He may have had a flying buddy!
Glenn Algar – Potters Bar
Detective jailed for sex grooming

A highly-decorated Flying Squad detective has been jailed for 18 months for trying to groom a schoolgirl for sex over the internet.

Det Con Glenn Algar, 45, from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, thought he was sending e-mails to the girl.

But he was sending the lurid messages to a colleague working under cover.

Algar had also admitted possessing child pornography. The Southwark Crown Court judge ordered him to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Algar is now banned him from working with children for life.

The married father-of-two resigned before appearing in court on Thursday.

He had pleaded guilty to internet grooming offences and six counts of making and possessing indecent images, at a hearing in January.

Algar had been based in Finchley, north London.

“This is a highly decorated police officer who, after 26 years of service to the public, had found himself repeatedly commended by his senior officers,” prosecutor Peter Zinner told the court on Thursday.

Judge Christopher Hardy told Algar the images found in his possession justified a prison term.

A TOP cop groomed a girl of 12 for sex while working undercover to catch paedophiles in the police.

Flying Squad Detective Constable Glen Algar, 44, also downloaded and made 168 porn pictures of children.

He spent five months grooming a schoolgirl called Lucy in an internet chatroom and sent her indecent films and text messages.

But it was a trap set by suspicious colleagues and she was actually another police officer.

Algar, married with two children, yesterday admitted 17 charges of online abuse including inciting a child to have sex. He had 25 years police service including rooting out bent officers.

He had been hand-picked for a top secret squad to uncover suspected paedophiles in the police, Southwark crown court in South London heard.

A former colleague said: "It is a sad case of a good cop turned bad. We don't know if his work trying to unmask paedophiles in the police turned his mind, or whether he had those secret tendencies going back years.

"On the surface he gave all the appearances of a happy family man with healthy interests."

Algar, of Potters Bar, Herts, who has been in custody for his own safety since November, will be sentenced in March.
