In the UK they are both called catapults, but since the ancient catapult hasn't been used since medieval times, and it was only used then for scaring birds, most people understand a catapult to be a forked arrangement with rubber bands attached. Presumably there are still regiments of Mounties armed with string and pouches and that's where your confusion stems from?

Arent ancient catapults more commonly known as the trebuchet?
I think catapult was a slang term.

Nowadays a catapult is a hand held device.

And as for the term slingshot - that is an even older invention than the trebuchet.

if the brits call a slingshot a 'catapult', they are confused, as are you.

I got mugged a lot going home in the dark, always more than one person. I wouldn't even think of fighting back and risking my life.

Escape is the best defence if you can do it. Learn parkour and no one will be able to catch you.

Not really the best option for anyone now over the age of 25.

why?

If someone wants to learn parkour they can do it at any age.

Unless you like to put limits on your potential innit.

LOL. There's so many scenarios were that would be completely useless if you never had a greater running speed speed than your attacker(s.)

In the street I carry my house keys.

In the home there are many household products at my disposal and some arty things.

And the cat - early warning system

I'm sorry that happened to you but you raise the most relevant point here. Teen boys attack together very rarely if ever one on one. A walking stick does have merit here as it would keep your distance a nice knobbly Shillelagh would effing hurt. But a Kubotan, cold steel shark pen, etc etc wouldn't help at all.

Perhaps Vinda's suggestion of 2million+ scoville unit chilli would be a deterrent but totally illegal YOU would get done as you had it in your pocket with the INTENT of using it. Unfair but there it is. Hairspray is more ambiguous as it may be the nearest deterrent to hand.

Avoidance is key don't use your ipod look around you stay in well lit areas with people around if you can't get a taxi. Krav Maga is great as is Pencak Silat but most people don't need to put themselves in the situation to use it when a bit of preplanning can avoid trouble.

I've got a large number of slingshots/catties and am active on those forums the Americans don't have a problem with us calling them catapults I'm bewildered why you do BD? Yes they can be dangerous but since they're aren't that easy to aim or reload quickly not viable for criminals thank fuck.

Carrying with intent is one thing but reporting a crime is another.

I am in the proces of making one myself, disguised as a .....insert device name here... and I dont intend on reporting what I do with the attackers afterwards either!

It does take a lot to kick the shit out of an attacker if you have never been 'on the attack' before yourself. You are asking yourself to do what you would never consider doing ever. But I think that a few blows to the jaw and a few kicks to the belly area and I think that you will feel better knowing that the dicks will be drinking from a straw for a while and be bleeding from inside for years. Do you know where their kidneys are?

I intend to also go through the pockets of my attackers too. What I might do with the info is one thing, but what it might do to them is another.

If I were being attacked by the same dudes on a regular basis I would also not consider reporting that too...other than to a select friend.

Fight back or not. For me its them or me. And they dont give a fuck about me...so why should I?

Nelly the peacfull but being put into a corner.
