Arrow Brain Salad Surgery

Quote:
The Barber surgeon was one of the most common medical practitioners of medieval Europe – generally charged with looking after soldiers during or after a battle. In this era, surgery was not generally conducted by physicians, but by barbers. In the Middle Ages in Europe barbers would be expected to do anything from cutting hair to amputating limbs. Mortality of surgery at the time was quite high due to loss of blood and infection. Doctors of the Middle Ages thought that taking blood would help cure the patient of sickness so the barber would apply leeches to the patient. Physicians tended to be academics, working in universities, and mostly dealt with patients as an observer or a consultant. They considered surgery to be beneath them..They often took up residence in castles where they also provided medical assistance to the wealthy..Due to religious and sanitary monastic regulations, monks had to maintain their tonsure (the traditional baldness on the top of the head of Catholic monks), and be bled regularly. This created a market for barbers, because each monastery had to either train or hire a barber. These barbers would perform bloodletting and other minor surgeries like pulling teeth or creating ointments. The first barber-surgeons to be recognized as such worked in monasteries around 1000 A.D..

Quote:
The correct way to address a member or fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons is to use the title Mr, Miss, Mrs, or Ms (not Dr).. This system (which applies only to surgeons, not physicians) has its origins in the 16th century, when surgeons were barber-surgeons and did not have a medical degree (or indeed any formal qualification), unlike physicians, who held a University medical degree..When the College of Surgeons received its royal charter, the Royal College of Physicians insisted that candidates must have a medical degree first.. Therefore an aspiring surgeon had to study medicine first and received the title Doctor. Thereafter, having obtained the diploma of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons he would revert to the title "Mr" as a snub to the RCP. Nowadays the title "Mr" is used by Members of the College who have passed the diploma MRCS examination and the College addresses Members as "Mr" cenobite is a word meaning "a member of a communal religious order"; The Hellbound Heart specifies that they are members of The Order of the Gash.. The text also refers to them as Hierophants..

Lightbulb DR ShipMan

Quote:
Harold Frederick Shipman (14 January 1946 – 13 January 2004) was a British doctor and one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history by proven murders with up to 250 murders being ascribed to him.."Clean Skin" is the third episode of the first season of the psychological thriller TV series Homeland.. It originally aired on Showtime on October 16, 2011....

In March 1998, Dr Linda Reynolds of the Brooke Surgery in Hyde, prompted by Deborah Massey from Frank Massey and Son's funeral parlour, expressed concerns to John Pollard, the coroner for the South Manchester District, about the high death rate among Shipman's patients. In particular, she was concerned about the large number of cremation forms for elderly women that he had needed countersigned. The matter was brought to the attention of the police, who were unable to find sufficient evidence to bring charges; The Shipman Inquiry later blamed the police for assigning inexperienced officers to the case. Between 17 April 1998, when the police abandoned the investigation, and Shipman's eventual arrest, he killed three more people. His last victim was Kathleen Grundy, a former Mayor of Hyde, who was found dead at her home on 24 June 1998. Shipman was the last person to see her alive, and later signed her death certificate, recording "old age" as the cause of death..Grundy's daughter, lawyer Angela Woodruff, became concerned when solicitor Brian Burgess informed her that a will had been made, apparently by her mother.. There were doubts about its authenticity. The will excluded her and her children, but left £386,000 to Shipman. Burgess told Woodruff to report it, and went to the police, who began an investigation. Grundy's body was exhumed, and when examined was found to contain traces of diamorphine (heroin), often used for pain control in terminal cancer patients.. Shipman was arrested on 7 September 1998, and was found to own a typewriter of the type used to make the forged will..The police then investigated other deaths Shipman had certified, and created a list of 15 specimen cases to investigate. They discovered a pattern of his administering lethal doses of diamorphine, signing patients' death certificates, and then falsifying medical records to indicate that they had been in poor health...

Despite the prosecutions of Dr John Bodkin Adams in 1957, Dr Leonard Arthur in 1981, and Dr Thomas Lodwig in 1990 (amongst others), Shipman is the only doctor in British legal history to be found guilty of killing patients..According to historian Pamela Cullen, Adams had also been a serial killer—potentially killing up to 165 of his patients between 1946 and 1956, but as he "was found not guilty, there was no impetus to examine the flaws in the system until the Shipman case. Had these issues been addressed earlier, it might have been more difficult for Shipman to commit his crimes".. H. G. Kinnell, writing in the British Medical Journal, also speculates that Adams "possibly provided the role model for Shipman"..

Harold Shipman committed suicide by hanging in his cell at Wakefield Prison at 06:20 on 13 January 2004, on the eve of his 58th birthday, and was pronounced dead at 08:10. A Prison Service statement indicated that Shipman had hanged himself from the window bars of his cell using bed sheets.. Some British tabloids expressed joy at his suicide and encouraged other serial killers to follow his example; The Sun ran a celebratory front page headline,
"Ship Ship hooray!"...

Lightbulb Misery

Quote:
Paul Sheldon, the author of a best-selling series of Victorian-era romance novels surrounding the heroine character Misery Chastain, has just finished the manuscript of his new crime novel, Fast Cars, while staying at the Hotel Boulderado; since 1974, he has completed the first draft of every one of his novels in the same hotel room. With his latest project finished, he has an alcohol-induced impulse to drive to Los Angeles rather than fly back home to New York City. However, a snowstorm hits while he is driving through the mountains. Sheldon drives off a cliff and crashes upside down into a snowbank..

