TUTANKHAMEN THERE NEVER WAS A CURSE

...
Interesting to compare that with this Telegraph article, in which a historian alleges that the mysterious deaths surrounding the Tutankhamun curse were actually a series of Jack-the-Ripper style murders carried out by none other than Alasteir Crowley :-

Hirson was reported missing in February 1994, days before his 18th birthday. He had been released from a brief stay in a psychiatric hospital and was due to meet a friend when he disappeared without trace.

A family member told French radio the missing youth had "no reason to be in the Côte d'Azur when he had told his mother he was planning to go to Spain".

"The family has no connections in the south-east" of France, she said.

Curse of Tutankhamun may have been work of Satanist killer
Six mysterious London deaths famously attributed to the 'Curse of Tutankhamun' were actually murders by notorious Satanist Aleister Crowley, a historian claims in a new book.

Incredible parallels between Crowley and Jack the Ripper have also been discovered during research by historian Mark Beynon.

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, London was gripped by the mythical curse of Tutankhamun, the Egyptian boy-king, whose tomb was uncovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter.

More than 20 people linked to the opening of the pharaoh's burial chamber in Luxor in 1923 bizarrely died over the following years - six of them in the capital.

Victims included Carter's personal secretary Captain Richard Bethell, who was found dead in his bed from suspected smothering at an exclusive Mayfair club.

Bethell's father Lord Westbury then plunged seven floors to his death from his St James's apartment, where he reportedly kept tomb artefacts gifted by his son.

The mystery of Tutankhamun's tomb takes another twist
03 Nov 2013

And Aubrey Herbert, half-brother of Carter's financial backer Lord Carnarvon, also died suspiciously in a Park Lane hospital shortly after visiting Luxor.

At the time, a frenzied Press blamed the 'Curse of Tutankhamun' for the deaths and speculated on the supernatural powers of the ancient Egyptians.

But Mr Beynon has now drawn on previously unpublished evidence to conclude the deaths were all ritualistic killings masterminded by Crowley, an occultist dubbed "the wickedest man in the world".

After unique analysis of Crowley's diaries, essays and books and inquest reports, the armchair detective argues that he was a Jack the Ripper-obsessed copycat killer.

Crowley, who called himself 'The Great Beast', apparently had his own motives to tarnish the legacy of Carter's legendary discovery.

The gods and goddesses of Crowley's own religious philosophy, Thelema, were mainly drawn from ancient Egyptian religion.

He believed himself to be a prophet of a new age of personal liberty, controlled by the ancient Egyptian god Horus.

It is likely that he would have found Carter's excavation sacrilegious and wanted revenge, according to Mr Beynon.

In his new book 'London's Curse: Murder, Black Magic and Tutankhamun in the 1920s West End', published this week by The History Press, Mr Beynon pins seven deaths on Crowley, six of which took place in London:

- Raoul Loveday (16 February 1923): the 23-year-old Oxford undergraduate was a follower of Crowley's cult at a Sicilian abbey. He died on the same day at the very hour of Carter's much-publicised opening of Tutankhamun's burial chamber. He died after drinking the blood of a cat sacrificed in one of Crowley's rituals and Mr Beynon argues that he was deliberately poisoned.

- Prince Ali Kamel Fahmy Bey (10 July 1923): a 23-year-old Egyptian prince shot dead by his French wife of six months, Marie-Marguerite, in London's Savoy Hotel shortly after he was photographed visiting the tomb. Mr Beynon says that Crowley and Marie-Marguerite had been lovers in Paris. She was working as a hostess at the Folies Bergère and he was a regular patron at the same venue. He suggests that Crowley put her up to the shooting.

- Aubrey Herbert (23 September 1923): shortly after Marie-Marguerite's acquittal, Aubrey Herbert, the half-brother of Lord Carnarvon, died of blood poisoning after a routine dental operation went suspiciously wrong at his private hospital in Park Lane. He had only recently returned from his own trip to Luxor. Mr Beynon speculates that Crowley was behind the death and may again have used Marie-Marguerite to do his dirty work.

