Selection & Training - Part 1/3 ..
Quote:
After leaving the British Army, McAleese became a mercenary in Angola for the FNLA, taking command of the unit after the capture of Costas Georgiou.. He then emigrated to Rhodesia and joined the Rhodesian SAS.. At Zimbabwean independence in 1980, McAleese departed for South Africa and was assigned to a paratrooper unit called 44 Parachute Brigade within which he was required to form a pathfinder unit. After ending his task he worked for COIN Security Group (Pty) Ltd, a civilian security company.. After a serious parachuting accident he went back to the UK and did some mercenary work in Colombia.. In the mid 1990s Peter worked training Russian bodyguards in Moscow with Mike Steele.. McAleese worked in the security industry in Algeria, Russia and Iraq for 12 years..

Pathfinders were required to operate behind enemy lines in small teams (two to six) for extended periods, often under conditions of enduring physical, mental and emotional stress and fatigue, while carrying out their primary and any other supporting tasks to effective completion.. They were expected to be able to operate far behind enemy lines for up to two weeks at a time without resupply, while carrying full operational kit that included all necessary water and food, personal weapons and ammunition, radios and ops medic kits, LZ/DZ marking equipment, survival equipment, camouflage equipment, specialist weapons with extra ammunition, demolitions equipment, and any other specialist operational equipment.. They would often walk for twenty kilometres or more, especially during the infiltration phase, during the day or at night in hostile environments, all the time maintaining strict discipline in anti-tracking, personal camouflage, noise suppression, and generally leaving no trace of their presence.. They were also required to be able to set up small ‘invisible’ hides where they could lie up during the day undetected by herders looking for ‘enemy’ tracks and signs...

The National Service Pathfinder was expected to demonstrate mental, physical and emotional toughness under conditions of stress and discomfort while maintaining high standards of personal discipline. He had to be able to think and act clearly and effectively and take leadership where necessary to complete the mission at hand regardless of the circumstances. It is clear therefore that although the national service Pathfinder was not a professional or career soldier, he had to be able to perform similar tasks a professional Special Forces soldier and therefore the selection process could not be ‘diluted’ too much from standards required for career soldiers.. The selection process implemented was therefore structured to weed out candidates who could not meet the required standards and criteria for extended external operations and any other Pathfinder operational requirements...

Lightbulb Mission Evasion

Quote:
Soon afterwards, another vehicle went past on main beam and illuminated a road sign up ahead.. Chris was gutted by what it said.. He was 30 miles further from the border than he'd estimated.. That equated to another two nights of travel, which depressed him severely.. When it came to first light, Chris couldn't find a decent LUP and started flapping.. After a lot of running around, he eventually got into a big culvert under the main road..That seemed to be fine, until he heard the ominously familiar sound of goat bells...

A herd of goats was coming up the culvert heading, he supposed, for the fields on the other side.. Chris legged it from his hiding place and managed to scramble about 6 feet up the embankment before an old goat herder emerged, followed by a donkey and the world's supply of goats and a pair of dogs.. They were bound to scent him.. He had a split second in which to decide whether to shoot the old man to be on the safe side, or just do a runner..The dogs made the decision for him, running straight past without looking up.. The rest of the procession followed without a flicker..Chris couldn't believe it. He had been within spitting distance of them all. He could only think that the dogs had been put off by the scent of the goats or that of the old boy's dirty dish dash..They would almost certainly be going back that way before last light, however, so Chris knew that he'd have to move.. He started crawling along a wadi, having to get down every time a vehicle went along which was often..

The ground had changed by now, from lush, irrigated vegetation to wadi systems and small mounds covered with thorn bushes. It was hard going. After about 5 miles he found a large depression in the ground and settled down for the rest of the day..Chris had used up his supply of muddy river water and was dehydrating badly. He knew, however, that he had to keep away from the Euphrates, since every hut seemed to have a dog in it.. He'd just have to keep going and hope that he'd find water elsewhere soon..At last light he got up and headed due west, walking for several hours..At one point an air-raid siren went off ahead of him, and through the night sight he could make out an emplacement that appeared to consist of several S60s, together with radio masts and sentries who were patrolling.. He boxed around the position and came to a small stream flowing over white rock.. Not wasting a second, he undid his water bottles and quickly filled them.. Then he moved on straightaway..

