The aircraft involved was an ATR 72-600, registration RDPL-34233, serial number 1071, with an accumulated 758 hours of flight..Captain Yong Som (57), he had logged in 5.600 flying hours, in which 3.200 hours were on the ATR-72..The flight departed from Vientiane at 14:45 local time (07:45 UTC) and crashed into the Mekong River in Pakse at 15:55 local time..Lao People's Army barracks and HQ for Military Region 4 are next to the airport..There were 5 crew and 44 passengers on board, all of whom are presumed to have died upon impact..First Officer Soulisack Houvanthong (22), he had logged in around 400 hours of flying experience..Marks on the ground indicated that the aircraft landed heavily on the ground before entering the Mekong..From the Tibetan Plateau the river runs through China's Yunnan Province, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam..Recovery of the victims and wreckage was hampered by the fast-flowing, deep waters of the Mekong..Some of the victims were found 19 kilometres (12 mi) downstream of the crash site...Travellers can use tuk-tuk taxis and motorcycle taxis to get to and from the airport to Pakse via National Road 13..Lao Airlines Fleet size 11..The victims were of 11 nationalities..Of the 44 passengers on board..

On 6 February 1996, the Boeing 757–225 operating the route crashed shortly after take-off from Puerto Plata's Gregorio Luperón International Airport..There were no survivors..The cause was a pitot tube that investigators believe was blocked by a wasp nest that was built inside it...
