Default yeah!!!

I'm listening to a lot of the stuff I was listening to in the 80's again, loads of post-punk like the incredible Ted milton and Blurt:

And they still rock!!!

And James Change & The Contortions, saw him in '81 in Rotterdam, best concert EVER, first concert I danced my ass off, started 2 hours late 'cause James was caught buying heroin in front of the venue

And the Gang Of Four of course, met them once, only for a moment in '79, for some reason they were all wearing pig masks....

Met Helios Creed from Chrome also once, I was working in the cafe, selling weed and hash, around '94, he bought a shitload, only after he left they said, man, that was Helios Creed, wish I would've known, I would've given him a 50 guilder block of Maroccan hash for sure, I was a huge Chrome fan for years already then.....

Saw Genesis P. Oridge back in '87 at one of the legendary Pandora Festivals in Rotterdam, with Psychic TV, before the show he was standing outside the venue with the band, all dressed in orange singing Hara Krishna songs The show was CRAZY, don't think he could do that now, huge screen with movies in the back ground, some of the stuff they were showing was borderline pedo shit really.....

Default jaipong!!!

But these days, I'm going to these kind of shows, often in small villages all around West-Java, Jaipong music, and sometimes these shows get wild as hell... Some 10 years or so ago the governor of West-Java who is an extremist right wing Muslim tried to put a stop to these shows because of the wild dancing that often goes with it but to no avail, this is deep Sundanese culture and the people were just not having it....

Then you've got Pergosi Odong Odong music, they play that at circumcision parties, those parties can get WILD, I've been to villages, far away in the mountains and the whole village goes crazy, everybody dancing, it's like a wild rave party, from the smallest kids to the oldest people, really, amazing, and I get into it too, you just lose yourself and you dance for hours and hours.....

Then there are the wayang puppet shows, this is the most famous group, the puppet player, Asep Sunandar passed away but his son Yogyaswara took over, the singer in blue is a friend of mine and when they play around the village where I live she always calls me, they start around 8 o'clock at night and finish around 5 in the morning, the music is amazing, I'm always on the podium with the musicians, sharing food, drink and smokes....

But for me, jaipong music is the best, I've become a total jaipong head, always hunting for old cassettes which are extremely rare nowadays... If you're interested, you can download hundreds of 'em on my blog:

YEAH!!!!

Default Wong Ching Yian, The Elvis of Singapore....

Listening to Wong Ching Yian (or sometimes spelled Huang Qing Yuan).... In the early 60's he developed some music styles together with Maurice Patton's The Melodians. He took elements of traditional Chinese music and started mixing it with all the stuff coming from Western countries, mainly rock n roll... He called it A Go Go and Off Beat Cha Cha and it just swept all over Asia like wildfire and even in the West you can find many, many A Go Go records from the 60's and early 70's, it can be incredibly trippy music, often going into psychedelics... I've got loads and loads of records from him, started collecting him right on time because now they're SUPER rare and SUPER expensive..... They used to call him The Elvis of Singapore