57 mm AZP S-60 (Автоматическая зенитная пушка С-60, (AZP); Automatic anti-aircraft gun S-60) is a Soviet towed, road-transportable, short- to medium-range, single-barrel anti-aircraft gun from the 1950s.. The gun was extensively used in Warsaw Pact, Middle Eastern and South-East Asian countries..The S-60 and its Chinese copy (the Type 59) have seen combat in several wars all over the World, e.g. the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War in the Middle East and the Soviet war in Afghanistan. During the Vietnam War, the S-60 was the keystone of North Vietnamese low-altitude air defense and was most effective between 460 meters and 1,500 meters..In Iraq (Iran–Iraq War, Gulf War and Iraq War), the S-60, normally deployed in battalions of 36 guns, served consistently in defense of divisional headquarters and field artillery assets..Syrian S-60 guns were actively used during the Syrian Civil War by both the army and different rebel groups.. As many other guns originally designed for antiaircraft use, most of the time they were used in shelling ground targets..The S-60 was sold to at least 37 different countries during the Soviet era..S60: This material and its container must be disposed of as hazardous waste, a safety phrase in chemistry..There was originally an S sector of the London postal district, which was abolished in 1868...

The twin summits of Pen y Fan and Corn Du were formerly referred to as Cadair Arthur or 'Arthur's Seat'..

Intelligence analysis is the process of taking known information about situations and entities of strategic, operational, or tactical importance, characterizing the known, and, with appropriate statements of probability, the future actions in those situations and by those entities..The Royal Anglian Regiment formed on 1 September 1964 carried out tours-of-duty throughout "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland.. The regiment was involved in the Bloody Sunday massacre in Derry in 1972, when 14 unarmed civilians were killed..In a reported friendly fire incident, on 23 August 2007, one of a pair United States Air Force F-15E fighter aircraft called in to support a patrol of the 1st Battalion in Afghanistan dropped a bomb on the same patrol, killing 3 men, and severely injured 2 others.. It was later revealed that the British forward air controller who called in the strike had not been issued a noise-cancelling headset..The RAR has a unique relationship with the Bermuda Regiment, a Territorial battalion of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda...

Lightbulb The Clinic

Book Cover...
Quote:
The book tells the story of 4 British Army soldiers, including two members of the Special Air Service, who are assassinated by a hit squad known as "The Clinic"..The murders are carried out over a 17-year period, on the orders of a Dubai sheikh whose 3 sons were killed by British forces in Oman during a battle with Communist guerrillas..Fiennes claimed that he himself was targeted by the group, but was saved by a group of vigilantes calling themselves the "Feather Men"..In 2011, Fiennes stated in an interview with The Daily Beast that the book was "all fiction", and reaffirmed that he had the signed permission of the soldiers' families, including Kealy's wife, to mention them in the book...

Killer Elite Opening Scene..

The Officer in Command, Captain Mike Kealy observed the waves advancing on the fort, but at first did not order his men to open fire because he thought it was the "Night Picket" coming back from night shift..The Night Picket were a loyal group of the Omani Army positioned on the slopes to warn the BATT house of Adoo troop movements..There were also a small number of Omani Intelligence Service personnel in the BATT House, a small contingent of Pakistani soldiers and a member of British Military Intelligence seconded to the OIS. They joined the team on the roof and fired on the Adoo with SLRs and other small arms..Initially some of the Pakistani soldiers were reluctant to join the defence of the fort because their roles with the BATT were largely administrative, but they obeyed orders from Mike Kealy and the British Military Intelligence Corporal...

Overflying the BATT House, Mirbat..

The 25-pounder gun (now known as the "Mirbat gun") used by Fijian Sergeant Talaiasi Labalaba during the siege is now housed in the Firepower museum of the Royal Artillery at the former Royal Arsenal, Woolwich.. Though killed in action, Sgt Labalaba displayed remarkable bravery by singlehandedly operating the 25-pounder gun, a weapon normally requiring four to six soldiers to operate.. Labalaba's heroism was a key factor in halting the Adoo's vicious assault on the emplacement, allowing time for reinforcements to arrive..Kealy received the Distinguished Service Order, Takavesi the Distinguished Conduct Medal, Bennett and McNeice the Military Medal.. These were announced three years after the event.. An Omani from the fort, Walid Khamis, was injured during the battle and received the Sultan's Gallantry Medal - Oman's highest award...