Paul is rescued from the car wreck by Annie Wilkes, a former nurse who lives in nearby Sidewinder.. She takes him to her own home rather than a hospital, putting him in the guest bedroom. Using her nursing skills and stockpiled food and medical supplies, including an illicit stash of codeine-based painkillers, Annie slowly nurses Paul back to health. She proclaims herself as Paul's "number 1 fan," being an avid reader of the Misery Chastain series. However, when she reads the manuscript for Fast Cars, Annie argues with Paul on its violent content and profanity, causing her to spill his soup.. Saying that the accident was "his" fault, she punishes him by withholding his medication, then forcing him to wash it down with soap water. Paul, who has done extensive research into mental disorders, suspects that Annie is dangerously disturbed..Misery is a commune in the Somme department..Picardy is
one of the 27 regions of France...

Sid Carter is the cunning head of a criminal gang that includes the longhaired drip Ernie Bragg , the cheeky Freddy and Sid's son, Cyril .. Cyril disguises himself as a new nurse to case a maternity hospital and the booty – the hospital's stock of contraceptive pills. The "Head Chopper" at the hospital, Sir Bernard Cutting, is convinced he's undergoing a sex change while the nutty Dr F.A. Goode dishes out psychiatric mumbo jumbo..The hard working Matron (Hattie Jacques) has more than enough to contend with on the wards, with the troublesome Mrs Tidey who seems more interested in eating than producing a baby and her loyal British Rail worker husband who continually hangs around the waiting room. Waiting. Cyril is picked out by notorious "bird-watcher" Dr Prodd and goes back to his place to get a map of the hospital. The poor doc gets a shock when the Lovely "nurse" turns out to be a crook in a frock...

Quote:
The M17 Protective Mask is a series of gas masks that were designed and produced in 1959 (as a replacement of the M-9 gas mask) to provide protection from all types of known chemical and biological agents present. The M-17 was issued to troops in the Vietnam war, and was standard issue for the U.S Army until it was replaced by the M-40 in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The mask has different components including a filter, a face piece and outserts.. Filter elements in the face piece prevent harmful agents from entering the mask.. The M17 series includes three types of masks, the M17, M17A1 and M17A2. An experimental transparent-silicone model was designed in 1966, but was turned down. Many countries have copied the M-17 design..Notable copies include the Bulgarian PDE-1, the Polish Mp-4, the East German M10M and the Czech M-10..The mask offers protection from harmful agents, but does not function properly in places where oxygen content is low.. The mask is not meant to be used for firefighting and does not provide protection from radiation. It is recommended that users continue wearing it until the biological or chemical agent is identified and cleared from the contaminated area..The M-17 series protective masks were phased out in the 1990s,replaced by the M40 Field Protective Mask..

The sulfur mustards, or sulphur mustards, commonly known as mustard gas, are a class of related cytotoxic and vesicant chemical warfare agents with the ability to form large blisters on the exposed skin and in the lungs. Pure sulfur mustards are colorless, viscous liquids at room temperature. When used in impure form, such as warfare agents, they are usually yellow-brown in color and have an odour resembling mustard plants, garlic, or horseradish, hence the name. Mustard gas was originally assigned the name LOST, after the scientists Wilhelm Lommel and Wilhelm Steinkopf, who developed a method for the large-scale production of mustard gas for the Imperial German Army in 1916..Mustard agents are regulated under the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC)..3 classes of chemicals are monitored under this Convention, with sulfur and nitrogen mustard grouped in Schedule 1, as substances with no use other than in chemical warfare.. Mustard agents could be deployed on the battlefield by means of artillery shells, aerial bombs, rockets,Vehiculls or by spraying from warplanes.. Mustard gas has extremely powerful vesicant effects on its victims. In addition, it is strongly mutagenic and carcinogenic, due to its alkylating properties. It is also lipophilic. Because people exposed to mustard gas rarely suffer immediate symptoms, and mustard-contaminated areas may appear completely normal, victims can unknowingly receive high dosages..Mustard gas vapour easily penetrates clothing fabrics such as wool or cotton, so it is not only the exposed skin of victims that gets burned. If the victim's eyes were exposed then they become sore, starting with conjunctivitis, after which the eyelids swell, resulting in temporary blindness..A British nurse treating soldiers with mustard gas burns during World War I commented..They cannot be bandaged or touched. We cover them with a tent of propped-up sheets. Gas burns must be agonizing because usually the other cases do not complain, even with the worst wounds, but gas cases are invariably beyond endurance and they cannot help crying out..The Bushmaster M17S is a semi-automatic bullpup rifle that was manufactured by Bushmaster Firearms International from 1992 until 2005..The design of the M17S dates back to 1986 when the Australian company Armtech Ltd. developed the prototype as a prospective military rifle for the Australian Army...

