The Essenes were a sect of Second Temple Judaism that flourished from the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century CE which some scholars claim seceded from the Zadokite priests..He further adds that the Essenes ritually immersed in water every morning, ate together after prayer, devoted themselves to charity and benevolence, forbade the expression of anger, studied the books of the elders, preserved secrets, and were very mindful of the names of the angels kept in their sacred writings..Pliny, also a geographer, located them in the desert near the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered...

To the reader unfamiliar with German, the ß's "s" origin may be obscure or nearly undetectable, particularly in the Sulzbacher Form. Long s itself was frequently confused with "f," which led to its demise in English writing around 1800..There have been 4 typographical forms of the Antiqua ß.. Currently, most Antiqua ß are shaped according to the second or the fourth form.. The 1st & 3rd form are seldom found..In Germany and Austria, the letter ß is present on computer and typewriter keyboards, normally to the right on the upper row..'ß' is used by some in romanizing the Sumerian language, to mean 'sh'.. Some Sumerian scholars use 'sz' or '$' instead..It was also in use for Latin during the Medieval and Renaissance time, until the 18th century. E.g.: clarißimus - clarissimus - the brightest; eße - esse - to be; amavißet - amavisset and so on..

Memories of a Revolutionary...

Quote:
An Active Service Unit (ASU) was a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) cell of 5 to 8 members, tasked with carrying out armed attacks.. In 2002 the IRA had about 1,000 active members of which about 300 were in active service units..The bulk of attacks from 77 onwards were the responsibility of a second type of unit, the ASU. To improve security and operational capacity these ASUs were smaller, tight-knit cells, usually consisting of 5 to 8 members, for carrying out armed attacks. The ASU's weapons were controlled by a quartermaster under the direct control of the IRA leadership..By the late 80s and early 90s, it was estimated that the IRA had roughly 300 members in ASUs and approximately 450 serving in supporting roles..The exception to this reorganisation was the South Armagh Brigade which retained its traditional hierarchy and battalion structure and used relatively large numbers of volunteers in its actions.. Some operations, like the attack on Cloghogue checkpoint or the South Armagh sniper squads, involved as many as 20 volunteers, most of them in supporting roles..The majority of soldiers shot dead in 72, the bloodiest year of the conflict in Northern Ireland, fell, in effect, victims of IRA snipers...

During the late hours of 30 April, a group of 4 Provisional IRA members held a family hostage in Killeen and stole a mechanical excavator. This was to be used to build a makeshift ramp up to the Dublin–Belfast railway line, which drew parallel to the Dublin–Belfast motorway (M1).. At the same time, other IRA members stole a Renault Master van in Dundalk, which was then loaded with 2,200 lb (1,000 kg) of home-made explosives.. The van was fitted with wheels that could run on the rails.. The excavator moved up the ramp and lifted the van onto the railway.. The van was then driven some 800 metres north and a mile-long wire attached to a triggering device was added to the bomb.. Meanwhile, IRA members in support set up roadblocks on both sides of the border to keep people away.. The IRA unit who set up the checkpoint in the Republic wore Garda Síochána uniforms..

A British Army patrol from the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers heard what sounded like a train and spotted the van on the rails heading towards the checkpoint, which was alerted immediately..At 2:05, the explosive went off, demolishing the checkpoint.. The 10-ton sangar was lifted off of its foundation and thrown 12 yards away.. Fusilier Grundy was killed almost instantly, while 23 troops were injured.. The rest of the soldiers, all inside a reinforced concrete bunker, survived the massive blast..Shipping services to Liverpool were provided from 1837 by the Dundalk Steam Packet Company..Dundalk also has a basketball team The Dundalk Ravens..Descendents of the Earls of Roden are also known to be living in the area of Beechlawn, Coolock on the northside of Dublin..The family seat was Hyde Hall, near Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire and Tollymore Park, near Bryansford, County Down..Dundalk is twinned with Rezé (Breton: Reudied, Gallo: Rezae) is a commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France..Rezé dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Portus Ratiatus (port of Rezé) and Ratiatum Pictonum Portus (picton port of Rezé)..Dundalk is considered one of the first inner-ring suburbs of Baltimore...

Prime Minister Cameron has ordered an investigation into official papers which suggest the Thatcher government helped India plan an attack against Sikh separatists in the Golden Temple..The 1984 raid on Sikhism's holiest shrine at Amritsar angered Sikhs around the world who accused the Indian army of desecration.. The death toll remains disputed, with the Indian authorities putting it in the hundreds and Sikh groups in the thousands..The assault triggered the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who ordered the attack, when two Sikh bodyguards killed her in revenge several months later...

The Bible refers to it as "the se7en stars" (Amos 5:8)..

Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel..Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth..Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them..For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right...Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time..Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing..Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light..As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him..1 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies..Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts..Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols..Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts..

The constellation of Ursa Major has been seen as a bear by many distinct civilizations..These se7en stars (septentriones, from the phrase septem triōnēs, meaning "se7en plough oxen") are the origin of the Latin word septentriōnēs meaning "north" and now found as the adjective septentrional (northern) in English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish..In Canada and the United States the asterism is known as the Big Dipper because the major stars can be seen to follow the rough outline of a large ladle or "dipper".. This figuration appears to be derived originally from Africa, where it was sometimes seen as a drinking gourd.. In the 19th century, runaway slaves would "follow the Drinking Gourd" to the north with hopes of freedom..The Dipper appears on some Tribal flags, while the flag of the state of Alaska features a stylized Big Dipper and North Star..Within Ursa Major the stars of the Big Dipper have Bayer designations in consecutive Greek alphabetical order from the bowl to the handle..Five of the stars of the Big Dipper are at the core of the Ursa Major Moving Group..In Tolkien's Middle-earth mythos, it is called the Valacirca (Sickle of the Valar), the sign of Hope signifying doom for Evil, while in T.A. Barron's Great Tree of Avalon series, it is called the Wizard's Staff, symbolizing Merlin's staff...