Date palm leaves are used for Palm Sunday in the Christian religion. In North Africa, they are commonly used for making huts..The leaves are also used as a lulav in the Jewish holiday of Sukkot..The species name dactylifera "date-bearing" comes from Ancient Greek dáktulos "date" (also "finger") and the stem of the Greek verb ferō "I bear"Fossil records show that the date palm has existed for at least 50 million years..Where craft traditions still thrive, such as in Oman, the palm tree is the most versatile of all indigenous plants, and virtually every part of the tree is utilized to make functional items ranging from rope and baskets to beehives, fishing boats, and traditional dwellings..In the Quran, Allah instructs the Virgin Mary to eat dates when she gives birth to Jesus; and, similarly, are recommended to pregnant women..The Gaza Strip, especially Deir al-Balah ("Village of Dates"), is known for its exceptionally sweet red dates..

The battle is also mentioned by Frederick Forsyth in his book The Veteran, where a member of the SAS team is murdered by two criminals 30 years after the engagement..Fiennes responded in a statement issued to the Daily Fail through his publisher: he did provide copies of the manuscript for family members of the deceased men to review, and the SAS was also provided with a copy prior to the book being published.. There were no complaints on the manuscript being published..there is a paperback edition of The Feather Men which includes photographs of the victims and other real life characters, a map (Oman in 1976) and other illustrations (e.g. a block diagram of the modification of the BMW car brake system to incorporate remote radio control) and an index..

Mir (Russian: Мир, lit. Peace) was a space station that operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001, owned by the Soviet Union and later by Russia.. Mir was the first modular space station and was assembled in orbit from 1986 to 1996. It had a greater mass than any previous spacecraft.. Until 21 March 2001 it was the largest satellite in orbit, succeeded by the International Space Station after Mir's orbit decayed.. The station served as a microgravity research laboratory in which crews conducted experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology and spacecraft systems with a goal of developing technologies required for permanent occupation of space..Height 27.5 m (90.2 ft)..Mir was the first continuously inhabited long-term research station in orbit and set the record for the longest continuous human presence in space at 3,644 days until 23 October 2010 when it was surpassed by the ISS.. The station was maintained at an orbit between 296 km (184 mi) and 421 km (262 mi) altitude and traveled at an average speed of 27,700 km/h (17,200 mph), completing 15.7 orbits per day...

Mir in orbit high above the Earth..Reentry 23 March 2001..

Bats are mammals of the order Chiroptera (from the Greek χείρ - cheir, "hand" and πτερόν - pteron, "wing") whose forelimbs form webbed wings, making them the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight. By contrast, other mammals said to fly, such as flying squirrels, gliding possums, and colugos, can only glide for short distances. Bats do not flap their entire forelimbs, as birds do, but instead flap their spread-out digits, which are very long and covered with a thin membrane or patagium...Three bat species feed solely on blood: the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), the hairy-legged vampire bat (Diphylla ecaudata), and the white-winged vampire bat (Diaemus youngi). All three species are native to the Americas, ranging from Mexico to Brazil, Chile, and Argentina..Although rare, infection of humans by rabies from vampire bat bites has been documented; for example in 2010 4 children in Peru died after being bitten..Bat-borne viruses are transmitted via bat bite and transfer via saliva, as well as aerosolization of salvia, feces, and/or urine. Like rabies virus, newly emerging bat-borne viruses can be transmitted to humans directly by bats.. These include Ebola virus, SARS, and the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus..Most victims are not aware of either having been bitten by a bat or exposed to a bat's secretions..Bats invading human living and working spaces will normally offensively attack by biting and urinating on the victim to mark the victim's location...

Situation map Ebola outbreak 8 August 2014...
Quote:
Operation Barras was a British Army operation that took place in Sierra Leone on 10 September 2000.. The operation aimed to release 5 British soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment who had been held by a militia group known as the "West Side Boys".. The soldiers were part of a patrol that was returning from a visit to Jordanian peacekeepers attached to the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) at Masiaka on 25 August 2000 when they turned off the main road and down a track towards the village of Magbeni. There the patrol was overwhelmed by a large number of heavily armed rebels, taken prisoner, and transported to Gberi Bana on the opposite side of Rokel Creek..The British Army negotiated the release of six of the 11 men on the patrol, but were not able to gain the freedom of their Sierra Leone Army liaison officer and the other men before the West Side Boys' demands became increasingly unrealistic. Negotiators concluded that these were delaying tactics rather than an effort to resolve the crisis; by 9 September, the soldiers had been held for over a fortnight.. Fearing that the soldiers would be killed or moved to a location from which it would be more difficult to extract them, the British government authorised an assault on the West Side Boys' base, to take place at dawn the following day, 10 September...

