The OP has the same position, how come you didn't ask him about it?

My logic is that the upper order are of the skill to have at least one of them to stick around quite a while. Richards lower batting order stats are not as good as number 3 (you put him at 4), but in my judgement that is mainly down to the situations where he is expected to carry the batting. Having a top order batsman around gives him the playmaker role he excels at.

It also gives him a chance to bat alongside Botham and the fireworks these two would create could be stunning. With Gilchrist in the wings and Warne no slouch, the middle order could cause mayhem.
