Default "Admitted to the degree of Master of Arts...?"

If you look at a University degree it doesn't say "John Doe has been awarded a Master's degree in blah de blah."

It says "John Doe has been admitted to the degree of Master of Arts."

Someone told me once that the British degree system mimics the three degrees of the "Blue Lodge": Bachelor, Master, Doctor - a Doctor is therefore the equivalent of a Master Mason.

This belief assumes that either the Masons created the modern university system, or that a third power created both, or something else that I can't think of.

But why the strange choice of words on a Master's degree certificate? I have often wondered about this - any insight appreciated.
