example, have soft flesh, lovers from Dzang are well-versed in the erotic techniques, “Kashmiri girls” are to be valued for their smile, and so on (Chöpel, 1992, p. 45)..

Sometimes it is also required of the karma mudra that as well as being attractive she also possess specialized erotic skills. For example, the Kalachakra Tantra recommends training in the sophisticated Indian sexual techniques of the Kama Sutra. In this famous handbook on the intensification of sexual lust, the reader can inform him- or herself about the most daring positions, the use of aphrodisiacs, the anatomical advantages various women possess, the seduction of young girls, dealings with courtesans, and much more. The sole intention of the Kama Sutra, however, is to sexualize life as a whole. In contrast to the tantras there are no religious and power-political intentions to be found behind this work. It thus has no intrinsic value for the tantric yogi. The latter uses it purely as a source of inspiration, to stimulate his desires which he then brings under conscious control...
Chhinnamasta (Sanskrit: छिन्नमस्ता, Bengali: ছিন্নমস্তা(অর্থাৎ যার মস্তক ছিন্ন), Chinnamastā, "She whose head is severed"), often spelled Chinnamasta and also called Chhinnamastika and Prachanda Chandika, is one of the Mahavidyas, ten Tantric goddesses and a ferocious aspect of Devi, the Hindu Divine Mother. Chhinnamasta can be easily identified by her fearsome iconography. The self-decapitated goddess holds her own severed head in one hand, a scimitar in another. Three jets of blood spurt out of her bleeding neck and are drunk by her severed head and two attendants. Chhinnamasta is usually depicted standing on a copulating couple..

Chhinnamasta is associated with the concept of self-sacrifice as well as the awakening of the kundalini – spiritual energy. She is considered both as a symbol of self-control on sexual desire as well as an embodiment of sexual energy, depending upon interpretation. She symbolizes both aspects of Devi: a life-giver and a life-taker. Her legends emphasize her sacrifice – sometimes with a maternal element, her sexual dominance and her self-destructive fury...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHSYXt1iEpE
Quote:
When the king and later Maha Siddha, Dombipa, one day noticed the beautiful daughter of a traveling singer before his palace, he selected her as his wisdom consort and bought her from her father for an enormous sum in gold. She was “an innocent virgin, untainted by the sordid world about her. She was utterly charming, with a fair complexion and classical features. She had all the qualities of a padmini, a lotus child, the rarest and most desirable of all girls” (Dowman, 1985, pp. 53–54). What became of the “lotus child” after the ritual is not recorded.

“In the rite of ‘virgin-worship’ (kumari-puja)”, writes Benjamin Walker, “a girl is selected and trained for initiation, and innocent of her impending fate is brought before the altar and worshipped in the nude, and then deflowered by a guru or chela” (Walker, 1982, p. 72). It was not just the Hindu tantrics who practiced rituals with a kumari, but also the Tibetans, in any case the Grand Abbot of the Sakyapa Sect, even though he was married..On a numerological basis twelve- or sixteen-year-old girls are preferred. Only when none can be found does Tsongkhapa recommend the use of a twenty-year-old. There is also a table of correspondences between the various ages and the elements and senses: an 11-year-old represents the air, a 12-year-old fire, a 13-year-old water, a 14-year-old earth, a15-year-old sound, a 16-year-old the sense of touch, a 17-year-old taste, an 18-year-old shape or form, and a 20-year-old the sense of smell (Naropa, 1994, p. 189)..The rituals should not be performed with women older than this, as they absorb the “occult forces” of the guru...

The Man from Chinnamasta is a novel published in 2005 and written by Indira Goswami, who was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983, the Jnanpith Award in 2001 and the Prince Claus Awards in 2008.. Set in the times of unrest and turmoil at the turn of the twentieth century, the novel paints the hoary history of Assam's most famous temple of the Sakta cult, Kamakhya...

The Kama Sutra (Sanskrit: कामसूत्र , Kāmasūtra) is an ancient Indian Hindu text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behavior in Sanskrit literature written by Vātsyāyana. A portion of the work consists of practical advice on sexual intercourse.. It is largely in prose, with many inserted anustubh poetry verses. "Kāma" which is one of the 4 goals of Hindu life, means sensual or sexual pleasure, and "sūtra" literally means a thread or line that holds things together, and more metaphorically refers to an aphorism (or line, rule, formula), or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual..

