Taipei - Earthquakes have struck off Taiwan and the Solomon Islands, but seismologists ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Taiwan on Saturday, the island's Seismology Centre said, but there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

The tremor, which was also felt in the capital Taipei in the north, struck at 11:39 (03:39 GMT), 46.9km southeast of Hualien on the east coast, at a depth of 16.9km under the sea, the centre said.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

In September 1999, a 7.6-magnitude tremor killed around 2 400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's recent history.

A 6.6-magnitude quake also hit off the Solomon Islands on Saturday, Australian seismologists said, but there were no reports of damage and a tsunami threat was also ruled out.

Tsunami

The quake struck near the Santa Cruz islands about 623km from the capital Honiara and was followed by a series of smaller aftershocks, according to Geoscience Australia.

The US Geological Survey initially measured the quake at 6.7-magnitude but later revised it down to 6.3 at a depth of 19km.

"We've got it at 6.6," Geoscience Australia seismologist Jonathan Bathgate said, adding that the quake was "very unlikely" to have generated a tsunami.

A separate bulletin from the the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also ruled out the threat of a Pacific-wide destructive tsunami.

The Solomon Islands are part of the "Ring of Fire", a zone of tectonic activity around the Pacific Ocean that is subject to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

In 2007 a tsunami following an 8.1-magnitude earthquake killed at least 52 people in the Solomons and left thousands homeless.

Bathgate said the latest tremors follow two 6.1-magnitude quakes and one 6.4-magnitude in the same area over the past few days.

"There's been four quakes over six (magnitude) in the last three days in that area. It doesn't necessarily indicate that there's anything bigger to come. There could be some more to come or there could be nothing. We just don't know."

Earth reeling from nine major earthquakes, striking in 5 days

Posted on February 2, 2013

February 2, 2013 – EARTH – An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands (Santa Cruz) in the Pacific Ocean, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Friday. The quake was later downgraded by the USGS to a 6.3 magnitude event. The depth of the quake was 10 km (6.2 miles) and the epicenter was 68 km southwest of Lata. The quake hit at 9:16 a.m. local time on Saturday. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not immediately issue any alerts on its website. This quake was underscored by an even stronger 6.9 magnitude earthquake that just struck the Hokkaido region of East Japan on February 2nd. This is the ninth major earthquake to strike the planet in the last five days. The present cluster of earthquakes began with a 6.0 event in Eastern Kazakhstan on January 28th, following a full moon on January 27, 2013.

Perhaps, it may not be readily apparent to most that our planet appears to now be inching towards the spectrum of some major cataclysmic event. This approaching black swan occurrence is characterized by the gradual escalation of geological activity of a violent seismic and volcanic nature. 44 volcanic eruptive events have already been recorded for the month of January; where there was only 77 chronicled for the entire year of 2012. The on-going volcanic activity in Kamchatka also provides compelling testament that massive changes are now taking place within the planet’s interior.

No less than 4 volcanoes on the Far Eastern peninsula of Kamchatka are erupting simultaneous, though all the volcanoes lie in relative close proximity to each other (with a 110 km radius). Even more interesting, the magma flow fueling each volcanic system appears to emanting from a separate magma source. However, what’s even more disconcerting is the fact that Plosky Tolbachik volcano awakened from 40 years of dormancy and is now ejecting massive rivers of lava across the landscape of Kamchatka.

Russian scientists attest this is the first time rivers of lava have ever flowed from one of the Kamchatka volcanoes during the Holocene period. Large-scale protracted effusive eruptions, such as these, are generally fueled by a deep magma source. Most originate from a magma plume from deep inside the planet’s crust. Both of the planet’s volcanoes, which have had large effusive eruptions in the past, Kileaua (Hawaii) and Mount Etna (Italy) both lie over magma plumes- Kamchatka’s Plosky Tolbchik volcano does not. Kamchatka peninsula, which has a total land mass that is slightly larger than Germany, is one of the most active parts of the infamous “Ring of Fire,” the zone of volcanic and seismic activity that encircles the Pacific Ocean. Three tectonic plates — the North American Plate, the Okhotsk Plate, and the Pacific Plate — collide beneath Kamchatka, with the peninsula’s coastal range boasting 30 active volcanoes. The crust is thinning here, and is becoming more fractured, as seismic stresses increase.

Ominous change in the South Pacific: The Santa Cruz seismic swarms are unfolding against an even more complex geological backdrop. Consequently, the effects of this massive seismic upheaval signals ominous change for the entire Pacific basin. To the west, the Indo-Australian plate is breaking up, after the largest strike-slip earthquakes ever recorded, struck off the coast of Indonesia in April of 2012.