- Captain Richard Bethell (15 November 1929): Howard Carter's 46-year-old personal secretary was found dead in his bed at Mayfair's exclusive Bath Club. Bethell was said to have been in perfect health. It was initially thought that he died of a heart attack but his symptoms raised suspicion that he was smothered to death as he slept. Crowley had only recently returned to London and was often a guest of novelist W. Somerset Maugham at the club.

- Lord Westbury (20 February 1930): Bethell's father, Lord Westbury, 77, was believed to have thrown himself off his seventh floor St James's apartment. But Mr Beynon found that it was practically impossible for an elderly man to have climbed out onto the window ledge and suggests that Crowley threw him off.

- Edgar Steele (24 February 1930): only four days later, Edgar Steele, 57, who was in charge of handling the tomb artefacts at London's British Museum, died at St Thomas' Hospital after a minor stomach operation. Mr Beynon speculates that Crowley was behind the death.

- Sir Ernest Wallis Budge (23 November 1934): A former Keeper in the British Museum's Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities, he was found dead in his bed in Bloomsbury aged 77. A friend of Lord Carnarvon, he had been responsible for displaying the artefacts from Luxor. Mr Beynon says there is evidence that Budge and Crowley were associates on the London occult scene.

Crowley, who was born into a wealthy upper class family in 1875, had a controversial doctrine for life of 'Do What Thou Wilt'.

The bisexual heroin addict gained notoriety for advocating sexual promiscuity and prostitution and was dubbed 'the wickedest man in the world' by the Press.

Mr Beynon paints a picture of a dangerous schizophrenic known to have murdered his servants in India.

Crowley never mentions the deaths in his diaries but often wrote that his mood had "lifted" the day after them.

He was obsessed with Jack the Ripper, writing numerous essays and poems about him.

He socialised with Ripper suspect Walter Sickert and Mr Beynon argues that Crowley used the Ripper's killing spree as inspiration for his own efforts years later.

Crowley wrote in his diaries that he believed the locations of five of the Ripper's murders in Whitechapel in 1888 formed a pentagram - an important star-shaped symbol in Satanism.

Mr Beynon claims that the locations of five of Crowley's 'murders' form a copycat pentagram.

Crowley believed that the Ripper's murders had afforded him special powers, including invisibility.

Mr Beynon says that he thought his murders would also render him invisible.

To test his theory, he famously walked through London's Café Royal restaurant ridiculously dressed in a mustard-coloured cloak adorned with occultist symbols.

When customers fell silent and were too perturbed to speak to him, he assumed they could not see him.

Outlining his macabre theory, Mr Beynon said: "When I researched these deaths, Crowley's name popped up again and again.

"There is plenty of circumstantial evidence linking him to all the deaths and his diaries and books are riddled with clues linking him to these crimes.

"I have just put all the pieces of the jigsaw together.

"So much of Crowley's belief system was steeped in ancient Egypt.

"He would have seen the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb as desecration.

"This was a man given to extensive world travel and yet we know he was in London when at least four of the six deaths occurred."

He added: "I hope the book will appeal to anyone with an interest in crime or London history.

"I was fascinated researching London in the 20s and 30s.

"On the surface, it was very glitzy and glamorous but there was a dark underbelly that provided the ideal stage for this story.

"Everyone was obsessed with the supposed Curse of Tutankhamun striking down high society victims.

"But until now, no-one has ever realised that they may well have been murdered."
and there's this:

A comment left today on The Needle blog...

"Sorry to jump in here but a quick mention on Fernbridge to raise spirits after leaks and pronoucements. Remember Christmas is coming… well its arrived early. So much for references to desk top detectives…good advice though… so I and others went out into the summer sun and well we hit the jackpot. In fact it is a game changer. So I can feel with ease that we are back in control and are going to win the big prize."

What Kind of Secrets Must be Kept Hidden for Over One Hundred Years & to Protect Whom?

Scotland Yard is battling to keep 123-year-old files on Jack the Ripper secret.