Major ethnic groups within Sierra Leone...

The ground operation was conducted by D Squadron, 22 Regiment Special Air Service—who assaulted Gberi Bana in a bid to extract the Royal Irish—and elements of 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment (1 PARA), who launched a diversionary assault on Magbeni. The operation freed the 5 soldiers as well as 21 Sierra Leonean civilians who had been held prisoner by the West Side Boys.. At least 25 West Side Boys were killed in the assault, as was one British soldier, while 18 West Side Boys—including the gang's leader, Foday Kallay—were taken prisoner and later transferred to the custody of the Sierra Leone Police.. Many West Side Boys fled the area during the assault, and over 300 surrendered to UNAMSIL forces within a fortnight...

It was July 2002, and civil war had been rampaging through Liberia for 13 years, transforming one of Africa's oldest democracies into a ghoulish landscape.. Drugged-out militias manned checkpoints decorated with human intestines and severed heads.. Small children were forced into battle by the thousands.. Women were raped and turned into sex slaves known as 'bush wives'. Enemies were disembowelled, cooked and cannibalised..All told, human rights groups estimate, more than 600,000 Liberians were murdered, raped, maimed or mutilated in the conflict..

The West Side Boys, also known as the West Side Niggaz or the West Side Junglers, were an armed group in Sierra Leone, sometimes described as a splinter faction of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council..Many members of the group were children abducted after their parents had been killed by the "recruiters".. Some of these children were forced to participate in torturing their parents to death in order to brutalise and dehumanise them... The West Side Boys were heavy users of poyo, (homemade palm wine,) and heroin bought with conflict diamonds. Conflict diamonds were also used to purchase many of their weapons, which ranged from FN FAL/L1A1 rifles, AK-47/AKM rifles and RPG-7 grenade launchers to 81 mm mortars and ZPU-2 anti-aircraft guns.. Most of their vehicles were hijacked from UN food convoys...

West Side Boys| Black Zorro Ops...

Under questioning a former commander in the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), continued to testify about key events of the war in Sierra Leone and crimes committed by rebel forces in its course.. He also described the rebel hierarchy, at the top of which he said was Charles Taylor, whom he described as the “the owner of the RUF”..Mongor testified that the RUF placed human heads on sticks at checkpoints, a practice that was also used by the NPFL, which also used human intestines as rope at checkpoints.. Mongor testified that Taylor had driven through such checkpoints in Liberia when Mongor worked as one of his security escorts. Finally, Mongor testified that after the withdrawal of the AFRC/RUF from Freetown in February 1998, an AFRC commander called Savage oversaw mass killings in Tombodu – throwing the bodies into what became known as “Savage Pit”..The RUF received so many complaints that it sent another commander, Emmanuel Williams (“Rocky”) to attack Savage, but Savage fled and there were reports he went insane..Prosecutor Koumjian asked if anyone in the RUF had ever been punished for any of these many incidents of killings, and Mongor replied “no”..Asked to explain earlier testimony about an order to make operations “fearful”, Mongor said this meant to kill people and burn houses so that survivors and the enemy were afraid. He described further RUF tactics to create terror: carving “RUF” into the chests and backs of civilians, amputations, and placing human heads on sticks at checkpoints..

Given the real interests at stake in Sierra Leone, it raises questions over a possible Nigerian involvement in the British troops being taken hostage by the West Side Boys.. There is evidence that the British troops had expected friendly cooperation from the West Side Boys. The main criticism of the British presence in the area came from the deputy UN commander Brigadier-General Mohammed Garba of Nigeria..Kabbah declared the civil war officially over in early 2002.. Tens of thousands of Sierra Leoneans across the country took to the streets to celebrate the end of the war..Kabbalah (Hebrew: קַבָּלָה‎, literally "receiving/tradition") is an esoteric method, discipline, and school of thought that originated in Judaism..Kabbaah's definition varies according to the tradition and aims of those following it,.