Lightbulb Nish Bruce

Lucca Coat of arms..

Parachute Regiment's display team at an American airshow..

Quote:
Sergeant Charles "Nish" Bruce QGM (8 August 1956 – 8 January 2002) was a former British Army soldier and freefall expert of high altitude military parachuting who served in 22 (SAS) Special Air Service (1982–88).. He served with the 22 SAS in the Falklands War, on anti-drug operations in South and Central America and in Northern Ireland during Operation Banner for which he was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal in 86..He received the South Atlantic Medal in 1982 with B Squadron of the 22 Special Air Service and the General Service Medal with the 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment for services in Northern Ireland during The Troubles..In 82, Bruce was the first special forces soldier to parachute into the South Atlantic during the Falklands War a couple of weeks ahead of the fleet carrying the main task force to recapture the islands and was a member of Operation Mikado..

In November and December 1984 Bruce was involved in two SAS covert counter terrorist operations against the Provisional Irish Republican Army in Kesh, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.. These operations led to him being awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for exemplary acts of bravery, the subsequent death of his colleague Al Slater and the high profile deaths of IRA Members Antoine Mac Giolla Bhrighde and Kieran Fleming.. Slater was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for his role and bravery in the action..At the time of his death, with nearly 30 years in military and civilian parachuting, Bruce had logged over 8,500 parachute jumps.. His first parachute jump was a static line jump on 12 October 74 from Thruxton Airfield, and his parachute log books show that he learnt his basic parachuting skills at Sibson Airfield, Peterborough from 74 to 78 prior to joining The Red Devils (Parachute Regiment) Display Team and achieving his D Rating in April 79.. Bruce obtained his BPA Approved Instructor rating in March 1983 and became a Tandem skydiving Pilot/Master in 87..After leaving the SAS, as a result of a clash with his superiors, Bruce worked with comedian Jim Davidson before taking the role of second in command in an undercover operation codenamed Operation Lock, a WWF sponsored Anti-Poaching operation in Southern Africa (1988–1989) led by former SAS Founder David Sterling and former SAS Colonel Ian Crooke.. Following Operation Lock, Bruce worked for Lebanese billionaire and former Prime Minister of Lebanon Saad Hariri in Washington DC as his professional bodyguard (1990–92)..In the early 1990s Bruce trained with Loel Guinness' High Adventure Company and Joe Kittinger to skydive from the edge of space from 130,000 feet and break the highest altitude freefall record previously set by Joe Kittinger himself in the 60s...

Argentan Coat of arms..

It was not the aim of the expedition to go to the summit.. Having reached the Advanced Base Camp at 21,300 feet, the expedition was cut short following the death of Karl Henize, who died of high altitude pulmonary edema on 5 October 1993.. Although the expedition was marred by the death of Henize, the TEPC meter had done its job, and when it was later analysed at NASA Headquarters, an increment was added to the human physiology database.. Freefall is described by Andy McNab as "This is Bravo Two Zero meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest..Despite bouts of recovery, after 8 years of consistent reoccurring mental illness and periods sectioned in hospital, Bruce apparently killed himself on 8 January 2002 at the age of 45 years.. He jumped from a Cessna 172 at 5000 feet over Fyfield, Oxfordshire, without a parachute while on a private flight home from Spain to Hinton Skydiving Centre..Bruce was survived by his son, Jason, his only child.. On 16 January 2002, Bruce was cremated at Banbury Crematorium in Oxfordshire and his ashes were subsequently scattered by his son and former colleagues during a memorial skydive in April 2002 at Hinton Skydiving Centre..Some have looked to attribute his breakdown and suicide to posttraumatic stress disorder..Under the Geneva Convention, I'm afraid I cannot answer that question..Turned out they were more strung-out than we were..THE mother of a former SAS man who plunged to his death from a light aircraft does not believe he committed suicide..She added: "He was not depressed as far as I know.. It is all a complete mystery.. Charles was a great fellow.. We are so proud of our son."..He and his girlfriend had been in Spain taking part in a skydiving display, and were making their way back to Northamptonshire after a brief refuelling stop in France.. Judith Haig, Nish's partner and an experienced skydiver in her own right, was flying their jointly owned plane.. Nish was in the passenger seat...