15 May 2011

Four thick ledgers compiled by Special Branch officers have been kept under lock and key since the Whitechapel murders in 1888.
Jack the Ripper murders reported by the Police News
Scotland Yard is battling to keep 123-year-old files on Jack the Ripper secret.

Trevor Marriott, a Ripper investigator and former murder squad detective, has spent three years attempting to obtain uncensored versions of the documents.

But he has been repeatedly refused because the ledgers contain the identities of police informants – and the Metropolitan Police insist that revealing the information could compromise their attempts to gather information from “supergrasses” and other modern-day informants.

Last week, Mr Marriott took Scotland Yard to a tribunal in a last-ditch attempt to see the journals – containing 36,000 entries – which he believes contain evidence which could finally unmask the world’s most famous serial killer.

The legal case has cost the taxpayer thousands of pounds and has even involved a senior Scotland Yard officer giving evidence anonymously from behind a screen.

Four thick ledgers compiled by Special Branch officers have been kept under lock and key since the Whitechapel murders in 1888.

Revealed: the secret Sir Alfred Beit diaries that may tell of British royal family scandals

10 September 2006

SECRET diaries believed to contain the inside story of British royal family scandals have been suppressed by the late Lady Clementine Beit to protect Queen Elizabeth II

The diaries, which are referred to in a special clause in Lady Beit's will, were written by her husband, the wealthy art collector Sir Alfred Beit, and are now held "under lock and key" by a Dublin solicitor.

In her will, which was published in Dublin two weeks ago, Lady Beit ordered that the diaries should not be revealed to the public until 21 years after the death of Queen Elizabeth or 70 years after Lady Beit's death, whichever period is the shorter.

The will of Lady Beit, who lived at Russborough House near Blessington, Co Wicklow, has now left a tantalising mystery as to what royal secrets her husband possessed and why they would be so damaging to the queen.

Both Sir Alfred Beit and Lady Beit, who was a cousin of the famous Mitford sisters, were at the heart of the British business, political and social establishment from the Thirties until their death.

Do the diaries contain details of the royal family's oft-cited links with the Nazi party in Germany before the war? Or is it something more personal, some sexual secrets of the royal family that Sir Alfred and Lady Beit want to keep hidden? Because of the "secret" clause in her will, we can now only guess.

The intriguing reference to the sensational diaries is contained in the Last Will and Testament of Lady Clementine Beit, published by the Probate Office in Dublin two weeks ago. It said:

"I bequeath my late husband's Diaries to my Executors and Trustees to be held by them upon the following Trusts:

"(a) To retain the same in their sole possession and custody under lock and key for a period which shall end 21 years from the date of the death of the last survivor living at the date of my death of the issue of his late Britannic Majesty King George VI or for 70 years from my death, whichever shall be the shorter."

Lady Beit's will then goes on to direct her current trustees, the Dublin solicitors Paul Guinness and Paula Fallon, not to allow a living soul access to the diaries for the period specified. She also includes a mechanism by which a new trustee can be appointed because the period that the secret must be kept is so long.

When the 'trust period' ends, the diaries of Sir Alfred Beit are then to be handed over to the National Library of Ireland.

But it is the specific clause "the last survivor living at the date of my death of the issue of his late Britannic Majesty King George VI" that fixes the contents of the diaries on the British royal family. He had two daughters, Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Margaret. As the Queen is the only direct survivor of the family, the only conclusion that can be drawn from Lady Beit's will is that the diaries have been suppressed to avoid causing her embarrassment during her lifetime.

When Sir Alfred Beit died in 1994 he left "all my remaining books, diaries, personal papers" to Lady Clementine Beit and ordered that his trustees "shall not during the lifetime of my widow interfere with the custody management or control of all or any of the items" and they were told they could not "intermeddle" with them in any way.

Sir Alfred Beit, the second baronet, was the son of the wealthy Sir Otto John Beit who was born in 1865, the younger brother of the more famous Alfred Beit.