Hi yea lightgiver I was wondering which topic you pulled "Arthur's Seat" from. I'm am a follower of your works an materials on, many subjects that you talk about. Which are important to me as, I try to understand many of the things such as Freemason an people's fears of the Boys club.

The image you display on Arthur's Seat is a special image. I pulled down Dan .S. shot.

I'm not sure when I will get to really study it as, I have much on the go. I was wondering if you post or send it to me via on site Email < if you think it might disrupt your topic) the thread where you pulled the image. I like to go throw that topic thread.

thank you for your works
Much love your friend A Skys

Lightbulb Queen of the Highway

Hi cinderdarkskys.. not wanting to get bogged down with too much chit chat you have to remember a big part of the special forces training is pyschological, and thats exactly what the newspaers etc do, play on the Psyche with their daily dose of sensationalist stories..and people actually pay for it...

US 27 no longer exists in Michigan..

Sensationalism is a type of editorial bias in mass media in which events and topics in news stories and pieces are over-hyped to increase viewership or readership numbers..One presumed goal of sensational reporting is to increase or sustain viewership or readership, from which media outlets can price their advertising higher to increase their profits based on higher numbers of viewers and/or readers...

'There's no news like bad news...

Take for example the marine shooting in chatalot..before anyone else the daily mail had all the info.. photos of the shooter and his family etc within the space of 24 hours..all that info is being sent over to the UK from america..it appears to me they have the info in place before the actual event takes place..It had an average daily circulation of 1,708,006 copies in March 2014, and was the first British paper to sell a million copies a day..It was at the outset a newspaper for women, the first to provide features especially for them, the only British newspaper whose female readers constitute more than 50% of its demographic..It has over 100 million unique visitors per month to its website..

Arrow Desert Fugitives

The Serpent And The Rainbow opening ...
Quote:
An SAS soldier has spoken for the first time of his epic 110 mile desert trek surviving off a leaking goatskin water bottle and a handful of dates.. In 74, there was controversy in the US surrounding goatskin products originating in Haiti.. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control discovered that some Of these products contained deadley Anthrax spores...An inquiry into a man's Da'at from anthrax has concluded that "on balance of probabilities" he contacted it from playing or handling West African drums...

Major Mike Sadler today and in North Africa during the Second World War..

Major Willis Michael Sadler’s extraordinary journey is part of the series of heroic exploits that have been disclosed in the SAS War Diary..One of a handful of surviving original SAS men, Maj Sadler, 93, known as Mike, was navigator for the regiment’s founder David Stirling, guiding raiding columns for hundreds of miles behind enemy lines in North Africa..In 1943, the officer was driven to the brink of death when a column led by Col Stirling set out from Libya to link up with the American forces in Tunisia..Driving for hundreds of miles a day and night, the exhausted column finally got through the Gabès Gap on the Tunisian coast and hid in a narrow wadi..but the men had been seen by German troops, who waited for nightfall then sealed off the wadi entrance with an armoured car and moved in..

Maj Sadler said: “I was woken in my sleeping bag by some German Afrika Korps chap who beckoned us to keep lying down. They went down line detaining the rest of the patrol”..However, with the Germans taking care of their comrades, he and a fellow soldier, Johnny Cooper, “nipped out of our bunk and made a run for it”. The rest of the patrol was captured, including Stirling..The fugitives spent the day hiding in a ditch, helped by Arab goat herders who drove their animals over them to give cover from their pursuers. The soldiers were equipped with only what they had slept in — their boots and battledress tunic, although one of the Arabs gave them a damaged goatskin water carrier..“For the next 3 days and four nights we walked from east to west with great salt lakes to one side,” said Maj Sadler.. “Fortunately I knew the lay of the land and how to navigate but it was still pretty rugged going.. We managed to replenish the goatskin with some brackish water from a well and we had a few dates for food to keep us going but that was it.. We were quite flat out by the time we made it to the Free French lines”..There was a shortage of water, and the main diet was tins of meat and vegetables, bully beef and corned beef fritters...

The zahato is the traditional goatskin bottle of the Basque shepherds.. The nozzle, traditionally in horn, is fixed by a red collar.. The zahato is carried across the shoulder with the red cord which surrounds it along the seam..I have heard it said that a higher proportion of Basque people have O-negative blood than other populations and that this is because they are the oldest ethnically pure group in Europe.. Is there any truth in this assertion?. Is the blood group an inherited characteristic?...It is very interesting that the Rh Negative blood is more common in the Celitc and Basque peoples ?...