In childhood, Vātsyāyana says, a person should learn how to make a living; youth is the time for pleasure, and as years pass one should concentrate on living virtuously and hope to escape the cycle of rebirth..The Kama Sutra acknowledges that the senses can be dangerous: 'Just as a horse in full gallop, blinded by the energy of his own speed, pays no attention to any post or hole or ditch on the path, so two lovers, blinded by passion, in the friction of sexual battle, are caught up in their fierce energy and pay no attention to danger'(2.7.33)...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ67V2SqD3A

It should however be noted that such Western sublimations of the feminine only correspond to a degree with the imaginings of Indian and Tibetan tantrics. There, it is not just noble and ethereal virgins who are conjured up in the yogis’ imaginations, but also sensuous “dakinis” trembling with lust, who not uncommonly appear as figures of horror, goddesses with bowls made of skulls and cleavers in their hands.

But whatever sort of a woman the adept imagines, in all events he will unite sexually with this spiritual being during the ritual. The white and refined “Sophias” from the realm of the imagination are not exempted from the ritual sexual act. “Among the last phases of the tantrik’s progress”, Benjamin Walker tells us, “is sexual union on the astral plane, when he invokes elemental spirits, fiendesses and the spirits of the dead, and has intercourse with them” (Walker, 1982, p. 74)..During the tantric ritual the karma mudra must therefore be recognized by the yogi as an illusion. This is of course also true of the inana mudra, since the tantric master as an autonomous being has to transcend both forms of the feminine, the real and the imagined.. At the beginning of every tantric ritual both mudras still appear outside of him; the karma mudra before his “real” eyes, the inana mudra before his “spiritual” eyes...

Since the yogi produces his wisdom companion through the imaginative power of his spirit, he can rightly consider himself her spiritual father. The inana mudra is composed of the substance of his own thoughts. She thus does not consist of matter, but — and this is very important — she nonetheless appears outside of her imagination-father and initially encounters him as an autonomous subject. He thus experiences her as a being who admittedly has him alone to thank for her being, but who nevertheless has a life of her own, like a child, separated from its mother once it is born..In all, the tantras distinguish two “types of birth” for imagined female partners: firstly, the “women produced by spells”; secondly, the “field-born yoginis”. In both cases we are dealing with so-called “feminine energy fields” or feminine archetypes which the tantric master can through his imaginative powers render visible for him as “illusory bodies”. This usually takes place via a deep meditation in which the yogi visualizes the inana mudra with his “spiritual eye” (Wayman, 1973, pp. 193–195)...
Also the Buddha preached a Kama Sutra, which is located in the Atthakavagga (sutra number 1). This Kama Sutra, however, is of a very different nature as it warns against the dangers that come with the search for pleasures of the senses..Many in the Western world wrongly consider the Kama Sutra to be a manual for tantric sex.. While sexual practices do exist within the very wide tradition of Hindu Tantra, the Kama Sutra is not a Tantric text, and does not touch upon any of the sexual rites associated with some forms of Tantric practice.. “And I offer most attractive illusory mudras, a host of messengers born from places, born from mantra, and spontaneously born, with slender bodies, skilled in the 64 arts of love”...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCss0kZXeyE

A queen consort (also empress consort) is the wife of a reigning king (or emperor). A queen consort usually shares her husband’s rank and holds the feminine equivalent of the king’s monarchical titles. Historically, queens consort do not share the king regnant’s political and military powers. A queen regnant is a queen in her own right with all the powers of a monarch...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JPnYukhTfs

If you condense Buddha’s teachings step by step, they become the Three Principle Paths. We can develop the Three Principle Paths and gain mastery over our rebirth. You know why? So you don’t ever have to worry about yourself again and I don’t have to worry about you. You gain mastery..You can..

Therefore, the best anyone can do if not enlightenment for now is to gain mastery over taking rebirth coupled with developing the Three Principle Paths. They go hand in hand by the way. Where you want to take rebirth can be determined by yourself if you practice the sacred Vajrayogini Tantra thoroughly..