Arrow G Van

Quote:
During trips to Russia in 1941, Heinrich Himmler learned the psychological impact of shooting women and children on the Einsatzgruppen.. Hence, he commissioned Arthur Nebe to explore ways of killing that were less stressful for the task forces. Nebe's experiments eventually led to the utilization of the gas van..The gas van or gas wagon (Russian: душегубка (dushegubka); German: Gaswagen) was a vehicle reequipped as a mobile gas chamber.. The vehicle had an air-tight compartment for victims, into which exhaust fumes were transmitted while the engine was running.. The victims were gassed with carbon monoxide, resulting in death by monoxide poisoning and suffocation. The gas van was invented and used by the Soviet secret police NKVD in the late 1930s during the Great Purge.. It was later widely implemented as an extermination method in Nazi Germany to kill enemies of the regime, mostly Jews..

The gas van was invented in the Soviet Union in 1936, by Isay Berg, the head of the administrative and economic department of the NKVD of Moscow Oblast which suffocated batches of prisoners with engine fumes in a camouflaged bread van while on the drive out to the mass graves at Butovo, where the prisoners were subsequently buried. According to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, "I. D. Berg was ordered to carry out the decisions of the NKVD troika of Moscow Oblast, and Berg was decently carrying out this assignment: he was driving people to the executions by shooting.. But, when in Moscow O blast there came to be 3 troikas having their sessions simultaneously, the executioners could not cope with the load. They hit upon a solution: to strip the victims naked, to tie them up, plug their mouths and throw them into a closed truck, disguised from the outside as a bread van. During transportation the fuel gases came into the truck, and when delivered to the farthest [execution] ditch the arrestees were already dead.."
Berg denied that he was inventor of the gas van...

Arrow Hammer & Sickle

Quote:
The hammer and sickle are a traditional symbol of the working class representing urban industry and rural agriculture, e.g. in the Coat of arms of Austria.. A symbol featuring a hammer and a sickle, overlapping each other (☭) in order to symbolize the unity, has become a part of communist symbolism. Its usage indicates an association with communism, a communist party, or a socialist state.. This emblem was conceived during the Russian Revolution. Many flags and emblems have since incorporated the symbol, with some including additional locally-relevant symbolism..The terms "sickle cell crisis" or "sickling crisis" may be used to describe several independent acute conditions occurring in patients with sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease results in anemia and crises that could be of many types including the vaso-occlusive crisis, aplastic crisis, sequestration crisis, haemolytic crisis and others. Most episodes of sickle cell crises last between 5 and se7en days.. "Although infection, dehydration, and acidosis (all of which favor sickling) can act as triggers, in most instances no predisposing cause is identified..The highest frequency of sickle cell disease is found in tropical regions, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, India and the Middle-East..A clandestine cell structure is a method for organizing a group of people in such a way that it can more effectively resist penetration by an opposing organization.. Depending on the group's philosophy, its operational area, the communications technologies available, and the nature of the mission, it can range from a strict hierarchy to an extremely distributed organization.. It is also a method used by criminal organizations, undercover operatives, and unconventional warfare (UW) led by special forces.. Historically, clandestine organizations have avoided electronic communications, because signals intelligence is a strength of conventional militaries and counterintelligence organizations..A sleeper cell refers to a cell, or isolated grouping of sleeper agents that lies dormant until it receives orders or decides to act...

Sickle was bred by Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby..The RT-2PM Topol (Russian: РТ-2ПМ Тополь ("Poplar"); NATO reporting name SS-25 Sickle; GRAU designation: 15Ж58 ("15Zh58"); other designations: RS-12M Topol) is a mobile intercontinental ballistic missile designed in the Soviet Union and in service with Russia's Strategic Missile Troops..The 3 stage solid propellant RT-2PM Topol is an improved mobile ICBM which replaced earlier outdated missile complexes.. It emerged from the same line of development as mobile missiles such as the RT-21 Temp 2S and the RSD-10 Pioneer, and was deployed as a replacement for the widely deployed UR-100.. The United States considered developing their own road-mobile ICBM called the Midgetman, but the program was canceled with the end of the Cold War..Sickles is an unincorporated community in Caddo County, Oklahoma, United States..

MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, the original novel that inspired the Movie MASH and TV series M*A*S*H, was written by "Richard Hooker" (the pen name for Dr. H. Richard Hornberger and writer W. C. Heinz), the former having worked as a military surgeon, and was about a fictional U.S. Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Korea during the Korean War. It was originally published in 1968...Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake, commander of the MASH unit 4077, requests two new surgeons for his unit. Captains Duke Forrest and Hawkeye Pierce share a jeep to the post, discovering that they share a taste for alcohol and similar views about many issues. Blake assigns them to the night shift, billeting them with Major Jonathan Hobson, a Midwestern preacher and surgeon..Despite their dislike of authority and penchant for making wisecracks and pulling pranks, the new doctors exhibit exceptional surgical skills and commitment to their job, gaining the respect of their colleagues. They become annoyed by Maj. Hobson's religious fervor and insist that Blake have Maj. Hobson rebilleted. Friction mounts between the major and the new captains; when Major Hobson's prayers begin to annoy everyone, Col. Blake arranges to have him sent stateside..Pierce and Forrest also request a chest surgeon for the unit.. When the new man, Captain John McIntyre, arrives, he displays exceptional skill, but resists their attempts to draw him into their social Circle..During a recreational football game, Hawkeye suddenly remembers playing football against McIntyre in college and introduces McIntyre to everyone as Trapper John..The Bachelor Officers Quarters (BOQ) tent occupied by the three surgeons, known as The Swamp, becomes a central gathering point. The surgeons enjoy the company of Father Mulcahy, the Catholic chaplain, although they are not strongly religious, but Duke (an avowed Protestant), wants to seek out a Protestant chaplain. A chaplain is found, but the "Swampmen" object to his habit of ghostwriting cheerful letters for soldiers without checking the seriousness of their wounds. After a patient dies the day after a letter saying "Everything is fine and I'll be home soon", the Swampmen lash him to a wooden cross and make him believe they intend to burn him alive..Captain Waldowski is prone to regular fits of depression. When he announces his decision to commit suicide, the Swampmen stage a "Last Supper", summon everyone to bid him farewell and then give him a sedative. While he is sedated, they hook him to a harness and drop him from a helicopter, ending the depression..The Swampmen have frequent conflicts with Captain Frank Burns. Burns, even though he has never had surgical training, nonetheless considers his work infallible, and holds himself above the Swampmen. After one of his patients dies, he angrily blames an orderly. First Duke and then Trapper get Into a fistfight with Burns...

The Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) refers to a United States Army medical unit serving as a fully functional hospital in a combat area of operations. The units were first established in August 1945, and were deployed during the Korean War and later conflicts. The U.S. Army deactivated the last MASH unit on February 16, 2006. The successor to the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital is the Combat Support Hospital..MASH units continued to serve in various conflicts including the Vietnam War..During the Gulf War, in October 1990 the 5th MASH, 44th Medical Brigade, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, deployed to Saudi Arabia and was the first fully functional Army Hospital in country..This unit moved forward six times, always as the first up hospital for the region.. In March 1991 the 5th MASH was operationally attached to the 24th Infantry Division to provide forward surgical care (often right on the front battle lines) to the combat units that attacked the western flank of Iraqi Army. In March 1991, the 159th MASH of the Louisiana Army National Guard operated in Iraq in support of the 3rd Armored Division during Operation Desert Storm...

Welcome to the soldiers off the street web site, we are a Registered Charity No. 1137594. We have been Registered since 26 August 2010 with a dedicated group of people determined to help the forgotten ex service personnel whose lives have been affected by homelessness. We all think they deserve better after going through the traumatic experience of war in far off lands, what they have been through for the country they love, to be forgotten and homelessness is a national disgrace. That we intend to put right for as many as we can!.Although the charity in called Soldiers off the Street we do not deal with just soldiers we help all ex-service personnel Army, RAF and RN past and present not just present conflict..The charity's objects (the Objects) are the relief of charitable need of homeless ex-service personnel, in particular but not exclusively by the provision of clothing, food and rehabilitation, including advice on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, alcoholism, drug abuse and housing...The question we should all ask ourselves; how many of these young men and women that can hold their heads up high with pride, with us sharing their pride with them, will end up homeless on the streets where most people would not even give them the time of day...

An ex-soldier who risked her life detecting explosives in Afghanistan has been left homeless..Private Lauren Dobbs, 23, who was a military dog handler, has been denied council housing, despite David Cameron's pledge to give higher housing priority to former armed forces personnel..Instead she was offered a bed at a night shelter - but only if the temperature falls below freezing...Private Dobbs spent six years in the Army, and was a military dog handler in the Vet Corps - a job involving handling specialist dogs capable of detecting arms and explosives..Six months after leaving the armed forces she claims her plans for a new independent life are being scuppered by the failure of Bromley Council, in Kent, to find her a new home..Fortunately Ms Dobbs, who is currently studying to be a personal trainer, has been able to stay with her mother, but she has been angered by the council's failure to look after her..Her mother, Michelle Lynn, 47, of Biggin Hill, said: 'My daughter's friends have had their limbs blown off, they have been killed and this is all the council can do.

'It is not good enough..

My daughter was fighting for her country.

'It is disgraceful that they treat someone who fights for their country like this.

'When soldiers leave the army they cannot afford a mortgage, their wages are atrocious -
what are they supposed to do?'...

Lets face it none of you would get to work or university but for oil and the wars that are fought for it...Out of sight out of mind eh peeps...

Homelessness is the condition of people without a regular dwelling. People who are homeless are most often unable to acquire and maintain regular, safe, secure, and adequate housing, or lack "fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence".. The legal definition of "homeless" varies from country to country, or among different entities or institutions in the same country or region.. The term homeless may also include people whose primary night-time residence is in a homeless shelter, a warming center, a domestic violence shelter, a vehicle (including recreational vehicles and campers), cardboard boxes, a tent, tarpaulins, or other ad hoc housing situations. American Government homeless enumeration studies also include persons who sleep in a public or private place not designed for use as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.. There are a number of organisations who provide provisions for the homeless for example, The Salvation Army.

An estimated 100 million people worldwide were homeless in 2005.. In western countries, the large majority of homeless are men (75–80%), with single males particularly overrepresented..In the USA, LGBT people are over-represented among homeless youth, at 39%.. Modern homelessness started as a result of economic stresses in society and reductions in the availability of affordable housing. In the United States, in the 1970s, the deinstitutionalisation of patients from state psychiatric hospitals was a precipitating factor in urban areas. By the mid-1980s, there was also a dramatic increase in family homelessness. Tied into this was an increasing number of impoverished and runaway children, teenagers, and young adults, which created more street children or street youth...