Watchtower at a heavily fortified base in Crossmaglen..

Gorleben is known as the site of a controversial radioactive waste disposal facility, currently used as an intermediate storage facility but planned to serve with the salt dome Gorleben as a future deep final repository for waste from nuclear reactors.. The waste comes from Germany's nuclear power plants, was reprocessed in France at La Hague, and the unusable remains then sent back to Germany in spent nuclear fuel shipping casks for final storage, according to the contract with the reprocessing company, Cogema..Before German reunification in 1990, both West and East Germany ratified the Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany..Since July 2007,the only German nuclear base is located in Büchel Air Base, near the border with Luxembourg..The City of Sadler is served by the S and S Consolidated Independent School District...

Arrow The Motherland Calls

I shine not burn..

Captain Robert C. MacKenzie..
Quote:
S.C.R, B.C.R (30 November 1948 – 24 February 1995) was an American professional soldier whose career included service as an infantryman in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, the C Squadron 22 (Rhodesian) SAS, the South African Defence Force, and the Transkei Defense Force..As a contributing editor for unconventional operations for Soldier of Fortune magazine, he was sent to cover conflicts in different hot-spots around the globe, including Mozambique, Central America, Croatia, Bosnia, Russia, Thailand, Suriname, Taiwan and Cambodia.. At the time of his death, he was in command of and training the Sierra Leone Commando Unit (SLCU)..After finishing high school MacKenzie was awarded an appointment to the USAF Academy.. He, however, opted to join the Army, not wishing to miss out on the Vietnam War.. At the Army Recruiting Station in San Diego, California, he enlisted as an infantryman.. By 1967, he was airborne-qualified, had completed the jungle operations course in Panama and was sent to Vietnam. On 29 May 1967, a bullet wound suffered storming Mother's Day Hill ended his army service..After a year in the hospital, the US Army declared him 70% disabled and he was permanently retired.. His last duty assignment was with Co B 1st Bn(ABN) 327th Infantry..

The Wild Stork...

In 1970, MacKenzie traveled to Rhodesia in Africa, and passing the rigorous selection course, joined the Rhodesian Special Air Service, where from then on until 1980, he rose through the ranks from Trooper to Captain and SAS Squadron Commander..MacKenzie gathered what little intelligence he could in the face of the government's impatience.. In preparation for the assault on the hills, jets borrowed from the Nigerians were to drop cluster bombs on the rebel positions in order to soften them up.. However, the Russian pilot flying a Mi-24 helicopter tasked with bringing in the Nigerian commander who would communicate with the jets, without any explanation simply hovered over the camp on the 23rd and left.. Calls to HQ fell on deaf ears..MacKenzie, leading from up front with Tarawali and Lieutenant Andy Myers, came under fire from a bandit ambush.. Tarawali was killed in the first volley, and an attempt to carry his body back was made.. MacKenzie ordered that everyone should retreat and the senior Gurkha medic saw MacKenzie take 2 rounds through his legs and one through his back..According to a video interview, a fellow Rhodesian Special Air Service operator stated that after capture, MacKenzie was killed and subsequently eaten by the rebels.. Whether this is true or not remains a mystery..

The origin of the name Ravenna is unclear, although it is believed the name is Etruscan.. Some have speculated that "ravenna" is related to "Rasenna", the term that the Etruscans used for themselves, but there is no agreement on this point..Although an inland city, Ravenna is connected to the Adriatic Sea by the Candiano Canal..Robert C. MacKenzie is survived by his wife, Sybil MacKenzie and a son, Ian MacKenzie..He was the son-in-law of Ray Steiner Cline, Deputy Director for Intelligence for the Central Intelligence Agency in 1962..On 10 May 1970 Sabo's platoon was part of a force of 2 platoons from Bravo Company on a mission to Se San, Cambodia..This battle became known as the "Mother's Day ambush..The surname Mackenzie in Scottish Gaelic is MacCoinneach which means son of the fair bright one...

Lightbulb Beyond the Legend

Arriving at R.A.F. Lyneham, Wiltshire...
Quote:
William Speakman-Pitt, VC (born 21 September 1927) is a British recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.. He was the first man to receive a VC from Queen Elizabeth II. As of February 2015 he is 1 of 6 living VC holders..He was born and raised in Altrincham, England. He was 24 years old and a private in the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), British Army, attached to the 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers during the Korean War when the following deed took place at United Hill, for which he was awarded the VC..