Start now before you are awarded the Vajrayogini empowerments. Start now! How? By holding your commitments and your vows – your refuge vows primarily and your commitments. Whatever you promise your Guru and your Dharma brothers and sisters to do, you do it. If you break it, you don’t create the causes to get Vajrayogini. One has to lead to another..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICDQpO5cuNc

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0gICpq6F0w

Be honorable and have integrity meaning that whatever you say you are going to do, do it. Whatever work or practice you have been assigned, do it diligently and happily. This applies to every Dharma student around the world not just here by the way. This is going to be seen by everyone..

Develop contemplations on the good qualities of one’s Lama again and again. Always contemplate how your Lama has changed your life, how you were before you met your Lama, how you gain purpose after your Lama, and basically how many examples the Lama has shown you. If you contemplate on that over and over again, it’s very powerful. Do you know why? Because when you receive Vajrayogini’s empowerment, you might even see your Lama as Vajrayogini. But if you always think negative thoughts and contemplate negative thoughts with your Lama, you will just see him as an ordinary person. You can still get the initiation but it is not as effective..

So by contemplating on your Lama and thinking about his good qualities and what he has done for you in your life until tears come down your eyes, always until it is spontaneous, you prepare yourself to receive Vajrayogini, from Vajrayogini. Never give up. Never give up. I quit, I can’t, I don’t want to, bye bye… never give up. If you give up on something small like this, how are you going to do Vajrayogini’s practice? That’s even more intense. So if you don’t give up now, when you get to see Vajrayogini, you are not going to give up. If you don’t give up Vajrayogini, you will gain Her paths.. You will gain Her attainments...

The Aghori (Sanskrit: अघोर aghōra), are ascetic Shaiva sadhus..Many Aghori gurus command great reverence from rural populations as they are supposed to possess healing powers gained through their intensely eremitic rites and practices of renunciation and tápasya..Though Aghoris are prevalent in cremation grounds across India, Nepal, and even sparsely across cremation grounds in South East Asia, the secrecy of this religious sect leaves no desire for practitioners to aspire for social recognition and notoriety.. They are also known to meditate and perform worship in haunted houses...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc2QXeQXZ8c

Saivism is the Hindu sect that worships the god Shiva. Shiva is sometimes depicted as the fierce god Bhairava.. Saivists are more attracted to asceticism than adherents of other Hindu sects, and may be found wandering India with ashen faces performing self-purification rituals..They worship in the temple and practice yoga, striving to be one with Siva within..

The Aghori are known to engage in post-mortem rituals. They often dwell in charnel grounds, have been witnessed smearing cremation ashes on their bodies, and have been known to use bones from human corpses for crafting skull bowls (which Shiva and other Hindu deities are often iconically depicted holding or using) and jewelry. Due to their practices that are contradictory to orthodox Hinduism.. Another symbol of the aghori, which ties him to the affiliation of Bhairava and links aghoris together with other Saiva and Sakta traditions, is the trident...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1EmxOUewo4

