Legion, the XX..
Quote:

What Shall we do about Claudius?.

The earliest known use of coal in the Americas was by the Aztecs who used coal for fuel and jet (a type of lignite) for ornaments..In Roman Britain, the Romans were exploiting all major coalfields (save those of North and South Staffordshire) by the late 2nd century AD.. While much of its use remained local, a lively trade developed along the North Sea coast supplying coal to Yorkshire and London..This also extended to the continental Rhineland, where bituminous coal was already used for the smelting of iron ore.. It was used in hypocausts to heat public baths, the baths in military forts, and the villas of wealthy individuals.. Excavation has revealed coal stores at many forts along Hadrian's Wall as well as the remains of a smelting industry at forts such as Longovicium nearby..After the Romans left Britain, in AD 410, there are no records of coal being used in the country until the end of the 12th century..Legion Company of the U.S. Army's 1st battalion 503rd Infantry Regiment 173rd Airborne Brigade stationed in Vicenza, Italy is named after Legio XX. They chose this name for the paratroopers' ability to fight fiercely behind enemy lines...

U.S. wounded being moved to aid station during battle for Hill 882..

The name Longovicium is derived from Brittonic, *longo-, "ship" and *uic-, "warrior/fighter"..Longovicium ( Lanchester Roman Fort) was an auxiliary fort on Dere Street, in the Roman province of Britannia Inferior..A construction slab identifies the Legio XX Valeria Victrix (Twentieth Legion) as having built the fort, but as is usual, this gives no real clue as to when the fort was actually built.. It is estimated to have been built later than the other forts on Dere Street, around 150 AD, and there are evidences that it was re-built around 230/240 AD and again in the early 4th century..The fort had a typical rectangular 'Playing Card' shape and had 4 gates, being surrounded by a ditch..Realising the near impossible task, Maximus decides that he and his legion of 6,000 men can succeed by laying out a series of military strategies along the west bank of the Rhine to prevent 6 Germanic nations - 250,000 people - from invading Gaul..Legio vigesima Valeria victrix, in English Twentieth Victorious Valeria Legion was a legion of the Imperial Roman army.. The origin of the Legion's name "Valeria" is unclear and there are various theories...

Lightbulb The Price of Coal

Set in a Yorkshire coal mine..

Poor maintenance of the mines is a major factor behind frequent accidents..Once underground, the only way a miner can communicate with the outside world is by using an intercom..

Meet the People dealing with preparations for an official visit to the colliery by Prince Charles..The humour revolves around the expensive and ludicrous preparations required for an official visit from a member of the Royal Family.. Some workers recognise this and cannot take it seriously.. Mangerment recognises it but has to 'play the game'.. Special toilets must be constructed "just in case" and destroyed after the visit..Back to Reality, takes place a month later and deals with an underground explosion that kills several miners and follows the attempts to rescue others that remain trapped..Original release 5 April 77...

All of the coal mined in the region is used to power the Tuzla thermoelectric power plant...Between 01:20 and 01:30 a.m. on 26 August 1990 a methane gaz explosion 1,800 feet below the surface caused a cave-in which buried the entire third shift who were near the site of the explosion..All 180 miners working in the shaft were killed..One miner, who operated the machinery which brought the lignite to the surface was the sole survivor...

The novel is written from the first person perspective of a teenage freelance photographer, who lives in a rundown yet vibrant part of West London he calls Napoli..223 pages..

Buddy Holly & the Crickets - Peggy Sue..