On 4 November 1951 in Korea, when the section holding the left shoulder of the company's position had been seriously depleted by casualties and was being overrun by the enemy, Private Speakman, on his own initiative, collected 6 men and a pile of grenades and led a series of charges.. He broke up several enemy attacks, causing heavy casualties and in spite of being wounded in the leg continued to lead charge after charge.. He kept the enemy at bay long enough to enable his company to withdraw safely..Press reports of the time reported that Private Speakman began throwing bottles at the enemy after running out of grenades.. The bottles were in fact beer bottles sent to the line for platoon consumption (40 men-approx 4 per man).. By the time the platoon were attacked, the bottles were empty, thus constituting suitable weaponry...

He later achieved the rank of sergeant and served in Malaya (with the SAS) Borneo and Radfan..Due to economic hardship, Speakman sold his original VC, using the money to put a new roof on his cottage, but later got a genuine replacement.. His Victoria Cross is displayed in the National War Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle, Scotland.. He was interviewed for the 2006 TV docudrama Victoria Cross Heroes which also included archive footage and dramatisations of his actions..(A series introduced by HRH The Prince of Wales commemorating 150 years of the VC)..In a ceremony held in Seoul on 21 April 2015, for visiting veterans of the Korean War, Speakman gave a replica of his Victoria Cross and other medals to the people and government of South Korea..Bill Speakman is currently a uniformed in-pensioner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea..The Royal Hospital was founded by King Charles II in 1682 as a retreat for veterans..The provision of a hostel rather than the payment of pensions was inspired by Les Invalides in Paris..It was announced in 2007 that female ex-service personnel would be admitted on the completion of modernisation of the long wards..Dorothy Hughes (aged 85) was the first, soon followed by Winifred Phillips (aged 82)..The records at Chelsea Hospital show that another woman, a Mrs. Christian Davies, was admitted to Chelsea Hospital circa 1717, and was awarded a pension for her service in the army and the wounds she received in the service of the King...

Releasing jamming-Typical sewing, weaving, baling..Hydnellum peckii is an inedible (though not toxic) fungus, and a member of the genus Hydnellum of the family Bankeraceae.. It is a hydnoid species, producing spores on the surface of vertical spines or tooth-like projections that hang from the undersurface of the fruit bodies.. It is found in North America, Europe, and was recently discovered in Iran (2008) and Korea (2010).. Hydnellum peckii is a mycorrhizal species, and forms mutually beneficial relationships with a variety of coniferous trees, growing on the ground singly, scattered, or in fused masses...The fruit bodies with a white edge, although the shape can be highly variable.. Young, moist fruit bodies can "bleed" a bright red fluid that contains a pigment known to have anticoagulant properties similar to heparin.. The unusual appearance of the young fruit bodies has earned the species several descriptive common names, including strawberries and cream, the bleeding Hydnellum, the bleeding tooth fungus, the red-juice tooth, and the Devil's tooth...As in all mushroom-producing fungi, the fruit bodies (sporocarps) are the reproductive structures that are produced from fungal mycelium when the appropriate environmental conditions of temperature, humidity and nutrient availability are met..The fruit bodies of Hydnellum peckii are found growing solitary, scattered, or clustered together on the ground under conifers, often among mosses and pine needle litter. H. peckii is a "late-stage" fungus that, in boreal forests dominated by jack pine, typically begins associating with more mature hosts...

Young specimens "bleed" a red juice...

The classification of the Mollicutes has always been difficult..The Firmicutes (Latin: firmus, strong, and cutis, skin, referring to the cell wall) are a phylum of bacteria, most of which have Gram-positive cell wall structure.. A few, however, such as Megasphaera, Pectinatus, Selenomonas and Zymophilus, have a porous pseudo-outer-membrane that causes them to stain Gram-negative..The kingdom Animalia contains approximately 35 phyla, Plantae contains 12, and Fungi contains 6..Current research in phylogenetics is uncovering the relationships between phyla, which are contained in larger clades, like Ecdysozoa and Embryophyta...Bacillus is a genus of Gram-positive, rod-shaped (bacillus) bacteria and a member of the phylum Firmicutes.. B.subtilis has proved a valuable model for research.. Other species of Bacillus are important pathogens, causing anthrax and food poisoning..Although the fruit bodies of H. peckii have been described as resembling "Danish pastry topped with strawberry jam", and Hydnellum species in general are not known to be poisonous, they are inedible due to their extremely bitter taste..Hydnellum peckii (Binomial name Banker 1912) can bioaccumulate the heavy metal caesium.. In one Swedish field study, as much as 9% of the total caesium of the topmost 10 cm (3.9 in) of soil was found in the fungal mycelium..The fruit bodies of this and other Hydnellum species are prized by mushroom dyers...