Lightbulb Holy Ghost

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkROLJjYCpo

For the large majority of Christians, the Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost, from Old English gast, "spirit") is the 3rd divine person of the Trinity: the "Triune God" manifested as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; each person itself being God..The Hebrew language phrase ruach ha-kodesh (Hebrew: רוח הקודש, "holy spirit" also transliterated ruaḥ ha-qodesh) is a term used in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and Jewish writings to refer to the Spirit of YHWH (רוח יהוה). It literally means "the spirit of holiness" or "the spirit of the holy place"..The Holy Spirit (Arabic: الروح القدس al-Ruh al-Qudus, "the-Spirit the-Holy") is mentioned several times in the Qur'an, where it acts as an agent of divine action or communication. In Hadith it is commonly identified with the angel Gabriel (Arabic Jibreel). The Spirit (الروح al-Ruh, without the adjective "holy") is also used as the creative spirit from God by which God enlivened Adam, and inspired the angels and the prophets..In Bahá'í belief, the Holy Spirit is the conduit through which the wisdom of God becomes directly associated with his messenger, and it has been described variously in different religions such as the burning bush to Moses, the sacred fire to Zoroaster, the dove to Jesus, the angel Gabriel to Muhammad, and the maid of heaven to Bahá'u'lláh...
Quote:
There is widespread belief in ghosts in Tibetan culture. Ghosts are explicitly recognized in the Tibetan Buddhist religion as they were in Indian Buddhism,[ occupying a distinct but overlapping world to the human one, and feature in many traditional legends. When a human dies, after a period of uncertainty they may enter the ghost world. A hungry ghost (Tibetan: yidag, yi-dvags; Sanskrit: preta, प्रेत) has a tiny throat and huge stomach, and so can never be satisfied. Ghosts may be killed with a ritual dagger or caught in a spirit trap and burnt, thus releasing them to be reborn..Tibetan Buddhists believe that when a person dies, they enter the intermediate Bardo state, from which they may be reborn in this world in a human or animal body, in the ghost world in a ghost body, in one of the paradise realms or in one of the hells. But eventually, the person will die in this after-death world and be reborn as a human or other creature unless they achieve Nirvana, where they are beyond all states of embodiment..The Asuras formerly lived in the Trāyastriṃśa world, on the peak of Mount Sumeru, with the other gods of that world. When Śakra became the ruler of that world, the Asuras celebrated by drinking a lot of Gandapāna wine, a liquor so strong that Śakra forbade the other gods to drink it. Weakened by their drunkenness, the Asuras could not resist when Śakra had the whole lot of them thrown over the edge of Trāyastriṃśa into what would become the Asura-world at the base of Sumeru. A tree grows there called Cittapātali; when the Asuras saw it blossom, they saw that it was different from the Pāricchattaka (Sanskrit: Pāriyātra) tree which had grown in their old home, and they knew that they were dispossessed...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roqHaEjDPzQ
Families often mount ghost-traps on the roofs of their houses, spindle-like contraptions wound with colored yarns.. A spirit trap may also be hung in a tree. The series of interlocking threads is thought to ensnare the spirit, and is burnt when the job is done..The temples and monasteries throughout Tibet hold grand religious dance ceremonies, with the largest at Potala Palace in Lhasa. Families clean their houses on this day, decorate the rooms and eat a special noodle soup called 'Guthuk'. ༼དགུ་ཐུག་༽ In the evening, the people carry torches, calling out the words of exorcism..Asuri is the feminine of an adjective from asura and therefore means primarily belonging to or having to do with demons and spirits.. The term Asuri is a secondary nominal derivative of Asura and a personal name.. asur was a title, or part of an individual name, in the Assyrian king-lists after 2000 BC, example: Puzhur-Asur (of circa 1975 BC); with the Rigvedic usage purported by Malti Shengde to be parallel to the Akkadian. Asur, meaning The Beneficent, was the national god of Assyria, with the city of Asur named after the deity..In its Buddhist context, the word is sometimes translated "Titan" (suggesting the wars of the Greek gods and Titans), "demigod", or "antigod"..The Asuras are said to experience a much more pleasurable life than humans, but they are plagued by envy for the devas, whom they can see just as animals perceive humans. The Asuras of some inferior realms however, are malevolent (such as the corruptor Mara) and can be referred to as demons...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su4s7C1bEfY

The lingam is a representation of the Hindu deity Shiva used for worship in temples.. In traditional Indian society, linga is rather seen as a symbol of the energy and potentiality of the God..The lingam is often represented alongside the yoni, a symbol of the goddess or of Shakti, female creative energy.. The union of lingam and yoni represents the "indivisible two-in-oneness of male and female, the passive space and active time from which all life originates"..The Hindu scripture Shiva Purana describes in its first section, the Vidyeshwar Samhita, the origin of the lingam, known as Shiva-linga, as the beginning-less and endless cosmic pillar (Stambha) of fire, the cause of all causes.. Lord Shiva is pictured as emerging from the Lingam – the cosmic pillar of fire – proving his superiority over gods Brahma and Vishnu..In yogic lore, the linga is considered the first form to arise when creation occurs, and also the last form before the dissolution of creation...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVd6rBKOFf0