The Knox Mine disaster was a mining Incident on January 22, 1959, that is widely credited with single-handedly killing the mining industry in the Northern Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania. The Susquehanna River broke through into the many interconnected mine galleries in the Wyoming Valley between west/right-bank town of Exeter, Pennsylvania and Port Griffith, a left/east bank town in Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania, near Pittston..,The River Slope Mine an anthracite mine owned by the Knox Coal Company Tunneling sharply upwards toward river bed without having drilled boreholes to gauge the rock thickness overhead, the miners came to a section with a thickness of about 6 feet (1.8 m) - 35 feet (10.6 m) was considered the minimum for safety..It took 3 days to plug the hole in the riverbed, which was done by dumping large railroad cars, smaller mine cars, culm, and other debris into the whirlpool formed by the water draining into the mine..Twelve mineworkers died; 69 others escaped.. Amadeo Pancotti was awarded the Carnegie Medal for being the first worker to emerge from the Eagle Air Shaft, which was the only exit available for 33 of those trapped underground.. The bodies of the 12 who died were never recovered, despite efforts to pump the water out of the mine.. The victims were Samuel Altieri, John Baloga, Benjamin Boyar, Francis Burns, Charles Featherman, Joseph Gizenski, Dominic Kaveliski, Frank Orlowski, Eugene Ostrowski, William Sinclair, Daniel Stefanides, and Herman Zelonis..The Knox castastrophe was less deadly than the Twin Shaft Disaster..

Map of KnoxMine area and shafts..

At 3 o'clock in the morning on Sunday, June 28, 1896, ninety miners were at work in the Red Ash Vein of the Newton Coal Company's Twin Shaft Mine in Pittston when the roof quickly caved in.. It was believed at the time that all of the men perished..The concussion from the explosion was so great that it was heard for miles around.. The foundation of nearly every building in Pittston was shaken and windows and doors were rattled as in a tornado..In the houses nearer to the mine, persons were thrown from their beds, thinking an earthquake had occurred.. Immediately after the boom, the dreaded colliery whistle and town fire alarms sounded.. Families ran to the mine works.. Newspapers reported "havoc everywhere," from grief-stricken wives to frantic efforts at impenetrable tunnels of collapsed top rock and crushed shiver mi timbers..2 rescue tunnels were attempted, though volunteers sometimes removed only 20 feet (6.1 m) feet a day.. Hope faded for the victims of the disaster, most of whom were Irish and Lithuanian immigrants..There were 58 men and boys who died during the terrible cave-in, buried 434 feet (132 m) below ground.. In their wake, they left 31 widows and 101 orphans...

Jo is a 17-year old schoolgirl, with an abusive, 40 yr old alcoholic mother, Helen.. After sustaining a fall after school, Jo meets a black sailor called Jimmy who invites her on to his ship to attend to her grazed knee..The big ship sails down the alley alley o", I remember. But was it the last or the first day of September and does it have any historical relevance?..I always understood the Alley referred to the Manchester Ship Canal and the rhyme celebrates the first ship to sail along the canal.. In "A Taste of Honey" some Salford children can be heard singing the song..The ship canal took 6 years to complete at a cost of just over £15 million..It opened to freight on 27 February 1893 and to passenger traffic on 29 May 1893..At the end of construction, the canal company left in place the original construction railway route, and eventually developed track along 33 miles (53 km) of the canal's length..Manchester Liners established regular sailings by large ocean-going vessels..To service them it built 2 dedicated container terminals next to No. 9 Dock..Every month this allowed more than 10,000 tons of coal and 8,000 tons of cement to be delivered to sites along the canal excavation..The film opened on 14 September 1961 at the Leicester Square Theatre in London's West End..

Arrow Red Neck War

Mother Jones Born County Cork, Ireland..
Quote:
The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest laboor uprising in US history and one of the largest, best-organized, and well-armed uprisings since the American Civil War.. For 5 days in late August and early September 1921, in Logan County, West Virginia, some 10,000 armed coal miners confronted 3,000 lawmen and strikebreakers, called the Logan Defenders, who were backed by coal mine operators during an attempt by the miners to unionize the southwestern West Virginia coalfields.. The battle ended after approximately one million rounds were fired, and the US Army intervened by presidential order..On this trade thingy..

Child Labour in American coal mines, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, 1906..

