Default Twitter keeps all deleted messages and deleted accounts

What is the point of keeping all this information !? ...

They also keep suspended accounts and knows the locations of those who posted. ...

FIRST IT WAS FACEBOOK and now it looks like Twitter is in the 'we may need to address our data handling' game, as TechCrunch has found that the social network keeps hold of your direct messages. Even if you've sent a strange DM to your celebrity crush who accidentally followed you when Twitter was but a small thing all those years ago, security researcher Karan Saini told TechCrunch that Twitter still has such messages on record.

Through digging around in a file from an archive of his own data, which he obtained through the social network from accounts that were no longer on Twitter, he found that Twitter still had messages from years ago. According to TechCrunch, Saini also reported a bug he found a year ago, but has only just disclosed, which means that he could use a since-deprecated API to dig up old direct messages even if they'd been deleted by both the sender and the recipient. But more alarming is the fact that Twitter seems to hoard this DM data, a bit like an information-hungry Smaug. This is also a bit of a head-scratcher given Twitter's privacy policy says that anyone leaving Twitter will have their account "deactivated and deleted"; looks like only parts of the account get purged.

What's the point? I think the answer is right there in your face. Twitter is a data mining operation, much like Facebook and the others. All data has a value to someone, whether it's for use in "educating" AI or to one of the alphabet agencies. What's to stop the shadow government from re-activating a dead account and using it for their own purposes? They are in the business of deception and this is just another was of practicing it.

Is anyone surprised? It's obvious they are creating a profile of every single person who uses social media.

It's to form a profile of each user.

It will be used against you when the system starts to judge us.

Just like the Chinese.

Every like or dislike. Comments and diatribes. Information and help.

It's for a social charter.

Didn't you know?

Who cares?

Anyone who uses Twitter deserves everything they get.

....And those that weren't told?

If it was right there up with the benefits of the product that their information was sold then they would want a piece of the action. Like us all.

Ricky Gervais said recently that Twitter is like reading toilet walls.

It is for people too dumb to write anything longer than 20 characters or whatever it is.

Yeah, online privacy and the selling of personal information is a huge issue, but I've got no sympathy for dickwads who waste their time on Twitter.

We're a couple of generations into the internet now, so it's not like there is any reason to NOT know how you're being screwed over with your personal data.

Better to focus on how to minimize your digital footprint and on being more positive and proactive on every front than to waste that time tugging at the pants leg of evil people pleading for them to stop being quite so evil.

They'll get theirs.

Anyone rubbing their hands in angst about Twitter or Google doing nefarious things should be directed straight to the 'No Shit, Sherlock!' complaints counter.

Twitter has got to be the most dumbed down form of communication I have ever seen. Probably by design. The entire smartphone generation gets their news via sensationalized headlines and little blurbs designed to fit on a 3-inch screen. These are the future leaders of our world - LOL!!
