Just my two...

When my cousin died in 2003, he was a recovering hard drug user. But unfortunately he had been using for so long when he stopped completely, and started using methodrome(?) his body just gave up and he had a heart attack and died in his sleep. Some days later his mum was receiving phone calls from her dead sons mobile phone, which just happened to be in Police custody, don't ask...I didn't, and was in pieces locked in a safe. Before his funeral his sister bought the Robbie Williams album to play the song 'Feel' as she couldn't find the single to buy. It was the only track on the CD that didn't play whilst it was in the house until the funeral.

Recently my Nan died. Not long after, my Dads phone and door bell would ring once at midnight on the dot up until the funeral, with a strong smell of my nans perfume.

Weird

Great thread - thanks for sharing your experiences Metacomet I really enjoyed your stories and the others on this thread.

I've had a few experiences, here's one I will share.

When I was 4 or 5, I was really afraid of the dark. When I went to bed, every night, I used to check under the bed, draw back my sheets and blanket, check inside the wardrobes and make sure the doors were closed properly. Then, stand by the light switch, have one last look around the room, switch off the light, take a few quick steps and then jump into bed, because if I didn't I was sure something would grab my feet and drag me under the bed. I would fall asleep at night making sure my hands and feet were under the covers, I was petrified that if an arm or foot would poke out from under the covers I would be dragged out of the bed. I had regular reccuring nightmates that my bed floated into another world and, for instance, I would be floating down a river, in my bed, where creatures lurked in the river or along side it and hence, if an arm or leg hung over the side I would be dragged off by them.

One night, I woke up very early in the morning, day was breaking and I turned over on my side so I was looking directly at a built in wardrobe which had a door catch on it that you swivelled round to lock, which as I've explained I ensured I did every night. That morning, the door was wide open and two figures were in the wardrobe. I can only describe them as being human in shape and looking like the effect when people get 'teleported' on the Star Trek show, glittering and glowing different colours. No facial faetures or anything, just shimmering light. I just looked. For some reason I was not scared and fell back to sleep. When I woke I sat up very quickly and looked at the door, it was closed.

I've never had a dream similar to it or a dream about waking up in a dream before, or since, and I'm not sure to this day if it was just a dream. I've always believed it was real.

Reading all this stuff (particularly Metacomet's posts) about houses which just have a gloomy, oppressive, lightless feel to it even in the middle of the day has surprised me. I'd thought I was the only one to experience a house like that, in my late childhood/early adolescence. The house was a Victorian detached place in South East England, and I distinctly remember at least the two largest rooms in the house getting no light whatsoever at any time of day (my understanding being that to build dark and gloomy houses was the 'fashion' in this period.) It felt completely oppressive and had a bad vibe to it.

Originally I slept in the biggest bedroom with my younger brother, which was one of the rooms which was dark 24/7. I had massive trouble sleeping in there or playing in there, for some reason, and started sleeping in my mother's room with her and playing there too during the day, because it, at least, got some light and felt less stifling.

I didn't know this until many years later, but the day I, my mother, my younger brother (2 at the time) and older brother moved in, while my mother moved a stack of boxes into her room with my younger brother standing at the doorway, he asked her "Mummy, who's that man staring at me from behind those boxes?" and indicated a corner of the room. Obviously there was nobody there. But my mother wouldn't have told me that as a child because I was ridiculously terrified by ghost stories. Still am sometimes (the shadow-man thread kept me awake for a week ).

Once I got to about the age of 11, though, I was growing up and wanted my own room and space. So my mother let me occupy her room and moved into the big middle bedroom which had been renovated (but still felt bad). I was pretty thrilled to get my own room at long last, but my joy really wasn't long lasting, especially after I hit 12. As I'm sure you all know there's something really odd about 12-year old girls and ghostly manifestations.

When I was 12 I started to really experience odd goings on in my room. I used to lie in bed reading with just a lamplight on, and would see all kinds of moving shapes highlighted against my dark curtains out of the corner of my eye while my focus was on the book. One time I saw what I thought was a woman in a dress gliding past the end of my bed, which totally sent a shiver up my back. The space by my curtains was a bizarre hive of activity at night, I used to see shapes manifesting and moulding into one another. But I just put it down to an overactive imagination.

I started to get more scared of my staircase too. My room was right next to the staircase of the house and I frequently flew up and down the stairs as quickly as I could, terrified that someone might be following me up or down. I also refused to look down the staircase if there were no lights on downstairs. And then I had my first, and last, poltergeist experience.

I used to stand my favourite hardcover books up on my bedroom desks and chest of drawers, slightly open so they'd stand, probably about 5 or 6 in total. I was lying in bed trying to sleep with my face buried in the wall, as it frequently was/is, and started when I heard the sound of one of the books crashing to the floor. No windows open to blow them or anything like that. We had a cat but she steadfastly refused to go in that room, ever (I wonder why? ). Over the course of the next 15 minutes or so, while I lay there terrified and barely able to breathe, I heard the sound of about 3 or 4 more books crashing to the floor, along with a few other indistinguishable items of mine no doubt left out by way of decoration.

After I begged and pleaded inside my head for it to go away, it finally did. The next morning, naturally I found about 5 of my stood-up books on the floor, some of them in positions I couldn't possibly explain, along with several other items belonging to me which had found their way to odd places on the floor.

Even though it got better over the course of the next year, that house NEVER started feeling ok. My mother also reported that she heard odd knocks on the windows late at night and various other 'bad feelings' about the house. I wasn't surprised. I've never found or lived in such an oppressive and horrible feeling house since, and I don't think I'd go back there for any amount of money. I still have the odd nightmare about it too, though oddly it doesn't feel as bad in my dreams as it did in real life.