On May 19, 1920, 12 Baldwin-Felts agents arrived in Matewan, including Lee Felts, and promptly met up with Albert Felts who was already in the area.. Albert and Lee were the brothers of Thomas Felts, the co-owner and director of the agency.. Albert had tried to bribe Mayor Testerman with 500 dollars to place machine guns on roofs in the town, which Testerman refused..The Baldwin–Felts Detective Agency was a private detective agency in the US..Baldwin, the senior member of the firm, was a native of Tazewell County, Virginia.. An avid reader of detective novels in his yooth, Baldwin was a small storekeeper in his early days.. He then studied dentistry, but left that profession in order to become a detective.. He began his career in 1884 with the Eureka Detective Agency in Charleston, West Virginia. After founding the Baldwin Detective Agency, he then moved to Roanoke, Virginia, to oversee security operations in the Norfolk & Western Railway’s coalfield district, later being appointed chief special agent..Before the arrival of pioneers, Tazewell County was a hunting ground for Native Americans..

That afternoon, Albert and Lee along with 11 other men set out to the Stone Mountain Coal Company property.. The first family they evicted was a woman and her children, whose husband was not home at the time.. They forced them out at gunpoint, and threw their belongings in the road under a light but steady rain..The miners who saw it were furious, and sent word to town.. After reviewing it, the mayor exclaimed, "This is a bogus warrant." With these words, a gunfight erupted and Sid Hatfield shot Albert Felts.. Mayor Testerman fell to the ground in the first volley, mortally wounded.. In the end, 10 men were killed, including Albert and Lee Felts.. 3 of the men were from the town, the 7 others were from the agency..This gunfight became known as the Matewan Massacre, and its symbolic significance was enormous for the miners.. The seemingly invincible Baldwin-Felts had been beaten by the miners' own hero, Sid Hatfield.. Sid became an immediate legend and hero to the union miners, and became a symbol of hope that the oppression of coal operators and their hired guns could be overthrown..In the short term, the battle was an overwhelming victory for management.. UMW membership plummeted from more than 50,000 miners to approximately 10,000 over the next several years, and it was not until 1935 - following the Great Depression and the beginning of the New Deal under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt - that the UMW fully organized in southern West Virginia..In the long-term, the battle raised awareness of the appalling conditions faced by miners in the dangerous West Virginia coalfields..In April 2008, Blair Mountain was chosen for the list of protected places on the National Register of Historic Places..Who is introducing the trade?..Angela..Tell her to put him on, them on the spot..

The Miners Strike - 1984 ..
Quote:
While there had been more than 1,000 coal mines in the UK during the first half of the 20th century, by 1984 there were only 173 still operating..Coal mining had been nationalised by Clement Attlee's Labour government in 1947 and was in 1984 managed by the National Coal Board (NCB) under Ian MacGregor..The mining industry was effectively a closed shop..Although this was not official policy, any employment of non-unionised labour would have led to a mass walkout of mineworkers..Also working in deep coal mines were overmen and deputy overmen, who supervised the miners and ensured their safety, and shotfirers, who assembled and detonated explosions to dislodge rocks and demolish structures..No mining could legally be done without being overseen by an overman or deputy overman..A strike nearly occurred in February 81, when the government had a similar plan to close 23 pits, but the threat of a strike was then enough to force the government to back down..At its beginning, the strike was almost universally observed in the snowfields of Yorkshire, Scotland, the North-East and Kent..

Serving Johannesburg..

In the first 27 weeks of the strike, 164,508 "presumed pickets" were prevented from entering the county.. On 26 March 1984, pickets protested against the police powers by deliberately driving slowly on the M1 and the A1 around Doncaster..When a group of Kent pickets were stopped at the Dartford tunnel and preventing from travelling to picket the Midlands, the Kent NUM applied for an injunction against use of this power..During the industrial action 11,291 people were arrested and 8,392 charged with offences such as breach of the peace and obstructing the highway..In many former mining areas antipathy towards the police remained strong for many years afterwards..On 16 July 1984, Thatcher convened an urgent Ministerial meeting and seriously considered declaring a state of emergency, with plans to use 4,500 military drivers and 1,650 tipper trucks to keep coal supplies available..The provision of welfare benefits became controversial..Dame Stella Rimington (Director-General of MI5, 1992–96) published an autobiography in 2001 in which she revealed MI5 'counter-subversion' exercises against the NUM and the striking miners, which included the tapping of union leaders' phones..