Linea nigra (Latin for "black line") is a dark vertical line that appears on the abdomen during about three quarters of all pregnancies.. The brownish streak is usually about a centimeter in width. The line runs vertically along the midline of the abdomen from the pubis to the umbilicus, but can also run from the pubis to the top of the abdomen..Raphe (from Greek ραφή "suture") has several different meanings in science..In botany and planktology it is commonly used when describing a seam or ridge on diatoms or seeds...Yes, that's right, he's a bit older than you, isn't he? Shiprock ("rock with wings" or "winged rock") is a monadnock rising nearly 1,583 feet (482.5 m) above the high-desert plain on the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico, USA. It has a peak elevation of 7,177 feet (2,187.5 m) above sea level.. It lies about 10.75 miles (17.30 km) southwest of the town of Shiprock, which is named for the peak. Governed by the Navajo Nation, the formation is in the 4 Corners region and plays a significant role in Navajo religion, mythology and tradition..The Navajo name for the peak, Tsé Bitʼaʼí, "rock with wings" or "winged rock", refers to the legend of the great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present lands..Radiometric age determinations of the minette establish that these volcanic rocks solidified about 27 million years ago..The peak is mentioned in stories from the Enemy Side Ceremony and the Navajo Mountain Chant. It is associated with the Bead Chant and the Naayee'ee Ceremony... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF9WcUt-t0k

Chöd (Tibetan: གཅོད, 'to sever'), is a spiritual practice.. Also known as "Cutting Through the Ego," the practice is based on the Prajñāpāramitā or "Perfection of Wisdom" sutras which expound the "emptiness" concept of buddhist philosophy. According to Mahayana buddhists, emptiness is the ultimate wisdom of understanding that all things lack inherent existence.. Chod combines prajñāpāramitā philosophy with specific meditation methods and tantric ritual.. The chod practitioner seeks to tap the power of fear through activities such as rituals set in graveyards, and visualisation of offering their bodies in a tantric Feast in order to put their understanding of Emptiness to the Ultimate test...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEpJdHS1pV0

Exclamation M's Daughter's

In some accounts of the Buddha's enlightenment, it is said that the demon Māra sent his three daughters to tempt the Buddha to give up his quest. Mara's three daughters are identified as Taṇhā (Craving), Arati (Boredom), and Raga (Passion)..For example, in the Samyutta Nikaya's Māra-saṃyutta, Mara's three daughters fail to entice the Buddha:They had come to him glittering with beauty Taṇhā, Arati, and Rāga But the Teacher swept them away right there As the wind, a fallen cotton tuft..Some stories refer to the existence of 5 Daughters, who represent the 3 Poisons, Attraction, Aversion and Delusion, accompanied additionally by Pride and Fear...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F8I5E82Qew