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a 4 seat, single engine, high wing, fixed-wing aircraft made by the Cessna Aircraft Company.. First flown in 1955, more Cessna 172s have been built than any other aircraft..The Skyhawk's main competitors have been the Beechcraft Musketeer and Grumman AA-5 series (neither currently in production), the Piper Cherokee, and, more recently, the Diamond DA40..A Cessna 172 was used in 58 to set the world record for flight endurance; the record still stands..After the flight, Cook said: “Next time I feel in the mood to fly endurance, I'm going to lock myself in our garbage can with the vacuum cleaner running.. That is, until my psychiatrist opens up for business in the morning”...The 172P, or Skyhawk P, was introduced in 1981 to solve the reliability problems of the "N" engine..A variant of the 172, the T-41 Mescalero was used as a trainer with the United States Air Force and Army.. In addition, the United States Border Patrol uses a fleet of 172s for aerial surveillance along the Mexico-US border..The Irish Air Corps uses the Reims version for aerial surveillance and monitoring of cash, prisoner and explosive escorts, in addition to army cooperation and pilot training roles..On January 5, 2002, high school student Charles J. Bishop stole a Cessna 172, N2371N, and intentionally crashed it into the side of the Bank of America Tower in downtown Tampa, Florida, killing only himself and otherwise causing very little damage..Mescaline or 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine is a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid of the phenethylamine class, known for its hallucinogenic effects similar to those of LSD and psilocybin..It occurs naturally in the peyote cactus..It is also found in small amounts in certain members of the Fabaceae (bean) family, including Acacia berlandieri epithet comes from the name of Jean-Louis Berlandier, a French naturalist who studied wildlife native to Texas and Mexico..Mescaline elicits a pattern of sympathetic arousal, with the peripheral nervous system being a major target for this substance...

Fyfield's toponym is derived from the Old English Fif Hide (10th century).. It was spelt Fifhide from the 10th to the 16th century, but also Fivehide in the 11th century, Fifide from the 13th to the 15th century, Fifhede in the 15th century and Fighfield or Fyfylde in the 16th century..Abingdon is 5.5 miles (8.9 km) south of Oxford and 5 miles (8 km) north of Didcot in the flat valley of the Thames on its west (right) bank, where the small river Ock flows in from the Vale of White Horse..In 1790, Abingdon Lock was built, replacing navigation to the town via the Swift Ditch.. Judith and the Head of Holofernes from the Book of Judith, depicted in this painting by Gustav Klimt...
Quote:
The 13th century poet, Thomas the Rhymer, made the prophecy Tyde what may, what'er betyde, Haig shall be Haig of Bemersyde.. Bemersyde has been in the hands of the Haigs for 800 years from the founder, Petrus de Haga, to the present chief..Alexander Nisbet asserted that the Haigs were of Pictish or early British extraction.. However it is evident that the name de Haga is Norman..The Haig Barons of Bemersyde swore fealty to Edward I of England and appear on the Ragman Rolls in 1296.. However later they strongly supported the struggle for Scottish Independence and fought for William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297..The sixth Haig Laird followed Robert the Bruce to the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 even though at the time he was only se7enteen years old.. He was later killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333..The current chief of Clan Haig is Alexander Haig, 3rd Earl Haig (b. 1961), grandson of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig of First World War fame..

Motto Tyde What May..

Judith is a feminine given name derived from the Hebrew name יְהוּדִית or Yehudit, meaning "She will be praised" or "woman of Judea".. Judith appeared in the Old Testament as the wife of Esau and in the Apocryphal Book of Judith..Although it was likely written by a Jew during the Second Temple period, there is no evidence that the Book of Judith was ever considered authoritative or a candidate for canonicity by any Jewish group..The Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Bible does not contain it, nor was it found among the Dead Sea Scrolls or referred to in any early Rabbinic literature..The Book of Judith has a tragic setting that appealed to Jewish patriots and it warned of the urgency of adhering to Mosaic law, generally speaking, but what accounted for its enduring appeal was the drama of its narrative.. The story revolves around Judith, a daring and beautiful widow, who is upset with her Jewish countrymen for not trusting God to deliver them from their foreign conquerors...

Kingdom of Heaven..The Mystic Dream...
Quote:
RAF Weston-on-the-Green is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the village. German prisoners of war and Canadian military personnel built it in 1915 for the Royal Flying Corps.. It is now a parachute training station...RAF Weston-on-the-Green is a former Royal Flying Corps station that was redeveloped after the Great War period..The station comes under the control of the nearby RAF Brize Norton, home of No.1 Parachute Training School RAF. The grass airfield at Weston is used regularly as a drop zone for military static line and freefall parachute training for the UK military, using C-130 Hercules aircraft based at RAF Brize Norton.. No military aircraft are based at RAF Weston-on-the-Green and the airfield is manned only part-time by RAF personnel..Sport skydiving also takes place at RAF Weston-on-the-Green under the auspices of the Royal Air Force Sports Parachute Association using civilian aircraft based on the airfield..There was, until 2011, a commercial parachute club, Skydive Weston, based at the field.. However that was forced to move its base of operations away from Weston by MoD cuts..The airfield was used for the launch of the first modern hot air balloon in the UK in 1967, called the Bristol Belle..Direction Length and surface 05/23-1,060 metres (3,478 ft) Grass-Runways are named by a number between 01 and 36..A runway can normally be used in both directions, and is named for each direction separately: e.g., "runway 33" in one direction is "runway 15" when used in the other..The two numbers always differ by 18 (= 180°)..

List of Dan Dare stories...

