Polish beef tastes like beef ( a 24oz steak there costs about £2) as it should. |

![]() You can buy Oca tubers here. They are andean tubers like potatos and you can earth them up in the same way. Apparently they are traditionally grown after potatos as they use different nutrients in the soil. I have been growing them for a few years and I like them (kind of like potato with sour cream). Also you can graft potatos to other nightshades like tomatos, peppers and aubergine. That way you can get a root crop as well as a fruit if you are low on space. |

I know someone who grew potatoes in old tires. That is, the first layer of soil with the seed potato was within the rim of the first tire. As the top of the plant grew, another tire and more soil was added--the second tire sitting upon the first. And then when the top of the plant grew more, a third tire was added. I think he got to only 3 tires when it was time to dig up the potatoes. Don't know if the rubber, nylon etc. from the tires leached into the soil or not. He didn't complain about it.

No, actually he was quite thin and mainly wore black. Is there someone else out there who mainly wears white who does the tire and potato thing? I don't watch tv and don't live in the UK, so have limited exposure to points for culinary products.

I was recently in the Philippines where I tried a vegetable called ube--a purple sweet potato. Very sweet, too sweet in my opinion, but widely loved and used by Filippinos. They even make cakes with it. Not much taste except very sweet. Anyone else tried ube?

I'm showing my age here ... this advert still makes me laugh, but I hated Smash.
Nothing like the real thing. |

i didn't get pics but the other day i was on a job and in buddy's garden he had potatoes. he wanted me to come over for a closer look. said he'd never seen anything like it. neither had i.
there were little spuds growing from the plant up above ground sort of in the same fashion as tomatoes do. i've grown lots of potatoes and never seen such a thing and never saw it in my father's or any one else's garden. any one here ever see such a thing? |