The Sun newspaper took a very anti-strike position as did the Daily Mail, , and even the Labour Party-supporting Daily Mirror and The Guardian became hostile as the strike became increasingly violent..The Morning Star was the only national daily newspaper that consistently supported the striking miners and the NUM..The stance of the Daily Mirror varied throughout the strike..Having initially been uninterested in the dispute, the paper's owner Robert Maxwell took a supportive stance in July 1984 by organising a seaside trip for striking miners and by meeting with NUM officials to discuss tactics..The Daily Mirror then adopted a more critical stance on the strike, and journalist John Pilger published several articles on the violence directed against strike-breakers..In November 1984, there were allegations that Scargill had met Libyan agents in Paris, and other senior officials travelled to Libya..Links to the Libyan government were particularly damaging coming 7 months after the murder of policewoman Yvonne Fletcher outside the Libyan embassy in London by Libyan agents..2 pickets, David Jones and Joe Green, died during the strike, and 3 teenagers (Darren Holmes, aged 15, and Paul Holmes and Paul Womersley, both aged 14) died picking coal from a colliery waste heap in the winter..One of the most publicised acts of violence came on 9 July 1984 when a group of pickets at Rossington colliery attempted to trap 11 NCB safety inspectors inside the colliery..Policing was extensive from the start of the 1984-5 strike..During the Battle of Orgreave, TV cameras caught a policeman repeatedly lashing out at a picket on his head with a truncheon..A murder in the former mining town of Annesley, Nottinghamshire in 2004 was a result of an argument between former members of the NUM and the UDM, an indication of continued tensions..The Soviet Union's official trade union federation donated £1 million to the NUM..In the aftermath of the strike, miners were often offered large redundancy payments in ballots, and these offers were accepted even at the most militant pits..The coal industry was finally privatised in December 1994 to create a firm named "R.J.B. Mining", now known as UK Coal..The successor company that contains the former property division, Harworth Group is still listed on the London Stock Exchange...

Italian theatrical release poster..

Quote:
Vittorio De Seta (15 October 1923 – 28 November 2011) was an Italian cinema director and screenwriter, considered one of the Italian cinema's great imaginative realists of the 1960s..His early documentaries focus on the everyday life of many of Sicily's poorest workers, and are notable for their lack of voice-over narration, quiet mood, and striking colour..Most villagers are played by actual people from the island, as is typical of neorealism, the very air you breathe is a poisonous fume..The car engine was turned on and the carbon monoxide began seeping into the room..

1955 Surfarara..

In the desolate areas of central Sicily, scattered among the lands cultivated by peasants, are sulfur mines, almost invisible from the outside..The camera, in the dawn of any day following the miners move towards the wells and wait for the companions of the night shift go back to the surface after eight hours of work.. Then up to them to get down and get to the level intended, they separate and disperse: push trucks, prepare drillers.. They spend hours: while the women out errands housework, the farmers work hard open sall'aria, miners stir the crushed material from the mine, as if they were on a dangerous ridge, almost waiting to materialize the misfortune, in a scroll of always the same time, until sunset, when it comes time to return home..Sulfur or sulphur is a chemical element with symbol S and atomic number 16..

Mt. Stromboli has been in almost continuous eruption for the past 2,000 years..There are 3 active craters at the peak..A significant geological feature of the volcano is the Sciara del Fuoco ("Stream of fire"), a big horseshoe-shaped depression generated in the last 13,000 years by several collapses on the northwestern side of the cone..Author J.R.R. Tolkien identified his volcano Mount Doom in Mordor with the volcano of Stromboli, according to scholar Clyde S. Kilby..In Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) by Jules Verne, the conclusion of the novel is set on Stromboli..There are several claims regarding the origin of the usage of the name stromboli for food in the US..I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip..What about 11venses?.Luncheon?.Afternoon tea?.Dinner?.Supper?.He knows about them, doesn't he?...