555 numbers are mentioned directly in the The Last Action Hero..555-2368" is phone number used in Ghostbusters and the TV series Rockford Files..King Erb of Gwent dies, his kingdom is divided into Gwent and Ergyng in Southern Wales..Wright is also an anglicized version of the Scots Gaelic clan name "MacIntyre" or "Mac an t-Saoir", meaning "Son of the Wright", or "Son of the Carpenter"..Around this time, the historian Jordanes writes several books, among them De origine actibusque Getarum..He would have lived if he had been issued with a £50 radio, the coroner told the hearing..Captain Wright - described as a "potential star" by his mother - had only just joined the special forces when he fell 2,500ft on November 17, 2005..He was taking his second-ever parachute jump at Weston-on-the-Green airfield, Oxfordshire, when his canopy became tangled..Instructors and fellow students watched helplessly as Captain Wright, 25, of the Queen's Gurkha Signal Corps, struggled in vain to control the flapping parachute..Oxfordshire's assistant deputy coroner Andrew Walker returned a narrative verdict. He said: "Let there be no doubt - this tragedy happened for the want of a simple, inexpensive piece of equipment"..Captain Wright's death is one in a long line of fatalities in Iraq and Afghanistan which have been blamed on equipment failures and shortages..As well as the Nimrod and Hercules crashes that killed a total of 24 servicemen, there was the death of Sergeant Steve Roberts, a tank commander who was shot after giving away his body armour because of shortages, and that of Fusilier Gordon Gentle, who died because a "chaotic" military supply chain meant a vital piece of equipment had not been fitted to his vehicle... He added that he was satisfied that Captain Wright, of Newport, South Wales, would have deployed his reserve earlier if he had been able to communicate with those observing his jump.."Captain Wright, on the balance of probability, would not have died had an operator on the ground at the drop zone been able to communicate with him using a radio.."At the time Captain Wright took the parachute course, requests for these radios had been refused"..The inquest was told about an email from Squadron Leader M J Ellis..In it, he said that the radios were "long overdue." In another memo, a senior instructor said radios should be issued "before we have a "major"' on our hands"..All of this pales into insignificance compared to the grief that we all feel at the loss of our beloved Daniel...

Bear Grylls Allergic to Bees ..
Quote:
Grylls grew up in Donaghadee in County Down, Northern Ireland, until the age of four when his family moved to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight.. He is the son of the Conservative party politician Sir Michael Grylls and Lady Sarah Grylls.. Lady Grylls was the daughter of Patricia Ford, briefly an Ulster Unionist Party MP, and cricketer and businessman Neville Ford.. Grylls has one sibling, an elder sister, Lara Fawcett, a cardio-tennis coach, who gave him the nickname 'Bear' when he was a week old..Grylls was educated at Eaton House, Ludgrove School and Eton College, where he helped start its first mountaineering club, and Birkbeck, University of London, where he graduated with a degree, obtained part-time, in Hispanic studies in 2002.. He also graduated from the University of West of England..From an early age, he learned to climb and sail with his father, who was a member of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron.. As a teenager, he learned to skydive and earned a second dan black belt in Shotokan karate..At age 8 he became a Cub Scout..He speaks English, Spanish, and French.. Grylls is a Christian, describing his faith as the "backbone" in his life...

After leaving school, Grylls briefly considered joining the Indian Army and hiked in the Himalayan mountains of Sikkim and West Bengal.. Eventually, Grylls joined the Territorial Army and, after passing selection, served as a reservist with the SAS in 21 SAS Regiment (Artists)-(Reserve), for 3 years until 1997..In 96, he suffered a freefall parachuting accident in Zambia. His canopy ripped at 4,900 metres (16,000 ft), partially opening, causing him to fall and land on his parachute pack on his back, which partially crushed 3 vertebrae.. Grylls later said: "I should have cut the main parachute and gone to the reserve but thought there was time to resolve the problem".. According to his surgeon, Grylls came "within a whisker" of being paralysed for life and at first it was questionable whether he would ever walk again.. Grylls spent the next 12 months in and out of military rehabilitation at Headley Court before being discharged from his medical treatment and directing his efforts into trying to get well enough to fulfil his childhood dream of climbing Mount Everest..

In 2004, Grylls was previously awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant commander in the Royal Naval Reserve; and in 2013 he was awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Royal Marines Reserve..On 16 May 1998, Grylls achieved his childhood dream climbed to the summit of Mount Everest, 18 months after breaking 3 vertebrae in a parachuting accident.. At 23, he was at the time among the youngest people to have achieved this feat..There is some controversy around whether he was, as claimed, the youngest Briton to have done so, as he was preceded by James Allen—an Australian climber with dual British citizenship who reached the summit in 95 at age 22..To prepare for climbing at such high altitudes in the Himalayas, in 97, Grylls became the youngest Briton to climb Ama Dablam, a peak once described by Sir Edmund Hillary as "unclimbable"..Ama Dablam means "Mother's necklace"; the long ridges on each side like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the hanging glacier thought of as the dablam, the traditional double-pendant containing pictures of the gods, worn by Sherpa women..

The classic view from the southwest..

The Chief Scout is the leader of The Scout Association, and is responsible for determining the direction and policies of Scouting in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Crown Overseas Territories.. Bear Grylls is the current Chief Scout after replacing Peter Duncan..There is a team of Commissioners who are responsible for the Scouting programme in their respective divisions..The Scout Association is divided into 4 mainland national groupings: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland..The Groups are the local organisations for Scouting, and are the direct descendants of the original Scout Patrols.. Groups can consist of one or more Beaver Colonies, Cub Packs, and Scout Troops and may also have one or more Scout Active Support Units, or an Explorer Scout Unit attached to it..Some Scout Groups belong to separate branches of the scouting programme called Air Scouts and Sea Scouts..There are a variety of different positions, ranks and roles that exist for adults.. The highest roles in the association are the honorary positions of Patron and President which is taken by the Head of State and a member of the Royal Family respectively, currently Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Kent..The Scout Promise is made by all members of The Scout Association from the Scout section upwards, including Leaders:

On my honour, I promise that I will do my best,
To do my duty to God and to the Queen,
To help other people,
And to keep the Scout Law..

