"Walden, or Life in the Woods" Henry David Thoreau (1817-61) . Non fiction, 200 pages, written in 1854 when Thoreau built his own log cabin and lived out in the wild forests of Walden Pond near Massachusetts as a self sufficient hermit for two years. A real-life survivalist's manual this, laden with living-in-the-wild top tips. Bread baking, game hunting, cabin building and ruminations on nature, humanity, society, skinny dipping, reading, wisdom, Indian and Greek classic literature. This book was to influence Martin Luther King, Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi in presenting man's alternative to the rat race in thought, word and deed, written by a genuine social misanthrope ( most famous for his "Civil Disobedience & Other Essays") who walked the talk in his lifestyle choices. Lyrical, pastoral prose narrative for nature lovers.

A must for any cyber detox camp. (Thoreau detested railways, the Post Office & printed news media).

Spending many years working in a pencil factory he is also the man who discovered that adding clay to graphite in pencils made them last longer.

Demons, he said, “fear the fasting, the
sleeplessness, the prayers, the meekness, the quietness,
the contempt of money and vainglory, the humility, the
love of the poor, the alms, the freedom from anger of the
ascetics, and, chief of all, their piety towards Christ.”

p.s. i found the second book by reading the first xD

Bought this book directly from the author following his electro-magnetic presentation at this year's Bradford Literature Festival, "Time & The Rose Garden" by Anthony Peake (non fiction) a brand new book about the work of J.B. Priestley written by an author who specialises in dimensionalism, deja vu, precognition, time distortions and synchronicity, all themes which are repeatedly explored in JB Priestley's work as early as the 1930s. This invigorating book is a long awaited addition to the many books written about JBP, one which truly acknowledges Priestley's serious concern with concepts of time and mankind's misconception of it which draws on Jung, JW Dunne, and Priestley's own beliefs of altered states of Self and Ego throughout his own life, in particular the Bardo principle.

Two highly exciting aspects of this book are discussion of the forthcoming new JB Priestley Play "Time Was, Time Is" only recently released from the Priestley Estate , purportedly his best time play ever, poses some disturbing questions about the nature of time itself, concerning, as it does, a time slip experience of an individual between 1914 - 1908 - 1974, centred around the chance meeting of a man and a woman at a party, who appear to one another in altered time states. The original source of this play was Priestley's earlier 1953 short story "Look After the Strange Girl" from his collection of paranormal tales entitled "The Other Place".

Secondly, the final chapters include analysis of several letters of paranormal encounters from the general public which Priestley requested in a BBC interview with Huw Wheldon on 17th March 1963. Following the request Priestley made, he received over 2,000 letters which were long held in the vaults of Cambridge University after his death in 1984, but which are now being transferred to the British Institute of Parapsychology for analysis (this programme was repeated in Australia and the letters continued to flood in from there too).

Often mislabelled as a writer of jolly Edwardian nostalgia "Good Companions" etc. or wartime optimism "Let the People Sing" Priestley's later career took him into dark areas still unexplored by the 'angry young men' playwrights of the 60's and 70's which so readily overtook him. Author Anthony Peake in his delivery at Bradford Literature Festival could not over emphasise the increasingly avant garde relevance of Priestley's later work to present day readers and audiences which explore quantum consciousness, dimensionalism, serialism, synchronicity, duality, hypnopompic, hypnogogic and dream states which were to preoccupy Priestley throughout his life and later work, long before the terms were ever fashionable. One particular acronym attributed directly to Priestley is FIP. Yep. FIP. That means: Future Influencing Past.

In other words it's not as simple as past catching up with/ shaping the present, we all know that. But it works from the other direction as well. The future may well have already happened, still is happening recurrently, alongside a continually recurring past and continually recurring present.

A sequel to this book is promised to further scrutinise the deluge of the 1963 letters, most have which have never before been seen by the general public.

Tony Peake's other work is well worth looking into as well, having written several books and made many video presentations about cosmic consciousness. His website is below:

Reading a book from James A. Michener, Caribean.... He would always travel to places, all over the world, learn everything he could abou the place, study a lot more back home and then write his books. I loved The Covenant about South Africa from him....

So far I've learned that the ultimate beauty in women for the Mayas were women who were extremely cross-eyed Parents would bind a small rope on a baby's head and hang a feather from it, right between the eyes to make 'em cross-eyed... They would also bind their heads with a wooden plank to make their for heads slant, another thing of great beauty to them....

I already knew about the sloping foreheads, there were some tribes in North America who did that also

Just read that there's a new book coming out from British science fiction writer Richard K. Morgan, YEAH!!!

One writer I can REALLY recommend is Chinese science fiction writer Cixin Liu, he won the Hugo Award for his amazing 2015 novel The Three Body Problem, really amazing stuff.....

But yeah beautiful fully cross-eyed women.....

The movie is famous; the book is better.
I haven’t been able to find a freely viewable (without registering) version...

Putting this up by way of a freebie and its also my own personal nominated desert island book of choice (sorry David).

Re-reading "An Experiment with Time" (non fiction) by Irish aeronautics engineer and ex Boer war officer JW Dunne was a ground breaking event upon its publication in 1922 and one which to influence all the Time plays of JB Priestley.

Keeping dream journals along with his friends and family, Dunne set out to prove with some success that the future has already happened as we approach it as a car drives down a road. As essentially a nuts and bolts man, writing esoteric books was merely a second string to his bow but one which was to attract the attentions not only of Priestley but of Jung and Einstein as Dunne begins to explore the world of quantum consciousness
long before the term was invented, the mysterious terrain of dreamscapes chartered by an engineer in plain layman's terms.