The Bersham Colliery bit..

Middle-aged Lilly Moffatt sets up a school in a Welsh coal mining town, despite the determined opposition of the local squire.. Eventually, she considers giving up..Then she discovers a promising student Morgan Evans, a miner seemingly destined for a life of hard work and heavy drink..With renewed hope, she works hard to help him realise his potential..Original release January 29, 1979..

The tip created by the Colliery..

Bersham Colliery was a large coal mine located near Rhostyllen in Wrexham County Borough, Wales..The mine accessed seams found in the Denbighshire Coalfield..The colliery worked for six years without major incident until 1880, when a major underground explosion killed 9 men, among them the colliery manager, William Pattison..In 1896, there were 711 men working at both shafts..There was further growth at the colliery, with 848 men working there by 1908, and 878 by 1918..As with most mining communities, sons followed their fathers into the mines; and the local communities of Rhostyllen, RhosllannerchruGog & Johnstown grew in size around the coal industry in the area..Another explosion killed a number of men in 1909..This was the final major incident at Bersham, barring another in 1933, when the timber headgear burned to the ground..The most prominent landmark left by the colliery is that of its spoil tip, known as Bersham Tip..

January 29 – Brenda Ann Spencer opens fire at a school in San Diego, killing 2 faculty members and wounding 8 students and a police officer..A reporter reached Spencer by phone while she was still in the house but had stopped shooting..The reporter asked Spencer why she carried out the shooting..She answered: "I don't like Mondays", which inspired Bob Geldof to write the Boomtown Rats' song by that name - Andrew Matthew Harrington (February 12, 1903) was an American Major League Baseball player who played in one game for the Detroit Tigers - B J Flores is an American pro boxer and MMA, and the grandson of Ralph, the pilot who crashed his small plane in the wilds of Canada's Yukon Territory..For two years Flores lived in one of the poorest areas of Mexico and helped by assisting in building houses, roofs, and other labor work for those less fortunate..While in Culiacán, Flores began training at the same gym where Julio Caesar Chavez trained as a child.. After watching Flores hand out numerous beatings in sparring sessions, the locals began calling him "Peligroso" meaning "dangerous"...

Lofthouse Colliery Disaster (1973) Part 4.mov ..

1973 March 21 Wednesday - Lofthouse Colliery was in Lofthouse Gate close to Outwood in the Stanley Urban District where many of the colliers lived.. Its site is now in the Wakefield district..A new coalface was excavated too close to an abandoned, flooded 19th century mineshaft..The sudden inrush of 3 million gallons of water trapped se7en mine workers 750 feet (228.6 metres) below ground..A 6-day rescue operation was carried out but succeeded in recovering only one body, that of Charles Cotton..Existing British Geological Survey records indicated that the flooded shaft did descend to the same depth but these records had not been checked by the NCB..Lofthouse Colliery subsequently closed in 1981, with many of the miners being transferred to the new Selby Coalfield..Retired miner stabbed trying to save MP Jo Cox was also hero of Lofthouse Colliery disaster..In military operations, NBC suits are intended to be quickly donned over a soldier’s uniform and can continuously protect the user for up to several days..

A rhesus monkey infant in one of Harlow's isolation chambers..
Quote:
Much of Harlow's scientific career was spent studying maternal bonding, what he described as the "nature of love".. These experiments involved rearing newborn monkeys with surrogate mothers, ranging from toweling-covered cones to a machine that modeled abusive mothers by assaulting the baby monkeys with cold air or spikes..The point of the experiments was to pinpoint the basis of the mother-child relationship, namely whether the infant primarily sought food or affection. Harlow concluded it was the latter..In contrast to the ABO blood group, immunization against RH can generally only occur through blood transfusion or placental exposure during pregnancy in women..Rh derives from rhesus and the terms rhesus blood group system, rhesus factor, rhesus positive & rhesus negative are also used..

Unnecessary Fuss USA ..

