Unlikely that the water injection activity at PGV site was the primary initiator of the current major magma movements but one could argue that pumping water over a 30 year period into a complex fractured zone with some cavities and with still hot 1955 vintage magma close to the surface has contributed to the way that the surface activity in the East rift zone has developed.

Lava flow speed from fissure 8 has increased to 17 mph and runs red hot all the way to the coast.

I admit having some weeks ago read a Youtube comment stating it was like injecting cold water into a pressure-cooker, but it had also been my first thought after learning that the geothermal plant had been drilling wells by fracking for decades.

The steam spewed by the volcano added to the one created by the lava flow in the ocean is now half-word held responsible for the climatic events of these last weeks, as a means to say that water must returns to water either way. They still got left to incriminate water injections right above the magma chamber.

I doubt a volcano’s magma chamber is supposed to stay under pressure, and one of the best ways to achieve it would then be to inject enough water to flood or ‘choke’ it until it explodes.
Seems to be a proven possible result of fracking...

Quote:
Study: South Korea’s largest earthquake was likely triggered by geothermal fracking

Two separate studies have suggested that hydraulic fracking is the likeliest cause behind South Korea’s worst earthquake. An Eco Watch article shared the studies’ findings linking a fracking operation for a local geothermal power plant to the 2017 Pohang earthquake.

In November 15 of that year, a massive earthquake struck the southern port of Pohang. It was the second biggest quake ever experienced in South Korea, being tied with the earlier one that hit Gyeongju province in 2016.

It was also the most destructive. The quake ruined much of Pohang, caused dozens of injuries, and destroyed the homes of 1,500 families.

Hydraulic fracking is a process where a high-pressure fluid is injected deep underground. The liquid causes rock to fracture so that other liquids can pass through the broken rock with greater ease.

Fracking is used not just for freeing deep pockets of oil and natural gas for exploitation by the petroleum industry. It is also used to improve the circulation of heat in geothermal power systems. (Related: Evidence that the Geothermal Plant in Hawaii secretly uses fracking techniques to induce earthquakes; And what about the Hilina Slump?)

I simply got my quote from Wiki where it's meant that the main cause of eruption is the presence of steam or water in the magma chamber, both boiling down to about the same.

But I've been also thinking that the chamber might have to 'breath' through the crust, and that by dint of molding the subsoil by injecting too much water you might end up clogging the breathing vents, then putting the chamber under high pressure. The earthquake-related explanation sure sounds more evident.

The Hawaian elders haven't given fissure 8 a name yet which is probably very wise.

Ah thanks… my computer not that old yet not quite up to date…

OK then it’s a phreatic eruption and fact is you never saw ash covering the landscape around, so was the water standing under the magma chamber ? Did earthquakes pump it up from the ocean ? Or was it injected underground from the volcano’s surface ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJZhM_7CkpA

Is there even a phreatic zone on a volcanic island like Hawai and right beneath the Kilauea ?

Again where does the water come from ?

I think 'volcanic monsoon' is more appropriate.

Fuego volcano erupted last June the 3d in Guatemala…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA5VQ9rL0eE

It’s located close to Zunil where you find another geothermal plant exploited by the same Ormat company as Puna in Hawai…

https://openei.org/wiki/Zunil_Geothermal_Power_Plant

Quote:
“This is one of the most unstable pieces of land on the entire planet, and they knew that,” said Robert Petricci, president of the Puna Pono Alliance watchdog group, who lives near the plant. “They built it anyway to make money.”

Quote:
Ormat Technologies, a geothermal company, has been producing electrical power on Hawaii’s Big Island since 1989. In 2005, the company decided to drill a deep injection well at its site, Puna, located on the eastern part of the island. But about 2.5 kilometers down, the drill suddenly dropped straight through solid rock into molten magma.

That they might drill into magma isn’t particularly surprising, said William Teplow, a consulting geologist for Ormat, at a press conference Tuesday. The Big Island is dominated by active volcanoes, including Kilauea, which has been actively erupting along its eastern rift zone for more than 25 years.

Fissure 8 has slowed down....is this Pele pausing for breath before another belch or the beginning of the end of the eruption?

Well it's going to change speed occasionally but theory indicates there's a good connection between the East Rift Zone and the main magma chamber to the West with several years worth of lava on tap. In practise who knows but here's the latest update.

Fissure 8 eruption is the largest by volume in 300 years on the island by quite a large margin now.

Steve Brantley explains why the flow is varying noticeably from fissure 8.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVeK37_c0zQ

Possibly a faster flow on display between 8m 30s to 13m 30s in this USGS video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au9yLUv8o04

Whilst the seaward end of the flow is becoming unpredictable with overflows North (caused partly by blocking activity of detached levee blocks) North East and South West of the previous entry area that threatens the remaining untouched properties there.

After months of dramatic and record setting flow rates lava flow from fissure 8 dramatically eased overnight.
