On VE Day, 1st Airborne Division was ordered to Norway to accept the surrender of the 400,000 German soldiers there. After VJ Day 9th Airborne Squadron went to Palestine with the 6th Airborne Division.. The squadron had a difficult time in Palestine, being sent to clear the King David Hotel in Jerusalem after a horrific bomb attack. In Palestine the squadron lost 3 men killed in action..9 Independent Airborne Squadron RE accompanied the Division to Germany, returning to the UK in 1950, since when the squadron has served on active service in countries such as Egypt, Cyprus, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Aden, Radfan, Borneo, Rhodesia as well as 6 full tours and 2 spearhead tours of duty in Northern Ireland(6+2=8).....

King David Hotel after bomb attack..

In 1976, 16 Independent Parachute Brigade disbanded and 9 Independent Parachute Squadron RE lost its independence and became part of 36 Engineer Regiment, based at Maidstone.. 9 Parachute Squadron RE, as it was now called, was to remain in Aldershot to support the Parachute Battalions.. In April 1982, the squadron embarked for the Falkland Islands as part of 5 Infantry Brigade.. In true sapper tradition, the squadron was involved in the thick of the action from clearing minefields to repairing bridges.. Sergeant Ron Wrega, Sergeant Pete Colclough and Corporal John Foran won the Military Medal during the conflict...

The King David Hotel (Hebrew: מלון המלך דוד‎ Malon ha-Melekh David فندق الملك داود‎) is a 5-star hotel in Jerusalem.. Opened in 1931, the hotel was built with locally quarried pink limestone and was founded by Ezra Mosseri, a wealthy Egyptian Jewish banker.. It is located on King David Street in the centre of Jerusalem, overlooking the Old City and Mount Zion..From its earliest days, the King David Hotel hosted royalty: the dowager empress of Persia, queen mother Nazli of Egypt and King Abdullah I of Jordan stayed at the hotel, and three heads of state forced to flee their countries took up residence there: King Alfonso XIII of Spain, forced to abdicate in 1931, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, driven out by the Italians in 1936, and King George II of Greece who set up his government in exile at the hotel after the Nazi occupation of his country in 1942.. During the British Mandate, the southern wing of the hotel was turned into a British administrative and military headquarters..Today, the King David Hotel is part of the Dan Hotel Chain, and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and continues to accommodate foreign heads of state and diplomats visiting Israel. Amongst the hotel's more famous guests are King George V; Jordan’s King Hussein; U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama; British Prime Ministers Winston Churchill, Harold Wilson, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, and Tony Blair; the Prince of Wales; Elizabeth Taylor; Richard Dreyfus; Richard Gere; Madonna; and Hillary Rodham Clinton...

9 Field Company RE (Airborne) returned to the UK in November 1943 to prepare for D Day.. In September 1944 the company took part in Operation Market Garden..With the exception of 2 gliders that crash landed, the remainder of the unit landed safely at Arnhem, where they played an important role in the defence of the bridge.. The platoon was used as the counter-attack force by Lt Col John Frost, the Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, and fought with great bravery in the infantry role..However, they took heavy casualties, with just 57 of the original company of 215 men returning to the UK, the rest being captured or killed..

Frost was the son of Frank Dutton Frost CBE MC, a British Army officer, and his wife, Elsie Dora (née Bright). He was educated at Monkton Combe School in Somerset, John Frost joined the British Army on 1 September 1932, when on graduation from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).. From 1938 to 1941 Frost worked with the Iraq Levies as a captain. He joined the Parachute Regiment in 1941..Frost distinguished himself in Operation Biting, a raid to dismantle and steal the radar dish or components of the German Würzburg radar at Bruneval.. The raid was the second time the fledgling British parachute regiment was called on. C Company under the then Major Frost was given the task and on 27 February 1942 120 men landed, meeting stiff opposition but succeeded in stealing the component as well as capturing a German expert on the radar.. The operation lost 3 men killed and se7en badly wounded.. Prime Minister Winston Churchill applauded the raid and guaranteed further wartime operations for the paratroopers...

Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Jones VC OBE..

