Default Ga. Passes Medical Marijuana Bill Families Return

Georgia Families look to Return Home After Passage of Medical Marijuana Bill

COLUMBUS, Ga. - At least 17 Georgia families who have relocated to Colorado to seek medical treatment for their sick children are one step closer to coming home after the House and Senate passed a medical marijuana bill.

House Bill 1 heads to the desk of Governor Nathan Deal, who is expected to sign the bill on Friday.

The Rowe family, who relocated to from Butler, Georgia to Colorado with their 15-year-old daughter Ashleigh, celebrated when they heard the news.

“We were high-fiving and clapping and having tears of joy,” said Prissley Rowe. “We're excited because it looks like we're going to be able to come back home. We can't wait...it's been hard being away from family and friends. Colorado is beautiful, but it's not home.”

The Rowe family moved to Colorado in August with their daughter who has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which causes extreme seizures. Her parents say they've seen significant improvement since gaining access to medical marijuana and they expect things to get even better once they get home.

“Kids respond to parents stress and its stressful being out here by ourselves,” said Rowe. “I think we'll all be a lot more relaxed and she'll be able to calm down herself.”

The Wilson family has also seen improvement with their daughter Ava since they moved from Columbus to Colorado. The 8-year-old used to suffer hundreds of seizures a day – but since starting the treatment -- those seizures have stopped.

“I love seeing her happy, I love seeing her personality back,” said Chey Wilson in a December interview. “But also I'm literally blown away by the fact that it works so well.”

The final version of the bill allows cannabis oil to be used to treat nine disorders – including cancer, Crohn's disease, Lou Gehrig's, mitochondrial disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, seizure disorders and sickle cell disease.

Governor Nathan Deal is expected to sign the bill into law Friday.

State Rep. Allen Peake, a Macon Republican and the committee's co-chair, launched the legalization effort during the 2014 General Assembly session. The bill passed in the House, but failed in the final hour of the Senate in 2014.

Peake says the medical marijuana would be low THC so patients would not get high from it. The medical cannabis oil would be taken in an oral form.