The son of a Hamburg Jew, Alfred Beit was born in Germany in 1853 and converted to Christianity. Along with Sir Julius Wernher, he became one of the 'Randlords' who controlled South Africa's wealth and what was then Rhodesia.

Between them they created the De Beers diamond company which controls the world's diamond trade to this day. With the fortunes they made they diversified into gold mining, railroads, farms, mining and other enterprises which made them among the richest men in the world.

Alfred Beit, a friend of the British empire buccaneer Cecil Rhodes (and executor of his will), was recognised as the most brilliant of the partnership. Luton Hoo, a fabulous mansion outside London bought by Julius Wernher, became the social centre of this fabulously wealthy set.

"Lady Zia (Wernher's wife) was related to virtually every royal family in Europe, and the Wernhers were particularly close to the Mountbattens and to Prince Philip, who was a frequent guest at Luton Hoo," said Wernher's biographer.

Alfred Beit died unmarried and childless in 1909. His brother Otto John Beit inherited his fortune and was knighted in 1924. When he died in 1930 his son Alfred Beit inherited his title and his great fortune.

Sir Alfred Beit, a conservative MP, married Clementine Mabell Kitty Mitford. She was born in 1915, months after her father, who would have been the second Lord Redesdale, was killed during the First World War.

Along with her cousin Unity Mitford, the young Clementine visited Germany in the late Thirties becoming acquainted with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi hierarchy. While her cousin became a fully fledged Nazi sympathiser and admirer of Hitler, Clementine seems to have kept a certain distance.

In 1939 she married the Conservative MP Sir Alfred Beit and they lived on 'Millionaires' Row' in Kensington Palace Gardens and at various palatial addresses in South Africa.

It would seem that whatever secrets are contained in the Beit Diaries date from that golden age of the late Twenties through to the abdication of King Edward VII in 1937 over his love of American heiress, Wallis Simpson, and the elevation of King George VI to the throne.

It now appears no coincidence that following the death of the king in 1952, Sir Alfred and Lady Beit sold their London mansion and moved to Ireland. They bought Russborough to house their sumptuous art collection which consisted of some of the most valuable old masters, like Rubens, Goya and Metsu, still in private hands. But the Troubles in Northern Ireland brought their problems for the Beits. Their Palladian mansion became the target of IRA gangsters and other criminals.

Over a period of 27 years, 44 individual paintings, many of them priceless works of art, were stolen. In the six raids the Beits were roughed up by the British heiress-turned-IRA activist Rose Dugdale and they were the target of the notorious Dublin criminal Martin Cahill, known as The General, and his gang.

Several paintings were still missing at the time of Sir Alfred's death in 1994. The thieves' love of raiding Russborough reached almost farcical dimension in 2002 when two art works were recovered in Dublin and, three days later, five more pictures were stolen from the house, including a Rubens.

After the last raid, Lady Beit moved to London where she died in a nursing home in 2005. The couple had no children, and their art work is now split between the National Gallery in Dublin and Russborough House. Their property and trusts are spread between Ireland, Britain and South Africa.

The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, spent part of their honeymoon there in 1947 and returned briefly on their anniversary every year until the 1970s, when Harold Wernher died.

Luton Yesteryear. The Queen's visit to Luton in November 1955

Philip and the Queen were celebrating their eighth wedding anniversary with friends Sir Harold and Lady Zia Wernher at Luton Hoo.

The royal couple spent part of their honeymoon and several subsequent anniversaries as guests of the Wernhers at the stately home.

And it became traditional during their weekend stays to take part in a shoot on the estate and travel the short distance to St Mary’s Parish Church, Luton, to join the congregation at the Sunday morning service.

Large crowds always gathered for these occasions and our picture shows enthusiastic onlookers lining the pavements in Church Street as the Queen and Prince Philip were driven back to the Hoo after the church service in November 1955.

The first Luton Hoo wedding attended by members of the then royal family was in 1917 when diamond magnate Sir Julius Wernher’s son, Sir Harold, married Anastasia ‘Zia’ de Torby, great-granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas 1st of Russia. Lady Zia was the great-great-granddaughter of the poet Pushkin and her Russian aristocrat father, Grand Duke Michael, was related to virtually every royal family in Europe.