Operation Corporate (28–29 May 1982) was an engagement of the Falklands War between British and Argentina..On 28th May 1982 Lieutenant Colonel Jones was commanding 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment on operations on the Falkland Islands.. The Battalion was ordered to attack enemy mine positions in and around the settlements of Darwin and Goose Green..During the attack against an enemy who was well dug in with mutually supporting positions sited in depth, the Battalion was held up just South of Darwin by a particularly well-prepared and resilient enemy position of at least 11 trenches on an important ridge.. A number of casualties were received.. In order to read the battle fully and to ensure that the momentum of his attack was not lost, Colonel Jones took forward his reconnaissance party to the foot of a re-entrant which a section of his Battalion had just secured.. Despite persistent, heavy and accurate fire the reconnaissance party gained the top of the re-entrant, at approximately the same height as the enemy positions.. From here Colonel Jones encouraged the direction of his Battalion mortar fire, in an effort to neutralise the enemy positions.. However, these had been well prepared and continued to pour effective fire onto the Battalion advance, which, by now held up for over an hour and under increasingly heavy artillery fire, was in danger of faltering...

Goose Green & Sgt Major Barry Norman, Falklands War 1982..

In his effort to gain a good viewpoint, Colonel Jones was now at the very front of his Battalion.. It was clear to him that desperate measures were needed in order to overcome the enemy position and rekindle the attack, and that unless these measures were taken promptly the Battalion would sustain increasing casualties and the attack perhaps even fail.. It was time for personal leadership and action.. Colonel Jones immediately seized a sub-machine gun, and, calling on those around him and with total disregard for his own safety, charged the nearest enemy position.. This action exposed him to fire from a number of trenches.. As he charged up a short slope at the enemy position he was seen to fall and roll backward downhill.. He immediately picked himself up, and again charged the enemy trench, firing his sub-machine gun and seemingly oblivious to the intense fire directed at him.. He was hit by fire from another trench which he outflanked, and fell dying only a few feet from the enemy he had assaulted.. A short time later a company of the Battalion attacked the enemy, who quickly surrendered.. The display of courage by Colonel Jones had completely undermined their will to fight further...The achievements of 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment at Darwin and Goose Green set the tone for the subsequent land victory on the Falklands.. The British achieved such a moral superiority over the enemy in this first battle that, despite the advantages of numbers and selection of battle-ground, the Argentinian troops never thereafter doubted neither the superior fighting qualities of the British troops, nor their own inevitable defeat..You mean to say we lost 11 men fighting a group of waxworks?..

This was an action of the utmost gallantry by a Commanding Officer whose dashing leadership and courage throughout the battle were an inspiration to all about him... He was awarded the VC for his actions as commanding officer of 2 Battalion, Parachute Regiment during the Falklands War after being killed in action during the Battle of Goose Green ( "Pradera del Ganso", "Ganso Verde") is a settlement in Lafonia on East Falkland in the Falkland Islands. It lies on Choiseul Sound, on the east side of the island's central isthmus, 2 miles (3.2 km) south-southwest of Darwin. .With a population of about 70, it is the second largest settlement of the Falkland Islands..Goose Green has a shop and a small airfield. Local attractions include the nearby Bodie Suspension Bridge and the Vicar of Bray shipwreck, which participated in the California gold rush..Goose Green farm itself is massive. At 1,700 square kilometres (430,000 acres), it is double the size of the farms as Port Howard or North Arm.. After stopping to reload his submachine gun halfway up the hill, he pushed on, only to be shot in the back by an Argentine gunner, Jose Louis Rios, manning a MAG at the right of the Argentine line, on the opposite spur to the trench Jones was charging Corporal Rios was later fatally wounded in his trench by Corporal Abols firing a 66mm rocket.. Jones had been hit in the back and the groin, and despite the efforts of those around him, was dead within the hour.. Also killed during this action was the adjutant, Captain Wood..Command of 2 PARA passed to Major Chris Keeble (Born 14 November 1941 Quetta, British India),and Jones (Born 14 May 1940 )-(2x14=28) was buried at Ajax Bay on 30 May near where he died of wounds (28 May 1982 (aged 42).. After the war his body was exhumed and buried at the Blue Beach War Cemetery in Port San Carlos on 25 October..On 16 November 1982 64 of the dead, (52 soldiers, 11 Royal Marines, and one laundryman from Hong Kong) were returned to Britain aboard the landing ship Sir Bedivere...

Sabaton back in control Sgt Ian Mckay VC..