In the modern world, home construction became increasingly specialized and electric wiring and plumbing added to the cost of homes. Today, few people are capable of building their own homes. Specialization increases demand and price, which raises the cost of living. Building laws, codes, ordinances, and zoning limits may make home ownership even more expensive. In many places, houses without electricity and plumbing, or without foundations, that would once have been legal are now banned as substandard..The industrial revolution caused a great migration from the rural areas to urban areas. Urban areas often have more complex building codes to handle the denser populations in modern cities. City ordinances coupled with higher land prices may make housing even more expensive in such urban areas..and then you get a job and can't afford to live on it..
whats the minimum wage again Blair Cameron etc etc etc ...

Arrow All Wars Are Bankers' Wars

Quote:
In the beginning of World War I, Woodrow Wilson had adopted initially a policy of neutrality. But the Morgan Bank, which was the most powerful bank at the time, and which wound up funding over 75 percent of the financing for the allied forces during World War I … pushed Wilson out of neutrality sooner than he might have done, because of their desire to be involved on one side of the war.

Now, on the other side of that war, for example, was the National City Bank, which, though they worked with Morgan in financing the French and the British, they also didn’t have a problem working with financing some things on the German side, as did Chase …

When Eisenhower became president … the U.S. was undergoing this expansion by providing, under his doctrine, military aid and support to countries [under] the so-called threat of being taken over by communism … What bankers did was they opened up hubs, in areas such as Cuba, in areas such as Beirut and Lebanon, where the U.S. also wanted to gain a stronghold in their Cold War fight against the Soviet Union. And so the juxtaposition of finance and
foreign policy were very much aligned...

Killed by benefits cuts: Starving soldier died 'as result of Millionaire Iain Duncan Smith's welfare reform' ..Diabetic David Clapson, 59, died with just £3.44 left in his account after his Jobseeker’s Allowance was axed because he missed an appointment.. Struggle: David died hungry and penniless with no way to pay his bills

A diabetic ex-soldier died starving and skint after officials axed his benefits.

David Clapson, 59, was stripped of the cash after missing an appointment under harsh Coalition reforms.

He died in Stevenage, Herts, with just £3.44 left in his account.

David once faced death on a daily basis as he served his country loyally in the terror hell of Northern Ireland..

And when he left the Army he went straight into the workplace with BT before becoming a full-time carer for his sick mother..

After she went into a home, diabetic David turned to the state for help while he looked for work.

But under the Coalition’s callous new benefits rules he had his £71.70 a week Jobseeker’s Allowance axed – merely because he missed an appointment with an adviser.

Stripped of his income, the 59-year-old could not afford food or electricity and died starving, penniless and alone at his home.

His death was from diabetic ketoacidosis – caused by not taking his insulin...

Tonight his distraught sister Gill Thompson told how she believes he may have stopped injecting himself with the life-saving drug after becoming so desperate over his lack of cash and work.

Choking back tears, she said: “I think he just gave up. I want the lessons to be learned. I don’t want anybody else to die. He shouldn’t have died like that. You wouldn’t let an animal die like that, would you?

“I just, I look at food now and think, ‘My brother didn’t have any.’

She stormed: “He should hang his head in shame. David served his country. Treating him like this is disgusting.

“This tragic death is a direct result of Iain Duncan Smith’s welfare reforms”(making people go into the job centre everyday as well)...

When David died he had just £3.44 to his name, six tea bags, a tin of soup and an out-of-date can of sardines.. His electricity card was out of credit meaning the fridge where he should have kept his insulin chilled was not working...

A coroner also found he had no food in his stomach..

A pile of CVs for job applications were found near David’s body..

Gill, 57, demanded a change to the welfare system she believes caused her brother’s death. She said officials knew he was diabetic as he nearly died when his benefits were stopped once before..

Diabetes mellitus (DM) also known as simply diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. This high blood sugar produces the symptoms of frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger...

Quote:
Duncan Smith was born in Edinburgh, in Scotland, in 1954. He is the son of W. G. G. Duncan Smith, a Group Captain of the British Royal Air Force, who was highly decorated in World War II, and Pamela Summers, a ballerina. They were married in 1946. He is a descendant of Adam Duncan, the admiral who defeated the Dutch Navy at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797..Duncan Smith's maternal great-grandmother was a Japanese woman living in the then Peking, Ellen Oshey, who married Pamela's grandfather, merchant seaman Captain Samuel Lewis Shaw, from Ireland.. Other relations include Canadian CBC wartime broadcaster Peter Stursberg, who was born in China, and whose 2002 book No Foreign Bones in China records the story of the Anglo-Japanese couple, and his son, current CBC vice-president Richard Stursberg.. Through Captain Shaw, Duncan Smith is also a distant relative of George Bernard Shaw, the Irish playwright and socialist..He was commissioned into the Scots Guards as a second lieutenant on 28 June 1975. He was assigned the service number 500263.. He was promoted to lieutenant on 28 June 1977.. He was moved to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers on 2 April 1981, signalling his retirement from the military..His se7en-year service included spells in Northern Ireland and Rhodesia, where he served as aide-de-camp to Major-General Sir John Acland...

