Question Why Is NATO Selling Arms to Dictatorship's

On December 29, the White House announced that it was sending nearly $30 billion worth of F-15 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, part of a $60 billion package—the largest arms deal in history. President Obama has come a long way since his 2008 declaration that “nothing is more important than us no longer borrowing $700 billion or more from China and sending it to Saudi Arabia.” Apparently it was the borrowing part that really irked him—not the arming of a gender-apartheid, theocratic dictatorship.

The justification for the arms sale is simple. The deal will provide at least 50,000 jobs to Americans—good PR at a time of great economic distress. More importantly, it is intended to counter the very real threat of Iran, a regional menace that has brutally repressed its own people and sponsored terrorism worldwide. But arming one theocratic dictator to stop another is not only bad policy, it is profoundly immoral.

White House announces arms sale to Saudi Arabia...

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The White House announced on Thursday a major arms sale deal to Saudi Arabia worth around 29.4 billion dollars.

"The United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed a government-to-government agreement under the Foreign Military Sales program to provide advanced F-15SA combat aircraft to the Royal Saudi Air Force," White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Joshua Earnest said in a statement.

The agreement includes production of 84 new aircraft and the modernization of 70 existing aircraft, as well as munitions, spare parts, training, maintenance and logistics, according to the statement.

"This agreement reinforces the strong and enduring relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia, and demonstrates the U. S. commitment to a strong Saudi defense capability as a key component to regional security," it said.

The deal was part of an arms sale package the Obama administration announced more than a year ago. In October 2010, the White House said it planned to sell 60 billion dollars of military equipment to Saudi Arabia over 15 to 20 years, which would be the single largest military sale in U.S. history.