Lightbulb A Stroll through the Old Town of Dunblane

Royal Scots Dragoon Guards ~ The Bells Of Dunblane..
Quote:
It is worth strolling through the Old Town of Dunblane with its pleasing mixture of 18th century, Victorian and contemporary buildings.. It is strung along the Old Great North Road from Bridgend, to the High Street, round the Cathedral, up the Braeport and through Ramoyle.. Along this road came the armies of William the Conqueror and Edward 1st, “The Hammer of the Scots”, who told his son, later Edward II, to strip the lead off the roof of the Cathedral to help with the siege of Stirling Castle.. Back down the road came the followers of Wallace and Bruce to fight at the Battles of Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn..As you wander along the narrow streets of the Old Town there is a lot to see.. After crossing the old bridge by the Stirling Arms look under the bridge and you will see the yellow stone work and the single arch of the original bridge built in 1410 by Bishop Finlay Dermoch.. Along with 84 others that were previously stolen, they deliver them to her ancient country estate, De Vil Mansion...

Dun is a generic term for an ancient or medieval fort. It is mainly used in the British Isles to describe a kind of hill fort and also a kind of Atlantic roundhouse..The Dün is a hill chain in northwestern Thuringia, Germany.. It runs west to east, and forms the northwestern edge of the Thuringian Basin..The dun gene is a dilution gene that affects both red and black pigments in the coat color of a horse.. The dun gene has the ability to affect the appearance of all black, bay, or chestnut-based horses by lightening the base body coat and suppressing the underlying base color to the mane, tail, legs, and primitive markings..Devin (Persian: دوين‎‎, also Romanized as Devīn; also known as Deven, Doon, and Dūn) is a village in Dar Pahn Rural District, Senderk District, Minab County, Hormozgan Province, Iran...

As you approach the Cathedral you will see on your left the Leighton Library. It was built in the late 1680s to house the library of Bishop Robert Leighton which he had gifted to Dunblane together with money for the building.. He was Bishop of Dunblane from 1661 to 1670 and then Archbishop of Glasgow.. The Library is frequently open to the public in the summer months..Tragically Dunblane’s quiet and dignified reserve was shattered for ever by the murder of a Teacher and 16 Primary One pupils on 13 March 1996.. There are several memorials to those who were killed.. A stone designed by Richard Kindersley is in the Cathedral, stained glass windows at St Blanes and the Church of the Holy Family, etched windows at the Dunblane Centre, a small garden at the Four Ways Roundabout and a beautiful fountain at Dunblane cemetery..With the family devastated at the loss of their puppies, Pongo uses the Twilight bark to carry the message via the dogs and animals of London...

Wild Britain with Ray Mears..
Quote:
Mears dislikes the term "survivalism" and balks at people calling him a "survival expert". "I can't understand people preparing for disaster," he says. "We should be preparing to enjoy life in the world. That's not to say there aren't survival skills in what I do, but that's the shorthand of a much bigger and more beautiful subject." The term he prefers is "bushcraft" – the art of understanding and being at one with the natural world. "You learn the value of the things around you, and that forever changes your perspective on nature. It makes you feel at home in places we are otherwise brought up to believe are threatening. That's one of the things I really object to in television – this constant rhetoric that wild places are inherently dangerous. They're not. They're fine. It's just whether you do the right thing or not."..

John 'LOFTY' Wiseman..

The other thing that annoys Mears are telly stunts – the I'm A Celebrity …Get Me Out of Here approach to the natural world. "In recent years the lines between entertainment and documentary have been blurred," he says, "and that's a mistake.. People now don't trust what they see on TV"..

"I had a big argument recently with a producer who wanted me to walk across a sand dune to give it scale.. But I said: 'You just don't do that.. You don't go trekking through the desert like in Lawrence of Arabia..The sound of nature is important.. I'll sometimes sit in the woods and listen to the wind in the trees..