Grylls hosts a series titled Born Survivor: Bear Grylls for the British Channel 4 and broadcast as Man vs. Wild in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, and the U.S.A., and as Ultimate Survival on the Discovery Channel in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The series features Grylls dropped into inhospitable places, showing viewers how to survive. Man vs. Wild debuted in 2006, and its success led it to lasting se7en seasons over 5 years..Grylls also regales the viewer with tales of adventurers stranded or killed in the wilderness..The show caused controversy after a programme consultant revealed that Grylls actually stayed in a motel on some nights – including an episode in Hawaii in which Grylls was ostensibly stranded on a deserted island – and that certain scenes were staged for him.. In one example, Grylls was portrayed lassoing a wild mustang in the Sierra Nevada, but it was claimed that this was in fact a tame animal from a nearby pony-trekking centre.. Grylls subsequently apologized to viewers who might have felt misled..In 2011, Grylls was in New Zealand during the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake..Following the incident, he appeared on New Zealand advertisements encouraging people to donate money to help rebuild the city..Grylls continued his fund-raising work for Global Angels by undertaking an expedition through the Northwest Passage...

The Prime Minister of Italy, officially the President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic (Italian: Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri della Repubblica Italiana) is the head of government of the Italian Republic..The office was first established in 1848 in Italy's predecessor state, the Kingdom of Sardinia—although it was not mentioned in the constitution, the Albertine Statute.. From 1848 to 1861 ten Prime Ministers governed the kingdom, most of them being right-wing politicians..After the Unification of Italy and the establishment of the kingdom, the procedure did not change. In fact the candidate for office was appointed by the king, and presided over a very unstable political system...

Cloak and dagger is an English term sometimes used to refer to situations involving intrigue, secrecy, espionage, or mystery...

The Om That Got Away - 1996 (1/7) ..

'The One That Got Away' is a 1995 book written under the pseudonym 'Chris Ryan' concerning the SAS patrol Bravo Two Zero, which was dropped behind enemy lines in Iraq in 1991.. The author was a member of the patrol and tells of his 8 day escape on foot to the Syrian border..Despite the book describing Ryan's single handed attack on two Iraqi 'Land-Rover type' vehicles, and killing two Iraqi soldiers with a knife, the SAS's Regimental Sergeant Major at the time of the patrol, and fellow Gulf War veteran, Peter Ratcliffe stated that, at the Regimental debrief, "[Ryan] made no mention at all of encountering enemy troops on his trek"...

Dr. Freeze...

The Black Hand (Arabic: الكف الاسود al-Kaff al-Aswad‎) was an anti-Zionist and anti-British militant organization in the British Mandate of Palestine. It was founded in 1930 and led until his death in 1935 by Syrian-born Sheikh Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, whose preaching was instrumental in laying the foundations for the formation of the Black Hand, which he used to proclaim jihad and attack Jewish settlers.. The idea for such a group appeared to crystallize after the 1929 riots, though one source says a decision was taken after the Day of Atonement incitement at the Wailing Wall in September 1928..By 1935, Black Hand had several hundred men - the figures differ from 200 to 800 - organised in cells of 5 men, and arranged military training for peasants..Black Hand (Italian: Mano Nera) was a type of extortion racket.. It was a method of extortion, not a criminal organization as such, though gangsters of Camorra and the Mafia practiced it...

Coburn, along with patrol members Andy McNab and Ian Pring all wrote letters to deceased patrol member Vince Phillips' family subsequent to the release of this book. Coburn wrote: "At no time throughout the patrol did Vince display the actions portrayed...On the contrary, the very fact that he was on patrol disputes [Ryan's] version of events, otherwise he would never have been allowed to deploy across the border".. Pring described the book as "a pack of lies" writing: "Vince DID NOT compromise the patrol or behave in the manner portrayed"..

Michael Asher's investigative book, "The Real Bravo Two Zero" (2003, ISBN 0-304-36554-8) also criticised Ryan's portrayal of Phillips.. Asher found that many of the negative attributes Ryan had described, did not correspond with the evidence, nor the other patrol member's accounts...

Concerning the TV adaptation of Ryan's book, McNab further wrote in a letter to The Times in 1996, "It is a pity that [Ryan] chose to cheapen his own achievement and the reputations of the regiment and of comrades who would have sacrificed their lives for his, had the situation demanded, by denigrating those of others"..Ratcliffe said of the book (and of Bravo Two Zero (1993)), "[It is] insensitive on [Ryan's] and [McNab's] parts to hide behind pseudonyms when they named their dead colleagues in their books, in deliberate contravention of the Regiment's traditions"..Coburn also commented on the book: "The portrayal of Vince Phillips was a despicable betrayal of what happened.. Revelations became more and more outrageous, culminating in a book and film that saw him portrayed in an unfair and undignified manner"..

The English idiom "don't judge a book by its cover" is a metaphorical phrase that means "you shouldn't prejudge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone"...

SAS Regimental Diary ..