It was almost noon before the British advance resumed.. Inspired by their commanding officer's sacrifice, A Company soon cleared the eastern end of the Argentine position and opened the way forward. There had been two battles going on in the Darwin hillocks - one around Darwin Hill looking down on Darwin Bay, and an equally fierce one in front of Boca Hill, also known as Boca House Ruins.. Corporal David Abols received a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his daring charges which turned the Darwin Hill battle..Goose Green was occupied by Argentine forces during the Falklands War..Over one hundred islanders were imprisoned in the community hall, while over 1,200 Argentine troops occupied the settlement and nearby Darwin..It was the subject of the first land battle of that conflict, as it was relatively close to the site of the British landings, San Carlos, and the British leaders were looking for an early victory, even if the site was not necessarily of military importance..The area is still heavily mined..Sometime in 1986 I met a young man I knew, who was at that time a serving soldier in the Parachute Regiment.. He told me that Colonel Jones had been shot by his own Sergeant Major because he had been acting in a way that was endangering his men at the battle of Goose Green..In the United States military parlance, fragging is the murder of members of the military, particularly commanders of a fighting unit or manipulating the chain of command in order to have an individual or unit deliberately killed by placing the personnel in harm's way..An example would be to order a soldier to perform a particularly hazardous task and continue to repeat the task until the soldier met his darth..The families of 16 of the dead kept with tradition and preferred their sons' remains should stay in the islands..14 are buried at Port San Carlos with 2 more at isolated single grave sites at Goose Green and Port Howard...

Arrow Clan Mackay

Sergeant McKay of 4 Platoon, B Company, 3rd Battalion..
Quote:
During the night of 11th/12th June 1982, 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment mounted a silent night attack on an enemy battalion position on Mount Longdon, an important objective in the battle for Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.. Sergeant McKay was platoon sergeant of 4 Platoon, B Company, which, after the initial objective had been secured, was ordered to clear the Northern side of the long East/West ridge feature, held by the enemy in depth, with strong, mutually-supporting positions.. By now the enemy were fully alert, and resisting fiercely.. As 4 Platoon's advance continued it came under increasingly heavy fire from a number of well-sited enemy machine gun positions on the ridge, and received casualties.. Realising that no further advance was possible the Platoon Commander ordered the Platoon to move from its exposed position to seek shelter among the rocks of the ridge itself.. Here it met up with part of 5 Platoon...

Clan Mackay (Gaelic: Mac Aoidh) is an ancient and once-powerful Scottish clan from the far North of the Scottish Highlands, but with roots in the old kingdom of Moray.. They supported Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. In the centuries that followed they were anti-Jacobite.. The territory of the Clan Mackay consisted of the parishes of Farr, Tongue, Durness and Eddrachillis, and was known as Strathnaver, in the north-west of the county of Sutherland..According to Major General Stewart the Mackays were amongst the clans who supported Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.. Later in the 14th century, in 1371 two Mackay chieftains were murdered, father and son, at Dingwall Castle by Nicholas Sutherland of Duffus, head of one of the junior branches of Clan Sutherland..Much bloodshed followed, including a retaliatory raid on Dornoch in 1372.. The cathedral was once again set on fire and many Sutherland men were hanged in the town square.. After this, the feud quietened down as both sides were called away to fight against the English..In 1411 Donald of Islay, Lord of the Isles challenged the Stewart royal family for the Earldom of Ross. Chief Angus Du Mackay, 7th of Strathnaver joined the Stewart Confederacy and the Battle of Dingwall took place in which Donald of the Isles defeated Mackay. However Angus Du Mackay later married a sister of Donald of the Isles, and granddaughter of Robert II of Scotland, indicating how important the Clan Mackay had become..It is Clan Cameron tradition that in 1505 the Battle of Achnashellach took place, where the Camerons defeated a joint force from the Clan Mackay and Clan Munro, whose chief, William Munro of Foulis was killed.. In 1513 chief Iye Roy Mackay (d.1517) along with his brother, John Riavach Mackay, led the Mackays at the Battle of Flodden, where John Riavach was killed along with many of his clansmen...

Lightbulb Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

Shetland pony and miner in Virginia..

Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Aden 1967 700 Glengarried men..
Quote:
The Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, prior to the regiment's formation, adopted the Shetland as its regimental mascot and names them Cruachan..Shetland ponies have heavy coats, short legs and are considered quite intelligent.. They are a very strong breed of pony, used for riding, driving, and pack purposes..The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's) was an infantry regiment of the British Army until amalgamation into The Royal Regiment of Scotland in 2006..The regiment was created in 1881 as an amalgamation of the 91st and 93rd Regiments of Foot.. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was expanded to 15 battalions during the First World War and 9 during the Second World War.. The regiment sent an active battalion to serve in the Commonwealth Division in Korea and gained a high public profile for its role in Aden during 1967..It also had the largest cap badge in the British Army..The uniform included the Glengarry as its ceremonial headress...

