What about growing bananas for fruit? If you had asked me this question last year I would have said forget it! Apart from Musa Dwarf Cavendishi most edible fruiting bananas top 15ft to 25ft and need high temperatures which is just not practical in the UK unless you own a mini Eden Project greenhouse! Many fruiting varieties with yellow, red or even blue fruit are available from some specialist but what is the point? I visited a Banana specialist in America a few years ago who showed me around 80 varieties of Banana with many flavours of fruit on offer but none of them were practical for the British Isles.

If you insist on trying a fruiting banana, then Dwarf Orinoco or Rajapuri are the hardiest fruiting bananas that also make a attractive summer bedding alternative. The plants thrive in our cool summers and is easy to over winter in a cool greenhouse. Rajapuri is heavier leaved and more like Cavendishi in habit with a white bloom on the trunk and underneath the leaves. This has been used by Parks Departments as bedding for a number of years. Dwarf Orinoco is a bit more slender and both will fruit with the tops of the pseudostem reaching 6ft to 8ft, although it may take quite a few years to achieve the fruiting stage depending on the conditions.

One day on a banana-only diet cleared up any tummy issues better than any medicine.

Some do have seeds .... There are two types here , the cultivated type that you buy in the west , as you say , have no seeds. But there are the wild, 'forest bananas' , these grow like weeds , everywhere , and have seeds.

If you clear the jungle from a piece of land , and leave it , within 6 months it will be covered with these wild bananas , squirrels eat the bananas , shit out the seeds, and so they spread everywhere..... They're not often eaten, as the seeds are a bit troublesome , about 3mm diameter, and crunch when you bite them, but they tend to be only near one end of the banana , so it's not too bad.

So if the cultivated bananas are hit , they'll still be the ones with seeds, they won't die out, thanks to our friendly squirrels

I didn't know you have squirrels in Thailand too.
Good to hear squirrels over there is hard at work.
I've seen squirrels eat thrown away balckened banana skins. They do eat banana as well.

It's not really a garden ... very big piece of jungle/farmland about 10 football pitches in size...6 months ago we cleared about a football pitch sized piece and planted 80 durian trees... for the first 4 years they will be small so we also grow seedless bananas and watermelon between them, the trees are 8meters apart.

Wild bananas taste the same as cultivated.

The squirrels here are smaller and cuter than western ones .. they get in my house and run around the roof space in the night , making noise!!!