In August 2013,Millionaire Duncan Smith was accused of being disingenuous by the CEO of the Trussell Trust, which now provides foodbanks in the U.K, when he attempted to use the Trussell Trust to support his view that the reason behind "the explosion in demand" for their services was not due to the effect of recent benefit cuts but rather due to a growth in awareness that such services exist. Charities reported they are now "seeing children in Lancashire with pot bellies, sunken cheeks and sallow complexions like youngsters found in famine-ravaged countries".. On World Food Day in October 2013 the Trussell Trust called for an inquiry to investigate the tripling in numbers of people using their food banks in the past year and the rise in U.K hunger and food poverty which they describe as now reaching "scandalous levels" and reports of mothers "not eating for days because they’ve been sanctioned for seemingly illogical reasons, or people leaving hospital after a major operation to find that their benefits have been stopped or delayed. It’s not right that so many more people are now being referred to foodbanks due to problems with welfare, especially as much of this is preventable" Oxfam commented "These figures lay bare the shocking
scale of destitution, hardship and hunger in the UK...

Arrow Root of War

Quote:
The human cost of the summer conflict with Israel was brutal: 2,104 Palestinians were killed and more than 10,000 people were injured in the small territory, and the chronically under-resourced Shifa was stretched to the brink in its response..The most common injuries sustained in the conflict were trauma injuries resulting from shellfire or building collapses, and burns caused by the heat of blasts..More than a month after the ceasefire, hundreds of Palestinians injured in the conflict are still struggling for their lives..One of the most serious cases was that of Abdullah Abu Harbeed, a 24-year-old man, newly married to a young woman called Iman.. Abdullah was injured in an air strike; most of the bones in his left arm were shattered after building debris fell on him.. As he was getting up he fell on unexploded shell fragments. The second blast ripped out half his pelvis, removing a third of his femur - the biggest, thickest bone in the body - and half his hip bone. A huge semicircle of flesh was carved out from his side, and nothing held his left leg to the rest of his body apart from mere inches of flesh..That happened four weeks before the arrival of the British doctors. Confronted with such a complex case, their Palestinian colleagues were stuck...

They say that I am the lord of war, but perhaps it is you..You know who's going to inherit the Earth? Arms dealers.. Because everyone else is too busy killing each other.. That's the secret to survival. Never go to war.. Especially with yourself..They say, "Evil prevails when good men fail to act".. What they ought to say is, "Evil prevails"...The first and most important rule of gun-running is: Never get shot with your own merchandise..I don't want people dead, Agent Valentine.. I don't put a gun to anybody's head and make them shoot.. But shooting is better for business.. But, I prefer people to fire my guns and miss.. Just as long as they are firing..Without operations like mine it would be impossible for certain countries to conduct a respectable war.. I was able to navigate around those inconvenient little arms embargoes..A wound this big is like having a baby... So much blood and energy is diverted trying to heal it; eventually your system wears out, organs fail and you will die..In the end, there was nothing for it but to remove Abdullah's leg entirely from the top.. Because there won't be any stump on which to attach a prosthesis, he will have to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair..

Quote:
The seasoned surgeons were shocked by the footage of the emergency room of the Shifa Hospital - Gaza's busiest - on 31 July, when more than 200 injured Palestinians were brought through its doors.

They were part of a team of British doctors from London's King's College Hospital who travelled to Gaza to set up a programme for advanced limb reconstruction for victims of war injuries.

But neither Dr Naveen nor Dr Simon had ever been to the Middle East before, let alone a conflict zone.

The previous week, worlds away in the brightly lit and warm yellow of one of King's operating theatres during a routine procedure, a Nelly Furtado song playing on a radio in the background, plastic reconstruction surgeon Dr Naveen considered the trip ahead.

"I'm terrified of leaving behind my wife and two small children. But I want to do something like this. Someone with the skills that I've been trained with, working in a state-of-the-art facility like King's, ought to be able to transfer these to a place that needs it like Gaza."

Dr Simon, who leads King's trauma unit, said that despite his nervousness about going to Gaza, he felt a duty to his colleagues in the hospitals in the Strip..

Gaza City's Shejaiya district was badly affected by the recent conflict, and many residents still choose to live in the ruins rather than in crowded shelters...

Have TPTB ever thought about having smaller Hospitals..

Or maybe getting to the Root cause of Dis-ease ?..Carry On Matron !...

Ebola fury in Spain as nurses throw surgical gloves at prime minister's car as he visits hospital caring for gravely ill victim..Health workers have jeered the Spanish prime minister and thrown gloves at him as he visited the Madrid hospital where a nurse with Ebola is being treated today amid claims staff are stressed out..The nurses gathered around Mariano Rajoy's motorcade at the end of his visit to the Carlos III hospital to protest at the government's handling of the case of Teresa Romero..The nurse, is the first person to have contracted Ebola outside of Africa, after becoming infected by a Spanish priest repatriated from Africa with the disease as she treated him at the Carlos III Hospital...She is said to be in a serious but stable condition and has being described as at 'serious risk' of dying by Madrid's regional leader...

The protest comes after it was reported staff were working under stressful conditions at the hospital as some nurses stay away from work, fearful they might catch the deadly virus..One of the nurses caring for Mrs Romero, Charly Manuel Torres, told AFP: 'There are fewer staff signing up to help by providing voluntary extra cover at the hospital...'We are very stressed. We are working under a lot of pressure'..