In April 1940, the 1st Battalion, as part of the 24th Guards Brigade, took part in its first campaign of the war, during the expedition to Norway.. In North Africa, as part of the 22nd Guards Brigade, the 2nd Battalion took part in fighting against the Italians in Egypt followed by tough fighting in Libya, then also controlled by Italy.. In North Africa, in March 1943, the 2nd Battalion took part in the defensive Battle of Medenine, after the Germans had counter-attacked the Allies..No. 8 (Guards) Commando was a unit of the British Commandos and part of the British Army during the Second World War.. The Commando was formed in June 1940 primarily from members of the Brigade of Guards.. It was one of the units selected to be sent to the Middle East as part of Layforce..After Layforce (and No.8 Commando) were disbanded on 1 August 1941, Stirling remained convinced that due to the mechanised nature of war a small team of highly trained soldiers with the advantage of surprise could exact greater damage to the enemy's ability to fight than an entire platoon..

The Military Medal (MM) was a military decoration awarded to personnel of the British Army and other services, and formerly also to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, below commissioned rank, for bravery in battle on land..In 1993, the Military Medal was discontinued.. Since then the Military Cross has been awarded to personnel of all ranks within the British honours system..The MC now serves as the 3rd-level award for gallantry on land for all ranks of the British Armed Forces..The Mayfair Set is a series of programmes looking at how buccaneer capitalists of hot money were allowed to shape the climate of the Thatcher years, focusing on the rise of Colonel David Stirling, Jim Slater, James Goldsmith, and Tiny Rowland, all members of London's Clermont Club in the 1960s.The opening episode, Who Pays Wins, focuses on Colonel David Stirling..Part 2: Entrepreneur Spelt S.P.I.V..The rise of Jim Slater who became famous for writing an investment column in The Sunday Telegraph under the nom de plume of The Capitalist..Part 3: Destroy the Technostructure..This episode recounts the story of how James Goldsmith became one of the richest men in the world..Part 4: Twilight of the Dogs..By the 1980s, the day of the buccaneering tycoons was over.. Tiny Rowland, James Goldsmith, and Mohamed Al-Fayed were the only ones who were not finished...

McAleese later took part in the Falklands War in 1982, and was awarded the Military Medal in 1988 for service in Northern Ireland.. He also served as a bodyguard for three British prime ministers.. He was honourably discharged from the British Army on 8 February 1992 in the rank of staff sergeant.. After that, he worked as a security consultant in Iraq and Afghanistan, and was also an airsoft instructor..McAleese married twice. In 2009, his elder son, 29-year-old Sergeant Paul McAleese of 2 Battalion The Rifles, was killed on active duty in Afghanistan by a roadside bomb in Helmand Province.. John McAleese suffered a heart attack and died in Thessaloniki, Greece.. His funeral was held at Hereford Cathedral..He was survived by his second wife, a daughter by his first marriage, and two children by his second marriage.

Situated on the main street is Hawthorn Cottage, a nineteenth-century stone dwelling that was once owned by Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite and creator of the Nobel Prizes after his death.. Nobel lived there while managing an explosives factory near the nearby villages of Redding and Westquarter..The Antonine Wall is a stone and turf fortification built by the Romans across what is now the Central Belt of Scotland, between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde..The wall was protected by 16 forts with small fortlets between them; troop movement was facilitated by a road linking all the sites known as the Military Way..Founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, Thessaloniki's history spans some 2,300 years.. Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller..Whoever controls the media, controls the mind..Exactly! Caesar had his legions, Napoleon had his armies, I have my divisions.. TV, news, magazines..And by midnight I'll have reached and influenced more people than anyone in the history of this planet, save G Himself.. And the best He ever managed was the Sermon on the Mount..Great men have always manipulated the media to save the world... http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showp...&postcount=367

The McAleese of McLees family were members of a sept of the Clan MacPherson.. The name MacPherson means son of the parson and the name McAleese means son of the Sergeant..

In Scottish Gaelic the name Macpherson is Mac a' Phersein which means son of the parson..The Celtic church allowed priests to marry and the progenitor of the chiefs of Clan Macpherson is believed to have been a man named Muireach or Murdo Cattenach who was the priest of Kingussie in Badenoch.. The Clan Macpherson is part of the Chattan Confederation (Clan Chattan).. In 843 the chief of Clan Chattan was Gille Chattan Mor and one of his sons, the first chief of Clan Macpherson was forced to resettle in Lochaber by Kenneth MacAlpin, first king of Scots. The chief could have been the lay prior of Ardchattan and he seems to have been named in honor of Saint Cathan..In 1370 the Battle of Invernahavon took place between the Chattan Confederation and the Clan Cameron..The feud between the Clan Cameron and Chattan Confederation continued for many years after and in 1396 the Battle of the North Inch took place, which was watched by Robert III of Scotland and his whole court..Cluny Castle, about 5 miles south-west of Newtonmore in Strathspey was a stronghold of the clan..