Luton Hoo became the setting for countless glittering balls and weekend house parties and Sir Harold and Lady Zia formed a close friendship with the British royal family. The Queen, Prince Philip and other members of the royal family, including the Queen Mother, Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, attended various Wernher family weddings.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, joined the Queen and Prince Philip at the Hoo when he celebrated his 60th birthday.

Prince Philip was godfather to Sir Harold and Lady Zia’s late grandson, Nicholas Phillips. Part of the estate was sold to Elite Hotels and Luton Hoo Hotel opened in 2008. Some of the lavish rooms where the royal couple stayed form part of the Queen Elizabeth State Suite.

Police are also expected to arrest a film director in the next few weeks.

The name of the pop star was first handed to police in 2008 when a convicted sex offender claimed he was part of a paedophile ring with Savile.

The paedo was in Whitemoor Prison, Cambs, at the time and passed a list of other child sex offenders to his probation officer. It is understood the list was handed to police but there was not enough evidence for them to act.

Now his name has come up again, he is being “actively investigated”, according to sources close to the inquiry.

I wonder what paedo they're talking about? Dennis Nilson? rapist Andrew Longmire?

Sevenoaks School settles sex abuse case out of court

Quote:
Sevenoaks School has agreed to settle out of court a claim that one of its high profile teachers, now dead, sexually abused a 12 year-old boy who was one of his pupils.

The claimant, now aged 48, was a pupil at Sevenoaks School between 1976 and 1983. He now suffers from a schizoid personality disorder with symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome.

He alleges that the teacher, Gerd Sommerhoff, befriended him and invited him to his flat in the school grounds. It was there that the abuse is said to have taken place.

The claimant eventually reported his allegations to the police in November last year, partly as a result of the publicity surrounding the Jimmy Savile scandal. Previous allegations against Sommerhoff by another pupil were made last year.

The legal case against the school has been brought by Tracey Emmott, a specialist child abuse lawyer who also represented survivors of the Jersey Haut de la Garenne scandal.

“My client has had to live with this throughout his teens and adult life,” said Tracey Emmott of Emmott Snell Solicitors.

He reported the abuse to a number of doctors over the years but no action was taken. It is a characteristic of child abuse survivors that they are left emotionally damaged and with an overwhelming sense of guilt at what took place.

“So reporting the abuse at all took some courage. In the end what gave him the impetus to bring it out into the open was the publicity surrounding the Jimmy Savile affair.
...
Sommerhoff was a distinguished teacher, inventor and philosopher and the great grandson of German composer Robert Schumann.

He fled from the Nazis to Canada in 1936, admitting that his ‘lifelong attraction to young men’ would have meant his certain imprisonment in his native country.

He was attracted to come to the UK to work at Sevenoaks School in what was considered a coup at the time.

Evidence presented in the claimant's legal proceedings against the school shows that he was particularly vulnerable to the effects of sexual and emotional abuse and felt stigmatized by his peers.

A spokesman for Sevenoaks School said: “The School can confirm that it was contacted by a former pupil about allegations of abuse said to have occurred over 30 years ago.

“Given this concerned events so long ago – and did not relate to any pupils or staff currently at the School – the matter was dealt with by the insurers from that period.”

BBC News - 7 November 2013
Anger as Catholic orphanage abuse inquiry dropped

Quote:
Former residents of a Catholic orphanage, fighting for justice over physical and sexual abuse allegations, have expressed their anger a police investigation has been closed.

In May Bedfordshire Police said it had started an inquiry into abuse at the St Francis Boys Home in Shefford in the 1950s and 1960s.

Police said they had ended the inquiry as there was no-one alive to prosecute.

Ex-resident Tony Walsh said he was "disgusted" at the development.

The BBC has talked to former residents of the home who allege they were physically and/or sexually abused at the orphanage, run by the Catholic diocese of Northampton.

In a letter to the complainants, Bedfordshire Police said officers had taken statements from 28 victims and identified a number of new suspects.