The footage was shot in 1983–84 by the researchers themselves as they inflicted brain damage on baboons with a hydraulic device..The experiments were conducted as part of a research project into head injuries caused by vehicle and sports Incidents..The footage shows the researchers laughing at the baboons as the brain damage is inflicted..A hydraulic device known as Penn 2 slams the baboon's head from behind, pushing it forward at a 60-degree angle with a force of what the researchers said was up to 1000 g, apparently intended to simulate whiplash..One sequence shows part of the baboon's ear being torn off along with the helmet.. After pulling the baboon's head from the helmet, the researcher is heard to laugh, saying: "It's a boy," then, "Looks like I left a little ear behind"..

The rhesus blood type named after the rhesus monkey was first discovered in 1937 by Karl Landsteiner and Alexander S. Wiener..The significance of the discovery was not immediately apparent and was only realized in 1940, after subsequent findings by Philip Levine and Rufus Stetson..This serum that led to the discovery was produced by immunizing rabbits with red blood cells from a rhesus macaque..The antigen that induced this immunization was designated by them as Rh factor to indicate that rhesus blood had been used for the production of the serum..An individual either has, or does not have, the "Rh factor" on the surface of their red blood cells...

In vertebrate anatomy, the pituitary gland, or hypophysis, is an endocrine gland about the size of a pea and weighing 0.5 grams (0.018 oz) in humans.. It is a protrusion off the bottom of the hypothalamus at the base of the brain..It is composed of 3 lobes: anterior, intermediate, and posterior.. In many animals, these 3 lobes are distinct..The intermediate lobe is present in many specie, but it regresses in humans at about the 15th week of gestation..In some animals (such as the claw-toed frog Xenopus laevis) production of MSH is increased when the animal is in a dark location..The clawed frog is a species of African aquatic frog of the Pipidae family..Its name is derived from the 3 short claws on each hind foot, which it uses to tear apart its food..An increase in MSH will cause darker skin in humans too.. MSH increases in humans during pregnancy.. However, in many red-headed people, and other people who do not tan well, there are vibrations in their hormone receptors, causing them to not respond to MSH in the blood..The Greek physician Galen referred to the pituitary gland by only using the (Ancient Greek) name, gland..The anatomist Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring coined the name hypophysis..There is a structure analogous to the pituitary in the octopus brian..The intermediate lobe is, in general, not well developed in tetrapods, and is entirely absent in birds..Sarvangasana is nicknamed "queen" or "mother" of all the asanas..Sirsasana is nicknamed "king" of all the asanas..The head is positioned upon the superior portion of the vertebral column...

The Beaconsfield Mine collapse occurredon 25 April 2006 in Beaconsfield, Tasmania, Australia..Se7enteen people were in the mine at the time..14 escaped immediately following the collapse..Larry Knight (44), Brant Webb (37) & Todd Russell (34), were the 3 miners who remained unaccounted for.. Knight had been killed in the initial rockfall, but Webb and Russell were still alive, trapped in part of the vehicle in which they had been working at the time of the collapse, known as a teleloader or telehandler.. They were in a basket at the end of the telehandler's arm, [where they had been applying steel mesh to a barricade prior to backfilling a stope.. It was initially misreported that the two miners were saved by a slab of rock that fell on top of the basket, but in a Channel 9 exclusive interview broadcast on 21 May, Webb and Russell stated that this was incorrect and that the "ceiling" above them was merely thousands of individual unstable rocks precariously packed together..The cage was partially filled with rock, and the men were partially buried under some rubble.. Webb seemed to have been knocked unconscious for a short time, and Russell's lower body was completely buried..When Webb awoke, the two were able to free themselves and each other from the fallen rock by cutting through their clothes and boots, which were stuck in the rock, using Stanley knives...The miners were able to survive by drinking groundwater, seeping through the rock overhead, which they had collected in their helmets.. Webb also had a muesli bar with him, which he offered to cut in half and share with Russell..

