Michigan man gets 15 years for repeatedly sexually assaulting his pet dogs — claims he was just ‘hugging’ them
Prosecutors say convicted sex offender Kurtis Peterson took the phrase man’s best friend too literally when he was busted on bestiality charges for having sex with his pit bull and another pet dog.

A Michigan man has been jailed for repeatedly raping his pet dogs.

Convicted sex offender Kurtis Peterson, 37, had sex with his pit bull and blue heeler at his Muskegon apartment.

Judge Timothy Hicks heard on Monday how the deviant dog owner was first caught penetrating one of his pets by Joyce Yeaw on his bed in April 2010.

Peterson, however, told her he was "just hugging his dog."

Chef drops foie gras from Valentine's menu after death threats

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandst...-death-threats

Mark Dixon of Kings Arms at Fleggburgh criticises ‘harassment’ by vegan activists after receiving menacing phone calls

Death threats from anonymous callers claiming to be vegan activists have forced a Norfolk chef to drop foie gras from his Valentine’s Day menu.

Mark Dixon, the award-winning head chef at the Kings Arms at Fleggburgh, near Great Yarmouth, said he had received hundreds of threatening phone calls.

The intimidation included direct threats to any staff members who answered the phones and warnings that diners arriving for his £50-a-head special menu on Saturday and Sunday night would face pickets and demonstrations.

My life in his paws: We've all heard of devoted dogs. But the tale of Ted, the four-legged housekeeper and bodyguard who saves his owner's life EVERY DAY, is as touching as it's inspiring
Wendy Hilling has two handsome and young males looking after her
One is her husband of 24 years, Peter, and the other is a lively nine-year-old golden retriever called Ted (or Teddy Edward to give his his full name)
She has a rare genetic condition and often wakes up unable to breathe
But Ted often saves her life as he is trained to push her panic button

The Science of Chocolate and Cannabis: How They Combine To Make Powerful Medicines

http://www.davidwolfe.com/the-scient...are-medicines/

Chocolate and cannabis are so wonderful that even the mention of both in a sentence is enough to make one giggle. Scientific proof is mounting that both chocolate and cannabis contain healing properties. Their dance is well-known to many, who may have fond memories of gorging through a pan of pot brownies. Indeed, these two super foods are magical but as David Wolfe explains below there is plenty of science that answers ‘how’ and ‘why’ they work so well as medicine.

unbelievable - Switzerland is such a wealthy country, how can people there not club together to save these beautiful and innocent animals, or have them taken to another country to be cared for They never asked to be captured, where is the duty of care they deserve.

First Baby Treated With Cannabis CBD Oil At The Hospital

http://sorendreier.com/first-baby-tr...-the-hospital/

In December, Nicole and Ernie Nunez brought their beautiful baby girl, Amylea, into the world. However, when they brought her home, things quickly took a turn for the worst.

“About a day after we went home from delivery is when she had her first seizure,” Nicole said. “She has a rare form of epilepsy. They don’t know exactly the type.”

For the past two months, the Nunez family has been desperately trying to treat their daughter’s condition. Doctors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the family is from, were unable to find a cause and unable to treat young Amylea. So, the family has fled to Colorado.

Nicole stays at the hospital in Aurora while Ernie drives back and forth to take care of the couple’s other children and to work.

Tradition on trial amid dog meat crackdown

A few weeks back, Hangzhou veterinarian Pei Zengyang treated a golden retriever whose skull was beaten by the owner’s neighbor, who wanted to kill the dog for its meat.

“Once winter comes, we always see an increase of cases of dogs poisoned or beaten,” Pei said.

While many people in the world are repulsed by the idea of eating dog meat, it’s an old winter tradition in some parts of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The meat is said to provide yang (hot) energy to keep people warm on cold days and also is believed to have aphrodisiac effects.

Raising dogs for meat isn’t done on a large scale, so supply falls short of demand this time of year. That creates a subculture where some people steal pet dogs or hunt strays for their meat.

The golden retriever treated at Pei’s PetShield Hospital recovered after surgery, but it was among the lucky ones. Other dogs are not so fortunate.

#ShockWildlifeTruths: 2015 the worst year in decades for rhino poaching

Rhino poaching is not on the decline despite concerted efforts to stem the prolific Asian trade in rhino horn - we take a look at state of Rhino poaching pandemic in the third piece in our #ShockWildlifeTruths series, focusing on the world's endangered species, which you may not realise are teetering on the very brink of extinction.

The stench of death is something few people get used to. The sickly smell is insidious, and seems to follow you long after you’ve left the scene of decaying flesh.

It was July 2010, near the start of what became the current rhino poaching war in Southern Africa. We’d found a dead white rhino – a female - in Opathe Game Reserve, a government protected area in KwaZulu-Natal.

The maggots were everywhere, a writhing mass of decomposition. The horn of the animal was gone, chopped off by a poacher.

I was accompanying Dr Dave Cooper, the wildlife vet for Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, the provincial conservation agency. The cops had called him in to do a post-mortem.