It was formed in 1881 by the amalgamation of the 91st (Princess Louise's Argyllshire) Regiment and the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment as outlined in the Childers Reforms..The 1st Battalion arrived in the Cape in November 1899 and formed part of the 3rd or Highland Brigade. The Argylls played leading roles in the Battle of Modder River, the Battle of Magersfontein, the Battle of Paardeberg and in an action at Roodepoort, immediately preceding the Battle of Doornkop..When the Great War broke out in 1914 the regiment had two Regular Battalions (1st and 2nd), two Militia Battalions (3rd and 4th) and 5 Territorial Battalions (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th each of which split into 1st, 2nd and 3rd-line battalions).. Se7en more Service Battalions were raised for Kitchener's Army and they were numbered 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th..There were 9 Argyll and Sutherland battalions raised during the Second World War..The 2nd Battalion fought valiantly against the Imperial Japanese Army during the fighting in Malaya and Singapore.. Led by the tough Lieutenant Colonel Ian Stewart they were one of the very few British units that was prepared for the jungle warfare in Malaya..

The 2nd Battalion, led by their piper, advance during Operation Epsom (salts) in Normandy in June, 1944..

Having suffered the massive loss of some 800 men due to being continuously used as the buffer to protect the retreating army (especially at the Battle of Slim River), the remaining Argylls, upon arriving in Singapore were reinforced with Royal Marines who had survived the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse in December 1941 changing their name to Plymouth Argylls..A few Argylls managed to escape to India, including Lt.Col.Stewart, where they lectured on Jungle warfare tactics..In May 1942 the 15th Battalion, raised during the war, was redesignated as the new 2nd Battalion..In March 1942, two British privates of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Macfarlane and Goldie, escaped from Stalag IX-C at Bad Sulza in Thuringia..Throughout their escape bid, both men wore 40 lb rucksacks that concealed the markings and which they never took off in public..After enduring a week in a salt wagon bound for Belgium, the two men made contact with an escape line there and, by mid-summer, they were safely back in Scotland..On 25 April 1943 the 8th Battalion was, by this time, serving with the 36th Brigade, part of the 78th Battleaxe Division during the Tunisian Campaign won fame during the assault of Djebel Ahmera hill on the attack on Longstop Hill, in which despite heavy casualties from mortar and machine gun fire scaled and took the heights..In 1948, the 2nd Battalion was amalgamated with the 1st Battalion which then saw service in Palestine, Korea, British Guiana, Berlin, Suez, Singapore, Borneo, Hong Kong, Aden and the Falklands.. The Argylls were noted during the Aden Emergency for their reoccupation of the Crater district of Aden, under controversial Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Campbell Mitchell..The late 20th and early 21st centuries were dominated by service in Northern Ireland, with small detachments also serving in the Balkans..The Regiment served in Iraq in 2004...

Arrow Sacred Band

Hellenic Army Seal..

Emblem of the 1st Raider/Paratrooper Brigade..
Quote:
The nucleus of the Raider units was the Sacred Company (Ieros Lochos), a Free Greek unit of commandos attached to the Allied 1st Special Air Service (1 SAS) Brigade during the Second World War.. Its members consisted of mainly officers and NCOs who had fled to North Africa after the fall of Greece to Axis forces.. After its formation in 1942, the Sacred Company, also known as the Sacred Band, along with a unit of Free French troops and British commandos, formed the basis of L Detachment, a component of the SAS which specialised in hit-and-run raids on Axis airfields, ports and fuel dumps throughout North Africa..The Sacred Company was later transferred to the Greek theatre of operations, where they recaptured several eastern Aegean islands from Axis forces.. After the liberation of Greece from German occupation, a proposal was made for the reformation of the Hellenic Armed Forces under British guidance.. This proposal included the establishment of a small, highly trained, special warfare unit..All members of the Brigade wear the unit insignia depicting a winged sword, representative of the "deadly, silent and swift" nature of special forces operations..Motto Ο Tολμών Nικά..The unit flash is emblazoned with ΔΥΝΑΜΕΙΣ ΚΑΤΑΔΡΟΜΩΝ (Raider Forces).. While on operation, low-visibility patches are worn..All Raiders wear the green beret with the national emblem on the left...

Hellenic SF - Darth From Above..