In Sanskrit, his name can be interpreted to mean "twin"In Hinduism, Yama is the lokapala ("Guardian of the Directions") of the SOUTH..3 hymns (10, 14, and 35) in the 10th book of the Rig Veda are addressed to him.. He has 2 dogs with 4 eyes and wide nostrils guarding the road to his abode (hellhound)..They are said to wander about among people as his messengers..A parallel character in Iranian mythology and Zoroastrianism is known as Yima Xšaēta, who appears in the Avesta. The pronunciation "Yima" is peculiar to the Avestan dialect; in most Iranian dialects, including Old Persian, the name would have been "Yama". In the Avesta, the emphasis is on Yima's character as one of the first mortals and as a great king of men. Over time, *Yamaxšaita was transformed into Jamšēd or Jamshid, celebrated as the greatest of the early shahs of the world. Lhasa is the administrative capital of Tibet. It is the 2nd most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau after Xining and, at an altitude of 3,490 metres (11,450 ft), Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world.. The city contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang temple and Norbulingka palaces, many of which are located in Chengguan District, the city seat..Lhasa literally means "place of the gods". Ancient Tibetan documents and inscriptions demonstrate that the place was called Rasa, which either meant "goats' place", or, as a contraction of rawe sa, a "place surrounded by a wall," or 'enclosure', suggesting that the site was originally a hunting preserve within the royal residence on Marpori Hill.. Lhasa is first recorded as the name, referring to the area's temple of Jowo, in a treaty drawn up between China and Tibet in 822 C.E..(DCCCXXII) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the Julian calendar..The civil war between Byzantine Emperor Michael II and the general Thomas the Slav continues. Thomas unsuccessfully attacks Constantinople, while his fleet is destroyed by Michael's navy using Greek fire.Tahir ibn Husayn ( طاهر بن حسین, Arabic: طاهر بن الحسين), also known as Dhu'l-Yaminayn ("the ambidextrous"), and al-A'war ("the 1-eyed"), was a Iranian general and governor during the Abbasid caliphate..Kim Heonchang (died 822) was the leader of an aristocratic rebellion in early 9th-century Unified Silla. He was a 7th-generation descendant of King Muyeol, and thus bore the "true bone" status in the Silla bone rank system..Gregory Pterotos (Greek: Γρηγόριος Πτερωτός) was a Byzantine general and relative of Emperor Leo V the Armenian (r. 813–820), who took part in the rebellion of Thomas the Slav against Leo's murderer, Michael II the Amorian (r. 820–829)..822 Naval Air Squadron was a Fleet Air Arm aircraft squadron before and during World War II..822 Lalage is an asteroid orbiting the Sun..SR 822 starts at 7th Street on University Boulevard, where it immediately meets US 22 east at an interchange with on-/off-ramps. The Nangpa La shooting incident happened on September 30, 2006. A group of unarmed/defenceless Tibetan pilgrims attempting to leave Tibet via the Nangpa La pass were fired upon by Chinese border guards..Kelsang Namtso, a 17-year-old nun, was killed and a number were injured..As many as 32 Tibetans, including children, were taken into custody–many were later released, although suffering torture and hard labour, and some are still unaccounted for.. Nangpa La is a traditional trade route between Tibet and Nepal.. The victims were shot from a distance by border guards as they moved slowly through chest-deep snow.. The Chinese government initially denied the charges, but Kelsang's murder was graphically filmed by a Romanian photographer, who was nearby as part of a climbing expedition..After Romanian photographer Sergiu Matei smuggled the video out of Tibet, it became headline news around the world, drawing attention to the plight of Tibetans under Chinese rule/occupation...

Lightbulb Dāna

Quote:
Or Daana is generosity or giving, a form of alms.. In hinduism, buddhism, and jainism it is the practice of cultivating generosity. Ultimately, the practice culminates in 1 of the perfections (pāramitā): the perfection of giving - dāna-pāramitā.. This can be characterized by unattached and unconditional generosity, giving and letting go..Dāna as a formal religious act is directed specifically to a monastic or spiritually-developed person. In Buddhist thought, it has the effect of purifying and transforming the mind of the Giver..Generosity developed through giving leads to being reborn in happy states and the availability of material wealth..The type and number of Dāna vary depending on occasion such as Thread Ceremony.. Conversely, lack of giving leads to unhappy states and poverty...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJRF8xGzvj4
Vidya Dāna or Vidya Daana (विद्या दान): Donating/Sharing Knowledge for education. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." In Christianity, it is also known as the Gift of Knowledge..

Aushadhaa Daana : Charity of free medicine to the sick and diseased..

Abhay Daana: Giving freedom from fear...

Kanya Dāna: Giving one's daughter's hand in marriage, where the Daughter goes to stay with her husband..

Bhu Dāna (भू दान): Donation of land..

Anna Dāna/(अन्ना दान): Donating food to poor and needy, pilgrims, patients at hospitals, orphanages, old age homes etc...

Go Dāna: Donation of a Cow..Even By Name...

Quote:
Hindu law breaks the giving and receiving of gifts down by caste, as it does other activities. Each caste has its own rules and regulations on the topic of religious gifts. Manu explains that the reason for this is to ensure the protection of all creation, of how things should be.. Brahmins can both receive and give gifts.. Kṣatriyas are allowed only to give gifts, as are the vaiśyas. Brahmins can accept gifts, but only under the right circumstances and from the right people. If a brahmin has enough to sustain himself and his family, he is then not to ask for gifts.. If, however, he finds himself in a time of trouble and he anticipates struggling for his maintenance, he may seek gifts from the king.. It is the duty of the king to supply proper livelihood for a brahmin in distress. Brahmins would not, however, seek gifts from a king that was not of the kṣatriya lineage, nor from any greedy king, or a king who disobeys the śâstras.. It is important also that both the giver and the receiver share the same respect when giving and obtaining gifts..Buddhists believe that giving without seeking anything in return leads to greater spiritual wealth. Moreover, it reduces the acquisitive impulses that ultimately lead to continued suffering from Egotism...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAeKX5n-5IE

