How Japan Undermines Efforts to Stop the Illegal Ivory Trade
As China cracks down on ivory sales, legal loopholes in Japan—the world’s largest market—offer opportunities for smugglers.

TOKYO, JAPANLike thousands of other Tokyo visitors on a recent summer day, we beelined for Asakusa, a popular tourist district. My companion and I were drawn not by the neighborhood’s famous Buddhist temple or its renowned geisha shows but by ivory. Banned in much of the world, here in Japan ivory is still sold openly and legally.

The hunt didn’t take long. Weaving through selfie-snapping crowds, past the thunderous booms of a live drum band and the tantalizing smells of freshly baked takoyaki, we stopped at random at a shop to ask for directions. We’d heard that a particular jewelry store nearby sold Chinese-style ivory jewelry. The shopkeeper shook his head: He didn’t think that place was around anymore.

“But if it’s ivory you’re looking for,” he said, “I can help you.”

Though his shop specialized in coral, he reached into a back drawer and pulled out a necklace. The intricate, matchbox-size carving dangling from its cord depicted Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, her swirling skirts surrounded by a dragon’s tight coils and a spray of phoenix feathers.

Under the auspices of Tory Michael Gove, 100,000 of UK's Badgers are to be culled, 75,000 by the end of this year at an estimated cost of £1,000 per badger. About 35,000 badgers have already been culled since 2013. The badger is already on the list of endangered species (hardly surprising) Secret camera footage of badger caging and shooting here:

http://www.theguardian.com/environme...f-badger-culls

Farmers argue 3,800 farms affected by TB resulting in the extermination of 33,000 affected cattle, while environmentalists claim TB can be contracted from anywhere and Badgers can be innoculated at a fraction of the cost.

Furthermore, mass extermination of badgers could also culminate in a correlating imbalance in the ecosystem infrastructure, with a boom in the numbers of foxes, weasels and stoats all equal potential carriers of TB.

Decriminalise drugs, Plaid Cymru says

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-45757969

Illegal drugs should be decriminalised, delegates at the Plaid Cymru conference have said.
Party members called the war on drugs an "unmitigated failure" and said criminalising those with an addiction does "nothing to help them turn their lives around".
Activists voted for decriminalisation to become party policy on Friday.
The party has four MPs in Westminster, where drugs policy for England and Wales is controlled.
Portugal decriminalised drugs in 2001.

Vegan BBQ Spot Opens In Nashville!

http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-...0651-106581093

Nashville, Tennessee is known for their classic BBQ staples, but that can leave those who adhere to a plant-based diet out when visiting the South. Thankfully, a new restaurant has opened up in the heart of the city that will be serving up all your favorite Southern comfort foods, but with a plant-based twist! The Southern V, owned by husband and wife duo Tiffany and Clifton Hancock, will be a haven for vegan diners who wish to embrace the comfort and richness of Southern cooking.

Clifton grew up on a diet of meat and potatoes, as did the rest of his family, but his dietary preferences altered after the birth of his first child. Tiffany and Clifton’s firstborn had some dietary intolerances growing up, especially dairy, so they knew they needed to make some adjustments to their recipes.

This slowly led to the development of Southern comfort-style food done vegan. Clifton and Tiffany began selling their food at local farmer’s markets which quickly became a huge success! Eventually they were able to open a storefront.

This Dog Meat Farmer Is Converting His Operation to a Medicinal Herb Farm and Setting All His Animals Free!

http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/d...6087-106581093

We recently brought you the news that Humane Society International, with a £25,000 donation from Simon Cowell, was set on rescuing more than 200 dogs from a dog meat farm in South Korea. Well, we have a great update for you!

Farmer Lee, a 71-year-old dog meat farmer from Gyeonggi-do, has raised dogs for slaughter for 14 years. Though thanks to a pioneering program by Humane Society International, he is now closing the dog farm down with the intention of expanding his medicinal herb farm in its place.

Lee is the thirteenth dog meat farmer to begin working with the charity, which is incredible news.

LEGAL WEED USE BY CANADIAN SOLDIERS WON'T HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT, GENERAL TELLS ALLIES
BY JASON LEMON ON 9/12/18 AT 11:20 AM

Canada’s military has reassured allies that personnel consuming cannabis after recreational use becomes legal in October won’t negatively impact troops operational capabilities, a top general has said.

The Canadian Armed Forces chief of personnel, Lieutenant-General Charles Lamarre, explained that he laid out the military’s new policy regarding cannabis to the country’s closest security partners—the U.S., Britain, Australia and New Zealand—also known as the "Five Eyes" allies. He said that they were curious about how the Canadian military would address nationwide legalization.

“They can see the operational impact is nil, if you will,” Lamarre said, The Globe and Mail reported on Tuesday. “We have had absolutely no negative comments come back on this thing.”