The Rifles is an infantry regiment of the British Army.. Formed in 2007, it consists of 5 Regular and two Reserve battalions, plus a number of companies in other Army Reserve battalions. Each battalion of The Rifles was formerly an individual battalion of 1 of the 2 large regiments of the Light Division ..Sorry, I tuned out for a moment, Elliot..Mr. Wallace, call the President..The regular element of The Rifles maintains a single regular regimental band, the Band and Bugles of The Rifles..Yes, sir.. As requested, it's full of bugles, which means people will be forced to upgrade for years..As a rifle regiment, a private soldier in The Rifles is known as a Rifleman and Serjeant is spelt in the archaic fashion; the regiment wears a Rifle green beret..A number of golden threads have been brought into the new regiment from each of its founder regiments - The Maltese Cross of the Royal Green Jackets is worn as a buckle on the cross belt..I've practiced taking guns from these boys before; so we'll have no trouble there..In 1539, the Knight Templars of Malta, paid tribute to Charles V of Spain, by sending him a Golden Falcon encrusted from beak to claw with rarest jewels .. but pirates seized the galley carrying this priceless token and the fate of the Maltese Falcon remains a mystery to this day.

Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine..

Special Air Service Reserves (SAS (R)) comprising of 21 SAS and 23 SAS were formed in 1947 and 1959 respectively.. SAS(R) are tasked to the highest level and can operate in difficult and often changing circumstances, sometimes in absence of guidance and within situations that have significant operational and strategic importance..created from the former Reserve Reconnaissance Unit, itself descended from the body of the organisation known as Military Intelligence 9..The regiment's first commander was H. S. Gillies, at the time a Lietenant Colonel.. Anthony Hunter-Choat OBE was the commanding officer of the regiment from 1977 to 1983..Sebastian Morley, at that time a Major, was for a period commander of D squadron until his resignation sometime during 2008..The reservists were at some time involved directly in the training of a body of men who were the newly instituted national police of Afghanistan, during the most recent Afghan war...

Whiskey a Go Go..

A former SAS soldier found hanged at a goldmine he ran in Zimbabwe was murdered, his family told an inquest in Surrey yesterday..A coroner recorded an open verdict in the death of Robert “Rab” Wood, 54, but concluded that the circumstances surrounding the death, including claims that he was murdered and the business plundered, were “very suspicious”..Mr Wood’s family has offered a £16,000 reward for new information relating to the case...Robert Wood, 54, was found hanged at the home he shared with lover Henrietta Dube in the troubled African state last year..Authorities in Zimbabwe identified 4 murder suspects during an investigation into the ex-Corporal’s death but refused to co-operate with UK police, the inquest heard..

After leaving the SAS Mr Wood, known as Rab to his friends, had gone into business providing security for mining ventures in Sierra Leone before expanding into Zimbabwe..At the time of his death he was running a lucrative goldmine in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, for two British investors in return for a 13 per cent stake in the business..The former serviceman was discovered with a belt around his neck, hanging from security bars in the spare room of his new home on March 9, 2012, after a night of heavy drinking.. .He began an affair with mine director Miss Dube during one of his 6-week stays in the country and had started renting a house for them to share just two days before his death...

Miss Dube’s boyfriend Bhekithemba Nyoni then “stepped into Rab’s shoes” in running the mine, started driving his car and even posted pictures online posing next to the dead man’s whiskey collection, the inquest heard..A post-mortem in Zimbabwe gave the cause of death as asphyxia and a pathologist recorded it as suicide. A second examination in the UK confirmed the cause of death..But speaking at the inquest, Mr Wood’s brother Ian, who travelled to Zimbabwe to try and uncover the truth earlier this year, accused Miss Dube of forging his dead sibling’s will to try to cash in on Mr Wood’s assets after he died..He claimed Mr Nyoni had taken control of the mine and emptied the company's account.. He said: “He has more or less taken over Robert's role. He's still got the car Robert owned..Surrey detectives tried to investigate Mr Wood's death but their inquiries were thwarted by a lack of cooperation from the local police, the coroner was told...

Another brother, David Wood, said he met Robert for a coffee in London just a week before his death and that he had "looked troubled" and said "they are trying to get me out of the mine"..Mr Wood’s widow Susan, 59, told the inquest she had spoken to her husband the day before his death and he had been planning to return to the family home in Windlesham, Surrey, to celebrate his 55th birthday..The mother-of-two said she knew about his overseas affair but had reassured him it would not affect their family life..Mrs Wood, who had two sons aged 18 and 19 with her husband of 20 years, described him as an optimist who was "too full of life" to kill himself...

Mr Collins left the SAS to become a vicar in 1989. After being ordained he became chaplain of 23 SAS division in Hereford, and was later made padre of The Parachute Regiment..

“They emptied the company bank account on February 15, which was the same day the forged will was signed.”..“I've got pictures here of Rab's whiskey collection and him with them, and with handfuls of money.. I got the pictures from the internet”..In the 15th chapter of Raymond Chandler's The Lady in the Lake (1943), Philip Marlowe finds a couple of bottles of Vat 69 in Mr. Lavery's house...

Special Forces of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) are the units of the Zimbabwe National Army that operate as special forces. These forces have been deployed in several African conflicts, including the Mozambique Civil War and the Second Congo War..According to Jane's Special Forces Recognition Guide, Special Forces in the Zimbabwe National Army include..One Commando Regiment (formerly One Commando Battalion, previously the Rhodesian Light Infantry), based at Cranborne Barracks, Harare. The commando regiment is led by Lieutenant Colonel Hwami Vengesai.. Selection phase include 4-day navigating day and night in the Zambezi Valley while carrying a 30 kg weight on an empty stomach..One Parachute Regiment (sometimes referred to as Parachute Group) at Inkomo Barracks just North of Harare..Special Air Service - based at Kabrit Barracks, adjacent to Harare Airport, under the command of Colonel Panga Kufa.. The SAS has recently allowed women to be recruited into the unit...Zimbabwe Mounted Infantry or Grey's Scouts, a horse-mounted reconnaissance unit..The main unit used to be based at Guinea Fowl...Boat Squadron with 5 sub-units..There is also a diving school, equipped with a decompression chamber, operated in conjunction with the commandos...