The Solomon Sea Plate, to the east, is an oceanic crustal plate remnant, which is disappearing into two subduction zones, one to its north, the other on its southwest margin. Its southeast margin runs along the Woodlark Rise, undefined compressive zone, which may be a transform fault marking the boundary with the adjoining Woodlark Plate. The northern subduction zone is located where the Solomon Plate is diving below the South Bismarck Plate to the northwest and the Pacific Plate to the northeast. The northwest part of the subduction zone is called the New Britain Subduction Zone. New Britain in Papua New Guinea is the volcanic island formed from this collision and resulting volcanism. The southwestern subduction zone is where the Solomon Plate is diving below the Indo-Australian Plate. According to scientists, the Indo-Australian plate may in the process of breaking up, and this heightened activity around the Santa Cruz Islands is placing additional pressures on a tectonic plate, already exhibiting strains of fracturing.

We should continue to watch the region of Indonesia for massive changes to come, including very large-scale volcanic eruptions. Nearly all of the planet’s current 15 tectonic plates, and in some cases, sub-plates and volcanic arcs are heavily stressed by the recent violent mobility of tectonic plates shaken by earthquakes. I’ve never quite seen a pattern this fraught with potential hazards or as heavily laden with seismic tension. The planet is now experiencing a major geological crisis, and it’s showing some indication of worsening. –The Extinction Protocol

Your opinion don't count because you said we would be short over 1 billion people by now because Web Bot told you so

While I agree we have had an uptick in earthquakes over the past few days, its happened in the past to, and no plate came unglued as of yet. Now when you have days of 8.0 to 9.0 happening in the same area I will be at the front of the line telling everyone some major shits going on.

I do believe the uptick in volcanoes and quakes could very well have been due to the past full moon, but we have full moons every 29 days and nothing happens on them most of the time. I have been watching the Volcanoes in Kamchatka I do think this needs to be watched more because out of all the shit going on in the world today this one strikes me as being the oddest or out of place events, well maybe not that odd there are over 100 volcanoes there and they do go boom every now and then. OH almost forgot keep in mind at this time of year this Island is to be a frozen wasteland and its not, not sure if that will impact anything or not.

I am kind of shocked Mr. Spellbound that you have not come out and said the Kamchatka is the making of a Super Volcano and we are all going to die

All the tale tale signs of a crustal displacement... The strange thing a comet coming in on a 11000 year path...

Discovered on March 23rd 2012 by the Mount Lemmon survey in Arizona, Comet Lemmon is on an elliptical orbit with a period of almost 11,000 years. This is its first visit to the inner solar system in a very long time. The comet is brightening as it approaches the sun; light curves suggest that it will reach 2nd or 3rd magnitude, similar to the stars in the Big Dipper, in late March when it approaches the sun at about the same distance as Venus (0.7 AU).

It has been suggested that approximately 12,000 years ago there was a displacement of the Earth's crust. The entire outer shell of the earth moved approximately 2,000 miles. When the Earth's crust shifted all of Antarctica was encapsulated by the polar zone. At the same time North American was released from the Arctic Circle and became temperate. This is based on the theory of Continental Drift - Earth's continents slowly drifting apart over millions of years. This is possible because the outer crust of the Earth floats upon a semi-liquid layer.

U.S. Geological Survey: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 struck off the Solomon Islands in the Pacific.

(CNN) -- An 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands in the Southwest Pacific early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, sparking a tsunami warning.
The center of the quake was located some 360 miles east-southeast of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, the USGS said. It was reported to be 3.6 miles deep.
A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna, according to the the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

A tsunami watch was in effect for more places: the Marshall Islands, Howland and Baker, Pohnpei, Tokelau, Samoa, Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, American Samoa, Tonga, Australia, Niue, Cook Islands, Indonesia, Wake Island, Chuuk, Jarvis Island, Guam, Northern Marianas, Palmyra Island, Yap, Johnston Island, Minamitorishima and Belau. Nathan Becker, with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, told CNN that conditions are right for the making of a tsunami. However, authorities are waiting to see if a wave passes their instruments, and it might be an hour before they know more, he said. There is no evidence of a wave at the moment and no reason to expand the alert, Becker said.

Quake off Solomon Islands triggers tsunami

A small tsunami hit the eastern Solomon Islands after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake that triggered tsunami warnings for several Pacific nations.

The quake struck at 01:12 GMT near the Santa Cruz islands, part of the Solomon Islands nation, the US Geological Survey said.

A tsunami measuring 0.9m (3ft) subsequently hit Lata in the far eastern Solomons.

The centre said the tsunami could be destructive near the epicentre.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated," the Hawaii-based centre said.

"It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts."

The director at Lata Hospital on the main Santa Cruz island of Ndende said it was believed villages had been destroyed by the quake.

"The information we are getting is that some villages west and south of Lata along the coast have been destroyed, although we cannot confirm this yet,’’ the director said.

The tsunami would have hit nearby islands "within a matter of minutes", said Rick Bailey, head of tsunami warning services at Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology.