How 'farmacy' practice, or using food as medicine, can change the world

(NaturalNews) In the name of demonstrating how effective plant-based whole foods are when it comes to improving health, Dr. Ronald Weiss actually sold his medical practice and opened up a "farmacy" by the name of Ethos Primary Care, to help others. The farmacy, located in Long Valley, New Jersey, is designed to do as the generic name implies: Rather than having people rely on traditional pharmacy practices, the concept is to show how farm-based, real foods contribute to better health more than any synthetic drug ever could – hence the word "farmacy."(1)

"Plant-based whole foods are the most powerful disease-modifying tools available to practitioners — more powerful than any drugs or surgeries," says Dr. Weiss. "I am not saying if you fall down and break your ankle, I can fix it by putting a salve ofmugwort [sic] on it. You need someone to fix your fracture," he explained. "I am talking about treating and preventing chronic disease — the heart attacks, the strokes, the cardiovascular disease, the cancers ... the illnesses that are taking our economy and our nation down."(1)

Man who filmed woman torturing animals sentenced to 50 years in prison

http://www.examiner.com/article/man-...0-years-prison

On Monday, a 54-year-old Texas man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for cruelty to non-livestock animals - a charge resulting from his part in so-called "crush" videos which portray animals being tortured and killed, reported Wednesday's publication of The Daily Mail.

Houston resident, Brent Justice, was arrested in 2012 with 25-year-old Ashley Nicole Richards, who "starred" in the heinous films which showed, among other things, a kitten having its eyes gouged out with the heel of stilettos, and a pit bull puppy being butchered with a meat cleaver. The pair had started their crush film venture with the stomping of crabs and craw fish - they eventually moved on to cats, dogs, mice and even chickens.

According to the Houston Press, Justice opted to represent himself in court and on February 10, a judge in Harris County found him guilty of animal cruelty. Richards was sentenced to 10 years in prison back in 2014 for her part in the cruel productions.

Deputy Uses His Bare Hands To Save Bulldog From Bleeding To Death

http://barkpost.com/deputy-saves-bul...ign=barkpostfb

North Carolina Master Deputy Gonnelli met Daisy, a Bulldog, while he was handling a domestic dispute case. Daisy is deaf, but she understands sign language. The deputy and dog instantly bonded. When Gonnelli left the home to continue on with his day, he thought he would never see Daisy again. Sadly, he did – and for the worst reason.

Hours later he went back to the residence on a cruelty to animals call. When he arrived, he saw another deputy arresting the suspect, Lorraine Villanueva. Then, he saw his new canine friend on the floor, bleeding from her throat. Lorraine had, allegedly, slashed the dog’s throat and killed her roommate’s Pit Bull.

Deputy Gonnelli rushed to Daisy’s side. He put his hands over the pup’s neck to slow the bleeding. Daisy must have remembered the deputy, because she calmed down once he was near her. He petted her and tried to soothe her until help arrived.

Outrage after dolphin beach death

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/18/am...age/index.html

CNN)A rare La Plata dolphin died earlier this month after a group of beach-goers apparently took it out of the ocean, then surrounded and handled it, according to Vida Silvestre, a wildlife foundation in Argentina.

Sky News obtained video of a person removing a dolphin from the water in Santa Teresita, a coastal town about 350 kilometers southeast of Buenos Aires, and beachgoers took photos of a dolphin that appears to have been left to die in the sand.

It is unclear why the dolphin was initially removed from the water.

U.S. Antiques Dealer Pleads Guilty to Smuggling Ivory
Ferdinand Krizan was also found to be in possession of dozens of illegal wildlife products.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2...ing-smuggling/

When 77-year old New Yorker Ferdinand Krizan loaded up the pair of elephant tusks into his car in Ontario, Canada, he knew what he was about to do was illegal. An antiques dealer based about an hour southwest of Buffalo in Franklin, New York, Krizan was aware that importing elephant ivory without an Endangered Species Act permit could get him in a lot of trouble. Still, on November 28, 2014, he hid them in his car and drove across the Niagara Falls Rainbow Bridge into the U.S.

Now Krizan faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for violating the Lacey Act, a law that makes it a crime to trade in illegally acquired wildlife products. It turns out the Canadian auction house he bought the tusks from, IEGOR Hôtel des encans de Montréal, had become the target of Canadian investigators. When they conducted a raid, Krizan showed up in paperwork as a buyer. They alerted U.S. authorities, and an investigation into Krizan’s dealings began. On Wednesday, Krizan pleaded guilty to trafficking the tusks, valued at $141,000.

The Spiked Nose Ring: A Symbol for All Dairy Cruelty

http://freefromharm.org/videos/farm-....v7cTDGj2.dpuf

Voltaire once wrote, “If we believe absurdities, we will commit atrocities,” and nowhere is this principle seen more clearly than in the billion dollar lies and bizarre cruelties of the dairy industry. It is a testament to the power of dairy advertising that otherwise intelligent adults can be made to believe that it is not only natural, but necessary to drink the breast milk of another species. In trying to expose this absurdity, one encounters even more absurd defenses and practices. This video is a perfect example, demonstrating the heartless cruelties visited on animals in the dairy industry, and the elaborate mental gymnastics that dairy producers perform in order to convince themselves and others that what they are doing is somehow okay. Not just okay, even, but wholesome and good, part of an honorable tradition.

Not so much. In this video, the farmer has just affixed a spiked plastic plate to the face of a male dairy calf in order to prevent the calf from drinking his mother’s milk. The spiked weaning nose plate is a variation of the spiked weaning nose ring, both originally invented to wean beef calves from their mothers. On most dairy farms, including small farms, calves do not get to stay with their mothers long enough to be weaned from them; according to the USDA, 97% of dairy calves are permanently removed from their mothers within 24 hours of birth; the rest are taken away in the first few days.

This is where milk comes from