That is exactly how I was with the stairs to the attic + hallways and rooms in my friends house. They never had lights on and I never looked directly into them because I knew I would see something.

Also, if you stood still for more than a few seconds and 'let' something approach you, before you knew it you could feel something circling you and looking at you. So... I rarely stayed in one place by myself in the house.

Great posts btw.

Thanks. And I know what you mean about not looking into dark spaces. I used to feel the same way about the 'dark' rooms in my old house at night if they weren't lit. It's funny as well because I've now got into the habit of doing it anywhere that's dark, even though I feel safe in my current house. I have to run to the light switch all the time, wherever I am. I never felt circled in my old house, but I felt constantly watched. Just that uneasy feeling, even when I was in bed trying to sleep.

I personally have experienced some very creepy homes. Two of which were places my best friend since age 7 has lived. The first disturbing place was an old house built in the 1750s back in the woods where she lived until we were about 14. Mind you all there was a lot of turmoil in the home due to her parents' neglectful behavior, drinking and eventual divorce. However, mysterious things happened before they moved in. One of the previous owner's was a man who was scientist who lived in the attic, ignored his family and did experiments (this room was my friend's room until she was 12). When they moved in they found barrels in the old barn with dead pigs stuff in them in a weird fluid; this was the doing of the scientist. The attic bedroom my friend and I slept in as children was very creepy, my friend hated being in there alone! When I would stay the night I would see shadows moving on the ceiling and walls. By age 12 she had to leave that room and migrated to a smaller room across the hall, that we made into a more comfortable place to hangout. Other strange parts of the house was their large, enclosed staircase. My friend's mother claimed to have seen a large clear, male apparition at the top of the steps one day when we were about 11. Everyone hated the steps, including myself and my mother. We would always run up them as fast as we could. The dining room could make you experience nausea; in the 1800's there was a fire and you could see where the fireplace was and how it was sealed off. They were never able to find out if anyone died in the fire for certain or not. My friend and her mother both saw moving orbs that came from the dinning room to the living room. I hated that house; it made everyone who was there uneasy, and it was not a place you'd want to be alone. You always felt as if you were being watched, and at times you'd feel this heaviness. The house always seemed dark too, even during the day with lights on!
My friend's next home for 1.5 years was a house built in the 1980s. However, something strange must have happened there before my friend and her mother moved in. That house also always seemed dark, even though it had very little trees surrounding it and got plenty of sun. The mood of the home was always sullen. The finished basement and one extra bed room always carried a bad vibe, and my friend and I dreaded that we had to watch television (and sneak alch lol) in the basement. You always felt as if someone was in the corner watching you. Many people from our town said no families ever lived there for more than about 1-2 years. None of us ever saw physical ghosts in this place, but there was always a haunted feeling.

One more story, where I myself saw an apparition. Before my parents split when I was 11 I lived in an old farmhouse from the late 1800's any rural town Mid Atlantic USA. Anyway, this house also had weird vibes even though we had lived there for 11 years. My grandmother even told my mom not to live there because the energy seemed bad; however, my parents were poor and it was the only home they could afford, and my mom felt pressed to buy it because she was pregnant with me. My childhood room was originally used as storage and was in the back of the hallway and did not have a door on it until I was 7. I think I must have been about 6, I was laying in bed and having a hard time sleeping; it must have been late everyone was asleep already. I was looking towards the doorway when I saw what I assumed to be a young boy. He had empty eye sockets, and no distinct facial features. He did not have feet, he was all white and tattered looking. He looked at me and drifted away. I never saw him again. For a long time I thought I was just imagining it until some of our neighbors before we moved said they saw a ghost of a little boy walking up and down the road for years. Apparently this little boy had drown years ago. This reaffirmed me that spirits are real

ps. I loved everyone's stories. It's great to share these experiences.

I know that I am quoting from post dating back over a year, but still I feel like adding.

I can often feel a 'presence' most of the time I will be alone. Sometimes there will be other people in the house, but on the other side of the house. Its not just when I am at home either, I can sometimes feel like I am being watched when I am at work or at the store. When I look in the direction of where I feel it coming from, there is nothing there.

The only thing I did experience, and experienced many times, is that I was using a tool, like a screwdriver, and put it besides me when I was done using it, and when I needed it again I could not find it anymore. I turned the entire room upside down, no screwdriver. I went to another room to see if it was there, no screwdriver. I went back to my room, and there it was, lying right in the middle of the room, on the floor. This happened quite a few times.
I read a lot about this, I too have had it happen.

the elusive scissors update:

Okay, my story is about to get even weirder . I wrote the above post in September of last year. Two weeks ago my sister and I were on the phone and she was telling me about a "Coast To Coast" she heard about gnomes in your house and how they move stuff lol. According to my sis, a "gnome expert" was on the show explaining that when your stuff goes unexplainably missing you can just say out loud "Okay gnome, can I please have my ____ back?" and the object will be returned to you. My sister and I were laughing about this (for obvious reasons) but deep down I was wondering if it would work. I never actually said anything out loud, but I did wonder if some little gnome-like critter was swiping my scissors because there is absolutely no logical explanation for what has happened with them. So....while I was thinking about this I opened my bathroom closet....and there the scissors were literally just laying there on the middle shelf, it a completely obvious place!! I have cleaned and organized this closet at least 4 times this year, and there THE scissors just sitting there lol! Although I could not utter the words "gnome, please give me back my scissors now," rofl, my scissors "magically" appeared right after the phone conversation with my sister. I wonder when the gnomes will need them again .

People would totally think this is a wind up story!

But I've heard of genuine disappearing objects before, and people seem willing to consider that an object could outright disappear.

If they have to consider it the work of a non-physical or invisible being though...

Did this freak you out?