According to other reports, medical workers have been calling in sick with some even formally resigning from their posts..Meanwhile health workers' unions say training and equipment at the Carlos III hospital were insufficient to deal with the deadly Ebola crisis..Health professionals have blamed substandard equipment and protective suits for the infection spreading..The hospital also specialises in infectious diseases but parts of it were recently closed at a time of public spending cuts..

But after visiting the Carlos III hospital where the infected nurse lay, the prime minister said the situation was 'complex and difficult,' but he was 'absolutely convinced' everything necessary would be done to beat the crisis..The deputy premier Soraya Saenz de Santamria also told a news conference the government was working 'to give the best care possible to Teresa Romero, to transmit calm to the population and to coordinate our actions.'Ms Saenz said she herself would head the new committee, which will bring together Health Minister Ana Mato and representatives of various other ministries...

It comes after se7en people turned themselves in to an Ebola isolation unit in Madrid yesterday, where Mrs Romero is being cared for..The seven new admissions included two hairdressers who had given Romero a beauty treatment before she was diagnosed with Ebola, and hospital staff who had treated the 44-year-old nurse..A hospital spokeswoman said there were now 14 people in the isolation unit on its sealed-off sixth floor..Among them were Mrs Romero's, her husband, and health workers who had cared for her since she was admitted on Monday..Two doctors who treated her have been admitted for precautionary observation, while two nurses who worked alongside Mrs Romero Ramos are also in quarantine..One of the doctors has complained that the sleeves on his protective suit were too short...It has also been alleged that the nurse found out she had the virus through a media report, while looking at her mobile phone...

When Hutter is eating dinner and accidentally cuts his thumb, Orlok tries to suck the blood out, but his repulsed guest pulls his hand away..Reading a book about vampires that he took from the local inn, Hutter starts to suspect that Orlok is Nosferatu, the "Byrd of Death".. Hutter escapes the castle through the window, but is knocked unconscious by the fall and awakes in a hospital..When he is sufficiently recovered, he hurries home.. Meanwhile, the coffins are shipped down river on a raft.. They are transferred to a schooner, but not before one is opened by the crew, revealing a multitude of rats.. The sailors on the ship get sick one by one; soon all but the captain and first mate are dead..Despite the best efforts by government's and local authorities to control the situation, society is beginning to collapse and the remaining survivors are given to chaos..There are many deaths in the town, which are blamed on the plague. Knock, who had been committed to a psychiatric ward, escapes after murdering the warden. The townspeople give chase, but he eludes them by climbing a roof, then using a scarecrow.. Meanwhile, Orlok stares from his window at the sleeping Ellen. Against her husband's wishes, Ellen had read the book he found...

For many years she was invariably known as Mademoiselle Docteur or Fräulein Doktor, her actual name being revealed only in 1945 from German intelligence documents captured by the Allies after World War II, by which time she had already died of miliary tuberculosis in 1940..By the war's end, Schragmüller held the rank of lieutenant and had been awarded the Iron Cross First Class..Under cover as a Spanish contessa, she recruits Spanish nurses to staff a hospital train to serve the Allied front.. Arrow Crags of Tumbledown Mountain

Tumbledown 88 Part 3...
Quote:
The Battle of Mount Tumbledown was an engagement in the Falklands War, one of a series of battles that took place during the British advance towards StanLey..On the night of 13 June – 14 June 1982, the British launched an assault on Mount Tumbledown, one of the highest points near the town of Port Stanley, the capital and succeeded in driving Argentinian forces from the mountain. This close-quarters night battle was later dramatized in the BBC TV Drama Tumbledown..The attacking British forces consisted of the 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards (2SG), mortar detachments from 42 Commando, Royal Marines and the 1st Battalion, 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles, (1/7 GR) as well as support from a troop of the Blues and Royals equipped with 2 Scorpion and 2 Scimitar armoured vehicles...On the morning of 13 June, the Scots Guards were moved by Hellicopter from their position at Bluff Cove to an assembly area near Goat Ridge, west of Mount Tumbledown..

