If you mean the darker areas, they are flat marias. The far side has more visible craters when you view it close up.

The Earth would not actually be in the way at all, but it would very slightly limit the incoming meteorites hitting the near side by virtue of its stronger gravity. The explanation for the difference in visible craters, is due to the crust size......