Jane Jacobs OC OOnt (born Jane Butzner; May 4, 1916) was an American-Canadian journalist, author, and activist best known for her influence on urban studies.. Her influential book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961) argued that urban renewal did not respect the needs of most city-dwellers.. The book also introduced sociological concepts such as "eyes on the street" and "social capital"..She was instrumental in the eventual cancellation of the Lower Manhattan Expressway, which would have passed directly through SoHo and Little Italy..As a mother and a writer who criticized experts in the male-dominated field of urban planning, Jacobs endured scorn from established figures..They were a Protestant family in a heavily Roman Catholic town..The Fortune piece brought Jacobs to the attention of Chadbourne Gilpatric, then Associate Director of the Humanities Division at the Rockefeller Foundation..The foundation had moved aggressively into urban topics, with a recent award to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for studies of urban aesthetics that would culminate in the publication of Kevin A. Lynch's Image of the City..In May 1958, Gilpatric invited Jacobs to begin serving as a reviewer for grant proposals.. Later that year, the Rockefeller Foundation awarded a grant to Jacobs to produce a critical study of city planning and urban life in the US..TNT is a TV station based in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia..Owned by Southern Cross Austereo, it is now branded as Southern Cross TV..

On 26 April a remote-controlled earth mover began clearing the rock underground.. On the morning of 27 April at 7:22 a.m., the corpse of one of the miners was found in the shaft.. At around 8 p.m., the corpse was retrieved and was identified as Larry Paul Knight, 44, of Launceston.. He was the driver of the telehandler..The two men sang "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers (the only song they both knew) in order to keep up their spirits, as they waited for successive blasts to occur in the tunnel..At about 5.45PM on 30 April two rescuers, Pat Ball the underground manager and Steve Saltmarsh, mine foreman, breached safety protocols by entering the 925 level, to the rockfall and yelled out. Webb and Russell began yelling "We're in here!" and this was how the rescuers found out they were alive..On 1 May 2006 rescuers were still 12 metres from the miners..They were also later sent a digital camera, a torch, dry clothes, magazines, iPods including music from the Foo Fighters and Kevin Bloody Wilson (upon request), deodorant and toothpaste (with Fluoride)..They alsoreceived letters from their families, and were able to write letters in return..As at 7 a.m. on Saturday 6 May the raise borer had drilled about 11 metres of the 14.5 metre rescue tunnel..On 7 May the rescuers reached a belt of hard rock that they found difficult to penetrate.. As the jack hammers they were using had little effect, they reverted to using low-impact charges..On the afternoon of 7 May prominent Australian journalist Richard Carleton suffered a attack at a press conference while at the mine..He was transported to hospital, before being pronounced dead by a doctor..On 8 May the horizontal tunnel was completed..At about 9:30 p.m. a probe passed through the rock below where the miners were located..On May 9, 2 weeks (14 nights) at 4:27 a.m. after being trapped nearly a kilometre below the surface, rescuers Glenn Burns, Donovan Lightfoot and Royce Gill finally reached the men, one of them yelling "I can see your light" when he broke through the ground which was separating him from the miners, to which the miners replied "I can see your light too"...Hundreds of journalists arrived in the town to cover the story, transforming Beaconsfield into a busy town..Some comedians joked at the time that the reason why the rescue took so long was because cables and wires being used by broadcasters at the site were blocking the path..Interest in gaining media deals with both survivors culminated with Oprah Winfrey's production company Harpo expressing interest..The story was extended by the continued stream of media reports detailing the ordeal, such as Enough Rope..The title of the show came from the phrase "give someone enough rope and they'll hang themselves"..The Death & Life of Great American Cities remains one of the most influential books in the history of American city planning..The West Tamar Council says engineers have told them heavy winter rain has led to an underground collapse of the mine shaft at Beaconsfield that could turn into a 35 metre wide sinkhole...

February 29, 1912 (Thursday) - Russian gold miners at the Lena Mining Company in Siberia went out on strike, originally in protest about the quality of food sold to them by the company - Serbia and Bulgaria secretly signed a treaty of alliance for a term of 8 years, with each pledging to come to the defense of the other during war.. The two nations fought together against the Ottoman Empire later that year during the First Balkan War, then against each other in the Second Balkan War and in World War One..