The agency's motto is "λόγων απορρήτων εκφοράν μη ποιού" (translated roughly as "do not discuss confidential affairs"), a quote of the Ancient Greek philosopher Periandros.. The total number of people working for the agency is unknown and remains classified; the Greek media usually give figures of around 3,000..After the fall of the Papadopoulos regime, and the establishment of a democratic republic in 1975, the LOK were dismantled and re-formed as the Raider Forces (Greek: Δυνάμεις Kαταδρομών), and placed under the command of the Hellenic Army's Special Forces Command (Greek: Διοίκηση Ειδικών Δυνάμεων)..A further restructuring of the Greek Army in 1996 saw the amalgamation of all Raider Forces regiments into the current Brigade formation..1st Raider/Paratrooper Brigade soldiers wear the standard-issue Greek Lizard camouflage BDUs of the Hellenic Army.. Members of the Special Paratrooper Unit (ETA) and Z' MAK may occasionally wear non-standard issue BDUs, depending on mission requirements..They also have powerful sense impressions and feelings, and appear sometimes to share thoughts in a near-telepathic way.. As the novel progresses it becomes more and more apparent that they live very simply, using their considerable mental abilities to connect to one another without extensive vocabulary or the kinds of memories that create culture..Those who plot the destruction of others often perish in the attempt...

The regiment is formed of three regular and one reserve [TA] battalions. One battalion, the 1st Battalion, is permanently attached to Director Special Forces in the Special Forces Support Group

1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA)
2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA)

3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (3 PARA)
4th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (4 PARA)

The 3rd Battalion includes the Guards Parachute Platoon, made up of men from the five Foot Guards regiments.

The Parachute Regiment has its origins in the force set up by the British Army at the request of Winston Churchill. The UK was inspired in the creation of airborne forces (including the Parachute Regiment, Air Landing Regiments, and the Glider Pilot Regiment) by the example of the German Luftwaffe's Fallschirmjäger, which had a major role in the invasions of Norway, and the Low Countries, and a pivotal, if Pyrrhic, one in the invasion of Crete.

The UK's first airborne assault took place on 10 February 1941, when, what was then known as II Special Air Service (some 40 men of 500 trained in parachuting), introduced themselves to the enemy by jumping into Italy and blowing up an aqueduct in a daring raid named Operation Colossus.
After the German's successful invasion of Crete, it was agreed by the British Chiefs of Staff that the UK would need far more paratroopers for similar operations. No. 2 Commando were tasked with specialising in airborne assault and became the nucleus of the Parachute Regiment.

Para Lance Corporal Joshua Leakey’s astonishing bravery under enemy fire has earned him a Victoria Cross but the modest hero says he was only scared of letting down his regiment.

His honour, which has been announced by the Army today, completes an
extraordinary family double because one of his relatives got a VC for gallantry during the Second World War.

L Cpl Leakey, 27, has won the armed forces’ highest award for bravery thanks to his exploits in an assault on a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan in 2013.

Chiefs said he showed “complete disregard” for his safety as British forces were attacked by 20 insurgents armed with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

A true hero - not a keyboard warrior...

Riding the flying horse Pegasus..
Quote:
Bellerophon ( Βελλεροφῶν) or Bellerophontes (Βελλεροφόντης) is a hero of Greek mythology.. He was "the greatest hero and slayer of monsters, alongside Cadmus and Perseus, before the days of Heracles", whose greatest feat was killing the Chimera, a monster that Homer depicted with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail: "her breath came out in terrible blasts of burning flame".. He was the son of the mortal Eurynome by either her husband Glaucus, or Poseidon...As Bellerophon's fame grew, so did his hubris.. Bellerophon felt that because of his victory over the Chimera, and because he thought he was a god he deserved to fly to Mount Olympus, the realm of the gods.. However, this presumption angered Zeus and he sent a gadfly to sting the horse causing Bellerophon to fall all the way back to Earth.. Pegasus completed the flight to Olympus where Zeus used him as a pack horse for his thunderbolts..Operation Pegasus (1968), the First Air Cavalry Division's relief of the besieged Marine Corps garrison at Khe Sanh during the Vietnam War...

Battle of Khe Sanh" Department of Defense..