Victoria Falls, the end of the upper Zambezi and beginning of the middle Zambezi..

Angola-Some sources claim Zimbabwean commandos led the final assault on UNITA leading to the eventual killing of Jonas Savimbi\Zimbabwe sent 2,000 troop to help the Angola government end the war/Mozambique-24 January 1986 in Operation Octopus, Paras and Commandos were dropped near Marromeu to secure the town and the sugar refinery.. 27 January 1986 several Para drops were made in support of the operation\Congo-Zimbabwean commandos defended Kinshasa at the last minute when it was on the brink of falling to rebels to invading Ugandan and Rwandan army units.. Due to the river networks in the DRC, the Boat Squadron saw extensive use during the course of Zimbabwe’s involvement-The Parachute Regiment suffered a heavy blow when 15 soldiers and together with their CASA 212 were captured after landing on an airstrip already controlled by the invading forces.. It is believed the DRC government army unit they were supposed to join had defected to the rebels.. It was the jets of 5 Sqn which played a crucial role together with helicopter squadrons of the AFZ who managed to neutralise the rebels by destroying their tanks and heavy artillery...

The territory of what is now Zambia was known as Northern Rhodesia from 1911.. It was renamed Zambia at independence in 1964.. The new name of Zambia was derived from the Zambezi river (Zambezi may mean "God's river")..The earliest European to visit the area was Portuguese explorer Francisco de Lacerda in the late 18th century..In 1888, the British South Africa Company (BSA Company), led by Cecil Rhodes, obtained mineral rights from the Litunga, the Paramount Chief of the Lozi (Ba-rotse) for the area which later became Barotziland-North-Western Rhodesia..Northern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zambia on 24 October 1964, with Kenneth Kaunda as the first president...Civil strife in both Portuguese colonies and a mounting Namibian War of Independence resulted in an influx of refugees and compounded transportation issues..The Zambian Defence Force (ZDF) consists of the army, the air force, and the Zambian National Service (ZNS).. The ZDF is designed primarily against external threats..Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (Second German Television), usually shortened to ZDF, is a German public-service TV broadcaster based in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate...

Arrow ACclimatization

Storm over Everest..
Quote:
In order to maintain performance across a range of environmental conditions, there are several strategies organisms use to acclimate. In response to changes in temperature, organisms can change the biochemistry of cell membranes making them more fluid in cold temperatures and less fluid in warm temperatures by increasing the number of membrane proteins.. Organisms may also express specific proteins called heat shock proteins that may act as molecular chaperons and help the cell maintain function under periods of extreme stress. It has been shown, that organisms which are acclimated to high or low temperatures display relatively high resting levels of heat shock proteins so that when they are exposed to even more extreme temperatures the proteins are readily available. Expression of heat shock proteins and regulation of membrane fluidity are just two of many biochemical methods organisms use to acclimate to novel environments. Note: acclimation and acclimatization are two very different terms that are not interchangeable. Acclimation is used under laboratory conditions, while acclimatization is "in the field" or in nature..Many plants, such as maple trees, irises, and tomatoes, can survive freezing temperatures if the temperature gradually drops lower and lower each night over a period of days or weeks..Animals acclimate in many ways. Sheep grow very thick wool in cold, damp climates...

Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of an organism to change its phenotype in response to changes in the environment..As compared with plants, animals clearly show less plasticity in gross morphology. Nonetheless, developmental effects of nutrition and temperature have been demonstrated..Other generalities include the following: behavior is very plastic; in vertebrates, skeletal muscle is more plastic than the lung; skeletal muscle is more plastic in mammals than in lizards; snake guts are very plastic; carp are very plastic as a species..The North American Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) has experienced an increase in average temperature over this last decade of almost 2 °C.. This increase in temperature has caused an increase in abundance of white spruce cones, the main food source for winter and spring reproduction. In response, the mean lifetime parturition date of this species has advanced by 18 days...

The human body can adapt to high altitude through both immediate and long-term acclimatization.. At high altitude, in the short term, the lack of oxygen is sensed by the carotid bodies, which causes an increase in the breathing rate (hyperventilation).. However, hyperventilation also causes the adverse effect of respiratory alkalosis, inhibiting the respiratory center from enhancing the respiratory rate as much as would be required.. Inability to increase the breathing rate can be caused by inadequate carotid body response or pulmonary or renal disease..Full acclimatization, however, requires days or even weeks..

The salt content of sweat and urine decreases as people acclimatize to hot conditions..Acclimatization to high altitude continues for months or even years after initial ascent, and ultimately enables humans to survive in an environment that, without acclimatization, would kill them.. Humans who migrate permanently to a higher altitude naturally acclimatize to their new environment by developing an increase in the number of red blood cells to increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood, in order to compensate for lower levels of oxygen in the air...

Mountain weather conditions can change dramatically from one hour to the next.. For example, in just a few minutes a thunder storm can roll in when the sky was perfectly clear, and in just a few hours the temperatures can drop from extremely hot temperatures to temperatures that are below freezing.. Weather can change suddenly so it is important to take the right survival equipment.. Nothing about a mountain is static. Even views change over time as forces act on mountains to shape and form them...