A daytime assault was initially planned, but was postponed at the British battalion commander's request..In a meeting with his company commanders the consensus was that the long uphill assault across the harsh ground of Tumbledown would be suicidal in daylight..At 8:30 p.m. on 13 June the diversionary attack began. The 2nd Bn Scots Guards' Reconnaissance Platoon, commanded by Major Richard Bethell (a former SAS officer), and supported by 4 light tanks of the Blues and Royals, clashed with an Argentinian marine company in a delay position on the lower slopes of Mount William. On Mount William's southern slopes, one of the tanks was taken out of action by a booby trap..At 9 p.m., half an hour after the start of the diversionary attack, Major Iain Dalzel-Job's G Company started its advance of nearly two miles.. Reaching its objective undetected, the company found the western end of the mountain undefended and occupied it easily, but later came under heavy shellfire that wounded Major Dalzel-Job in the head..Meanwhile, two Royal Navy frigates, HMS Yarmouth and Active, were pounding Tumbledown with their 4.5 inch guns. At one stage Lieutenant Colonel Michael Scott, (Commanding Officer of 2 SG), thought the battalion might have to withdraw and attack again the next night, The old nails were being bitten a bit, if we had been held on Tumbledown it might have encouraged them to keep on fighting..The fighting was hard going for Left Frank... The Argentinians had well dug-in machine guns and snipers.. At 2:30 a.m., however, a second British assault overwhelmed the men of Miño, Silva and Mosteirin but the bulk of Vazquez's platoon would continue fighting till about 7:00 am.. The British troops swarmed over the mountaintop and killed or wounded Silva's men, at times fighting with fixed bayonets..Major Kiszely, who was to become a senior general after the war, was the first man into the Argentine position, personally shooting two Argentinian conscripts and bayoneting a third, his bayonet breaking in two.. Seeing their company commander among the Argentinians inspired 14 and 15 Platoons to make the final dash across open ground to get within bayoneting distance of the remaining marines..Major Simon Price sent 2 and 3 Platoons forward, preceded by a barrage of 66 mm rockets to clear the Argentine reinforcements. Major Price placed 1 Platoon high up in the rocks to provide fire support for the assault troops..Lieutenant Robert Lawrence led 3 Platoon around to the right of the Argentinian platoons, hoping to take the Argentinians by surprise. They were detected, however, and the British were briefly pinned down by gunfire before a bayonet charge overwhelmed the Argentinian defenders..

The Falklands!. Two small islands to the north-east of Tierra del Fuega, two specks floating in the sea, like tiny scales dislodged from the great curl of the scorpion's tail that is South America.. With a coastline as long as Norway's circumscribing a land mass no bigger than Wales, the Falklands are subject to relentless winds and the hazards of wind-chill factor that accompany them..The cocking handle of my XM203 snapped forward, chambering the first 5.56mm round. I applied the safety-catch.. My fingers checked the smooth metallic cases of the 40mm bombs located in the pockets and the bandoliers criss-crossing my chest.. Cradling the loaded rifle in the crook of my left arm, I stood motionless in the growing Darkness...

It's our task to placate the ancient ones, as it's yours to be offered up to them..Everything was done within the guidelines...http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...2&postcount=28

The origins of Beverley can be traced back to the time of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria in the 7th century..After the Norman conquest of England, many pilgrims flocked to Beverley upon hearing reports of miracles wrought by the town's founder, John. However, much of the North of England rejected Norman rule, and sought to reinstate Viking rule..The town suffered a large fire in 1188 which destroyed numerous houses, and damaged Beverley Minster..As a result of the tensions across the North of England, governance duties were handed over to the Council of the North so the Tudors could control the area at arm's length..The 17th century began badly for Beverley as many people died of the plague..A permanent military presence was established in the town with the completion of Victoria Barracks in 1878.. The barracks closed in 1977, and the only army presence in the area is now the Defence School of Transport at Normandy Barracks Leconfield, two miles to the north..A service number is an identification code used to identify a person within a large group. Service numbers are most often associated with the military; however, they may be used in civilian term as well.. Social Security Numbers may be seen as types of service numbers...

Rising rates of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in recent decades, including external genital warts (EGWs), underscore the need for effective management of this common sexually transmitted disease..Although treatment is a vital aspect that aims primarily to resolve physical symptoms, health care providers must also address the psychosocial burden that typically accompanies diagnosis, treatment, remission, and recurrence. Education and counseling are integral components of care to address the cascade of negative emotional reactions that follow diagnosis, which often include anger, shame, stigma, frustration, and fear.. Health care providers should offer patient information that is clear and simple, both verbally and in written form.. Research to date has shown that information is most helpful when it is conveyed in a supportive tone and avoids stigmatization.. Treatment decisions should consider the patient's preferences and the clinician's ability to offer certain therapies.. A locally relevant algorithm and an individualized treatment approach are recommended by various treatment guidelines to improve the chances of compliance and treatment success.. Given that success rates are variable, monitoring treatment is also necessary to gauge the patient's response to treatment, local reactions, and the potential need to switch treatments.. Patients diagnosed with EGWs should also be screened for other sexually transmitted diseases because coinfection is common.. Vaccination is becoming an strategies for HPV infections and should be considered for eligible patients...

Lightbulb Nursing

This nurse is employed at a nursing home..Nursing shortage is a problem in several districts of Norway...
Quote:
Visa Processing Retrogression for Foreign Nurses in US is a visa shortage for nurses in the US due to the retrogression in processing employment-based green cards to be petitioned for foreign nurses (since around 2006 or 2007.) While the number of nurses who are US citizens and permanent residents without jobs increases in the US, there is still a shortage of nurses in some regions.. The long-term outlook of nursing shortage nationwide is expected to continue and worsen in the next few decades.. HR 1929 and HR 1933 were introduced to the US Congress in May 2011 - aimed at relieving this retrogression - both bills died before ever reaching the US Senate...

A nursing career is seen as a ticket out of poverty in the Philippines ...

Much of the 2012 Presidential campaign focused on job creation as a first priority, but the fiscal cliff and other budgetary debates took precedence in 2012 and early 2013.. Critics argue prioritizing deficit reduction is misplaced, as there is no immediate fiscal crisis but there is a high level of unemployment, particularly long-term unemployment..They are dismantling the sleeping middle class.. More and more people are becoming poor.. We are their cattle.. We are being bred for slavery...