We left the camp after we had inoculated the children for polio, and this old man came running after us and he was crying. He couldn't see. We went back there, and they had come and hacked off every inoculated arm. There they were in a pile. A pile of little arms. And I remember... I... I... I cried, I wept like some grandmother. I wanted to tear my teeth out; I didn't know what I wanted to do! And I want to remember it. I never want to forget it... I never want to forget..We train young men to drop fire on children, but their commanders won't allow them to write "fcuk" on their airplanes because it's obscene!..

Hilary or Hillary is a given and family name, derived from the Latin hilarius meaning "cheerful", from hilaris, "cheerful, merry" which comes from the Greek ἱλαρός (hilaros), "cheerful, merry", which in turn comes from ἵλαος (hilaos), "propitious, gracious"... Ilaria is the popular Italian and Spanish feminine form, while Ilario is the Italian masculine one. Ilariana and Ylariana ( eye-LAH--ree-AH-nə) are 2 very rare feminine variants of the name..Saint Hilary of Arles (c. 403-449) was a bishop of Arles in southern France.. He is recognized as a saint by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, with his feast day celebrated on 5 May..Gallia Belgica (Belgic Gaul) was a province of the Roman empire located in Belgium, present-day northern France, Luxembourg, part of the present-day Netherlands below the Rhine, and the German Rhineland.

Lightbulb No One Here Gets Out Alive

Jarāmaraṇa is Sanskrit and Pāli for "old age" (jarā) and "death" (maraṇa).. In Buddhism, jaramarana is associated with the inevitable end-of-life suffering of ALL beings prior to their rebirth within saṃsāra (cyclic existence)..The 12 Nidānas (Pali/Sanskrit nidāna "cause, foundation, source or origin") are an application of the Buddhist concept of pratītyasamutpāda (dependent origination).. They identify the origin of dukkha (suffering) to be in avijja (ignorance)...

Quote:
Death and dying generally involve a certain amount of pain and degradation, as well as grieving. We imagine that death only happens to older people, but that’s not true—human beings are always surrounded by forces of destruction that can terminate their lives at any moment. Life involves a lot of stressful holding on, even for ducks and squirrels, let alone for human beings who have surrounded themselves with, or invented, fire, electricity, cars, and lots of weapons.. These are all created to make our life more secure, yet they are all very common sources of wounding and death.. The fear of discomfort or of loss of security fills our life with potentially deadly things. As the Buddha explained it, death may also refer to the disappearance of any mental or physical experience. When something pleasant ends, we can feel sad, or, if it wasn’t too important, we can remember it and form some kind of view or opinion about it. When it’s something you’ve created, perhaps a painting, for instance, you might feel critical of your work; or, maybe if you have no self-criticisms in the present moment, that feeling of success might set up a pattern of expectation for your next painting, or for someone else’s painting. This can happen with anything that you’ve done; you think back on it and see its flaws. Alternatively, if it was something you enjoyed doing and now it is finished—that also brings an unhappy feeling, a feeling of longing or nostalgia. Death is the ending of the known and the familiar. So when we come to the end of something, we reach out for something new to hold on to.. For example, after a meal, we can go for a walk, or maybe have a rest, or there’s conversation in which we can bring back the pleasant past, or plan for a pleasant future, or create and sustain a pleasant present.. All of that is the movement toward birth ...

http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...&postcount=601So the Biblical scholars mis-translated the Hebrew word for "young woman" into the Greek word for virgin," which was a pretty easy mistake to make, since there is only a subtle difference in the spelling. But back then it was the "virgin" that caught people's attention. It's not every day a virgin conceives and bears a son. So you keep that for a couple of hundred years, and the next thing you know, you have the Holy Catholic church...http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...postcount=1352