'Can't believe it'

Police said the suspects included one priest (believed to be Father John Ryan, who ran the home in the 1960s) and four nuns, who "were found to have died", and two other suspects who cannot be located.

The police letter states that "as those suspects traced have died the investigation cannot be taken any further as there are no living people to prosecute".

The letter adds: "The case will now be closed and only reopened if living suspects are traced."

It also reveals that files relating to previous investigations into abuse at the home in 2002-2003, which police said in October were "presumed destroyed", had now been located.

Gordon McIntosh, a spokesman for ex-residents who alleges he was physically abused at the home, said: "I am saddened by the decision to close the case.

"How can they close it when they haven't located all the suspects?"

He said ex-residents were still coming forward and closing the case seemed "premature".

Mr McIntosh, of Roehampton, south-west London, said ex-residents were continuing their fight for justice and a group was bringing a civil case against the Catholic Church.

Tony Walsh, 65, of Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester, who alleges he was sexually abused by Fr John Ryan and has waived his right to anonymity, said: "I can't believe they are dropping the case. It's disgusting."

He called for an independent inquiry into the case.

Bedfordshire Police said any new complaints would be investigated.

A force spokeswoman said: "Officers from the Safeguarding Unit have fully investigated each one and all offenders that could be identified and traced are now dead.

"Much like Operation Yewtree, the Savile inquiry, complainants have now felt able to contact the police where they had not done before.

"Unfortunately, as with Yewtree, the historical nature of the events means that there can be no criminal prosecution."

A spokesman for the Northamptonshire Diocese of the Catholic Church, which ran the home, has said it "deeply regrets" any hurt caused, but stressed the "claims are not proven".

Human skull inscribed with 'death to paedophiles' found on French seabed

Quote:
France has been gripped by the underwater discovery of a human skull inscribed with a target and the words "death to paedophiles" off a beautiful stretch of the Riviera coast.

First spotted by a sea urchin diver near a coastal path off Cap d'Antibes in February, a beauty spot whose rugged coastline is dotted with millionaires' homes, the bones have been identified as belonging to two women and two men.

An inquiry into "murder, sequestration, abduction and hiding corpses" was opened on Wednesday with Georges Gutierrez, the prosecutor in Grasse, saying the probe would "try to discover to whom these bones belonged and if these people were deliberately killed."

DNA tests showed that a humerus fished out of the sea belonged to Stéphane Hirson, a 17-year-old form Seine-et-Marne, near Paris, who disappeared 20 years ago without trace.

But as for the other bones, Mr Gutierrez said: "We are faced with a series of enigmas."

In particular, the police were at a loss to explain to whom the skull belonged and why it had been inscribed with the words "death to paedophiles" and a target. These had been written in permanent marker and were still clearly visible despite the skull's spell underwater.

The skull, thought to belong to a 50-year old man, was the first remain to be found by an urchin diver around 100 yards off "smugglers' path" – a stretch of coastline frequented by walkers.

After alerting the police to the precise location of his find, expert divers then carefully combed the seabed.

They brought up another three bones – including the humerus of Hirson. A jawbone was found stuck between rocks during a second dive.

"They had been in the water quite some time," said the prosecutor.

Gael Marchand, group commander of the Alpes-Maritimes gendarmes, said: "This place is no marine cemetery where bodies wash up, so this is an exceptional discovery."

Police conducted extensive searches to try and link the skull to a known paedophile, to no avail.
...
Adding to the mystery was the fact that so few bones were found. "Why was just one bone per individual and not more parts of the skeleton?," asked Mr Gutierrez. "This is just one of thousands of questions," he said.

One possible theory is that the divers had stumbled across the underwater cemetery of a serial killer.

I have been following this thread for a while, but no way have I read every message. I vaguely remember reading that the guy who started this thread Anders7777 had passed away, is this true? Did he die naturally or was it something to do with this subject?

I know that sounds a bit paranoid but being fairly new to all this stuff I can't get my head around all the "accidents" and untimely deaths.................