Enough fragments of Euripides' lost tragedy Bellerophontes remain embedded as some thirty quotations in surviving texts to give scholars a basis for assessing its theme: the tragic outcome of his attempt to storm Olympus on Pegasus..The first planet discovered orbiting a Sun-like star, 51 Pegasi b, has been unofficially nicknamed 'Bellerophon'..It is the prototype for a class of planets called hot Jupiters..Bellerophon is a computer program used by geneticists and molecular biologists to detect invalid "chimera" genetic sequences..Bellerophon was also the name of four or more Royal Navy warships, the first of which fought many naval battles against Napoleon..The USS Bellerophon (ARL-31) was one of 41 Achelous-class landing craft repair ships built for the United States Navy during World War II..Bellerophon Taming Pegasus is an outdoor sculpture depicting Bellerophon and Pegasus by Jacques Lipchitz, located on the Columbia University campus in Manhattan, New York.. Installed above the west entrance of Jerome Greene Hall on Revson Plaza, the 23-ton sculpture measures approximately 30 feet (9.1 m) by 28 feet (8.5 m), making it one of the largest in the city. It was commissioned in 1966 and was dedicated on November 28, 1977...

MARCH No 4 ..
Quote:
The first four marches were all written before the events of World War I shattered that belief, and the styles in which wars were written about spurned the false romance of the battle-song..March No. 1 opens with an introduction marked Allegro, con molto fuoco..The bass tuba and full brass is held back until the section is repeated by the full orchestra..So what you have here is some kind of clock?.

Bloody Friday Documentary...

The target of the Official IRA bomb was the HQ of the 16th Parachute Brigade, elements of which had been involved in the Bloody Sunday shootings. Despite warnings, the 'open' garrison meant there was no security or controlled access to the camp..A Ford Cortina car containing a 280 pounds (130 kg) time bomb was left in the car park, deliberately positioned outside the officer's mess.. The bomb exploded at 12:40 pm on 22 February, destroying the officer's mess and wrecking several nearby Army office buildings..The soldiers who were the intended targets were not present, as the regiment itself was stationed abroad and most staff officers were in their offices rather than the mess. Nonetheless, se7en civilian staff were killed who were leaving the premises..On 23 February, the Official IRA issued a statement claiming that it had carried out the attack in revenge for Bloody Sunday.. It added: "Any civilian casualties would be very much regretted as our target was the officers responsible for the Derry outrages"..The Official IRA also said that the bombing would be the first of many such attacks on the headquarters of British Army regiments serving in Northern Ireland..

Confrontation between a British paratrooper and a local resident..
Quote:
On 12 May 1992, a unit of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) East Tyrone Brigade launched a bomb attack on a British Army patrol near the republican stronghold of Cappagh, County Tyrone.. One soldier of the Parachute Regiment, Alistair Hogdson, lost both legs as a result.. The landmine was described in an IRA statement as an "anti-personnel device".. The incident triggered a rampage by members of the Parachute Regiment in the nearby, overwhelmingly Irish nationalist town of Coalisland, some 10 miles to the east..These previous incidents included the destruction of fishing boats and equipments in the townland of Kinturk, near Ardboe.. Unionist politician and Ulster Defence Regiment officer Ken Maginnis, then-Member of Parliament for the area, called for the withdrawal of the regiment after receiving a large number of complaints about their behaviour..Following this, a LT was suspended from duty and the regiment was removed from patrol duties in Coal is land...

"Hunger" Bobby Sands - Priest Dialogue..

On the evening of 17 May, a fist-fight began at Lineside Road, where a group of young men were having a drink.. A passing 4-man patrol of the King's Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB) regiment was challenged to a 'boxing match' by the residents..The soldiers set aside their weapons and engaged the youths.. Injuries were reported on both sides, none critical.. The last patrol took place on 27 June, when two paratroopers drowned while crossing the River Blackwater.. The same day, there were further clashes with local residents, this time in the town of Cookstown...

The Parachute Regiment was called to the scene again, and at 8:30 PM, a major riot started outside The Rossmore pub between local people and about 20 to 25 paratroopers..3 civilians were rushed to hospital in Dungannon with gunshot wounds, while the soldiers returned to their barracks..One of the wounded was the brother of IRA volunteer Kevin O'Donnell, who had been killed by the Special Air Service in February during an ambush at the nearby hamlet of Clonoe, shortly after carrying out a machine-gun attack on the local RUC base...

"Our own officers were our greatest enemies", says Ernesto Alonso of Baldini's platoon who later became the president of CECIM, a veterans group founded by Rodolfo Carrizo and former conscripts of the 7th Regiment. "They supplied themselves with whiskey from the pubs, but they weren’t prepared for war.. They disappeared when things got serious." Alonso also claims the conscripts on Mount Longdon fought “without any type of leadership by our commanders, the officers and NCOs."..
